Scotty I have a 95 Nissan maxima 3.0l with the automatic transmission. I have serviced the trans fluid and filter but it seems like it's stuck in 3rd gear or something. It takes off slow but when it gets up to speed it takes off like a rocket but never changes out. My fluid level shows that its accurate. Any suggestions
Scotty Kilmer Question, I have a BMW e46 2003 and I need to change the oilpan casket, (I will do this myself) is there a easyer way to change it....because the dealer takes the engine out. Thank you, Greats from Holland (Europe)
I'm 21 I just I bought my first car 5 months ago. I didn't know a single thing so when it started acting up i would take it in but they never seem to fix the problem. So I started watching your videos. Turns out it was the MAF SENSOR. Even ford themselves missed it. After that I got tired of paying someone to fuk up my care when I can do it for free. Your video is really made it possible to fix my own car now I can't stop learning about vehicles. And everything around that thank you for your amazing knowledge and all the money your saving us.
My pops was a master mechanic and listening to you reminds me of all the stuff he used to teach me growing up, I appreciate the good news that you have in you videos man, keep up the good work, I hate I didn't know you were from Houston I would tried to find you just so I could shake your hand, good man, we need more people like you, keep up the good work bro.
Scotty you’re a lifesaver. My GMC through those same codes yesterday and was running poorly. Just swapped out my MAF a few minutes ago and she’s running good
Would have been curious if just cleaning tge MAF sensor would have resolved the problem as they can get grubby especially if the air filter isn't changed frequent e ough.
I like when you show the freeze frame and live data points. Most people seem to think that diagnosis only consists of retrieving codes. Great content, Scotty.
Just cleaned my air intake filter, but truck is still loosing power after five minutes of driving. Almost couldn't get home. Hopefully the MAF sensor is my issue.
I had a problem with my 1998 Toyota Sprinter, it use to take long to pick up when I press the gas pedal but I realized that the manifold had a leak. From I fix it the car as been running so good. Thank you Scott.
THANK THE LORD YOU POSTED THIS!!! I have a 2002 GMC Yukon XL with 226,000 miles and the truck just threw up both of those codes and the truck runs perfectly fine and the fuel pump was replaced at 200k for preventative maintenance and there was no vaccum leak so I couldn't it out but now hopefully replacing the MAF will help. Thanks!!!
Scotty, that deep dive into scanner codes, how to correctly process what they mean, and then how to follow through, makes this one of the best videos you've ever done. Thanks so much!
Great video Scotty!! I like when you share your trouble shooting thoughts while doing the repair. It gives us inside on how you determine the bad part. Thanks!!
Scotty, you are the smartest mechanic I have ever seen. I watch all of your vids and have learned so much from you. Please don't ever stop posting!!!!. BSP
My 1993 auto Sentra has 360k miles. Original everything but starter (5th replacement) and radiator (2nd). Came free with the wife. I'm keeping it forever and driving it when needed.
I had a problem with my diesel Jeep Wrangler in Australia. The connector for the MAF sensor had a hole where a wire would usually go on a petrol Wrangler. My Jeep only used 4 of the 5 wires and water would seep down into the plug. Everytime it rained, I would have to replace the sensor. The wrangler wouldn't start with out it. I fixed it by sealing around the plug with some elctrical silicone. Works great now.
By far the most common issue with this engine when lean codes are present are the intake gaskets and the quickest and sure way to test them is to spray carb cleaner around them with the engine running which results in a change of idle speed if a leak is present. Usually this occurs when the engine is cold because the gaskets are plastic/rubber. I've seen this many times with both sides leaking and sets lean codes. Easy fix: replace the gaskets. MAF sensor failure on this engine are not all that common. (retired ASE Master-GM service)
Mr. Goodwrench 👍 My first full time job was at a Chevy dealership in East Hartford CT. 4 years. Car Jockey, New Car Prep, Parts Driver and parts warehouse receiver/ stocker.
Hi. Just curious in your experience, is there a good way to test an O2 sensor? other than the check engine light. It seems like the O2 sensor has the final say in the fuel trim values with problems like this and would be harder to diagnose without a specific fault code?
@@wvadam O2 sensors can be tested by a quality multi meter/DVM. There are many videos on UA-cam that can help. However, from what I've seen most techs rely on their shop scan tool to do so.
Exactly the last problem of my car. Changed the air senzor and the car was reborn, man It's like I am driving a different car. Thanks for the tips Scotty!
I have a 2001 Audi A4 Quattro Avant 1.8T , about 75000 miles on the odometer. A had a lean condition error code for a year, on and off. Sometimes the check engine light came on , but only on the freeway! I replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the fuel injectors. It did not fix the problem. Finally I cleaned the mass air flow sensor..... And no more error code since then. :)
love this … i have a 2006 trailblazer ever since i bought i started having problems . bought it in 2006. then early 2007 the right wheel started leaking some type of oil front right tire. every year something went wrong . think i paid more in repairs than the purchase of the vehicle 31000
Had a ‘97 Thunderbird 4.6 V-8. At a somewhat advanced age it was running funny. The resistance wire in the MAS looked wrong. There was one replacement in the entire metro area and it was at a parts store, not at a dealer. It was about $15. Problem solved. But it seems parts get scarcer as the cars get older. Wiper linkage fell apart on another car. The only one in the metro area was at that same parts store. Whew!
