  • Ankylosaur week is here so what great timing to feature an ankylosaur, or nodosaur to be accurate - the excellent PNSO Borealopelta!
    Now I’ve reviewed this figure before. But that was as is. What we have is a model repainted by a master artist - Raúl Pedroche, better known on social media as Gex.
    Gex is not just a master painter, but also does conversion of existing models to create models the way he wants them. The PNSO sculpt is satisfying enough so there was no need for that, but I wanted those spikes I saw in the release images back! And I think I have. Not just that, but also a more real, granular look caused by restoration of detail in the osteoderms, the flank and skirting spikes of scutes, and even the underbelly receives some colour and gunk.
    Gex can be contacted best via Instagram at “gex_pdroche”.
    There you can see the projects he has completed as well as what he is currently working on. No spoilers intended, but you MUST check out his Ceratopsians conversions! He can also be found on Facebook by searching for “Gex P Droche”
    Do also look out for other ankylosaur related contacts using the following hashtags.

    This is how it should have been from the factory from the beginning!
    BEAUTIFUL DINOSAUR❗
    all the wonderful details of the sculpture now stand out in view
    👏👏👏👏👏

      Indeed a great paint application shows you how great a base sculpt is, but might be completely ruined and hidden by a less-than-sterling paint application.
      Unfortunately for it to look like this from the factory would make it a lot more expensive... although GR Toys (As we saw in the Carcharodontosaurus might actually start to push the envelope in that direction)
      I did think however that at least the whitish spikes could have been replicated to some degree on the actual model, and was really disappointed none of that remained in the production model.

    What an excellent repaint! I haven't bought the borealopelta yet, this video has inspired me to try and see if I can get someone over here to repaint mine for me when I get it

      Yes, I consider myself lucky to have learnt of Jay Carriere, and to have some of his work. He's the very first independent artist I saved up for to have his work, and I hope to get more from him in future! If you're near Canada, check him out!

    this beautiful repainting enhances even more the details of one of the most beautiful PNSO figures.
    Great job!

      Exactly! I was already happy with the sculpt, but with this repaint I noticed details I never even realised were there! Check out Gex's other work on his social media. If I can afford it one day I may ask for a custom ceratopsian!

    Gex has done an amazing paint that brings an already brilliant figure to a new level!

      Absolutely! A meticulous paint application is like a sculptor chipping away at a rock to reveal the beautiful statue that was already underneath, and in this case that rock is a lacklustre paint application!

    I do prefer Gex P repaint more,but I still like both of them equally,and this was a great review on his repaint

      Definitely there is no question. Gex gave an intricate sculpt a matching and worthy paint application. The result is obvious!

    Hex did a great job!
    I’ve done repaints on tragically rendered model kits and figures in the past and can really appreciate the improvement made on your PNSO figure.
    There are a small handful of their figures that would benefit from “aftermarket” attention.
    But, they’re not alone Rebor, Nanmu and even other production companies have provided less than stellar paint jobs, some being quite horrific.
    There is a time for “corrections” without diluting collectibility.
    I have put off purchasing certain figures due to incompatibility with a close 1/35 standard ( I actually prefer much larger scale figures but seem to have settled into 1/35 scale) as well as what a number of reviews show to be substandard paint applications.
    I’m handy with a brush, though.
    Might have to challenge myself by picking up some of these duds.
    As always, love your reviews.

      Thank you very much for your support!
      The fact that you can do your own repaints is definitely a boon to both the wallet and the collection satisfaction department. I can think of hardly a model in my collection that could not use some improvement. Even something minor, like proper colouring of teeth, fixing bleeding oral margins, correcting cross-eyed dinosaurs would immediately elevate any one of them. Obviously it would cost too much for me to get everything repainted, so I have to pick and choose, and the PNSO Ankylosaurus and Borealopelta, both their best represenative of each family.
      I've had to adapt to 1:35 too, but from a different direction than yours. I preferred the 1:40 scale since I liked being able to see the wide variety of sizes, but had to come round to admitting at that scale I will never have very detailed models of smaller species.

    Kayakasaurus did a diorama with a borealopelta. It’s pretty cool looking and the colors are pretty nice.

      He's definitely fantastic! In fairness, this _was_ the official PNSO release image colours, though of course sadly the prototype didn't carry through to the actual model to the same degree PNSOs today do.

    That's one fine paint job, its got a redwood vibe to it! I've been tempted to get a Borealopelta for review, but unfortunately its doesn't feature in any animated media so I'm waiting for PNSO to do an Edmontonia.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      Edmontonia is one example why we shouldn't get excited over very single piece of prehistoric artwork PNSO releases lol! That image has been out even last year, and still neither hide nor hair of it. I am still hoping though... Edmontonia is going to look so impressive with those shoulders and I'm especially excited to see models of articulated (or almost fully-articulated) genera!

    The repaint is beautiful! The artist did a great job!
    I have an old zebra figure that I would love to get repainted as an accurate quagga some day. I don't know where I could get it repainted though :(

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      I'm still waiting for a CollectA zebra to come in! I expect I would have to get it repainted. Most stripey mammals I've gotten don't have a natural look to them. Can't complain for CollectA's sculpting and price of course!

    • @horse14t

      @@DinosDragons Is it the Grevy?
      I love the sculpt of the Grevy a lot! I love that it's not just a repainted plains zebra!
      My only real complaint about it (other than the legs :( ) is that the rump stripes are on the wrong angle and shouldn't be pointing straight down.
      If I had to be _really_ nitpicky though; the ventral (belly) stripe should attach to the stripes on the chest and the body stripes should detach from the dorsal stripe about mid way on the torso but not have too big of a gap. And of coarse a lot more white stripes between the black stripes on the mid section. On my model there's only two and they're barely noticeable :(
      I wouldn't mind getting a second one and having it repainted to be more accurate... Maybe a third one too for a colour variant :P

    The repaint looks absolutely awesome, but I still kinda like the colour uniformity of the original. Wasn't the reddish brown colour deduced from the fossil itself? I think the original represents that well.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому

      It was presumed to be a kind of rust red but that is in contention. You can read more about it here.
      www.science.org/content/article/did-big-dino-use-camouflage-hide-predators
      That said, there is no definite shade of red so either one could be the same. The difference between the repaint and the original is the complexity of colour infused into the red, with a richness that was completely absent in the original. Generally when you have models painted in a single shade of colour, it can come across as plasticky, and that is what you see in the original, especially the scutes in the cervical rings.
      That said, if you prefer the original, you at least get to save on the money for a repaint 😁
