I’m relatively new to comics, I’ve only been reading for a few years and I haven’t even scratched the surface of half the content out there so my opinion isn’t well informed but James Tynion IV’s Detective Comics run was the book that got me into comics so if I had to name a favourite writer I’d probably pick him. As I said his Detective run has a special place in my heart and is just incredible and I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read from him since.
His run on Detective was freaking awesome. Agreed.

Cool list, actually surprised on how "low" certain writers ended up on your list but i'll reserve judgement for part 2 :D. You almost had me gasping for Fabian as I thought you were not going to mention New Warriors but you recovered and then some :D. Also don't forget Rucka is a fantastic writer of female characters such as his amazing Wonder Woman and Queen and Country.

@@JonDelArroz Yep. He did some great stories with Ron Lim on art. Check out Thanos Quest. But Starlin with Starlin art is doubly good.
I really liked Rucka's Wolverine. The art in The Brotherhood blew my mind when I first read it, and I used Ribic's cover for the Nightcrawler issue for a Color Theory assignment in 2016.
I read Fell a few weeks and loved it. Please do a Old Reader/New Reader on it with Jess.

I just got into comics recently, and because I really like Jim Lee's drawing I picked up All-Star Batman and Robin. I actually really like Frank Miller's writing in it...which I'm discovering is an unpopular opinion lol I appreciate what he was trying to do with the inversion of Batman and Joker's...temperaments. It's really creative, out of the box thinking! I even prefer it to his Dark Knight Returns, the only other book of his I've read, though I've seen Sin City as a movie. Anyway, just thought I'd represent for people who like All-Star Batman and Robin ;)
Here is the thing. Just because it’s unpopular, it shouldn’t take your joy away from enjoying that book. :) represent for sure!

Gotta say, I personally think Kurt Busiek’s best work is his run on Conan with Carey Nord. It’s the work that is closest to the original Robert E. Howard stories, and done so magnificently. It builds on that original foundation with amazing artwork and modernizes the spirit.
I love that run. But reading Roy Thomas for the first time as these omnis come out really gives me a different perspective. So avengers is the book that i think is the best of the best of Busiek.

BKV, Jeff Lemire, and Rick Remender. Loved everything by them and will give anything they do a chance. Jason Aaron and Donny Cates are up there, the Dr. Strange run from Aaron right into Cates= flawless! And haven't read a lot of Garth Ennis but his Hellblazer run was my favorite.

Any time there is a Best Of...list of literally anything--Best Writers, Best Toilet Paper-- it's both interesting and inevitably controversial ("How could you leave Rob Liefeld off this list? He's number one!!!"). Anyway, Alan Moore absolutely positively a thousand percent has to be at the top of the heap. Probably in close proximity to Stan Lee and Neil Gaiman. Personally I'd have Jaime Hernandez right next to Moore. As for your list so far: I'd say David Michelinie came before Busiek. I just saw some Netflix action pic based on a Remender comic and it sucked. Then again so did my brief encounter with Tokyo Ghost (nice art though). Roger Stern was rock solid, but no Steve Gerber. I have always felt like Frank Miller was an incredibly mediocre writer (that dialogue!) but listening to Comics Kayfabe's exhaustive Dark Knight review may have changed my mind. I hate Sin City, but maybe because I find noir so boring and repetitive.
It's tricky, right? Some people get offended personally. DK is amazing to this day. But really for me it goes Sin City> DD Miller > DK
How about a top 20 (two part video) of underrated writers? I have a few suggestions:
Charles Soule: his worldbuilding for Swamp Thing was amazing and his book got a helluva finale that kinda pulls a Morrison with a meta referential ending.
Robert Venditti: critically underrated New 52 Flash. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps was one of Rebirth's best books and easily gives anything Johns wrote a run for its money. I feel he was written off too early because reception to Lights Out wasn't great.
Tony S. Daniel: We all agree he's a hulluva better artist than he is a writer, but he produced some good post Final Crisis Batman and wrote Deathstroke, the best pure action book of the New 52.
Dan Abnett: I hear the GotG films are based on his run. But, that's not what I feel he's underrated for. He wrote quite possibly the best Aquaman run ever, the only guy who can give Johns's run a competing bid (because I think both their runs are better than David's, even if he defined Aquaman for the 90s).
And I want to mention Peter Tomasi as the most under appreciated talent in the industry, largely by DC themselves. He writes one of the greatest Superman runs ever, writes the quintessential all ages book in Super Sons TWICE, filled in a lot of the blanks for Johns during his GL run, and they took him off Superman to make room for the most overrated writer in comics history in Bendis!
Greg Rucka did a great run on Batman too. May have been Detective Comics specifically. He was a big part in No Man's Land too which I'm ready for those omnis to come. Probably getting the Road to NML coming this year. And your reviews for the Knightfall omnis convinced me to have to get those now. I think they could squeeze in the Contagion and Legacy stories into one omni, which would work because Legacy was a sequel to Contagion anyway. Sorry back to Rucka, he did work very well with Brubaker on Gotham Central. Whiteout was a great murder mystery as well. And the movie wasn't half bad either. Ellis is good as well. I enjoyed Transmetropolitan and what few Hellblazer books they let him write. Planetary is definitely the cream of the crop. The art by John Cassaday elevates that book to something special. Took forever for them to do but the full Omni is a treat. Frank Miller has fallen away from his former glory unfortunately. But honestly his work in his prime is a very tough act to follow. Like old Metallica vs new Metallica, it's just not the same quality. And I didn't know I needed a copy of Big Damn Sin City until this video. So thanks. Lol. (Ok, I'll forgive you, this time). I'm sure more of my favorite writers will pop up on your next video. But one person I'd like to mention because he may not be top 10 for you, is J. Michael Straczynski. He is really good at writing comics. I feel like he understands Superman on a level that few writers can. But for his best work (that I've read) that I'm torn between is Midnight Nation and Rising Stars. Both would make a great TV series. Midnight Nation may be better suited for an epic 3 hour movie since it's a shorter series. Rising Stars would be a perfect 3 season show. It would be a better version of Heroes if it was done well. Also, Busiek's run on Conan for Dark Horse was awesome. I'm a big Conan fan due to that run.
JMS is an excellent writer. I don't hear enough people talking about Midnight Nation.
@@NearMintCondition Agreed. Midnight Nation is incredible. The art by Gary Frank really elevates the story. And that story had a deep personal connection with me as well. I was going through a rough patch in my life with drugs and depression and have always been a night owl and really resonated with the afterward by JMS and his idea behind the title of Midnight Nation. That was the world I was in. The metaphors in the story reflected aspects of my life. It helped me see a way out of the bad stuff. Comics have always helped me be a better person. I'll always stand by that. Thankfully I'm in a much better place now and spend my money on books and movies these days. Going back to Gary Frank, his work with Geoff Johns on Superman Secret Origin was phenomenal. I felt like I was seeing Christopher Reeve as Superman again. And if I'm being honest, the story could have been the perfect thing to adapt as a Superman reboot movie. And back to JMS, I want a reprint of Riding Stars as a HC Omnibus. And I'd love a deluxe HC of Midnight Nation. I seriously doubt they'd do an Absolute edition though. But that book does need more love. I lent my copy to a lot of people until one person lost it.

