Matt this is a great drill and should be the very first lesson in golf, the set up takeaway and follow through is the main aspect to hitting the ball correctly finishing in the right position, had I'd been taught this at the beginning it would have made my game much better. Great lesson matt
Just found you Matt and thanks for a great drill. I had been playing "guys trip golf" for years but finally took it up "seriously" a couple years ago when my wife got hooked. IMO, the importance of moving towards the target is grossly underrepresented and this drill is a great reminder/tool. The other thing that this drill emphasizes is that the club head path is not a circle like so many instructors describe. It is in fact closer to an oval with the long edge pointing towards the target. That oval is formed if/when our swing center moves forward as you demonstrate. While this might seem like a semantic point, I'd suggest that at least for one would be golfer who might obsess a bit about the biomechanics of sports, the classic "swing circle" language put the wrong image in play and increased my tendency to lift at the end of the swing, as it is the only way to trace an actual circle. However, the mental image of moving towards the target starting with your hips and knees, while tracing what is closer to an oval that points towards your target, is a much more accurate and natural way to swing ..at least to me. Thanks again and looking forward to exploring your other content. Cheers!
Timing my swing to my posture, target line and lie is all there is. The tee is flat, nothing else is. Takes about 50 years to figure it out for yourself and its always changing. Luv it.
Always great instruction Matt. I always find the start to the downswing the most tricky part, do I think of my hips nudging to the left, or the feeling of left hip going backwards, seems a lot of people debate this. I always find I strike the ball better when bumping to the left.
Ive noticed the exact feeling on most of my best hits .so when the game goes to crap as it usually does ill make that move to realign things. It eventually works out …never really did the 3 pump thing at range because i assumed it was my own lil fluke issue lol..will today though 👍🏼✌️
In the last two years of getting back into golf Now near the age of 55 Studying is a huge part in understanding the game of golf I had a Coach asking me what I am looking at in golf Answer Understanding What is their to understand Lots
Matt - thank you - thought we turned the left hip to start the downswing - have been pulling most shots left - now I know it is bump the left side - not turn the left side. Looking forward to getting on the course as soon as the rain stops lol. Cheers🏌⛳
My left knee is so sore, from finding this and using it. Never used that to start my downswing till now at 66. Moderation is required with the joints! Lol
I’ve played for a long time and started not hinging on purpose and hit better. Traditional grip also which seemed to help but not I’m just screwed totally. Sometimes I hit pure sometime I don’t, sometimes I chunk it sometimes I hit off the toe, heel pure etc. I’ve always been an athlete but I’ve went from 85- 90- 99 and it makes me want to quit altogether. Something I use to love im starting to hate. Feel unfixable
why does this not work for me? I shift my weight but I bottom out before contact so I either hit fat or thin, I bow my wrist which makes be hit looping shanks way to the right (the face is wide open).
Reasonable message ( pumping hips or moving hips to target ) but why the preceding 3.47 mins / secs of waffle . Is there an editor out there who might summarise these lessons and corner the golf video market ? R
Another reason why many people get short is because they overestimate the distance on their club. Following a lot of youtube golf i have discovered this to be the biggest problem.
I would expect the guy teaching the drill would have hit it correctly the first time. Didn't he start off saying if you "can't do this drill" you might as well just swing one handed and then proceeds to take 3 times to hit the correctly? And also explaining that it's really hard to do?

Genuinely great tip - tried it yesterday and struck the ball much more crisply - many thanks
Genius tweak! I'm off to the driving range to give it a go. Thanks.
Good stuff and keeping your left arm straight (righties) ensure a consistent hitting point too 👍
Thanks Matt, Always enjoy your content and find it very useful.

Yep it's a tricky old game!
Great tip. Looking forward to giving it a try
Hope you enjoy
Love all these tips had a trip to the range today and slowed down a lot and seen a massive improvement in my swing
Great to hear!

This is great video I feel like I needed this one bc my timing feels weird and never thought of how to fix it great vid matt
I’ll definitely give this drill a go. Thanks!
Okay. Have to hit like button after 5:16. Great stuff
Brilliant Matt loves these and the Driver one as well.
Thank you appreciate it hope they help
I tried it ! Great tip !

Thanks, had more impact from this than any other single drill before ! Way fewer duffs
Good go Matt, this actually completes the swing!
You know it
In the last two years of getting back into golf
Now near the age of 55
Studying is a huge part in understanding the game of golf
I had a Coach asking me what I am looking at in golf
Answer
Understanding
What is their to understand
Lots
I like this. Will help with timing. I'm single figure , so this is important to me. Many thanks
Great tip. Knew what I was doing wrong, but wasn't sure how to correct it. 😊
Love it, cheers
this is the drill that i need to start working on
Thanks Matt. Great tip. Cheers👍🏻
Love it, heading to the range tomorrow now :D
Thanks Matt I will use this drill to practice. I’ve been told that I wipp or stab at the ball. I often top or miss hit a ball.

Would you advise putting weight at 60 front 40 back with this drill ?
Top Notch advise!

Going to the range today, I will ty this.
Love it!!
Good tip

Off to the driving range to give this a try tomorrow :)
Wish I'd seen this before my round on Monday!
Well at least next round you will be ready to go!

'Hit irons EVERYTIME.' Content making is ruining you as a golf teacher, Matt.
The trick is not to have your head follow the forward motion of the pump. Then it becomes the "sway" and there's the fat shot.
Reasonable message ( pumping hips or moving hips to target ) but why the preceding 3.47 mins / secs of waffle . Is there an editor out there who might summarise these lessons and corner the golf video market ? R
Day 59 can I have it now?

Yep underpinning is massive
Thanks fir the tip.
Starting from the ground up, you say? Then why do some other pros say: start by dropping the hands/arms down.? Confusing all us hackers even more
Every institution video I’ve ever seen says your hips lead the way.
"Hit PERFECT Irons EVERYTIME" You should be coaching the PGA superstars being that they don't do that.
Or you were short because you picked the wrong club
I would expect the guy teaching the drill would have hit it correctly the first time. Didn't he start off saying if you "can't do this drill" you might as well just swing one handed and then proceeds to take 3 times to hit the correctly? And also explaining that it's really hard to do?
Way too much talking !!! Just show us
Too much talking
get to the point
Another indescribably confusing golf lesson. Too many of these, and you're bound to be a high handicapper for life!
