Lyrics
For three days I fought my way along roads packed with refugees, the homeless, burdened with boxes and bundles containing their valuables. All that was of value to me was in London. By the time I reached their little red brick house, Carrie and her father were gone...
The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you're not here
I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear
I wish that I was flying with them
Now you're not here
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
Cause you're not here
Cause you're not here
Cause you're not here
Fire suddenly leapt from house to house, the population panicked and ran and I was swept along with them, aimless and lost without Carrie. Finally I headed eastward for the ocean, and my only hope of survival: A boat out of England...
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My life will be forever autumn
Cause you're not here
Cause you're not here
Cause you're not here
As I hastened through Covent Garden, Blackfriars and Billingsgate, more and more people joined the painful exodus. Sad, weary women, their children stumbling and streaked with tears, their men bitter and angry, the rich rubbing shoulder with beggars and outcasts. Dogs snarled and whined, the horses' bits were covered with foam…... and here and there were wounded soldiers, as helpless as the rest. We saw tripods wading up the Thames, cutting through bridges as though they were paper - Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge…... One appeared above Big Ben
Ulla!
Never before in the history of the world had such a mass of human beings moved and suffered together. This was no disciplined march, it was a stampede, without order and without a goal, six million people, unarmed and unprovisioned, driving headlong. It was the beginning of the rout of civilization, of the massacre of mankind...
A vast crowd buffeted me toward the already packed steamer. I looked up enviously at those safely on board - straight into the eyes of my beloved Carrie! At sight of me she began to fight her way along the packed deck to the gangplank. At that very moment it was raised, and I caught a last glimpse of her despairing face as the crowd swept me away from her...
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
Cause you're not here
Cause you're not here
Cause you're not here
My husband introduced me to this album, I absolutely love it. Unfortunately he passed away in 2020 from cancer aged 47. I had this song played at his funeral. Life will be forever Autumn without you Lee 💔
So sorry for your loss. Hugs💜💜💜
Sorry for your Loss , Joy . Perfect Eulogy Song .
it would be "precious to hear at any funeral"....
Such a beautiful song for a funeral, farewell. Or more precisely.....a beautiful song for ' until we meet again'.😇🙏💯❤️🥂
I am so sorry for your loss, especially as he was so young. I am a 51 year old UK male and I was lucky enough to experience this album when it came out in the laye 70's as a kid. I know it so well, most of the words too. My dad had a high end hifi and headphone setup back then, so I had an amazing experience which stays with me today.
listened to this in 1978 when i was 18.i am 60 now still listening to it
still listening at 58 and still closing my eyes and loving it ..peace to all
Same here.
Damn, I’m 15. Glad to hear that people who listened to it back when it came out still listen to it.
I am 59, heard it with 17, also still listening to it, great music
Caro
Reading comments from people who have lost loved ones and listening to this is tough, my heart goes out to each and everyone of you
Jeff Wayne and Justin Hayward ex Moody Blues both brilliant at atmosphere! "Nights in White Satin, Never Reaching the End, Music I Have Written, Never Meaning to Send". Scared to Declare Love. Forever Autumn, Love Declared BUT Never Lost. IF you carry the LOVE Had & Refuse to Lose and the Love You Never Declared But Keep, You have Lost BUT Not Lost. The MEMORY IS CHERISHED FOREVER.
Never has there been such a perfect selection of voices to both sing and to narrate. No one could have ever done this better than Hayward and Burton.
too true my friend jeff wayne is the bollocks xxxx
Absolutely
*Hayward
Almost as though someone was watching ;)
@@eleanorrolph476 i lost my daughter and son yr half apart ive laid them together with the words on the headstone my life will be forever autumn cos your not here yes its the bollocks x
There will never be another Richard Burton.
He was a fantastic narrator.
My only wish is that he lived for longer than he did: and continued to narrate both prose and poetry. I don't know what it is about the Welsh...
