The good thing about the toaks stove is you don’t need to burn off the alcohol like you did. You just lift the windscreen, put the pot on to the stove and it snuffs the flame. After a minute the stove is cool enough to pick up and the stove is perfect for pouring it back in your bottle with zero wastage as it has no fabric inside the stove.
I picked up the same stand about 4-5 months ago. It went together wonky at first, but loosened up after 3-4 uses. It also needed to be bent into a slightly tighter curve. It works well with a whole bunch of my MiniBull (Bongo,, M3-SB, etc.) and other alcohol burners (Evernew & Trangia). One neat trick: I took my OXO can opener, which leaves smooth edges, and cut a can lid for use as a solid fuel platform. You can also flip the stand if you want to vary the height of the pot support to use as a platform for the solid fuel instead. The disassembled stand fits nice in my Hidden Woodsmen brew kit pouch along with the stakes. I bought this stand on a whim and I'm glad I did. It has proven itself useful.
Great stand. I use it with a Toaks Siphon stove and Toaks 550ml cup/pot. I put the stakes in the bag that came with my Toaks long handled spoon along with the spoon and I keep the plates assembled and put them in the bag the cup came in. The cup fits perfectly inside the assembled plates. Nice compact ultralight solo kit.
Just bought it and it’s arriving soon. Thanks, Doc. Have considered this design in my head, thinking why doesn’t someone do this. They did. Thanks again, from East Tennessee
This toaks combo is perfect for making rice with the Keith rice cooker. You can light the burner and forget about it. When it burns out the rice is done!
Looks like the stakes cut be cut down some to be able to pack it in a smaller pouch, ect. The fact that the cup sits below the sides of the stand should make it very efficient in windier weather. Thanks Ernie!
Stick the stakes into the dirt or sand to cool them off. Or use some water. And considering the amount of titanium vs what a 750ml mug cost I think that this right on par. Also it looks like you could use it with wood or solid fuel in an emergency.
The cons start with the fact that you can make your own efficient stove and make a windscreen from an oven liner sheet. Boil times are similar to my Supercat stove with a super light gauge titanium foil windscreen. Total weight : 5/8 oz. (15 gm.). I use a 1.3 liter Evernew titanium pot. Windscreen diameter is adjustable with simple paper clips. Downside: there is a learning curve to know how much fuel to use. Simmering is possible by placing a tealight candle tin inside of the stove and filling that with alcohol first, and allowing some to fill the rest of the stove. It's been my go-to since 2010. That Chinese stuff is great, if you don't mind building the economy that will eventually crush ours. The time is short.
Lol the US crushes economies all over the world....their are other players now. Also why keep voting in your politicians who actively encourage a globalist market.
I bought mine in a bundle (with the siphon stove and a 900ml pot) - it didn’t include the stakes, but the pot sits over the top of the stand. It also came with a carrying case for the stand, the stove, and the pot…
I would really like to see a comparison video between the Toaks Ti stand & the Toaks pot stand. It’s hard to tell the real difference with just crappy internet pictures. One has the tent pegs & the other the pot sits on top, but a video showing size difference & pros and cons would be nice if you have both.
I've got one & it works great with my Trangia &Toaks 750mL pot! For storage, the four plates fit right in my 750mL pot, next to the Trangia stove. The only thing inconvenient is the stakes; since they don't fit in the pot, too, they're easy to misplace!
Looks like you might be able to cut some of the pegs shorter. Also, try purchasing skewers at the dollar store and cut them to the desired length. Not Ti but....just makes life a little easier. I have the Toaks 750 ml. pot with the bale and butterfly handles. At 3x3 inches don't you have to "pinch" the 4 sides to make them fit inside the pot? Is your pot the same as mine (bale/butterfly), Thanks!
@@walkerone9833 thanks for the suggestion about the skewers! I’d like to have everything together. I just looked up the one with the bail handle; that looks pretty useful! Mine doesn’t have that, but it does have the butterfly handles. There’s enough curve to the Ti pieces so they fit right in the pot, right next to the Trangia.
Chris, I have added a makeshift bale to a couple of stainless steel cups....like the Stanley green cup pot and the Walmart $5. 18 oz. SS cup. Works out well. I used the drill the hole method instead of the wrap the wire around the top idea. Don't trust that to stay on long term. Never drilled Ti but I'll bet you can do it. Just a suggestion. Good luck.
Hi Chris, I've been keeping my stakes inside the little pocket of the orange bag pointed side up with a lighter and now after 10 months I still have both of them so it works for me. Not inside the pot but still there. Following the 2 is 1 thought always a good idea to have a spare stake that would fit the holes of the pot stand somewhere in your pack for emergencies.
