You have a gift of conveying your ideas with clarity for absolute beginners like myself. I hope you keep making these more educational videos, I think that’s where you really shine. Thanks Pat.
Dude, you just won UA-cam. I have watched SO many hours of photography content and all of it combined did not contain anything as complete and coherent as what you've just presented here. I'm only 5 videos into your channel and you've become my newest photography hero.
This is hands down the best photo video I've ever seen on UA-cam, this is the type of photography lessons I've been looking for, really appreciate the work dude.
I've finally found someone who explained my subconscious thought process. Way back, my photography teacher said I had an eye for what is a beautiful photo but I think this is what she really meant. Most educational photo video I've ever watched thanks for this.
I've been watching photography videos for years on UA-cam, and this might be the best one on the topic of composition! Bravo! You are an excellent teacher.
The most helpful photography video on UA-cam! I see so many beginners focus on camera/gear, Hacks and tips and tricks to get better and forget about story! Well said dude. I find I’m very particular with my photography and video work now, I will normally have a vision in my mind of what the story/emotion I want to convey and it makes shooting so much easier as you said because your shooting with intention and not just pointing your camera at something that looks “nice”
Bro…. I’m pausing the video at about the 3-minute point. I think this is maybe the second or third video of yours that’s I’ve watch. The content is spot on, genuinely helpful information which will actually benefit many photographers on many different levels. Top work. Thank you. Oh and for reference, I found you bc you created a video explain exactly what the ‘collaboration’ tool does in LR. Pretty much one of the best editing videos I’ve watched on UA-cam.
Something about your vibe on learning different and new techniques has had me hooked! I subscribed after viewing the video of 4 simple ways. Super eye opener. thank you!!!
Excellent. I would add another important element to a photographer's vision and development. As you state, one is "pattern recognition" but there is another I would call "content recognition". Two examples of this are people's expressions and people's activities. This vision is particularly important to a certain segment of the street photography genre. With these photographers, much of the pattern recognition you've outlined is either ignored or of secondary importance to the interesting, unusual, mysterious, candid, etc. expressions and activities of the people in the photograph. That said .. there are street photographers that straddle that line between fine art photography (where pattern recognition is important) and street photography (where human expressions and actions are important). They skillfully combine them both. Thanks again for the great video.
I’ve watched several photography tutorials on UA-cam and you managed to make yours as complex, vague and overwhelming as possible, almost every beginner will not appreciate this.
You just don't have the capacity to understand his way of teaching,if you think this is complex and overwhelming then you should just watch other generic UA-cam telling people to buy expensive gear lol
This guy just opened my eyes... You thought me how to master or improved all of those mixed lessons, trying to learn photography on UA-cam.. Big thank you brother...
I really learn so much from your videos. They're better than a class room plus you hold my interest the way you teach. Thank you for your time and knowledge.
Absolutely incredible! I’ve watched hundreds of photography videos the last five weeks and this is easily the best. Extremely clear. Thank you for describing the core of what matters!
The real secret is not even a secret. it's experience, no shortcut. Some can learn fast, some slow, some has a lot of time to go out and shoot, some don't. Experience and motivation that drives you into getting better every time you push that shutter button is the key for a better Pictures. IMO. Good Vid Man! Subscribed!
This video should be mandatory viewing for every photography student. Very crisp and clear. Great example image and well articulated. Thanks for your thoughts and insights.
Great perspective - I joined VERO because I’m back in the photography game and figured it wound be a good way to have some focus and learn. But I’ve hardly gone on it. It’s just another thing I have to think about doing. So it’s pushed me to analyze the platforms I’m on, why, and whether or not I will continue on all of them. Thanks for always being true and transparent.
This is really helpful. I have watched multiple videos talking about the rules, I searched all skills of photography, but I am still confusion of how to take a great photo. Today as watching your video I realized all skills other UA-camr gave is a “body” and how to strengthen it. And your video gives the “heart” or “soul” of the body really thank you,.
This is great. I believe this could have been titled a "composition" video, but the way you've articulated it around "vision" makes the same principles apply to different arts (I can see this applying to music and guitar playing for example). The way you took a step back from camera settings, then from composition techniques, to visual language is genius and beautiful. Thanks.
I love your honesty and depth of truth so much. It is helping me so much to get out of my creative bubble and just start sharing my work so I can actually grow and learn from what I make. Thank you for sharing 🙏
What a brilliant video. I tried several channels to really understand the nuts and bolts of photography - and then I chanced upon you, Pat. You're brilliant at this. One question - if I want to understand the visual hierarchy and its components in a detailed, structured manner, what do I refer to? Any books etc.? Look forward to beginning my theoretical journey of photography.
Fantastic educational video! This got to be one of the best video on photography that I have watched on UA-cam. A must-watch, I think. Thank you so much for sharing it!
Something fresh, fast and that speaks to me. I'm with this permanent reflection to go one level further (break my skill ceiling), it's difficult in practice to assemble a lot of languages, but it's important to know your alphabet to compose your vocabulary. The exercise of concentrating on a subject is a very good start, what you say goes in the right direction for me, I like the calm and rhythm of your speech. Greetings from Switzerland (the other Japan without the sea).
Man, the words you used to explain your point of view on this subject where so enjoyable to listen. Thanks for taht! It's hard to find this kind of quality where you can feel a real human being on the other side 🙌
This is perhaps the most informative thing on photography I have seen on youtube. Thank you for posting this. It re-framed (pun intended!) how to look at composition and vision in a way that made me re-think my old habits. Please keep it up! :)
This video has given me more confidence then ever before to create what I call Artography. I'm a older Photographer, and my work in my mind has always been criticized by myself too much. This video tells me I have a visual mind, and what I have been doing, and succeeding, and failing at. It's confirmation for me. Very well articulated, this is colligate level teaching! I subscribed. Well done! Looking forward to more on this.
Tell it like it is! This is the first video of yours that I have watched. You were able to explain to me some of the things I "didn't know that I didn't know". Thanks for that. I'm going to spend some time watchiing the rest of your content. Subscribed.
awesome distillation of what photography is, it's clear you have a good understanding of the concepts involved in photography and also you're good at explaining those concepts!
thank you so much for the detailed explanation on how to develop that vision! this was a different approach than expected but in a good way! need to practice all these patterns asap ✌️
This is absolutely one of the most helpful and insightful videos I’ve come across as I try to figure out how to improve as a photographer. I knew I couldn’t speak the language of photography and was relegated to words like “nice”, “beautiful”, and “great shot”, when asked to comment on others’ images in our camera club meetings. Your video really helped my understanding of what I could do to learn to speak photography. Please consider doing other videos where you take us through an image as you did in this video. Thanks so much for the great insights!
wow you're such an eloquent speaker, I really appreciate it 🙏🏻 it makes sense though bc you're able to not only grasp but also articulate the visual communication you talk about 🙌🏻
Subbed instantly. I am so glad I found this channel because it feels like I finally found someone who is not only good at photography but is also so approachable. Love the simplification of things and a reference to language in most of your videos is an add-on for me as a lit graduate. I'm a freelance photographer and I'm sure your channel will help me hone my skills! Keep up :)
Such a good video. I love how you explain some of the theory and "abstract" part of it, but you also go on and give practical advice on how to improve on it. A lot of advice on these things tend to stop with the first part, leaving the viewer without any real guidance on how to begin the journey.
Absolutely Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. I believe my photography will change from this moment forward. I believe I will finally begin to visually express myself, instead of technically taking pictures. Subbed immediately.
Yes! Good to see some discussion on visual art principles rather than videos on gear, software, exotic locations from the YT Photog community! I was a little confused about some of the terminology used, may be splitting hairs a bit. What you described as "patterns" I think of as visual design elements. What you described as "vision" I think of as composition. Nevertheless, a great discussion on the importance of learning and practicing visual design principles from someone who has expertise. Subbed!
How do you rate the Sony a7r4 in low light situations (high iso) high megapixel count? What is the optimum ISO that one should not go over? I am asking this because I’m thinking of getting one and doing a lot of comparisons among it and the Canon R5 and the Nikon Z7ii. Your input would definitely help.
You have a gift of conveying your ideas with clarity for absolute beginners like myself. I hope you keep making these more educational videos, I think that’s where you really shine. Thanks Pat.

