  • Wondering if the door seal collects water and releases it in the slider door sill area, increasing corrosion. There are lots of holes in the two vertical sections of the (hollow) seal.
This van sat outside in the Pacific Northwest for 15 years, and the slider door sill is just about the only rust on the van.
Maybe some vans collect water thru these holes. It could be worthwhile to check your van slider seal and see if theres water in the lower section.
I punched holes thru to the bottom. See video: • Vanagon door sill rust...

Im might be wrong here but I guess the seal has been fitted wrong way around ? those holes should be feacing out to invite water out NOT in

Original seal in original configuration. It is the same on my other Vanagon.

I think those holes are meant to let moisture drain out but in your case is having the opposite effect. Have you done anything to remediate the rust on your sil? I’m thinking of doing Por15 to mine. Not sure of feasibility?

I scraped and brushed all the scale rust away (as feasible). Then treated it with a phosphoric rust converter. Then I sprayed Eastwood Rust Encapsulator on it.
