I love how they made Jim Fox play all lame until Elvin joins him at the kit. If you haven't seen Jimmy play, look up the James Gang video from 1971 live at the Taverne De L'Olympia, you'll know why the band was named for him.
This is the movie I spoke about in my comments on Elvin's "Three Card Molly" demonstration clip. Thank YOU buggzugg for posting this super rare clip. It is so cool and just mindboggling. Elvin slays the drums!
Would have been even better if after shooting the guy John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and Jimmie Garrison come on stage and rip through Giant Steps with Elvin on drums. Too bad Trane died in ‘67.
Described in Earl Palmer's book "BackBeat" Transcribed from a Movieola Editing Machine because of sound problems, paid overtime plus bonus for Palmer's professional job.
Earl Palmer overdubbed Elvin Jones' drum solo cus of problems with the sound... apparently the producers were so impressed he received a bonus for doing such a good job of playing in sync to the video!
That great Gretsch SOUND! And, of course the classic K Zildjians. God bless Elvin Jones. Got to see him a year and a half before he passed. Keiko still set up his drums and he had quit smoking by then. My hero. Thanks for posting this rare clip.
Actually this ain't Elvin Jones who you are hearing. The film crew made a mistake and didn't record sound of this elvin's solo. It was played afterwards by Earl Palmer!
Uh.....yeah it IS Elvin playing and that is HIM on the soundtrack...I got the VHS tape and DVD of this movie, and I recall reading Elvin's interview in the old "Jazz & Pop" magazine. He never mentioned Earl Palmer overdubbing his solo due to some "malfunction". Man....who TOLD you this? All respect to the great studio great Earl Palmer, but.....I seriously doubt he could duplicate Elvin Jones' solo or his style. No one could.
Well that's a common knowledge. There used to be even a video in UA-cam where Earl Palmer talked about over dubbing sessions for that film. Just google "Elvin Jones, Earl Palmer, Zachariah"
Earl Palmer himself said he overdubbed the drums in his book "Backbeat." He said that the volume was so low that it wasn't usable and they had Earl transcribe Elvin's solo & do an overdub.
I saw this in the movies. Elvin as a cowboy was a riot. Did you ever hear the story that the sound track of the drum solo was lost and the great studio drummer Earl Palmer had to re record it note for note just by watching Elvin's hands and body moving!
“Elvin [Jones] looks SO good in it” is appropriate because Earl Palmer played the sound track. Because of a problem, he was asked to recreate Elvin Jones drumming in Zachariah. With a moviola and blank sheet music, Earl Palmer transcribed Elvin Jones drum solo and played. Union scale, plus a bonus, all described in his biography, Backbeat.
I was just looking at this again, first time I’ve seen this clip when he shoots the guy first! As for Earl Palmer overdubs, if you watch carefully there’s a moment at 3:58 where you see Elvin play the rack Tom but you hear a snare drum which backs up the story
it is a fact that when they filmed this they were not able to use the drum audio for technical reasons. Earl Palmer came in & overdubbed the drums. Pretty amazing feat...!
YES! That is EXACTLY what you get for calling Elvin Jones "boy" -- This has to be the best movie ever, even if every other scene sucks. If you don't know who Elvin Jones is, you shouldn't be commenting. Also -- go buy a damn record.
Thanks,Steve. As you may be aware,Elvin used to send me to sub for him......with Tyree Glenn,The Sweets-Jimmy Forrest Quintet (Tommy Flanagan, Tommy Potter),& a folk recording session, with Barry Galbreath,& George Duvier,& Jimmy Jones......STUDIO GUYS,ALL!HE must be white,to've brought that up.
I concur Jimmy. I am old enough to remember when this (now) cult movie came out. I also had the copy of the defunct magazine "Jazz & Pop", where there was an interesting interview with Elvin. This was about the time Ginger Baker supposedly "challenged" Elvin to a drum battle. Earl Palmer played on a lot of legendary tracks and hit records, no question. But the theory that he overdubbed Elvin's solo here is absolutely ABSURD. I respect your playing and status in music, and I know you are correct. There are no "alternative facts" here.
I just needed to see Elvin Jones kill a man and then play a drum solo to cheer me up during these troubled times. It's also an honor to be watching the same video as Jimmy Wormworth -- you are a fantastic drummer, and I hope you (and your talented family) are well. It's terrible how this messed-up country doesn't recognize jazz legends, like yourself, and so many others that I've loved listening to over the years, like it should. If you ever see this comment, thank you for all you've done for us.
Liam Watson the story is in Earl Palmers autobiography, Backbeat. the live sound was unusable so they asked EP to overdub it. He had to transcribe the whole solo and re record in a day. Elvin Jones composed it, Earl Palmer played it. Earl Palmer was a jazz player, even though he invented rock and roll drumming
magik z Transcription is difficult. A lot of Elvin’s drum solos are impossible to transcribe. He played like no other drummer could. Earl Palmer may have had to listen carefully so that he could sound like Elvin.
Liam Watson I agree. That’s why Earl Palmer was so proud. Anyway, have a look in his book, if you are a drummer, musician or are interested in American pop music, it’s a great book.
CANT WE ALL GET ALONG?I SAW ELVIN HE WAS JUST A HUMAN HE WAS JUST DUMBING DOWN THE MOVIE DRUMMING ON THIS SET HERE TAKE A CHILL PILL ANGRY COMMENTORS THX
That just blew my mind! Elvin Jones in a western! I love it.
The great Elvin Jones! What a solo! The man was a beast on the drums....the way he made time swell up almost like an elastic band. One of a kind.
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen. Thank you. I can not wait to share it with all my fellow music nerds :)
how is this great?? XD
@@lastnamefirst4035 dude elvin jones need a giiiiig

