  • Solar Ash is a different kind of follow up to beloved indie game Hyper Light Drifter. Here's a fairly brief review of my thoughts on it.

If you want something more akin to 3D Sonic (but with less jank), Spark The Electric Jester 3 seems right up your alley. Haven't played it myself, but from the videos I've seen of it/about it, it seems exactly like what you've asked for.

    Hello Mr. Cobracodex.
Was also excited for Solar Ash to come out to Steam this year and should probably finish it soon.
Really liked the snarky undertones some story beats had.
Are you aware of spark the electric jester? yakkocmn has made a great video on it, and its a 3d Sonic game if it wasn't hampered by awful dev/publisher decisions.
    Keep it up.

Yea I feel like I undersold the story stuff in this game a bit. Not life changing or anything but fairly enjoyable for what it is. Just kinda jarring coming off of HLD
I've heard good things about Spark 3 but haven't had a chance to play it much. No in game remapping is kind of a bummer, but I'd like to give it a fair shake at some point. Also you can just call me Cobra lol

Funnily enough, for someone like me 5 hour playtime is a selling point. I don't have as much spare time to play games anymore, which makes me anxious to start long ones (that I'd either abandon it or get obsessed and blow a hole in my schedule, best case scenario it'll just take me forever to finish). 5 hours is still on the shorter side but I absolutely don't mind. Especially if it's damn good 5 hours.

I feel similarly in that I'm appreciating experiences that respect my time more as I get older. Idk if I could've justified a full $40 for Solar Ash compared to what else I could get for that price on steam though. There's definitely a balance between money and play time but it varies based on taste mostly

@@CobraCodex Yeah, fair, that's still pretty steep for what it is .

Interesting game, I've been in a bit of a phase lately where I've played a bunch of Sonic-likes, so I have to ask you based on your intro narration: Have you ever heard of the Spark the Electric Jester series? Except for the first game, which was in 2D, those games are very much high-speed, momentum based 3D platformers in the vein of something like a hybrid Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
The third game actually just came out a few weeks before Sonic Forces, and has basically made people go "Sega, for the love of god, hire this man!" by being more or less a glimpse of the good timeline where Sega didn't try to reinvent the wheel, stuck to the movement- and momentum based gameplay formula and polished it for years.

Spark 3 seems fun from what I've tried. Couldn't get a buttons remapped the way I like through Steam, but I wanna try again when I get a chance. And yea, the 3D sonic games I've tried after Heroes haven't really done much for me in the long run. The ones I haven't played I have no interest in tbh

@@CobraCodex If you're up for 2D platformers as well, I'd actually recommend going through the entire Franchise in order (even though Spark 2 is a little bit of an unpolished middle child). The story the solo dev built throughout the franchise is pretty bananas and worth experiencing as a whole.

I myself love Solar ash’s narrative. I feel like the dialogue is very realistic, the characters have flaws, and overall Rei is one of the most realistic and best female protagonist in a indie title.

Fair enough, I remember what was there being solid. I just thought something was lost atmospherically compared to how the narrative of HLD was handled

@@CobraCodex Probably another thing to mention probably to pick your interest is that Rei seems more like a perfectionist if you think about it.
