How to Fix / Repair the Hook Timing on a Sewing Machine

  • This video demonstrates how to fix / adjust / repair the timing of the hook on a sewing machine. If the thread from your needle isn't getting caught by the hook that rotates around, this video explains what to adjust to fix that. Requires some very basic tools and takes 15-30 minutes - maybe less.
Thanks to Nigel Chapman for this helpful comment about the timing:
"when you are timing these singer machines there are timing lines on the needle bar to help you get the exact timing required. When the needle bar is at the lowest position you will see two lines: one to mark the lowest point and then the other is used when the needle bar is on its rise. You stop on the second line then adjust the hook to the point where you stopped the needle. Then you should have perfect timing without guessing."

I realize this video is 11 years old, but just wanted to say thank you for saving my wifes sanity, as well as making me look like a hero ;-) . She had been agonizing and tinkering for two days trying to figure out what was wrong with her sewing machine, and eventually was in tears. She finally called the repair place, and they said yes, they know what this issue is (hook timing) but that we would need to bring it in, they could not talk it through over the phone. Not only was that going to cost us a repair visit, but also we live a long ways away from the repair place, out in the country, and so would have taken us a lot of gas as well as a day or two of time. I was helping her by researching online, and finally stumbled on your video. Grabbed a screwdriver and an Allen key set, and flipped the machine. Ours of course looked different underneath, but the concept was the same. Loosened the two set screws, adjusted the hook timing, and then put it back together. Wife ran a test, and it is now working beautifully!! Thank you so much, you made me look like a hero!! ;-)

You are a person after my own heart - "I'm not paying $90 if I can figure it out myself" too! I have watched a LOT of "timing fix" videos and YOURS is THE BEST! However you had the camera aimed to the underside to show EXACTLY the position that SHOULD be for the needle AND the "hook" was SO CLEAR that in less than 2 minutes I was able to fix the timing on an old Montgomery Ward machine I just got. My Seamstress Hat is OFF to YOU! Thank you for this video and stopping me from pulling ALL MY HAIR OUT!

Thanks for posting this video. My wife's "old" Singer machine's gear that drives the shuttle around wore and I have new gears coming in the mail that involve the shuttle. I was surprised I found the gears, but that's another story. Your understanding of the basic machine is the same or more than mine. BUT, your video showed me what I needed to know. It showed me the relationship between the needle and the bobbin shuttle as they go through their movements. THANKS AGAIN, I'm now not waiting in confusion for the parts to arrive.

Yeah it's a lot of money but businesses like this need to charge a good fee. How much is their monthly rent, counter staff wages, repair man wages, utilities, business taxes, other business costs, etc. Just being open for business costs them money...lots of it. If they go out of business and you need a more complex repair done (that you can't do yourself), you will have a pretty expensive shipping fee to an out of town manufacturer/repair. You will be glad they are still there to provide that service.
I'd be inclined to think it's expensive also, but just ask them why it costs that much - i guarantee you will appreciate why, a lot more after talking to the business owner.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I have a near new Singer I bought at at a garage sale for $20. Reportedly, it had stopped stitching after the lady sewed over her finger. A sewing machine sales & repair shop told me it would "cost more to fix than it was worth". And, of course, they would be happy to sell me a new machine. I had nothing to lose by trying to fix it myself. Your video greatly helped me diagnose and fix the problem.

I wish I would have found your video yesterday. I took my machine to the shop to have the timing adjusted for skipping stitches. I was too specific in my search for timing a sewing machine. (specific model) There are other areas of the needle rotation that need to be checked, so if this didn't work, I am confident you would have checked those also. Great video!

Thank you for posting this. My 25 year old singer (looks to be a very similar model) broke in the middle of shortening my daughter's prom dress - Argh! - and of course prom is less than a week away. The timing had been a little suspicious for some time, but today something finally caught, dragging the slightly stretchy hem into the machine (ouch!) and wrenching it out, I heard something move. Sure enough, the upper thread wouldn't catch anymore and there wasn't really time to drag it to the shop so close to the event. I started taking it apart (being an engineer), but was in a hurry to just get it done rather than explore the inner workings of my machine. It took me longer to find where my husband hid the allen wrenches than it did to adjust the timing and get it back in working order after seeing about half the video. The prom dress is done. Yay! I couldn't have driven it to the shop that fast.

