How do figure that… he’s had an incredibly successful career since the 70’s and is still popular today is incredibly rich and well respect….. so how do you figure he is underrated… I hate when people make that stupid cliche comment… guess they think it’s hip or cool.
He certainly changed his mind about bass-slapping when he got to Power Station and Notorious. He probably just gained a deeper understanding of the technique from Bernard Edwards. His hero. ❤️
He's talking about the pros and cons of using a _plectrum_ here. He doesn't like the clicking 'percussive' sound that goes with using one. JT doesn't mention slap -bass in this interview.
My fave bass player always! So underrated! And so sexy. I went to one of their concerts and it was in a “small” park and my friend and I were at the front, right on the gate first row and right in front of him, while people were pushing, I never cared as he kept winking his eye to me, omg I spent the whole night melted that my friend had to picked me up from the grass with a spatula hahaha
To saladcat: John Taylor is the reason I became a bass player (much like Nick Rhodes and Gary Numan are the reason I bought my first synth). JT is quite easily one of the most underrated bassists ever...
JT and Macca were the both pretty boys of their bands, but boy can they play bass. How many people were inspired to pick up and play because of those two? Lots and lots
To silence the nay-sayers, look up waiting for the night boat at the Old Grey Whistle Test, thats all John Taylor. His bass lines mezmerizes you and his riffs are fantastic. If you don't believe me, look up Duran Duran at the Old Grey Whistle Test.
Me too! But alas I think that's the extent of JT's appearance in the segment, which is mostly other bass players: m.facebook.com/BBCArchive/videos/776034019402701/
Planet Earth is the first DD bassline i've ever picked up and played as it's the first DD bassline that made me take notice of their bass player. Incidentally it was the rhythm of it that attracted me to it. I've always played with a pick but didn't think he did on that. He's written far more complex basslines but it's probably still my favorite. It could be though because I also think it's their best song. What he says about the pick is actually why I use one. I DO want the percussive sound.
I agree with John that finger bass sounds better. But there are some songs where pick is better. John Taylor is a very good bass player. He’s not Victor Wooten nor Jeff Berlin but I like to listen Johns songs a lot better 👍🏻
My understanding is that John and Bernard Edwards both play on PS. There's a video on UA-cam where they are both playing on "Get It On (Bang A Gong), although yes, Bernard is playing in the forefront. During the majority of the recording of the first PS album, it is very possible John had to have "help" with either a) the kind of funk he hadn't attempted previously, b) he was very high/drunk, and c) for the second PS album, he was not exactly in the "band" mindset at the time, had a lot of personal things going on, and if you note, he also left Duran Duran at about that time as well, if not before the PS II. I've seen him live. He's quite good, and of course, there's the other DD albums and his solo work. Some people play their best at certain times, and sometimes, they don't. From what I've read and seen, he doesn't consider himself a virtuoso by any means, so there's that too. As a music listener,I enjoy what I hear from him. *Shrug*
The Aria Pro II's were hot...the Philip Kubicki EXF4 he traded up to in time for the Live Aid/Power Station tour was light years better, though...simply the best bass guitar ever built, bar none.
Being a bass player is more then how complex and hard you can make your bassline be. I think that by unidimensional you might mean his basslines all kinda really similar and use the same "patterns". It is kinda true from having bothered to pick up half a dozen of them myself. Then again the same can be said if a LOT of bass players. Some things as a musician become kind of your signature. He's popular cause the band is and his basslines stick out, even for people who don't notice such things.
There were a few Bassists on the Powerstation records, John was one of three and Guy Pratt was another, from memory Bernard Edwards also played on soem tracks and almost certainly played the more complex stuff.
A lovely SB1000, shame he got rid of the older ones, they go for a grand a piece these days! Aria owe this guy big time he single handedly sold these beautiful basses...
Remember Rockschool so well. I wonder what happened to the presenters who were all excellent musicians. Anybody care to shed some light on where they are now please?
Having recently read the session bass player Guy Pratts book - he lifts the lid on some of Johns playing on the Powerstation project. He states that he basically had to teach John the bass lines to some of the songs... mmm interesting.
He's among the very best of bass players. I'm not saying this as a DD fan, I'm saying it as a funk bass player. Please try playing the bassline to Rio then come back.
wow - hes ihe top 10 bass players in the last 50 years in the music industry, and not many in the know would disagree. Yes he looks good, but hes rather special on a bass. You the lenght of those fingers and arms? hes born to flick a bass. Jeesus H Christ. Listen to some early duran duran stuff and you will hear muscianiship.
he is SO handsome
He's a very underrated bass player. Just listen to anything by DD.
Not bad considering he is a guitarist.
How do figure that… he’s had an incredibly successful career since the 70’s and is still popular today is incredibly rich and well respect….. so how do you figure he is underrated… I hate when people make that stupid cliche comment… guess they think it’s hip or cool.
PLAY THE F*CKING BASS JOHN!
I simply adore him

@@xerilaun he winks at people in the crowd a lot, I've heard.
@@sarahandceciliabohman8655 Ohhh he's a flirt then. Gawd I'd just die if he flirted with me +_+
John Taylor is Divine
balinesa 😍😍😍😍😍👍❤
To saladcat: John Taylor is the reason I became a bass player (much like Nick Rhodes and Gary Numan are the reason I bought my first synth). JT is quite easily one of the most underrated bassists ever...
Real prince is John Taylor
Dude, listen to the bass track from Rio.
Still not a great bass player?
English people speak so elegantly. John is a cool guy!

