It's personal preference if you want ice or not. Me personally, refuse to have ice in my Whiskey. For me, it waters it down, if I'm paying top dollar for a bottle of Scotland's finest, I'm getting my monies worth lol. Don't listen to 'em haters who are probably pissed off they didn't get any free bottles lol.

WHAHAAhahahahahaha, that Laphroaig reaction! I was waiting for that reaction. Some people love that stuff.
Someone once asked me what whisky is like. I said it's like face-planting into a burning peat bog, but the 18-year-old Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are like face-planting into a pool of honey in a burning peat bog and 18-year-old Glenmorangie is like kissing someone who recently face-planted into a burning peat bog.
Laphroaig is like being knocked face-dirst into a heap of kippers in a burning peat bog with a barrel of kippers and then having it emptied over you and set on fire.

Well done for telling the difference. Blending whiskey allows for the use of cheaper grains, and does not require the same amount of time to age. This allows a distiller to produce a blended whiskey faster, and for less money. As a result, the demand for blended whiskey is higher, despite the fact that the single malts have an obvious flavor advantage.

  • @thesleepstate
    @thesleepstate 5 років тому +1

Don't drink Whisky neat or with ice, mix with a small amount of ambient temperature water - it opens up the flavour profile. I use about 1/4 the amount of water, do it to taste. Aged single malts tend to have more character. Less burn obviously too. Love how each bottle had it's own rating scale 😂

The taste of a Whisky (Whisky spelt with an e is Irish Whiskey) is very much personal choice. I always drank Laphroaig or single malts when I lived in the UK because blended Whiskies always gave me a hangover! You must also remember that the same make of Whisky like Johnny Walker (Black, Green, Red and Blue) may have a different alcohol content. If I remember on the Isle of Wight there is or at least was a pub (The Wight Mouse Inn?) where you could drink a different Whisky every day of the year!

Hi Alana, great Vid, as always.. There's a lot of nonsense spoken about whisky, wine, beer, etc, but ice, apparently alters the flavour. Having said that, whatever floats your boat in my opinion and ignore what others say. So, a bit of info.. All Scotch whisky is malt and then there are 2 types, single malt and blended malt. Blended malt means that it is a blend of different whiskies to produce a specific flavour/taste. Single malts are as they sound, from one barrel and will have their unique flavour/taste. Single malts tend to be more expensive than blended, blended can start at £13 (Asda) and single malt start £20-25, but there is cross over and single malts can go through the roof, price wise. There are loads of single malts with varying levels of peat, generally, the darker the whisky the more peat flavour.. Anyway, find the ones that you like, your purse likes, add ice, if you want to and enjoy... Slainte

Never put ice in malt, only a touch of water. Plain or blended whisky is fine with ice. Idea age is 21 for Laphroaig, 10 is a bit rough, and like you I had the same reaction the first time, then with 'practice' I found I like it. A lot. If you have money to burn then try the quarter cask, not so peaty and smoother. Another good one is J.J. Smiths 21 year old Glenlivet. Very nice.

    Hi Alanna,
I'm Scottish and don't have a problem with you having ice in any of them. But I will say it probably hurt the Laphroaig more as it tastes a little better when warmed up. It is the peatiest smokiest of the island whiskies I've tried. It tastes like you have licked an ashtray, I find Bowmore to be a lot nicer whilst retaining some smokiness. If you want to try more single malt whisky., if you can get them to try, I would suggest Dalmore, Glenlivet and Macallan .

The problem is trying to score a single malt against a blend. There are so many different single malts all with quite distinct flavours. Here I have two rare malts. A 25 year old single malt from the North Port Distillery. Note it closed in 1980 and there is a supermarket on the site now! The other is an 18 year old Glencadam Single Malt. Both of these distilleries were based in Brechin, Scotland and my Grandad was born in a cottage just behind the Glencadam Distillery. Glencadam is still in operation today. Both these malts would blow your socks off at 60% volume. You'd hate the North Port because it's a peaty taste. However, the Glencadam is much smoother. You'd like it, but you'd be wasted in no time.

I am going, I am going where streams of whiskey are flowing.
    Great video loved it.
My GF puts frozen grapes in hers so not to alter the taste but still keep it chilled.

That's a good idea for chilling a drink without watering it down. Changing the temperature will still change the flavours experienced. If you've ever tasted a warm can of Coke, you would know that.