These videos make me happy. That's why it's important to have a scan tool with live data monitoring, not just for reading codes. It'll make consumers happy and shady dealership/mechanics angry.
I have a 2004 3L Nissan patrol. I had a MAF go in it. And it had no power at all, went into limp mode wouldn’t rev over 2000rmp. New MAF, back to normal.
Legend, learn some thing new everyday,I don’t know how many times I have replaced the 02 sensors thinking they were fucked, only to have the same problem afterwards..it was obviously the maf sensor!thanks for sharing!
I've been diagnosing my MAF (short of reading waveforms). I just tried the intake gasket test with carb cleaner that you suggest in other vid. Someone else suggested a $20 unit on ebay, but I'm not buying Chinese (buy cheap, buy twice). I'm now going to do the highway speed test you mention, then order a Denso unit online. Glad to get confirmation that 'they just wear out.' At 180k on my Corolla, it may just be time.
You can run a 2.2 Chevy cobalt without a mass airflow sensor, it will start hard but once it’s running it’s fine, also I know because I’ve done it, ran mine in a demo derby took all that off and did good once warmed up
First Last makes me cry a little bit because we used to have a 06 yukon XL with 170K miles and it was such a good truck and it sounded exactly the same 😔
I just use MAF sensor cleaner, never replaced a MAF on any car I've ever had or maintained. I find LFT has more to do with sensors and STF has more to do with intake leaks or fuel delivery issues.
Whoever has the 1994. I got you if you need parts or advice. I've owned 7 and currently own 3 of these. Great cars. Cheap to maintain and slight easy to work on. Now you got GOLD if it's an SER with the 2.0 motor. A solid gold bar, if it's a 5 speed
Yeah... great idea Scotty, change parts with actually doing a proper diagnostic diagnosis... it could be dirt where all it needed was a good clean, it may have also been oxy sensors, wiring or anything else that the computer uses to work out the stoichiometry
My 05 Tahoe's engine made that exact whining noise and I searched for a vacuum leak and never found one. After seeing your video I'm seeing there wasn't one.
This is where the dealer has the big advantage with all of the baseline data. They can look up the exact air mass per second the MAF sensor should be reading at idle on their computer and know if the reading is wrong right away.
I have a B9 2007 Tribeca in great condition Great in the snow 188,000 miles on it had it for 11 years great condition however I see a lot of people who have gotten these wrecked and have broke on them AND mine has airbag recalls that can shoot metal scrapings??!?? Subaru never told me about this recall that happened back in 2016!!!!!! I’m pissed!!!!!
Love you Scotty, keep up the great work. Would be cool to see more 1996-2000 Honda Civic repair and instructional videos, Godbless you Scotty, Michael in England X
Mass airflow sensors don't wear out. They get dirty. There is a heated wire that air is directed over. The air cools the wire. So you can determine how much airflow by how much the wire has cooled. Get dirt on the wire and it insulates the wire and screws up the reading. Clean the wire and good as new. Also sometimes a bug gets stuck in the passage leading to the wire. The small hole at top of inlet. Remove bug, good to go.
Scotty, we love the channel! Question: 2003 Highlander v6 160k miles sometimes has issue of shifting into highest gear(overdrive?) in highway speeds so it will rev around 3500 rpm. Been able to quick fix it by pulling over, shutting car off, waiting 10-20 seconds, starting it up again. Alot of times doing that fixes the problem but it all seems very sporadic. What could possibly be causing this problem? Electrical failures? Transmission going out? Is it a common issue?
Some Fluid Film spray on the rubber parts that slide together will make it come apart easier the next time. Do not use silicone spray- if it gets to the oxygen sensors it can damage them.
A local mechanic. Was going to charge my father in law $1,000 to fix his Sierra Truck. I changed this part and the air filter and the engine light went off.
When checking a mass airflow sensor a resistance check is done with voltage meter on continuity if there continuity it’s holding electricity true a magnetic field then set to ohms in measure the resistance to a more approximate analysis
Two comments: 1. when I check under the hood, I clean out the leaves and branches. looking at the car in the video, I have the feeling that the person doesn't check under the hood very often. 2. I have an older Toyota than discussed in the video. When I changed from primarily highway driving to stop and go, one mile hops, the fluid went dirty after only 12,500 miles. Although it appears clean now, I will do another drain because it has been another 3 years and only about 8,000 miles. Looks can be deceiving. I change the oil every year regardless of the appearance.
