The key lines from 4:23 "Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola" Pretty clever wordplay and at a time quite brave.
😉🎶🔥Oh my, what a cheeky little number!! This created quite a stir, at the time, I can only imagine. The topics we are still talking about to this very day. Talk about ahead of its time. As always, enjoying your take and reaction. Yeah, Top of the Pops was a big deal then. If you made it there, you got it made. Tha Kinks ended up as a very important and influential band, with quite a song catalogue. Terrific song 🎵 choice Chris!! Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕🦂
I'm surprised no one's told you the story of the song. The lead singer and the backup singer are brothers: Ray and Dave Davies. The Kinks were one of the most influential bands of the 60s, along with the Who. The Kinks and their young manager went out drinking one night and their manager got quite drunk (as did the rest) and spent the majority of the night in the club dancing with a cross dresser. The band were having a good time at his expense as he didn't realize it. Once they told him he still didn't care. lol! I can't speak for anywhere else other than CA and England but here in CA no one made a fuss about the lyrics or subject matter. In England they didn't either- just the fact they used a brand name in their song so made them change it. Check out more Kinks if you liked this one. They were far ahead of their time for the 60s and early 70s. Pick any one of about a dozen or so of their songs and you won't go wrong. Great band and love your reaction! We need some ELO too. :)
This song is one that sticks in your head and can't help sing along to! It has a lighthearted way about it, while still rocking it! Great reaction, Hap, enjoyed your take on it!! 💜🎵 interesting choice,Chris!👍
Long long before LGB"T" entered public consciousness. This song was decades ahead of it's time. It's such a timeless, awesome, classic rock song from when I was in high school in the 70's. Sing along!
Haven't even started the video yet and want to say GREAT song choice to whoever requested this! It's already running through my head. (and can't wait to see how Hap reacts) Fun song, when it would come on the radio, to belt out while driving. And yup. Make me feel old. I was 10 when this was done.....
Great song. They're having a lot of fun presenting it to the audience, too. Your convo about tv sets makes me remember we only had a black & white tv. If I wanted to see a show in color I had to go to a friend's house.
I wasn't aware of this group until the initial reaction to The Kinks song "Waterloo Sunset" you did about a year ago. And that's how it is for me with this song. I know this song very well, but never knew the group. A fantastic melody and a certainly recognizable chorus. All I know is that the original lyric "it tastes just like Coca-Cola" had to be changed to "it tastes just like Cherry-Cola" due to commercial references or BBC wouldn't play it. Great reaction HAP and good choice Chris🥰🙋🏻♀
My brother loved that song and he constantly sang it but he was butchering the last verse so when I explained what he was singing and that Lola was a man he didn’t believe me until he listened again. Lol. We still laugh about it 40 years later and I will over remember that day when I heard this song. Thank you.
At the time this song came out people didn't know exactly what the song was about. Yhe Bee Gees performed at the Top of the Pops and thats where Barry Gibb met his 2nd wife. She was a contestant in a pageant.
I've heard this somewhere as well. Catchy tune. So was Lola a man? I looked up the lyrics, "but I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola." Great reaction, Hap, you catching the unplugged piano/keyboard 🎶 ✌️ ☮️ great song choice Chris ❤
I was very fond of the Kinks back in my youth and great you pick this pearl. I'm also fond of new artists pic up the "old" songs. One example is The MonaLisa Twins who has made a splendid version of Lola - Lola - MonaLisa Twins (The Kinks Cover) - they have made a lot of covers while they played in The Cavern Club for 100 Saturdays - try looking for The MonaLisa Twins in the Cavern.
No lip syncing at the beginning where Ray actually sings but there is later. There's no middle finger regarding miming either. TOTP had done their research and viewers had said they preferred listening to the actual record rather than a live performance.
Nope. It was all to do with the Musicians Union, and how much live performance vs. needle time time the BBC were allowed to use. That's why most performers on TOTP mimed to their records
It's a great song. Know it well. Hey man. Courtney Hadwin is back as a Independent artist ! Check here out. She's not that 13 year old rocker we all fell in love but much more now . Shes killing it with her first 2 songs she has released. Check them out. First one was. breakable. And then. That girl doesn't live here anymore. Check them out.
That is 100% lipsync. The real first live verse says Coca-Cola, it's the released recording that had " Cherry-cola " because the BBC had a policy of no product placement and it meant no UK air play.
The Kinks weren't alone in not bothering to plug into amps etc. We all knew that the bands were lip syncing and the bands played up to it - some like Wizzard and Mud didn't even make any attempt at miming and just had fun.
TV, much less a color set, wasn't a luxury in the 70s, at least not in the US. I was 10 when this came out. Yes, this was on the back end of the hippie 'free love' timeline as well as the Beatles, hence the long hair. The thing is that at that time, on both sides of the pond, homosexuality wasn't about, hence "walked like a woman but talked like a man" "boys will be girls and girls will be boys, its a mixed up, shook up world except for lola." What lola was biologically, "im not the most masculine guy, but i know what am, im a man and so is lola."
Amazing to think that sex between me n was legalised in the UK in 1967. Only 3yrs previous to tjs song. When the law was revised it only allowed cosenting adults 21yrs old and over. Now think about this guy only leaving home a week ago. This was definately a more risky tune than most. This song did have issues but not gender ones. In this performance the lyrics was changed from coco cola to cherry cola because they did have permission to use the brand name.
There were live shows back then...some shows just didnt trust the performers to take the risk...also, shows like top of the pops & its U.S. equivalent wanted the perfect, pristine radio/album versions...so, they made ppl lip synch
& this is def live...changed from “coca-cola” to “cherry cola” to avoid a lawsuit for starters, but, yeah, this is totally diff from the album version...not the song, just the sonic soecifics/technicalities of the song
Great band and a wonderful song but the meaning of the song is hardly subtle. How anyone doesn't know what its about after the first verse is a mystery to me.