Richard Burton treated us travelling football fans to an endless night of food and drink one night in Budapest. Never forgot his roots. A True Gent 🏴
Dogs snalled
Amen!
There cannot.
My name is Autumn, my mum named me after this song, such a beautiful song
My mum called me leafy 🍃
A song sung by a genius with a lovely voice.... I envy you :D
That is so awesome, your mum rocks!
My mom named me Aqualung. She was a huge Jethro Tull fan.
Justin Heywood vocals.
My husband has just passed and wants this song to be played I am going tomorrow to play it for him he loved it his so g to me, I am in tears god bless my love my sole mate my friend I love you so muxh
That's sad to hear hope your ok
@dianajackson618 thank you for your loverly reply
🙏
Very sad time i love this tune and had it played at my brothers funeral be strong
Im good hope you ok
Richard Burton's voice is the voice of excellence !
Always.
Yes. As is Justin Hayward's. Formidable combination.
One could pick Burton's voice out of ten thousand! It's just so distinctive, a Welsh voice full of coal dust and gravel
Yessir!
This really is a brilliant album,it never gets old 🗝️. 64yrs old , love it.
63 years old and still listen to it and yes the memories is sad cause I lost my brother who introduced this to me 😢
Richard Burton...that voice, a gift from God. 🏴
No, from his mom and dad!
No sf figure involved
First of all where did you see God in this video
RIP Richard Burton.
The Big Man treated us travelling football fans to an endless night to food and drink one night in Budapest. Never forgot his roots
This song never fails to get me all emotional & teary eyed.Richard Burton's narration gives me goosebumps 😢❤Has anyone here ever listened to the full album & really gotten into the story?Highly recommend, you won't regret it 😍❤❤
Yes indeed Sharon, on a late - night car journey . We were in a different world !
Yes!since I was a kid.Amazing album. I would say the best of all time.
yup since i was a kid 1979 had the original twin records with the artwork etc
Yes. Dead London and Thunderchild are my favourite tracks.
Where can I listen to the hole thing? I remember this as a child
Lost the love of my life to horrific cancer in 6wks. We travelled & was always recovering lost music & books. He'd never heard this + mum loved it also. She didn't have a life - so I gave her mine. Choosing a song for a funeral is heart breaking, but did ok. Can never get over grief though... So Joy, keep your chin up = it's the best we can do! xx
Sending you love and understanding from Scotland my friend .
He was lucky that he had you
One day at a time. :)
My mother passed away in November 2014 and this song was played at her funeral. It never fails to get me sobbing - I didn't attend her funeral since I was only 10 at the time but not a day goes by that I don't regret not going, but I wasn't ready to say goodbye and I never will be. Miss you, mother xx
💙🤗💙
To all the heartbroken;
We all voluntarily incarnated here on earth, to experience a disconnect, a godless life learning experience... perhaps as a necessary contrast from our previous heavenly existence!
Perhaps try transpose the feeling of this song of; the (temporary) loss we feel here on earth, to; the forgotten belonging/Love/ Homeliness of our previous Home in heaven. Even if you are Atheist,
Look-up NDE experiences & learn what they see beyond the "veil' learn again where we Came from/ & are going back to!, you will see through a new lens!.
God bless that little 10 yr old child xx
That's how life sometimes goes, little friend.....we cannot do otherwise than accept it, in the end...
I’m so very sorry Xxxxx
What a song what a album what a voice ❤
One of the greatest concept albums ever made. Rock at its finest
Today it is 25 years since my beloved father suddenly passed away (26.6.1997l and this is the first song I listened to after the terrible news came through. It is ironic that Welsh actor Richard Burton narrated this. My father was also Welsh. Very emotional but beautiful to listen to. Rest in paradise dad x
If you can find it on UA-cam, there is another adaptation of this production with British actor Liam Neeson doing the narration. It is a staged play interpretation, and simply mesmerizing!!