Yess!! He's a badass in his own right!
This is the movie I spoke about in my comments on Elvin's "Three Card Molly" demonstration clip. Thank YOU buggzugg for posting this super rare clip. It is so cool and just mindboggling. Elvin slays the drums!

The great Earl Palmer actually had to overdub Elvin's track because the audio got lost. Amazing!
wait really??? Crazy.... source?
Earl Palmer: greatest rock & roll drummer ever, ever.
Jim Gordon, but yeah that is Earl Palmer iirc.

I saw this in the movies. Elvin as a cowboy was a riot. Did you ever hear the story that the sound track of the drum solo was lost and the great studio drummer Earl Palmer had to re record it note for note just by watching Elvin's hands and body moving!
Well, judging by the sound I thought Elvin was far from his best. Is this story just an anecdote or is it verifiable?
@@no1shere710 It's in Palmer's biography: Backbeat

Dubbing is only in some parts of the solo.
I Spoke With Elvin about This Movie At Bakers Keyboard Lounge In Detroit, He Had A Good Laugh About It
The 70s fuckin' ROCKED!!!!
As an actor, Elvin was a superior drummer.
I'm glad that it was reported that what we hear is not Elvin Jones.
I was embarrassed hearing that. Elvin plays much better.
best showdown in the history of westerns

Your Right
I can't get over this.
One of my Favorite Drummers in a Movie 😮 his innovation is extensive.
Does anyone know the name of the song that starts at 1:30?
This is the most badass thing I've ever seen, didn't know Elvin was in a western
Yes! Elvin Jones: a killer drummer!!!
Wow in true Elvin fashion he is definitely beating the holy shit out of those poor Gretsch RB drums!
According to Dennis McNally's history of The Grateful Dead, they were considered for band role in this movie. Mickey's dad was against the idea.
Bc mickeys dad wouldnt have made as much money as he wanted
Rock and jazz in a Western ?!?! Wow!! And a kick ass solo drum!!!
Can someone explain the plot please?
It's just the best scene ever in any film.
Is that a Morgan Freeman voiceover saying "now now sonny"? LOL
Fuck no! Lol!
it is a fact that when they filmed this they were not able to use the drum audio for technical reasons. Earl Palmer came in & overdubbed the drums. Pretty amazing feat...!
Jim Fox looks almost like Leon Russell here without his glasses.
4:05 He hits the bassist and keeps going.
Sounds like their their playing 2 drum kits it’s soooo unbelievably nasty man I love it
That's Got to be Elvin Playing. Sounds just like him

Elvin the Greatest....and can act too...or was he just being his cool self......
Great drum solo
you don't see that everyday
The drum solo was overdubbed by another drumming legend, Earl Palmer

That is not an Elvin Jones drum solo, the film makers butchered it, chopped it up, half of it is mixed with Earl Palmer faking Elvin badly.
Yes!
Wow!
That’s some weird shit right there!
Elvin plays for keeps, he works up a serious sweat!
Sameer Gupta sent me
Elvin always sounded like random flailing of the hands.
Holly shit that was badass
The man appears to be blind hince the first drummer

What hell did I just watch?
That's what happens when poeple get too musically educated and forget why they began to play music. Or when the education kills talent.
