Would have been interesting (and informative) to see what happened if the shafts were switched on the Callaway Drivers. Since the difference in distance was most likely due to the difference in spin rates, it would have been great to see how much the shaft impacted that.
Alot of LPGA players have used the Epic and still do especially the fairway woods. £500 for 5 yards is a waste of money
Just got fitted with the ai smoke max after 14 years with my old driver. I've lost 1 ball in 3 rounds with it. Forgiveness is almost more important than distance but I hit it further as well. I get what Matt is saying though
I have the Epic speed driver, and yes it is straight, but it took me time to get the correct flex, torque and length. Love the sound.
Hey Matt,
100% on board with getting fit, and using money more on lessons than on new equipment.
However, your initial test of the Epic vs the Ai Smoke doesn’t seem to be looking at the right things. Yes, the newer club went a few yards further, but the more important thing is how far off line on your mishits are those balls?
We know distance is lost on off center hits, and the balls spin more or less depending on where you hit them on the face. The newer technology isn’t geared so much about a hotter face and more distance but more about forgiveness on off center strikes.
Please redo your tests and another video on that since most golfers do NOT hit center on every shot 😬
Spot on mate
Finally got fitted and wound up with a completely different one than I would have thought. I ended up with a Ping 430 max with a 35g senior flex but the regular 28g weight. I added 20 yrds and incredible consistency down the fairway. My misses are still in play and I have much more confidence when I set up in the tee box. I actually saved money with the fitting over the driver I was going to buy off the rack!
I was pretty happy with my old driver (Rogue ST Max) after tweaking it over the last two years. But after trying the Ping G430 10k and seeing it hitting very consistently 25 yards longer carry and not suffering any dispersion issues, I purchased it. At 74 years old, might be the last driver I buy. Still short compared to many younger guys at 250 carry but I’m in the middle of the fairway, as I was with the Rogue, and I’m hitting more GIR and getting birdie opportunities. Well worth it to me.
I don't golf that much therefore - buying new clubs is way down my list of things I need. Lessons and playing more are much more important for me. The marketing of new clubs is enticing, but I know it won't help - my current clubs are far better than my game. Enjoy your videos - always learn something new.
Thanks for watching and a good attitude towards your game 🤙🤙
I was fitted for my cobra smashy bashy stick at American golf. And it works quite well thank you.
I ended up getting fit for my driver last year, I added about 25 yards and am way more consistent with it. I was spinning my old driver way to much, going for a lower spinning model with an Extra-Stiff Heavier Shaft over the regular stiff made a huge difference. I would recommend getting fit to anyone looking at a new driver. I ended up getting reimbursed for the fitting, because I bought a new driver anyways!
Nice work! Glad to here it's workingb
No wife no kids = new equipment every year 🥊
And the same lousy results?
Should probably think about where the existing equipment is going wrong both upstairs and downstairs first. I didn't know you could replace this every year 😜
Yeah might need to just spend that money on lessons haha
I thought even the manufacturers are saying that you wont get extra distance with the new drivers, itd all about getting better dispersion and less fall off from the miss hits
I just bought a 2017 Epic Sub-Zero, love it. Saved my money to buy a new sand wedge instead.
Just bought an Epic Max and it’s awesome
I still adore my Epic Speed driver. Had an extensive fitting at a well-known local retailer, and the best outcome was a new shaft in my Epic Speed, produced near identical results to the £850 Titleist head & shaft combo on offer
Fitted Mizuno even sounds better
I got fit for a Driver, didn’t work out for me. It was a Max drivers and had draw bias and made me hit it lefter. Change to an LS driver, now hit fades. Very similar shafts in both
Problem is I am definitely not willing to spend £500 on a driver. But finding somewhere that has an older driver in stock is impossible. Golfbidfer yes but even them are scratched up
I bought my ST-Z 230 in December off the rack, after learning from my iron fitter 5 months earlier that the shaft in my old gamer was fine for me (he measured it to see if he could tempt me into getting fitted for a new head). The ST-Z came with a very similar shaft spec, and since my gamer was 9 years old, I thought it was worth the gamble, and I am glad to say I was right.
Reason is simple, one you didn't mention: cost. In my experience, Fitters never have good price deals, even (like in my case) you actually pay them separately for a fitting session. Drivers are crazy expensive these days, so when I can get a current model at 299 EUR, it is very hard to resist.