He was clearly important to you, and you’ll give the world his influence though you
I've been listening to this for nearly 40 years now, and I still love it. For me, "Forever Autumn" and "Thunderchild" are the highlights of a totally brilliant album.
my thoughts exactly, im just 23 but my father used to play these songs in the car and i was already in love with the book before listening to it and it has grown so much on me i cant help bt cry with both of those songs
I would also add Brave New World and The Spirit of Man there. Such good songs
I tear up when I hear Thunderchild
40 years were does time 🚶♀️ 🎠 ? Went to a car boot sale last Sunday found a mint copy of the War of the world's cost all of £2 ! ❤❤❤a real masterpiece
Parson Nathaniel is another great track, you feel the parson decending into madness. 💔
I saw Justin Haywood last nite in Lowell Massachusetts , and he sang this song, brought tears to my eyes! Wow so powerful so beautiful melody !!
Lucky you!
I hadn't heard this song since 1980 when my Dad used to play it over and over after my Mom committed suicide. He used to scare me and my sister with the 'machines from Mars' and only seeing the cover artwork now brings back shivers to my spine. It's funny that after all these years, I can still sing along the lyrics, though only now I understand the words 'cause you're not here'. At that time, aged 5, when hearing this song I could only feel an intense loneliness, which has taken me decades to get rid off. My Dad is 77 now, he had a stroke last year but is still there for me, just like he always was throughout all the tough times. I would like to listen this song together with him and cry out all those tears I could not cry when I was too young to understand what had happened.
Do it Robbie, it’ll be healing for both you and your Dad to listen again together.
Sending you a hug and love 🙏🏻💚
Bloody Hell!. Same here in my Australian Family. My Dad. Hard.
I’m sorry for your loss
An odd thing to say, but this album is the best adaptation of the novel, everything about it is terrifying in the right ways. The music is amazing throughout, but this track however, is fucking beautiful. A favourite of mine. Also the transition at 4:10 is... just... gah... perfection
Spot on
I agree
Have you heard the live version from 2005?
On the nose mate. Particularly the casting of David Essex and Burton for me.
It's literally the only adaptation faithful to the book that isn't a low budget movie
My husband and I always felt the Moody Blues were our band. He died 10 years ago from diabetic complications, 6 months before our 40th anniversary. I still weep when I hear this.
This album is the most amazing blend of fear, desperation, despair, hope and love that music and narrative has ever portrayed perfectly .
My darling Mum passed away weeks ago after a battle with MND and this was her funeral song. I’ll forever miss her 😢
My father died in 1996 from cancer I dedicated this song to him he loved autumn and when I was a child we would kick our way through autumns golden gown in the park together oh how I still miss him! 😢 rest in peace my wonderful intelligent kind father until we meet again ❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🕊🕊🕊
I lost a very close friend to cancer this song was played at her funeral i love the song it helps me through hard times its been nearly 9 years since she past not a day goes by i dont think of her wishing she was still here love u ali xxx
Richard Burton was a brilliant narrator.
Best album ever made. The music the singing and the narration of all the characters cannot be topped.
Third best... after Foxtrot and The wall.. 😉
Well, I'd dispute that, but I know where you're coming from! Have you heard 'Like a stone'? The lead singer, Chris Cornell, committed suicide at the age of 39! Then there's 'while my guitar gently weeps' by George Harrison.
So many great songs from that era! Where's all the genius talent gone?
My God how beautiful. Justin's voice is angelic. He has the most awesome voice I've ever heard. 🌹
I've had 56 years of this wonderful man's voice. His music is sheer poetry
Takes me to my childhood. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. When autumn was a very special time and Christmas was so much more special. Can anyone else explain why?. It just was the best time.😣
It was the best time. We thought we owed our parents and society a thank you, todays younger generation of snowflakes believe their parents and society owe them.