There's a different pot stand that Toaks makes which doesn't use the tent stakes and has larger windows on the stand. It goes together exactly the same way. I'm curious if anyone knows which version Toaks developed first. This does look like a well executed stand/windscreen.
I have had mine about 6 months and like it a lot with my Toaks 650ml pot. I keep the stakes rubber banded to my alcohol bottle but I am thinking about making new cross members that are shorter. I am using denatured ethyl alcohol fuel from Home Depot which is less toxic than pure methanol like yellow Heet in terms of skin absorption. My burner is a home made one (Tetkoba's Capillary Hoop Stove) that has similar dimensions to the Toaks burner. Only issue is that here in Oregon, you can't use an alcohol stove above 5500 feet, which is where I like to backpack.
@Jamie Moore: _"... In Oregon, you can't use an alcohol stove above 5500 feet."_ Why not? Is there some kind of legal restriction against it? Because there is no practical reason for it. As long as you know that water boils at only 205° F at 5500 feet, so you must let food cook longer.
Idea ... Old Vintage Alcohol chaffing fondue Burner. The ones with the asbestos wick/burner inside. I bought one on eBay. Thing burns for 7 hours and very little fuel. Boils water, heats food, etc. The newer ones are horrible and don't burn very well at all. The older vintage ones are great.
This is pretty interesting... I think that if you are all about the weight, there's an argument to be made for this. But the firebox nano weighs two ounces more, burns alcohol, solid fuel, wood, pellets, etc, is pretty bombproof, can accommodate larger pots, and doesn't require assembly of the stove itself. However, this one does cut down on wind where the pot meets the flame.
I like mine for narrower pots, but think there would be an issue with a wider pot or frypan. A wider pot sitting on top may restrict exhaust and thus dampen down the flame and cause flareups through the bottom intake vents. Thanks for the video doc; I'm going to experiment with a frypan and see what ensues.
I've tried with a larger pot sitting on top of the stand and I had to put the pot a little on the side otherwise it would simply stop the alcohol from burning. A bit annoying and with a large pan it's really not possible. At least not without having something else to put the pan on that allows to have a gap between the top of the stand and the bottom of the pan.
@@mrtru1te I've been experimenting with turning the stand upside down with the holes on the top and creating some gap on the bottom, but it makes the whole thing pretty unstable. Thank you for the feedback.
Canadian Amazon has a different version of this. It has no tent steaks going through the body but wider holes for more air flow maybe? It also looks smaller than the one you have. You have some good thoughts on why to carry this or something similar. Thanks.
I have used alcohol stoves for years and never had a soot problem. Never. Maybe it was the alcohol you were using. Try the yellow bottle Heat as in the vid or denatured alcohol. No soot problems ever. Winter climates can make your pocket rocket troublesome. Weather never bothers alcohol.
I agree, optimally a pot stand needs to be a wind shield and a wind shield needs to be a pot stand - why have 2 things? This one looks reasonable but perhaps not a great windshield with those huge holes at the bottom. Possibly the round design is better than the Trangia / Argus triangle…
I have some of those "bushcraft" mini grill grates that work "grate" for that :-) I flip the stand, use a can lid as a solid fuel base, and a grate on top. Works fine.
It is a limiting design. Might work relatively well with smaller diameter pots, certainly not with pans or normal size pots. Then again small diameter pots are not so well suited to a wider flame pattern of an alcohol burner.
Toaks in my opinion has never made a design that is not flawed in one way or other. I am sort of happy with my 1100ml pot with bail handle. Except the lid, it is soon in open fire. The stands that sort of try be an alcohol burner windscreen same time. There is I guess a newer version without these overly long tent pegs lol. It is better for bigger vessels to boil with, but flawed in my opinion too. Then that twigstove that is trying to be advertised as a wood gasifier one. Try keep that alone burning without tilting and then what it is trying to boil. Ernie instead coming advertising what ever, you should be critical to these designs. In my opinion for alcohol burners, the windscreen should be separate. I have one bought in site that i can't give any links nor like the site, but it works. It is just 2 steel plates joined by a bayonet sort of way. Trangia 27 or 25 are of course luxury items for cooking, if not minding the rattle and weight.
I think the new toaks stand doesn't have stakes, or at least mine doesn't. It's basically the same design but the pot sits on top of the stand, not the stakes.
I don’t think you can use it with a bigger pot or pan than will fit inside probably will not get enough air. Yes I know that would also reduce the efficiency even if it did but sometimes you just want a frying pan. Keep up the videos stay safe.
