These videos are invaluable. I was just in a store and these were on clearance. I said self ‘look and see if Jim has a video on this’. I was able to leave them because I have a deer problem, I wanted to put them in an unprotected part of my yard in 7b, plus the disease issues made 3 strikes. Thanks 🪴. One less plant I gotta sneak into the garden.
Hi Mr. Putnam. Thank you for this excellent presentation. I love Indian hawthorns. My large backyard is a Certified Natural Wildlife Habitat, and I’m going to be adding these Indian hawthorns soon to provide plenty of berries for my birds. Your name and face is very familiar to me. Did you ever live and garden in Memphis TN? If so I came for a tour of your beautiful backyard one time many years ago.
thanks, jim. i liked your video and found it informative and concise. you seem incredibly knowledgeable! what is "scale." mine doesn't have leaf spot, but i think the spot i have it in is too wet bc it stopped flowering. after it stops raining today, i'm going to dig mine up to move it to a dryer place. i hope it works :)
What about the purple berries? Are they the same hawthorn berries that are medicinal, for your heart. I just got two today, almost got the pink lady, but these had berries already on them. I want to use the berries .
QUESTION. Please. Thanks i fertilized them and its helping leaf color and leaf spot. They are my hedges and a few got bad leaf spot and winter damage the tops are coming back. Very nicely but the bottom and sides aren’t coming back. Do I need to cut them back? It’s an issue because if I cut those couple back it ruins my porch privacy protection. Because the others are perfect top to bottom. What’s your suggestion please? Its very hard to find 4 foot plants to replace them. I’m Trying to figure out my best option here?
Thanks for the information. Very good video. I recently bought 2 but they both dried out. Their leaves are brown and kind of toasted, I thought it was the sun/hot exposure (around and above the 100 degrees everyday in Texas) so I placed them in a covered patio where they don't receive direct sunlight, but after watching your video I wonder if I should place them on a sunny space? I've also watered them almost daily and have used an atomizer but I could been wrong, do you have any advice? Thank you again!
Are bees attracted to this plant, more so yellow jackets? I was thinking about flanking my front porch with two of these, but I don’t want to attract bees if I can help it, since I’m allergic.
I read that bees like it, if you still want them and want to deter bees and yellow jackets without hurting them, in a spray bottle mix water with peppermint oil, and spray all the base boards and panels of your porch. Wasps, and yellow jackets hate the smell of peppermint and won’t want to come near it. The downfall is, without the wasps and yellow jackets around the more pest insects might take over.
As long as you don’t eat the seed inside the berry it’s ok. The berry itself is ok but seeds inside are like apple seeds, toxic and shouldn’t be eaten.
I have leaf spot on my Snow White Indian Hawthorne. I have been treating them with a recommended fungicide and cannot get rid of it. What is a good replacement for them?
Stephen Quina The best thing you can do is clean up the falling leaves and replace the mulch as well. A multipurpose fungicide can be sprayed when hot and humid conditions are coming back, but cleaning is more important
I was really excited about this shrub until the last couple minutes. I guess if we want to keep the deer away from the rest of our plants the Hawthorne would be a great border along the perimeter of our property. But then we might end up wth an entire herd.
Jim, I love watching your videos. My goto center when I am researching a new addition to our garden.

Very Informative Video
I've got a ton of these all across the east side of my house, and desperately want to cut them back. Like, a LOT. This was hugely helpful--thanks!

Do they have invasive roots? Can I plant them next to my foundation? How tall can they get?

I want to use the berries .

Does it highly scented or just light fragrance. . ? ?
thanks for your vid. 4-6 inches a year of growth? so to get it to 1.5M it will take 10 years? OMG...that long?
Great informative video! I just planted one and was wondering how long it takes for new foliage to start growing once planted?
Can you put Indian hawthorns under Natchez crepe myrtles? Will that be too much shade?

+Karl Leon probably got to wet or to dry. Doubt it was the sun hurting them.
HortTube with Jim Putnam how do u bring back a dry brown dying hawthorn
I just planted some Indian Hawthorn, the leaves are turning brown. Any advice? I'm in Zone 8.
Yes I did fertilize them with osmacoate I scraped a branch and there still green and still have green leaves on them too. What do I do from here .
Mine is turning brown from bottom up and leaves are brown and crispy ! There 2 yrs old and I did osmacote mid summer help
It's possible they were over fertilized. Especially if it has rained a lot. You should be able to remove some of the fertilizer with a rake.
Can Indian Hawthorne trees be purchased or do you have to train a shrub into a tree shape? Thank you
You'd have to trim it into a single trunk form, but even larger ones are inexpensive.

are the berries edible on the snow white indian Hawthorne
+Raquel Navarrete I understand the Chinese use them for something. Not my kinda thing really.

If you can find Eleanor Tabor Indian Hawthorne. They are resistant.
Once your plant has the blackspot, what is the best treatment for it?