Back then, life was lived! Today mostly we go through the motions. I completely understand.❤️
There is no volume loud enough to do this track justice. So many elements, so many emotion-inducing moments. The strings, that guitar, Burton's voice, Justin's vocal, the lyrics...the goosebumps. I cave in, every single time.
Ik ben nu 73 ,wordt nog steeds emotioneel als ik dit hoor, wel 1van mijn favorieten ,kippenvel😢
I couldn't have put it better myself.Incredibly moving and stays with you
My brother and I used to listen to this soundtrack on a Sony reel to reel when we were young, always in the dark, was the best musically and Burton's voice made your mind go into another world
Well said ❤
HOLY SHIT.
Am I the only one that noticed that they actually animated the heat ray in the video?
You can see it going back and forth across _Thunder child's_ Fo'csle and A turret
I did not notice that only until I just see your comment! Thanks lol
Well spotted 👍
Yes about 4 seconds before I read your comment
I only noticed it because you pointed it out. 😂
I noticed.
I heard it 43 years ago and I am listening now, old 62
Me to
X x nah your 62 years young 😇😇😇🥰🥰
I to heard this in1978 loved it then now 63 still love it
Me too❤❤
A Gentle Rain Falls Softly On My Weary Eyes... a superb line from a superb song.
Never have I known such an amazing voice in Richard Burton!
As in I mean!
James Earl Jones gives Burton a run for his money on that count. Very close which ever you prefer.
@@68Jaguar420Gburton everytime mate sorry. Followed by sir David attenborough and Morgan Freeman. Imo
Watch the Burton tribute to Sinatra on you tube. It gives you goosebumps!
This was one of my dad's favourite things to listen to in the car on many day trips to the seaside sadly we lost him ten months ago and forever autumn was played at his funeral
I love you dad miss you terribly 😢
Sorry for your loss , I lost my dad last year so I know your pain . God bless your dad. It's a tough road ahead but you'll get though it at your own pace.
@@phillipmanning4995 thank you for your kind words
I'm sorry for your loss. If your father loved this , then I'm guessing he was a great bloke..👍🏻👍🏻😞
Thank you for you kind words Dad truly was a great bloke he definitely was one in a million
It is a wonderful composition that strums the strings on many guitars and hearts. My thoughts to you all for your losses ❤
We played this at my dad’s funeral 21 years ago this song reminds me of him so much ❤
The mind of H.G. Wells amazes me, how could he have had a vision of Aliens from Mars, the album still gives me goosebumps..✌❤
Richard Burton is the master of this, no one comes close to beating one of the greatest actors ever in my eyes.
Powerful, precious memories of my childhood, my Dads song, gone 22yrs today, this still gives me goosebumps 💙💙 Dad 💙💙
Lost my mum in Feb this year.she loved this whole album. Losing any family member is the hardest thing I have had to endure in my 50 years.rest peacefully mum ❣
Lost dad 2 years ago today. This was his song. We inherited his truck the first time we drove it after he passed this was on the radio almost like a sign. And yes we had it at his funeral
I was in hospital in 1978. My uncle taped it and I played it so much he had to do another copy. It's still one of my favourite albums of all time. Forever Autumn is also still one of my favourite songs ever. This album though owes its success due to - imo - Richard Burton's silky voice.
I loved this song in the 1970's at 16,
I love it even more at 61
Richard Burtons voice is so distinctive. Perfect.
A great song...a great story told by Richard Burton!!
A great voice of Justin Hayward!!!
Still magic and the tears still flow … a masterpiece 🙏
justin haywood and richard burton are just sublime on this track
To John without you my life is Forever Autumn RIP my love
💔
❤️
💔
This by far is the best version.
An incredible blending of classical British art, if one can still say such a thing.
I,ll never forget the my dad bought this Album home in 1979, he was so exited, we sat down with lights off and a couple of candles lit, I was 15 at the time and it really scared my sisters lol, anyway it blew my mind and I haven,t stopped listening to probably one of the best Albums of all time.