I believe whiskey gets its colour from the barrels, the colour depends on how long the whiskey has been in the barrels. Jura, Gentleman Jack, Jamesons are nice. Jura can be peaty though. Canadian Club is also quite nice, but you probably know that.

I know it is US, and not what you are testing but for me Jack Daniels Old Number 7 is the best bourbon. To taste any booze for a taste test, you should not water it down and you spin to test viscosity, sip with air ( slurp) swish and so you don't get drunk, spit. that last part is nuts.

Yep, it was ridiculous here about a week & a half back-they were saying that I think the Thursday was the hottest day of the year, but for me it was the day before that felt the hottest in Thanet.

There is a scale running from smooth to peaty, the blends fall somewhere in the middle.
I you want to try smooth, go for Glenmorangie or Glenlivet - the opposite of the Laphroaig you tried.

Single malts are an acquired taste, which is why blended whiskys are more popular. You should have tried Jameson's Irish whiskey too. The Irish were the first people to make whisky, and yes it is spelt whiskey. For something completely different, try Southern Comfort, an American bourbon whisky liqueur.

Laphroaig is by far the peatiest whisky out there and is definitely an acquired taste. I've never tried green label, but I know black label has subtle peat (smoked dirt) flavours.

Living in Scotland, I have quite a few friends and family who enjoy a fine malt. I don't drink the stuff myself but my Dad and my friends all say that the stuff from the Highlands and Islands are the best. Just the other day I had to stop my friend from spending £40 on a bottle of Highland Park because he needed the money to buy more important things!!!! (Plus you get bonus points from me for pronouncing Laphroaig the right way!!! Not many Brits do!!!!)

There are few great whiskies. One that most definitely is is Seagram’s VO. Not Canadian Club, but Seagram’s VO. This Australian loves that Canadian whisky to the point that I will most definitely order it on my death bed!

When I was working a bar in Durban South Africa MANY years ago I had a terrible habit if pouring all the bits from all the proprietary brands into one bottle and then loading the racks with full bottles. at the end of the night I topped up the black and white whiskey bottle with the dregs of all the others. As sods law would have it my first customers the next day was the Black and White whisky rep with a guest. He ranted and raved about the superior taste of his brand bought about 3 drinks each and did not notice my re-blending. So that proved all Blended whisky's taste the same

Another great post, very funny and the blended whisky thing, i think each year the top whisky distillers gather around and blend the top most whisky's....this is in Scotland, there is no other country that makes whisky..honest....anyway they blend the top whisky's and make a blend called Famous Grouse....then the whisky's that get left make a less good blend and so on....its what i was told, also the single malt whisky'd can taste so different. You looked great on the video, in fact you were 'glowing'.....excellent vid.

Really enjoyed watching this video having seen the gin one. I totally agree with you the last whisky the peaty one is not nice. For me personally the best U.K made whiskey is not Scotch, it is made on the North Coast of Northern Ireland, and it is Bushmills. The oldest UK distillery first produced in 1608, do try that if you haven't already. Irish Whiskey is great, Powers, Paddy's, Jameson etc are great but for me Bushmills it just has that something extra. Canadian folk are totally cool in my opinion, thanks for sharing your videos with us.

You don't need to be a whiskey expert to know what you like or dislike. Everybody has different tastes and that's cool. I'm currently trying different minerals waters. I like the Tesco own brand stuff even though its cheaper than some of the fancy brands. Taste is very subjective.

The last one is a mans mans whiskey. The problem with ice is that it kills flavour, but they make the most wonderful whiskey and ice lollies.

So that's Gin and Whiskey ticked off the list but we still have Vodka, baijiu, tequila, rum, brandy, singani and soju to go to name just a few distilled drinks. We can then move onto Beer, wine, and cider for the fermented drinks series of testing.
Bless her, we can't keep voting to get her half cut every week though. Maybe inter-space it with candy one week then back to the booze ;)
Keep smiling Alanna and loving life :)

    Alanna's on the p155 again.... 😂
Incidently, Glayva is nice. It's a liqueur.
If you go Thailand, try their vodka's (genuine names "Black Cock, Red Cock". Go well with soft drinks.
Also, Thai Rice Whiskey, otherwise known as Lo Kao. Powerful. You could run a car off it. Again, good with coke or lemonade.
Brilliant video. Always look forward to them.
