    Hey, thanks for this detailed video! I was advised to practice lunges to help with hip soreness after doing squats with low weight. All the videos I found were short: "just go straight down" but I couldn't seem to figure out HOW.
    Your suggestion on using the counter as well as to keep the back heel raised made it finally click.

    This is helpful. I'm in my 60s, and I run (or did) about 5 miles a day. I have arthritis in one knee, and it's getting more difficult as I get older. (I hobble around a lot after a run.) I might have to give the running up or retreat to the elliptical. That said, I do have some basic leg strengthening exercises I got from a bout with physical therapy. Lunges seem like they may help to strengthen things even more. I assume you have to tighten the core to successfully go up and down. It's nice to see it done without dumbbells Thank you for your video.

    This is amazing lady , love your care and passion please don’t feel this is a criticism but my own opinion and experience - I have to disagree about using the hip hinge in the lunge, if you hip hinge with a lunge without driving knee forwards but driving back with gluts it makes glut max prime mover rather than the quad dominance with straight up and down .
    I have grade 4 arthritis in both knees , with a hinge lunge knee in alignment it causes no pain , back straight is soooo painful . If not impossible . You should hear the noise yet with a hinge it’s noise and pain free , My gluts are amazing as well lol . Plus it’s more functional in terms of lifting technique .

    Hi Jessica ,
    Great video. I just wanted to enquire whether lunges are safe if you have a history of lumbar fusionL4L5. Also please could you do a video with exercises to strengthen the back after a spinal fusion. Your teaching is excellent.

    Thanks for this great video: as if you made it for me! Especially the tip to hold on to a chair/the wall is worth its weight in gold for beginners like me, because you can concentrate on the clean execution in peace - disregarding the balance at first. Is the front leg slightly bent or straight at the beginning and end of the movement?

    I've always struggled with lunges, to the point I didn't want to do them. Your tips are awesome!! Just curious though, for an obese person, is the regular lunge still a good idea or should I start with the stair lunge?

    Is there an alternative for the heel staying off the ground? I injured my left foot a few months ago and bending my toes in that foot hurts and I end up collapsing down to my heel 😂

    Great tips! I’m still having knee pain in the back leg during the movement. While I feel like I have control over alignment in my front leg and therefore can prevent knee pain in that knee during the lunge , I’m having more trouble finding a way to bend the back knee with control (to avoid bending it in a way that causes pain).Any tips?

      You might want to just lunge not as low to begin to get strength and mobility in the knee before you go further down...hope that helps...the weight to come up mostly comes from the front leg/glute, so in my case, it's about 70% using the front leg to come back up and down, the back leg has about 30% of my body weight on it, I try for less usually.

    Hi, I have just stumbled across your channel and binge watching. I have no strength in my quads/glutes so really struggle with squats and lunges as my muscles do not lengthen enough nor do I have the strength to get back up so this seems a great place to start. I have had surgery on my left great toes (not fused but much of the joint removed) so my toes on the left side do not bend enough for me to get into position with heel up. Is there a work around or is it just using the step method? Thank you.

    • @JessicaValantPilates
      @JessicaValantPilates  Рік тому +1

      With fused toes and ankles the best method is the step up so you don't injure your toes more! You can also try to find a range of motion with the heel up that feels good by shortening your step.

      Strengthen your glutes then come back to practicing lunges.
      Also try reverse instead of forward lunges, if you must.
