The last Residential 'Schools' for Natives in Canada closed in 1996. From what I understand the Native children was forcefully taken away from their parents and put into these schools. The last Residential 'Schools' for Natives in Canada closed in 1996. From what I understand the Native children was forcefully taken away from their parents and put into these schools. The abuse and trauma experience by these Native children resulted in many getting involved in taking drugs and drinking alcohol to cope / escape their unresolved traumas.