Just wanted to take a moment to say how super satisfying the colour grading in this video is.
Your integrity is one of my favorite parts of your videos
This is hands down the best photo video I've ever seen on UA-cam, this is the type of photography lessons I've been looking for, really appreciate the work dude.
The intro is so me! Thats the reason why I’ve got into photography 🙌🏽
I've finally found someone who explained my subconscious thought process. Way back, my photography teacher said I had an eye for what is a beautiful photo but I think this is what she really meant. Most educational photo video I've ever watched thanks for this.
Pat that was a wonderful lesson such a great approach to all photo junkies.
You’re a natural teacher.
The Best educator so far I found on UA-cam.
Good job Pat 👏
It's a blessing to have stumbled across your channel. THANK YOU!!!!!!
I just wanna compliment u on how beautifully colorgraded this video is 🥰
I've been watching photography videos for years on UA-cam, and this might be the best one on the topic of composition! Bravo!

Ideas and vision always trumps technical perfection
Jam packed with great advice for aspiring photographers… you sold the VISION!

Me too!
Agree ☝️
The best photography advice on UA-cam.... great video...
Thanks man! If I was starting today as a photographer, this is the video I should need to watch! But even after years, I’m still studying those things
man, you've articulated a good way to approach developing one's vision so well. thank you for this! 🙌🏻
anytime! my pleasure :)
the reason this only has one comment other than mine in a year is because it said everything needed to be said, no more no less
I’ve watched several photography tutorials on UA-cam and you managed to make yours as complex, vague and overwhelming as possible, almost every beginner will not appreciate this.
???
You just don't have the capacity to understand his way of teaching,if you think this is complex and overwhelming then you should just watch other generic UA-cam telling people to buy expensive gear lol
Subscribed. One of the best photography videos on YT. Thanks.

Wonderful pedagogue! It is soooo helpful. 3 videos later and I am hooked! Already subscribed, thanks!
Well explained. I learned a lot
Extremely good description of visual language and composition. Most people don’t explain at all
clicked on this not expecting very much, but was very pleasantly surprised. some excellent and deep analysis here, thanks!
Absolutely incredible! I’ve watched hundreds of photography videos the last five weeks and this is easily the best. Extremely clear. Thank you for describing the core of what matters!
Thank you for dropping this knowledge for photography
I've recently become competent at doing 360s but they're ho-hum creatively. Now I know why, and what to do about it. Thankyou. I'm inspired!

Amazing breakdown. I love the emphasis on the no short cuts, tiktok videos or Instagram hacks.
Wow man, this video really made a lot of things click for me. I really appreciate it.