Love it and I hope they finish it.
Favorite writers and Best writers aren't always the same thing. I'm heavily a DC guy, so what I know is from that side, but I know a good bit about comics history and who's who.
Some of my favorites include obviously Geoff Johns, who is perhaps the most prolific writer in the last 20 years. He's my #1 objective pick because, sure you have Claremont's X-Men, but that's more or less one book he wrote for two decades, while Johns wrote everything and everyone, even possibly giving three different characters their best runs ever: Aquaman, Wally West Flash, and Green Lantern. That's unmatched.
I love Scott Snyder, and for more than just his Batman. After Black Mirror, everything with his name on it is a top 5 best seller each month. The guy = money. He wouldn't if he only wrote one good story and that was it. His Swamp Thing is just as good as his New 52 Batman, and he's probably the best horror writer in comics in the last 10 years. Plus, he finally brought the JL title to what it should've been at the start of Rebirth instead of being the "Michael Bay" book of the relaunch. American Vampire is the perfect cure to "Twilight".
Peter Tomasi really caught my attention by writing possibly one of the greatest Superman runs ever.
I love pretty much everything Jeff Lemire has written that I've read. Probably the greatest variety and range of anyone in the industry.
Love Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing, and Killing Joke, but that's about the only Moore I really like. Couldn't get through Watchmen. Much preferred the film.
And I've loved just about all Robert Venditti I've read. His New 52 Flash is underrated, and his Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps is the first GL book to give anything Johns wrote a run for its money. Like his Hawkman too.
Sorry for the big ass comment, but if you want to talk about objective Best writers then that's a totally different list. You have to take into account how much work was done, the quality, money generated, and largely the impact on the history of the industry. In no particular order:

@@NearMintCondition could I also as a new viewer of this channel and new reader of comic books, (and I haven't searched through all your videos, so forgive me) suggest that you do a couple videos aimed towards newer readers about books that are widely available, not out of print or very hard to find or extremely expensive to buy. Perhaps some good, cheap, available omnibus to begin with, or smaller, 1 shot or short series trade paperbacks to begin expanding a collection. Thanks, keep up the good worm

Just Me This is why I have very little respect for comic book pros as individuals because some of them get really sensitive/ testy towards fans. When you are a creative expect criticism. It may not be fair and heck, it can be mean. But grit your teeth and ignore/ handle it with grace. How one responds to critics I argue reveals who they are as a person more than how they respond to praise.
Even if the criticism is constructive and you're trying to be fair.

Near Mint Condition well you gotta pick someone who has been in the industry for long and who can write even the most obscure stuff and make it mainstream and have that literary touch. JR is a Brit with all that and he did revamp starman in the 90s. Which set the stage for all these new guys to follow his footsteps and do the same. He wins hands down. U gotta respect the old school no matter what

Somewhat unexpected that Rucka, Lemire and Remender are not in your top 10. But I think it's fine that at least some of the Moore, Gaiman, Morrison, Kirby, Lee, Bryne, Claremont, Snyder, Cates and Brubaker get to be in it :). Though it's equally possible that you left Lee, Kirby, Claremont and Snyder out for Roy Thomas, Denny O'Neill, George Perez or Tom King... Gotta be 10 of these 14 :) Would be very surprised to see someone that's not on this list like Mark Millar or Mark Waid in your top. Just kidding. I know your number #1 is Jonathan Hickman!