I almost cried in that music at the musical.
From 14 to 65 ... Moody Blues and tears in my eyes. I see so many people listening at or near my age. I am sure you wonder where did the years go.
To my lost love............thank you for our time despite the decades since
After all these decades, I found this beautiful song again. 💕💕💕💕.
Perfect
Idling in bed at 2pm on a Sunday, hear a car pass playing this song, it inspired me to get up. Thank you random driver for helping me get up.
That spoken voice! A shiver down the spine, resonance.
Burton!!!
@@TheChrisleekay damn and the man is just there. never in the history of the world. could any body else have given this classic such a more scary feel.
A snapshot from a much much much much much much classier age.
I know it word for word, all the way through.🤛
My music teacher at Junior school in 78 let me listen to this album. Amazing feelings and changed my life of music
I remember listening to this as a child and it was terrifying. As an adult, its heart-breaking.
Tomorrow I will be visiting London to see the "Jeff Wayne's The Musical War of The Worlds: Live Experience". This music has been a staple of my childhood and early adult life and I cannot wait to experience this magic live!
How was it? I was prompted to come here by an advert for that!
@@gvigary1 it was fantastic! I was disappointed when it finished, as I wished I could’ve spent the whole day there. My only small gripe is that for a “musical experience” it hardly touched on the any of the songs, barring “Forever Autumn” and the first 2 minutes of “The Spirit of Man”
I must say though, the VR sequence for forever autumn was spectacular
Awesome, enjoy
This will never get old as Justin Hayward could nail this classic.....
I dedicate this song to my mum who passed away this morning. I love you mum. Im going to miss you.😢
Hugs. So sorry
Big part of my life. First heard in 80s. 2023,still breaking my heart. X
This song is not only brilliant and a master piece of music, it's a story that Richard Burton brings to life with his narrative voice brings to life and makes the story come alive in my mind not to mention the musical master piece.
I've still got the original vinyl record and it still astounds me ❤👌🏻👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤘✌️
This song has to be one song I'll never get sick of. Remembering good times and bad times. Wish the bad time will go away 😢
This song always reminds me of my late mum, the times she'd walk me to the crossing on the way to school, and we'd used kick our way through the leaves on our way, always love ya mum and always missed ❤️
Amazing how good it is when you just sit and listen to it as a whole album. An effortless experience. They don't make 'em like they used to ...
The first time I heard this song was on a night driving down a country road on the way to a barn dance with two coworkers who were older than I.
It was Autumn and the leaves were skittering across the road as the headlights came upon them on that dark concession road.
Thank you Terry for the introduction of the excellent album, which as a senior woman I still listen to. 😊🇨🇦
This is a masterpiece i was 26 when this was released and along with War of the Worlds (original) it was the music i listened to endlessly , it just captivated me then and still does now
The Blues were ahead of the times.
I was lucky enough to see the stage show directed by Jeff Wayne where Justin Hayward performed this song. Ricahard Burton only appeared as a hologram. It was still very reminiscent of the 1978 album. I remember it fondly and still drink coffee from my mug I bought from the merchandise stall. The Martian fighting machine sending lasers into the audience was chilling.
I wish I had bought the mug... Haywood amazing
@@rncbshef84 I am so glad I saw Justin perform that song on stage. Not truly live, but I was glad I was there nonetheless. Jeff Wayne created a musical that can be celebrated for the generations moving forward. BTW coffee tastes like the survival of the human race from that mug! Green flashes mean nothing to the person who just sipped.
Such a Deep Tune this, you can feel the emotion in his voice , complimented nicely by the flute or whatever instrument it is. Timeless Classic.
Be great to here it played on a huge pipe organ!!!! Or even better in a giant cavern 😂 😂
I heard this in 1978 when I was 18. My friend brought this album to work one evening. We worked in an electronic store so no problem playing music at the store.
