I'm a beginner in photography and I've been watching A LOT of tutorials on youtube. This might just be the single most well-made out of all of them. I'm genuinely amazed by how much useful information was condensed into this video in a concise and comprehensible manner. Great job!
I literally feel the exact same way. I can't agree more. I grabbed a camera, grabbed a lens, took a few shots and wondered why they were all dark, grainy, and not crisp. This video answered like all of those questions lol.
Although i already understand the basics of ISO/aperture/shutter speed, i found this video a helpful refresher particularly the explanation about why sometimes at low apertures the shot can end up out of focus. Cheers Jason!
I took photos for my friend at her reception and ended up with such grainy photos I wanted to cry!! Thank you for posting this! Sooo helpful! Understanding the relationship between shutter speed and ISO is such a game changer! Love your simple/straightforward explanation!
If you've set the correct aperture and shutter speed for the effect you want, having your ISO too low will result in an underexposed shot. You will get more noise trying to fix the underexposure in post, than you would have, if you'd used the correct ISO, even if it's "high". If you have to use ISO 12,000 to get the exposure right, use ISO 12,000. It is almost ALWAYS better to get the exposure right, in the camera, than to try to fix it, in post.
Jason I'm new to photography, this is the best video I've watched explaining these concepts.(I watched A LOT) Thank you for the effort and quality videos
Jason Vong explains things in such a simple way! I've watched TONS of other pro UA-cam channels on photography from other Pros yet Jason tells things that even an amateur like myself, who barely understands things like F-stops, can follow what Jason is saying. Thanks, dude for being generous with your time to make these helpful tutorials and yes I am now a subscriber!
Awesome video I knew pretty much everything he said he explained/demostrasted better than most videos I've ever seen. Very refreshing I wish I saw this one when I first started
Wow! the way you explain things clearly and with simple words and even adding illustrations is so helpful! been watching many videos and got lost with all these magical terms. Finally someone who gets us beginners who have no notions to find a good starting point! Thank you Jason!
@@JasonVong You should also include explanation of when the subject is further away from the camera, then DoF gets larger, so i.e. shooting at f1.4 will have different DoF depending on how far the subject is from the camera. I assume you know that, right...?
I just consumed your street photography video (hour and something long) and now this back to back and I feel like I've been watching for only like 10 min... your content is so good, informative. I am still learning without my camera (hoping to get my Sony a7IV soon) and I cant believe this type of material is free. Thanks man, people like me appreciate this so very much. Greetins from Costa Rica !
This is the best video i have every seen on explaining the settings. thank you for your expertise. as a armature, i am wanting to get more into my new camera and your videos help
Hey man, don't cry....I care about your content, you are one of the youtuber that I learn to use my A6500! And now, I learn every day a little bit more on my A7SIII !!!!! Great upgrade for low light picture!!!! Thanks Jason!
Straight and to the point. That's why you're the best. Other photo UA-camrs talk for so long about their own personal lives. Thanks for letting us know the facts.
Great video as you identified some issues not often discussed. The one thing you didn’t mention with depth of field was that distance matters, though your example with the Mario carts actually illustrated it. Because you were really close it took a really narrow aperture to bring everything into focus, which actually is desirable with certain types of photography. That tripped me up, especially when I upgraded to a full frame camera.
holy God, Holy God!! This man doesn't even know what he's done for me. This is so easy to understand, over 2 years and I couldn't get dof, shu8tter speed or appr correctly. This does it!! Thanks man.
You explained this in a way where I can finally 'click' with why ISO and shutter speed can go hand in hand with color/brightness. THANKS !!! I'm sloooooooowly getting all these little thing to make sense.
You thought me something new. I did a portrait photo shoot recently. I was using f1.7. And using face tracking AF. The nose was often in focus and eyes slightly off. Next time I’ll choose the tiny box pinpoint AF to get right at the eyes. Also, a video idea for you. Show how different focal length lenses will show background closer or farther. (I’m not talking about depth of field focus). I’m talking about how if you shoot a portrait in 35mm the background will seem very far away and small. If you switch to 100mm the background is compressed and closer / larger in the background. I only understood this recently after years of shooting photos, so I know many beginner photographers don’t know this. I believe it is called Lens Compression. Cheers!
Hi Jason... I'm a noob photographer and your videos are the most awesome vids I've seen breaking down everything technical thing to something I can really understand ... Thanks again...
I looked at various videos before i got to this one. you were the best in explaining the camera functions. Hooray. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Awesome refresher.
Oh Man... One of the easiest explanation to understand I have seen around... Aperture concept was on to the point and clear.... I am still on Aperture Prio mode till now. Now I can switch to Manual mode with more confidence..Thanks @Jason Vong.
i like how you explain it sir, im newbie in photography and i still using auto mode hehe, i keep searching for this kind of video tutorial for me to learn in manual mode. thanks ser
This the first video that, 'literally' showed what the depth of field means. Hats off to such a brilliant video and the scholarly explanation. Subscribed!
Jason, I have been studying photography since 2016 and I still come back to this rule and lesson for my baseline setup when I'm dialing in my camera and either swapping in a new lens or working in new environments.
Such precise, simple, easy-to-understand explanation. And the simple clarification on using manual mode at the end there, makes you, sir, a GOOD content creator. Much love from Malaysia
My boy…. Yes I feel like you’re my boy now since I’ve spent hours watching you the last couple of days. THANK YOU!! I really love and appreciate your content ❤️
I'm definitely learning something new, I never realized that the shutter speed is one of the main reasons I get really blurry looking photos. Thank you for teaching us.
I am learning photography.Even though I don't have a camera, I enjoy watching your videos. You teach me clearly. I am eager to buy a camera and learn more. Thank you soo much
04:35 is gold! Much appreciated. Thanks for explaining and especially showing (moving the camera back and forth) it to me as I was 5 years old 😄 I mainly do car photography and sometimes I have a detail (a badge for example) in focus, but the grill is partially blurry.
Thank you for taking time making this great video. I'm a victim of the miss focus and now I understand it more. Loved the Depth of Field explanation. Wrote down all your steps and will keep it in my phone's notes.
Best video I watched, it helped a lot, I’ve been doing this for 2 years and still learning, I appreciate you doing this, you just cut to the point and it’s easy to understand
You should do a video about editing software you like to use. Your videos are real informative and I respect your opinion and would like to know more about what you use to edit, software, hardware, etc.