One point you make is valid though. Although with the first swings the new driver went straighter, the distance improvements came only after some swing changes/lessons/drills
I replaced my driver earlier this year, I was using my dads old driver, the Callaway X460 from 2006. It was a great driver and I managed to get my handicap down to 5 with it. Unfortunately over the holidays I was playing a round with some friends who a just learning to play golf. And they hit the ground before the ball and snapped the shaft. And because then club is 18 years old the price to have it reshafted was 4 times the price of the head. So I ended up buying the Callaway Paradym driver just before the new Ai Smoke was released. I was fitted but I was finding it really hard keep the ball in the air and everything was leaking right.
My Dad and I were having a conversation with an older gentleman on the driving range and he mentioned that when he tried the Paradym he also noticed it wouldn’t turn over. So I decided I’ll adjust the loft sleeve to loft it up and make it abit more upright. It made an immediate impact, all of sudden it was launching in the window I like and it was predictable, I could shape it left or right and it is now a long fairway finding machine.
Key word is think, all the advertising of golf clubs is made to make you think it is better, yes every year is better than the last, but that better could be 2 yards of distance or maybe 3 yards less dispersion. Before you pay $600 or more for a new driver you can try different shafts (so easy to change shafts these days) after trying about 15 shafts at a fitting I was fitted with a shaft that only cost $125 on my 4 year old Callaway and added 12 yards at the fitting.
Have a Epic Max LS, worked on my swing and then did a retro fit getting a different shaft in -> Result: + 30 yards of average distance!
Still using the Epic Speed, but it's married to my favorite shaft.
I play the Epic Speed and I honestly believe it's one of the best drivers callaway has ever made and it looks better at address than the newer drivers. I swapped out the stock shaft for a Hzrdus smoke 70g and it's a low spin monster
In February I got fit for the new Callaway Ai Smoke, it was a long fitting I hit many brands and shafts etc including my old Ping G425.. I picked up 6mph ball speed over the second best with this driver/shaft combo.. after playing it for 2 months I can honestly say I am hitting it farther (am a member at a local course so know from many rounds where I usually hit driver) but even more so on those heel/toe hits I lose very little, so to me the new driver is well worth it.
Very nice!
Matt what would you recomend for a high handicapper (21) with a slower swing speed ? On a limited budget Im using a Wilson D9 fixed at 13 degrees and getting around just over 200 yards
Personally, buying new clubs that I don't actually need gets me out to the range a lot more than I would normally. Also I don't generally buy a new club and expect to see better results straight away. I go into it thinking "I'm going to need to learn how to swing this thing" and just trust that it's better equipment than what I was using before.
I was fitted for my current bag except for my wedges and putter.
I had my fist fitting last week, it was really good and I bought the AIsmoke
Couldn't agree with you more Matt, I loved my SIM2 and it would still be in the bag accept for the fact that the face cracked at the driving range last year and I was disappointed with TAYLORMADE as they were my favorite club manufacturer and I moved to the Wilson Dynapower which won't be getting replaced as long as it holds together.
For me I had an Epic and I could not control it. My drivers were all over the place. I now have a Paradym, and you are right it is not a lot longer, but I hit twice as many fairways. For me there was a huge difference. I had a fitting at a big box store for both drivers. However, I was not willing to spend an extra $350.00 for a shaft.
April 2024 I've just switched back to my old Callaway XR Pro 2015 in 9deg, from a 2022 Epic Speed TD 9deg.....same shaft. Forget about LM numbers, on my home course I'm hitting it further and straighter, leaving me shorter irons into the green. So much of the tech being promoted is simply a load of marketing 'hype & tripe' to keep sales going year on year, where as the average golfer themselves are the real source of inconsistency not the club.
Yea thanks Matt. I feel so much better after spending a ton 😏
But seriously. Appreciate the wisdom
I know what yr saying Matt but I’ve just bought the new mizuno st max yes I’ve lost distance but I hardly miss a faraway but I was fitted
Where do you stand on playing with a shorter driver Matt? done any tests? thinking of taking an inch and a half off mine if it might give me more control....
It wasn't the driver it was the spin numbers that made the difference!!!
but did you not have a upgraded shaft in the old driver that is very good
Shaft profile and club swing weight are the 2 most important factors affecting golf club performance, period. Even with those 2 factors correct, if you have a skanky swing you will hit skanky shots - no amount of money will miraculously transform you into a great ball striker. Equipment companies and fitters don't want you to know this because they're in business to sell clubs and make money - but if what you currently have works for you the majority of the time, DON'T SCREW WITH IT.