When he told me what the album was I thought that it was the stupidest concept I had ever heard of. Well needless to say I was blown away. I'm 62 and catch myself singing these songs to myself while driving. I need another copy of this album. I bet it sounds way better on cd than it did on cassette.
Beautiful: Jeff Wayne, Richard Burton, Justin Hayward: brillant sound, story and voices! Timeless!
My late 70s childhood absolutely wonderful 👍 listened to the whole album magical touching sad
My late grandad loved War of The Worlds and Richard Burton as we use to listen to it together sometimes when I was a kid. I always think of my grandfather when I hear this song. Now I'm 30 and love singing war of the worlds songs as well as mimicking the amazing and great Richard Burton narration. It would be a dream to perform the narration or sing some of the songs in the official musical... I reckon I be great at it :)
Then go for it......
You are so lucky you got to spend time with your grandfather. Mine were long gone before 1978.
@@krisgreenwood5173 I can relate.
Beautiful, just memories I cherish. X
I had forgotten how much i loved this .
I love that song so much...kicking though autumn's golden gown today made me think of it. I still have the War of the Worlds album! xoxo Justin Hayward and the Moody Blues! 💖☺️
And Rick Wakeman
I also still have the album.
My grandpa died when i was young, and this song was playing at his funeral and now whenever i hear it i think of him
This is a true masterpiece.....
My Dad loved this so much.❤
A wonderful song to remember people who are no longer here
I still get a chill when I hear the steamers whistle, what an amazing album.54 this year, first album I bought when I started work, still have it
My mother discovered Justin Hayward (and this song and this album ... but mostly Justin Hayward!) when she was 14 in 1978.
I remember my dad teaching me how to listen and appreciate music. And also looking at the booklet while listening to this classic album. It will never happen again. So sad, modern music will never stand the test of time, Basically it’s shit and kids have no imagination
Saw the live show at Londons 02 Centre and Justin Hayward still sings it brilliantly .🎼🎶🎵🎶
I first heard this whole album at the age of 10 back when it was released. I was fascinated with the artwork the story telling and of course the songs! To this day I still love it... My mom sadly passed in September so I dedicate Forever Autumn to her memory ❤
💔
If there is a Bar in heaven...🤔
Richard Burton, Peter o toole , Richard Harris, Oliver Reed...what a night that would be...👍👍😄
Assuming there's unlimited beer! Burton and O'Toole were head and shoulders better than the other two. Sadly too young to have either Burton or O'Toole on the stage
34 years ago I listened tothis with my darling husband. he's nolonger here, but he is always here with me
The characters brought together for this album was a stroke of genius. The narration by Richard Burton, sung by Justin Hayward, Phil Lynot etc, an absolutely incredible album that is a fresh today as the day it was released.
Voice. An underappreciated instrument. Burton - so British. Hayward - poet.
Timeless love it I'm 54 first heard at 9😂🙏🏼💕
this may be the most perfect song in music history...
I've listened to this track perhaps 10,000 times since it was new. With the fantastic music and Burton's narration, it sums up the grandeur of the entire "War of the Worlds" story in a lasting way. Thanks, Mr. Wayne.
Loved this album when it was released and love it to this day. Justin Hayward's voice coupled with these lyrics are hauntingly beautiful. And Richard Burton's narration painted incredible word pictures!
Born in 1978 still listening in 2022.
I'll take this over the modern day disposable music any day.
Beautiful song flows nicely
This song will always remind me of my pet dog Manchester Terrier he passed away in 2005 and I was devistated over my pet dog Floyd and everytime that I listen to this song I get all chocked up and I start crying and I get very emotional because I really did love my dog and he was almost part of the family and he fitted in with us all really good and he was a lovely dog and a very effectionate and loving type of dog as well and today he's very sadly missed but myself and my family will never forget him he was a very special pet dog to us all and we loved him until the very end.
The tolling bells of doom. That part always gives me shivers.
nice pfp, great taste in music
