I have a problem with the whole "turbo runs on free energy" thought. Turbos create a significant exhaust restriction, the engine has to do extra work to force the exhaust through the turbo's exhaust housing as can be seen if you measure the amount of exhaust backpressure before the turbo.

You get *turbo lag* on high performance cars with larger turbos (sob they boost along at higher engine speed) but most model turbo cars such as Ford EcoBoost have almost zero noticeable turbo lag.
The turbos are modest in size and with modern tech they spool in no time and the engines are at max output at about 2500 RPM
For instance: from a dead stop acceleration a Ford F-150 3.5 V6 twin turbo EcoBoost will easily out accelerate any standard V8 truck.
    The lag isn't an issue.
And as Scott briefly mentioned, turbos operate on waste exhaust energy while superchargers take a bit of engine power to rotate them.
    Turbo all the way

To eliminate turbo lag what they could do is drive the turbocharger through a belt-driven input via an overrunning clutch. Initially, the engine drives the turbo compressor via a direct mechanical connection. This way the boost is immediate. Then, as the exhaust builds up, the turbine of the turbocharger begins to turn faster than the input from the engine and the turbine speeds up the compressor which disengages the clutch of the engine input.