Thank you! People need to be more into DIY, home appliances usually quit working due to maintenance issues! Too many people blame the machine for being a POS and will throw it away before looking into the problem.
I find this all the time with old washer and dryers. With dryers people get frustrated when they don't dry fast enough. They will try another used dryer and have the same problem.
What they don't know is the dryer works great and that the vent is clogged with lint!
Now I am into new technology and electronics, but I have to say old appliances wear made to be repaired! New appliances seem to be made to be replaced when they break!
    Thank you for your help!!!

I have a couple of Commodore 64"s on my closet shelf. :-) Yes, much that's made today is "disposable" & "designed obsolesce". Remember well when computer keyboards became disposable. More economical to replace than it was to repair. That's why TV repair shops have all but disappeared. (None in my area now.) There's money to be made when the old is tossed to be replaced by the "new & improved" rather than replacing a 10-cent washer or a $1 bushing.

After working on one of my machine got a little over 10 hours I figured it was the timing and I went through videos until I came across a video from Sew City and I followed it to a T in about 2 minutes and it works like a charm thank God for that man 👨 I hope I’ll never have to do my computerized machine but there will be a video for that also lol happy 😃 sewing 🧵

Thanks a million! I love when people take the time required to figure things out themselves. That's not being cheap, that's saving money! Someone would have had no problem charging you $90 to adjust that screw. It's a shame but that's the world we live in. As for the person who tried to blame you for breaking their sewing machine; Shame on them! Obviously their machine was not working before they tried your suggestion. It's people like that that feel justified in charging you $90 to adjust a screw, and act like they worked hours to get your machine on the right track again. SMH.
The rest of use who are like you trying to figure it out, Thank You!

Thanks, AnglesAvenge :) I should probably mention that I'm the one who broke the sewing machine in the first place, but that can be our little secret. Oh well. All's well that ends well.

So did you break it by forcing it to sew over something too thick? That's what I just did and now I seem to have this lousy and frustrating timing issue. Just wondering if that's what caused it for you too. Everything was fine until I went over way too thick part and forced it :(

@@deplorabledixie2834 lol don't feel so bad, I did the same thing. I got so mad I just janked the turning wheel so hard and heard a "bink". I left to go do something else and came back and my sewing machine didn't work haha. Luckily I was able to fix it by loosening the wheel, scooting the bobbin case up a notch, tightening it, good as new.

@@Emerii1 That is awesome that you were able to fix yours!! I couldn't follow the directions of this video so I just kind of pulled around on the bobbin area of mine and it seemed to shift to the left and then started working better, but I don't trust it at all and really scared to sew thick fabric now...I'm really babying it. Now have the problem of it making grinding noise (needs oil) and when I look online it says my model has to have a repair man oil it which I am not gonna do. I just ordered some oil and just gonna try putting it on the moving metal parts - that's what I saw in a video. We'll see how that goes..hopefully I won't wreck my machine.

This was so easy thank you!!! My machine is a whole lot different than yours but I was still able to figure it out and have it fixed within a few minutes of getting the outer casing off. Thank you!!!!

Thanks to the OP and to Nigel as well, I have 5 sewing machines I have been given as gifts, and a Singer, a Bernetta and a White all have timing issues. Thank you for the information, I was hoping I would not have to take them in.

Outstanding! I use a Singer 9410, basically the same as this one but a few less stitches. I have no problems with it yet, but when the timing goes out, I'll now know what to do. And thanks for the great close-ups and explanations.

I'm only 36 seconds in and I want to really thank and praise you for starting off the video with exactly what's going on and what you're going to talk about. EVERY other $%%$#$ video and blog on the internet starts off with a cute speech about why people sew, or why sewing machines use thread, or why it costs less money to fix things by yourself, and I have to advance through the vid to get to the ^&%$*&^ point.

That is amazing! I can't understand how the set screws would come loose to change the timing but it did for me also. Although they were sooo tight that I wasn't sure if that was the problem or if it would solve it. But after my needle kept getting a tiny hook bent on the end then it finally jammed up by hitting the bobbin cage hook. I couldn't go any further. Your detailed video of the needle and cage position was very helpful. I wouldn't have known where to set it without it. Many thanks!!!

Hi Nils I pay special attention to the sequence showing the hooking because it also shows the timing of the feed mechanism. My need is to rebuild both timings. One hook gear broke in parts and the jam-blocking damaged the teeth belt. Now I'm done replacing the gear, about to replace the belt and adjust it all.
Your 2:57 3:40 sequence is exactly what I need to do this. Moreover, nice video definition!
    Thanks!