Lola was glad he's a man too ;)
Not that Ray is gay in any sense of the word. This wasn't a story about himself.
@@m06een00 It was a story about their manager who was also not gay.
This song comes on the radio, volume automatically goes to MAX.
Every single time.
Correct!
Awesome to see the Kinks-one of the most influential bands of all time. Love this tune!
Oh dear, Chris. Those lyrics warrant a much closer attention. 🤣

Id add the small faces and the animals to that list too xx

My fave song ever, the kinks were well established before 1970, very influential band in the 60s xx
The song was about an actual experience one of the band members had.
Long long before LGB"T" entered public consciousness. This song was decades ahead of it's time. It's such a timeless, awesome, classic rock song from when I was in high school in the 70's. Sing along!
I think back then it was still just LGB.
T and Q hadn’t been invited yet.
I think that went completely over his head.

Read it again.
Notice which word was not in my statement.
“Invented.”
Where did that even come from?
This song came out when I was 10 and I didn't understand it then not until I got much older. It was ahead of its time.
Haven't even started the video yet and want to say GREAT song choice to whoever requested this! It's already running through my head. (and can't wait to see how Hap reacts) Fun song, when it would come on the radio, to belt out while driving.

This is also the British version… Believe it or not, the BBC took issue with the first line. “ Coca-cola” had to be changed to “cherry cola”
FYI... This is about a trans woman. Awesome
I had to look up the lyrics to make sure I understood that correctly :)

LOLA IS ALL YOURS... THE SONG TOKE YOU OUT OF ... NEVERMIND, YOU LOVEVE LOLA!
Audio quality and vocals make it kind of hard to pick up the lyrics, which are especially important when it comes to this song.
LOLA is actually my name!
At the time this song came out people didn't know exactly what the song was about. Yhe Bee Gees performed at the Top of the Pops and thats where Barry Gibb met his 2nd wife. She was a contestant in a pageant.

Yep Lola was a transgender man.
And your last name is Davies? That's a funny coincidence

GO BACK TO QUEEN PLEASE ❤
Oh, please give a suggestion, I think he's done most. I did see a documentary on John Deacon last night. I found it interesting.
I don't think he got it at all. Too obsessed with the lip synching thing.