So after buying and requiring it to be changed will your pro do alterations required.
My old club is a 2018 Tour Edge EXS Pro. 420cc, low spin gamers club. My "new" club plan is a used Paradym. Pretty sure that's going to help me hit ALOT more fairways lol.
Good bargain I bet 👍👍
Stock vs custom test is bollocks.
Why don't you set the stock driver to 9.5 degree like the custom?
And use a stock club with a stock 'stiff' shaft at your speed.
Redo the test numbers and see..
I've used a ping g400 max stock shaft for years. It's as long and straight as any £500 plus driver as on the market now. Believe me, I've tried them all,
Says the man who changes his driver every 3 months 😂
Every 3 videos more like 😮
🤫😉
If you had the sponsorships and money I bet you would too 😉😉🤣🤣 I know I would lol
@@jephfandingo1438 yeah maybe but if I was chopping and changing, I hopefully wouldn’t be telling other people not to. 🤷♂️
He gets em for free.. why wouldn't you 😅
He says a 5-6 year old driver. The Epic came out in 2021 so he’s wrong right off the bat. You’d also have to get individually get fit for both drivers to see if a change is needed.
You compared the lowest spinning Triple Diamond to a mid-spinning Epic Speed driver, a more fair comparison would be to the Epic Max LS from same year but lower spinning than the SPEED and a better match up against the TD. The LS is a few yards longer than the Speed model, I’ve tested the Max, Speed, and LS and the LS would be an equal match to the TD for the much less than the TD. People are mesmerized by the new drivers and the exaggerated claims, I’ve always said the drivers from 2017 and on with the correct shafts and lofts are just as good as the new overpriced stuff. You just need to try and get it through peoples heads to see that. The latest is not necessarily the greatest. Great video! I’m glad that you’re putting this out there for people to see.
Mid to high hcp golfers I find should focus on short game short game short game. Put the driver away & practice 150 yards in.
Shaft fitting is king
If you hit the driver in/closer to the sweet spot, it's going to go far. Due to R&A and USGA limits on COR-- the new drivers are better on mishits than older clubs.
Different shafts? Different weights? Different lengths?
I use a 2016 callaway X driver that I bought off ebay for £120. Would never pay £500 for 1 item except perhaps an electric trolly.
I’ve never found more that 5 yards difference in a fitter driver and one off the rack Once you’ve been fitted I’ve found that if I stay in the same range shaft etc it doesn’t change. Older you get a lighter shaft weight grams and weaken flex. Isn’t that hard
“You’re is short for “you are”. Example1: you’re quite good at golf. Example2: your golf shot was good.
??? What does that have to do with anything?
Run, its the grammar police!.@stanmans
I love the comments on the people telling Matt 'obviously the fit driver will be better, you're doing it wrong' while completely missing the point of the video.... Erm... Get fit VS buying a stock new one... The results are in the video 😂😂😂
I recently bought the Callaway Epic Speed to replace my Mavrik Max and I am seeing increases in distance and accuracy. I'm a solid 10 yards longer with this club. It is especially good on off-center hits, where I'm not seeing the drop in distance as I did with the Mavrik. I played early this morning and hit a shot that was struck low off the heal and I got the exact same yardage I did with a well-struck ball with the Mavrik. I haven't bought a new driver in many years. I just don't see the point in paying 3 or 4x more for a new driver over a good used one. The gains just aren't typically there to justify the extra cost.
I play the Epic Speed too and see the same thing: as long as you hit it somewhere on the face, you'll get a useful result. It's an awesome driver and the last club in the bag I'd want to replace.
@@kooijbas I'm starting to fall in love with this club. I hit a drive of 281 yards today (downwind, hehe) but had one of over 240 into that same wind on a later hole. I was not getting distance like that with my Mavrik. Those are each terrific distances for an older bloke like myself (66). I have a SkyTrak and I'm noticing that I'm getting much less backspin with this driver/shaft (2400 rpm +/-) compared to what I was averaging with the Mavrik (3600+ rpm). This is giving me much better roll out. The Mavrik I had was regular shaft stiffness, this new Epic Speed is stiff.
@@leemzgoogle917 You never know. I bought a Cobra Speed zone Xtreme and everyone was raving about that one. I banana sliced over half my drives to the next hole. Never had that problem with my previous or current Callaway. Maybe these just suit our swings.