Last video I watched Scotty was complaining about "unclipping the air filter housing" and "opening 2 screw" on a BMW ignition coil change. Funny how the tone changes
Almost three million Subs Scotty .!. Put Castrol transmax synthetic (which is not actually synthetic - Only Amsoil?) in my 2005 Lexus Rx 330, which was made in Ontario, Canada. I bought it at 245 000 kms (miles ?) for 7000k CAD (am I stoopid? Slightly?) - She runs real nice, seamless gear shifting - the OEM fluid (Type II IV- blah blah is it just a bunch of bull and is oil just oil? - are the additives really that special?). Where do you post proper questions? A live forum, I've read.. I went to Mr. Lube, which is a prominent 'Oil Changer' in Canada after buying a used car and now I'm scared after reading the owner's manual (Transmission fluid is the only fluid Toyota specifically says to use only OEM; you like Castrol eh Scotty?) .. I don't know whether to change the filter and refill what comes out with OEM or do the same process again with OEM (the machine they use? EXPLAIN it please, I can't find any real information on it? does it really change ALL of the transmission oil, makes sense in my mind if you pump out the old with the new - I paid for a dozen Litre (Quartz? :) bottles of oil I believe? To apparently change ALL the trans oil in my car :) I also did a 30$ engine flush what is that all about?! I'm learning the hard way over here on the West Coast
Had this problem on my H3 with 5.3L in it. It would only show symptoms when it was below 0 degrees Celcius and would start but want to stall. Changed both intake gaskets and prob solved.
I hate to say it, but Scotty describes a Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF), while holding a Mass Air Pressure sensor (MAP). The difference is, one -- the MAF -- was used in OBD-1, which was prior to the standardization of US cars and trucks in 1996. After 1996, ALL cars and trucks sold in the US had to have the same baseline standard, OBD-2. The major changes was going from MAF to MAP sensors, and adding a second oxygen sensor downwind from the catalytic converter (OBD-1 systems, prior to 1996, only have one oxygen sensor, usually in the exhaust manifold) -- which meant that cars and trucks could get higher mileage out of each tank of fuel, depending on engine speed, load, and air/fuel efficiency. Pressure sensors are used because a computer has an easier time adjusting for atmospheric pressure (14.7 lb. per square inch at sea level) for combustion purposes, while air flow, at higher elevations, is lower because the volume of air is smaller, though that volume of air could also be more dense, and therefore, at a higher elevation, a car could run richer as a result. A pressure reading, therefore, was used to enable the same air/fuel ratio, no matter the elevation, and therefore improve engine performance by mitigating rich running stemming from running at a higher elevation. Point here is, Scotty gets the kind of sensor wrong, and therefore the type of system wrong.
I removed the sensor from the air intake. Mine was held in with two screws. Each manufacturer probably uses a different design. Some cars don't have MAFs. CRC makes a spray specifically labeled as Mass Air Flow cleaner. The sensor is sensitive enough that I would only use something specifically labeled for the MAF I sprayed the cleaner on the components let it sit for about 20-30 seconds and then repeat a few times until the sensor was clean.

6 years ago I got an error for the mass airflow sensor on my 2003 Silverado. I cleaned it and haven't seen the error again.
Great video! I think his explanation was very well done and I learned quite a bit watching it. Thanks Scotty!
This guy is freakin great, very knowledgeable. Thanks Scotty.
Love those easy fixes like a MAF or 02 sensor. Easy peasy
Lemon squeezy
Haha yeh great fun on the front wheel drive V6🙄
@@RJ-jh9fs nah, it's the rear bank that's hell on a fwd v6
Or a CVT transmission.
@@doices9786 yep
Practice using arm/hand movements only for limited emphasis will make Scotty's videos better.
Some Fluid Film spray on the rubber parts that slide together will make it come apart easier the next time. Do not use silicone spray- if it gets to the oxygen sensors it can damage them.
Love your automotive knowledge
other peoples videos 2 years ago scotty; s videos 2 hours ago. most hard working youtuber
I love watching these video because it teach u or me how to fix a car or your car?truck
Just wondering why you didn't try cleaning the MAF before replacement?
Good tip on the air filter.
The best mechanic
Air flow is very important to run engine smooth. Nice video Scotty.
This Chevy Tahoe is in good shape for an 18 year old car.
They are the last great GM truck mine has 304k great machine.
@@ruthlessreid9172 the Tahoe looks well taken care of as well.
Reid Plyler which years are best?
Dillon Hamrick 99-2006 best gen
The Old Chevy SUVs and Trucks r the only well built GM products that last over 150,000 miles unlike their newer piles of junk
To apparently change ALL the trans oil in my car :)
I also did a 30$ engine flush what is that all about?!
I'm learning the hard way over here on the West Coast
Had this problem on my H3 with 5.3L in it. It would only show symptoms when it was below 0 degrees Celcius and would start but want to stall. Changed both intake gaskets and prob solved.
Excellent Scotty! My 1994 4L has the exact same issue 👍
I cleaned the MAF on my 02 4Runner after 180K miles. Made a big difference. Why not try cleaning the MAF first?
How do you clean the MAF sensor?
I removed the sensor from the air intake. Mine was held in with two screws. Each manufacturer probably uses a different design. Some cars don't have MAFs.
CRC makes a spray specifically labeled as Mass Air Flow cleaner. The sensor is sensitive enough that I would only use something specifically labeled for the MAF
I sprayed the cleaner on the components let it sit for about 20-30 seconds and then repeat a few times until the sensor was clean.
Keep it up 👍🏽