Jhon Taylor Men beautiful 😍🇧🇷
He's gorgeous and talented! 😍❤️

Best song forever, Planet Earth, his bass skills makes him one of a kind😍😍
He is a great player amd such a unique sound.
JT and Macca were the both pretty boys of their bands, but boy can they play bass. How many people were inspired to pick up and play because of those two? Lots and lots
i always think ab this
Sting and Alex James of Blur are two other examples of the beautiful bass innovator. Seems to be a British rock thing 😂
yeah...man, that was a tease!!...i totally want to see more of John teaching some bass technique--he rules.
To silence the nay-sayers, look up waiting for the night boat at the Old Grey Whistle Test, thats all John Taylor. His bass lines mezmerizes you and his riffs are fantastic. If you don't believe me, look up Duran Duran at the Old Grey Whistle Test.
I dunno Darren, should I look up Waiting for the Night Boat at the Old Grey Whistle Test...
I would like to have seen more of it...the whole video

John Taylor adalah yang sebenarnya menggendong Duran Duran.
Salam damai dari fans Indonesia

Bernard Edwards is the Jedi master of the bass and John Taylor is his Padawan
The Aria Pro II's were hot...the Philip Kubicki EXF4 he traded up to in time for the Live Aid/Power Station tour was light years better, though...simply the best bass guitar ever built, bar none.
I actually went out and bought a bass 2 days ago just to learn Duran Duran, but now I know lots more!
キャァ キャァ😆💕。
I don't know why people are thinking he is underrated. I believe most people know he's awesome. And Plectrums have their place.
Hey John where did you pick you all those fabulous bass “tricks” and techniques?
Bernard Edwards maybe??

great video, i always wanted to see him talking about playing bass and that. really, thanks a lot
How can you get tone like that? It sounds so tight and neat!
Search " Rockschool - Series 1 - Ep.3 - Techniques (Part 2 of 3) " for the whole episode, but there's no additional footage of J.T.
I loved this show! I even bought the book!
John Taylor scatena il pandemonio di commenti! In senso positivo, del resto!😊

💜

guy pratt played on the tour for ps second album because at that time john went into rehab

A lovely SB1000, shame he got rid of the older ones, they go for a grand a piece these days!
Aria owe this guy big time he single handedly sold these beautiful basses...
Agreed. Aria pro 2 right? Maudsley from Flock of Birds sold his on ebay..
That Aria2.... the 80's Bass.. well that and that Steinberger
Remember Rockschool so well. I wonder what happened to the presenters who were all excellent musicians. Anybody care to shed some light on where they are now please?
Did Guy Pratts write The Power Station bass lines? Did John write them but have difficulty playing them? Who actually played on the record? Thanks!
I taped this on rerun, must have been in '88. Oh I so wanted to be like him.
i actually own the john taylor edition of the aria pro II SB 1000 bass...i wanted that bass since i was a kid..and now that i have it its a keeper
he played an aria SB 1000 bass "pictured in this vid"
he was one of the reasons i picked up thebass
Like your name to start off!!!
I own a Epiphone EB-3 BUT the love of my life is still my strusty Aria Pro II Laser Heritage!!!
Wow. I used to look that cool too.. Lol. But I did. Of the 1980s....
It would really be a let down to find out that John didn't play on Some Like It Hot.
Benjamin Orr of the Cars used a pick with his bass. I guess he was not a snob.
to me they are even though they get intense.
I learned that too. :P XD Bass is relaxing for me
Yes, you need to expand your horizons.
I did the same years ago! First song I learned was "The Reflex."
Rio
what about cliff burton?.....
💋💋
And Carol Kaye?
...
my hair looks exactly like that!
Not anymore, gramps.
Great bass player but, what's the point of this video. He likes finger playing rather than using a pick......mmmkay.
@BMoseleyINC They are all pop fans is all.No bassplayers are serious about their John Taylor studies.
Having recently read the session bass player Guy Pratts book - he lifts the lid on some of Johns playing on the Powerstation project. He states that he basically had to teach John the bass lines to some of the songs... mmm interesting.
I love John's playing but there was so little here that it was really useless to post this.
Xcorgi I dunno, it answered my question: Does John play with a pick? No, except on Planet Earth.
john plays with a pick for some part in hold back the rain.
Well.. He's cool, handsome, rich, famous, but definitely not a great bass player..
He's among the very best of bass players. I'm not saying this as a DD fan, I'm saying it as a funk bass player. Please try playing the bassline to Rio then come back.
Life In 1984 Not just play the bass line from Rio, write it.

Fuckin' right! Straight up finger rythms, babe! I learned from the best man here! I can never play with a pick, well, hardly!
@BMoseleyINC
you have got to be kidding! ever try playing New Religion? Why are you even watching this if ya don't like him.
