Jimmy Somerville "Smalltown Boy" (breathtaking vocals), Let's Rock Bristol, 6 June 2015

- This is little Jimmy Somerville, formerly of Bronski Beat and The Communards singing one of the best songs ever to come out of the 80s. His vocal performance, especially at the end of the song, defies belief. A fantastic song with high notes that no man aged 54 (in 2015) should be able to reach!
This is my first video to reach 500,000 views (on 17 Nov 2017), 800,000 (on 6 Sep 2018) and 1.4 million (25 Mar 2020) which I'm quite pleased about.
Enjoy!
He's STILL got that INCREDIBLE voice. This is such an emotive song, and Jimmy puts SO much into it.
The anthem for every person who’s not horrible and loves everyone. ❤️
I was a little provincial boy, and still am. This song made me become aware of many aspects of myself .. it freed me .... thanks from an old man who was a child then.
How is this even possible?!! 54 years old & his voice has the sustain & range of a 25 year old. Absolutely incredible that he can still hit those notes seemingly with ease. He is an amazing man, amazing writer & vocalist. Here's to another 54 years, Jimmy!
He sings from his abdomen, not his throat, maybe this is something to do with the maintenance of his voice.
Amazing ...theres another guy like jimmy in clubland ..same thing in his 50s we were like wow ..the band was called betcha by golly wow with the dixon agency ..we booked them for a party ..closest thing to jimmy Somerville we've heard ..but yep jimmy show the kids how to do it ..rock on
Class is permanent 👏🏻👏🏻👍
Well, he dances like a 25 years old Smalltown boy too. 😏😅
I was born in 69, nice timing mum and dad, I was a teenager in the 80's, JUST SUPERB MUSIC. XX
I was born in 69 too, my birthday is this week!
MrLongbow1415 I was born in 68,i would not change it a bit, great years to live through!
Lucky you! Wow!
Snap 1969
1969 here too
His falsetto is to die for. I just love that man. His voice transports me back in time. Thanks for posting. It's lovely to see him again. Still adorable.
Jimmy Somerville is an amazing man with an incredible voice. I have long felt that he has never received the adulation that he so rightly deserves.
stephen Dann buddy your 100% right.
Totally agree
@ Knob jockey you are...
100%.
Absolutely 100% stunning falsetto and definitely deserves far more recognition has great stage presence too what a legend Jimmy x
I'm an "old " metal head and I loooove Sir Jimmy because we have some stuff in common like true dedication and complete commitment. This little man is 100% dedicated and, for that, I will always respect him and enjoy his performance.
His voice hasn't diminished a bit. Wow.
Wonderful! Mr Somerville has a wonderfully unique voice. Loved Bronski Beat and the Communards.
spot on
exactly!!!!!!. very wide scale!!!!!! of voice.
One of the most emotional songs ever sung by one of the best voices ever...after all these years, that amazing falsetto still gives you chills down your spine.Jimmy is awesome.
mangadrummer85 don't forget the incredible voice of Holly Johnson. Cheers
Along with “For a Friend”
Simon Ellison I can't listen to For a Friend. It makes me cry too much, but it's a beautiful song. I suppose my reaction to it is because of the incredible talent of The Communards. Music or poetry (2 sides of the same coin) that don't move us have failed. It was written for Mark Ashton, wasn't it? He was a man who really deserve to live to see gay marriage introduced in the UK, at least. He packed so much into his short life, & strove for a better life for all.
On a more pleasant topic, the whole of Red is a fantastic album.
I tear up when this song plays. I just can't help it. He's still adorable.
It's fantastic to hear that the audience sings this beautiful old song along. This is a great message.
Just incredible.....after all these years at 54, Jimmy's still crushin' it like a boss. Hats off to you, Sir !
Wow 😲 and THAT is why you can't beat the 80's 😌👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
His singing makes me smile and move almost 2020 and I am 67. wheeeeeeeee
WOW! I remember dancing to this music!
Those were the days....when we were young.
Those were the days weren't they? Thought that was what life was going to be like.. now realize how good we had it.. (not just the music.. the economy, society, etc. etc ) I fear it will never be the same..
oliviaD
Where did the time go, and how did the years fly so fast! Yes - it was a good time to be young and the world was close enough to touch.
theinkbrain I don't know!, they sure do though, don't they! However, it is good to see my peers like Jimmy looking so good & so young!! I probably now sound like an old person, saying these poor "kids having to start out now" , but it really was a magic time, & a different world compared to now. And yes, I like what you said about the world being close enough to touch.. it was.. everything was more real...and possible..
oliviaD
But we certainly have great memories, and in many ways those wonderful times live on in us. Jimmy is a marvel. He brought out so much emotion and gave a voice to so much that was silent before. Even now all those feelings come back when I hear him.
Yes! I think his voice is just as relevant & important today, and he is better than ever!
Love love LOVE this tune. Takes me straight back to 1984 every time!
Loved him in the 80’s…love him now! Makes me want to buy an airline ticket to Germany in February to hear him sing live!
+Andrea Townsend I come with you... :-) Really need to see him live one time in my life!
Yes….and I speak German!
Absolutely adore and love this man’s voice, utterly perfect Jimmy ♥️
Great voice. It's a travesty that we don't see him any more.
I fought for my life for years to the this tune and I still love it. It makes me see a mountain of sadness blurred by the distance of personal dignity. The loss of the people who I thought were my family turned out to be no loss at all. I just had to re-parent myself to see that. That voice will always give me goosebumps.
Bubblezov Love I hear you!
Well done 👍🏼
You've just written things that happened to me...
Re-parent myself, describes it so well 💚
I remember the skinny Jimmy in the 80s.....he's aged far better then I have.
What a voice!
indeed
Absolutely stunning performance (at any age!)
Man he still got it, been hammering the speakers with these tunes since the early 80's and they still sound amazing. Saw him treat the busker with some backing vocals lol, do a search peeps if you missed it.

His cover of "It Ain't Necessarily So" is another terrific interpretation of a great song from a classic Broadway musical.

waited forever to see this man. Saw him this year worth every minute of the wait. Superbness itself xx
This is an anthem for anyone who feels they don't belong in their family/home town whatever their situation and wherever they are from! Which is why it is so great and stands the test of time!
...and that's why I left....
Remember hearing the original version on the Oxford Roadshow (I think) In the early 80s. It was so different at the time mainly due to Jimmys vocals. Also, was Jimmy the creator of Dad dancing!!
OMG
So much nostalgia
His voice is something else. 🌷
Such a cute little guy with big amazing vocals.