@@kooijbas Agreed. I'd been fitted for driver twice in the past. Both from extremely well-known professional golf shops, and when I took that driver out of the studio and onto the course, I couldn't hit either one of them at all. One was a Callaway and the other was a Taylor Made. I've had better luck just experimenting on my own.
Spin is measured in rpm not yards. I think you knew that 😎
Not really a fair comparison though, same head, same flex and loft and then let’s see the difference between the 2. I mean I general someone who is needs an x-flex has some idea about golf and would not but off the rack a r flex with an 11 degree head🤷♂️
3200 yards of spin, holy shit that's quite a lot Mat 😂😂
I didn’t buy the wrong driver, I purchased the driver i liked best in my fitting, tried all the new available drivers and was very happy with my AiSmoke, stiff shaft 9 degree set at 8, delivers 2300 spin and 250+ yards of carry age 67. Now, waste of money? Depends if you can afford it, i still operate my own business, ive worked hard all my life. So definitely wont be told by anyone i am wasting my money, it’s my money, tax paid, if a new club gives me some enjoyment, let it be.
I don't think the video was intended to cause such offence 🤦🏻♂️
probably shaft issues more likely
I quit my office job 16 months ago and now work in a pro shop with an extremely good fitting pro. 100% get fitted, but talk to other golfers and find out who has a good reputation. There are a lot of cowboys out there. Find someone that knows what they're doing!
I’ll stick with my F8 after watching this 👍
"A driver that's 5 or 6 years old" ... and the caption says Epic 2021?! This is 2024, right?
I never got fitted. Keep saying that I will. Hahaha
This would have been a great video...... in January.
And again later in the year
Isn't 2021 only 3 years ago?
Day 61 the ER5 can I have it
Ill buy what driver i want not someone who does not know my game
My G425 max is good enough.
I only wish I could afford a new driver 😂
You're 😊
The speed is from 2021
You cranked it to 11.5 🤦♂️
If it ain't broke don't fix it imo!
2021 was not 5 or 6 years ago😂
Dude: You’re*
Hey look, it's my old driver and my new driver... crap.
I absolutely hate callaway drivers.
You’re using the wrong your. You have to know the difference between knowing your sh*t and knowing you’re sh*t.
With that thumbnail I wish I could subscribe twice!!!
i think 'fitting' is gigantically overated (normally). Most average golfers, weekend whackers...have no idea what causes what, driver working good one day-bad the next, etc etc. Hitting in a cramped booth, probably not your normal shoes, using some cheapo ball (unless you bring your own), tee height not your norm, the stress of a booth/launch monitor, spectators, hitting one club/shaft 3-5 times-trying another....absolutely horrible for 'fitting', just terrible. Now you wasted at least $100.00 on a fitting with false confidence until the 1st/2nd/3rd time out and have it all fall to crap and now you resent buying it and spending money on the fitting. I'm pro fitting...but it has to be done in the correct setting and the golfer needs to have an established swing/fundamentals-otherwise you're just throwing money away. Just my oppinion, what do you all think?
Hmm £150 per yard. Should have paid more attention in economics class at school Matt. BTW pass on my best regards to your dad.
I generally like Matt's videos. This one, however, is laughable. So, you take a 9.5° driver, turn it up to 11° and say how it does not hit as far and has more spin than the 9.5° driver that was fit to you. Well, duh. Why didn't you compare both drivers at 9.5° and show us what advantages the "fitting" has then? From other videos I've seen there is very little difference in the performance of a driver with same brand and model of shaft but only varying in the flex. Rick Shiels does a video like that using four different Mitsubishi shafts. Distance was nearly identical. Dispersion was somewhat of an issue with the A flex shaft, but not enough to be unplayable. The differences were mostly in the feel, not the performance. In other videos, the head (draw biased or not, etc) makes more of a difference than the shaft.
Did he just say, "3200 'yards' of spin."? And I immediately stopped the video, and hit the dislike button as soon as I saw that he was using 2 different shafts. You can't have a fair comparison unless you use the same shaft. And this guy wants to put out content like this and influence potential customers into not purchasing products? This video is trash.
'you're' not 'your' FFS man basic grammar !
Callaway doesn't allow anyone to compare vs the Epic Max LS either because that one is way longer than the newer clubs.
Taylormade qi10.max is a fairway finder
