What's enlightening here is that Aegon is not depicted having Joffrey's cruelty. He's simply childish and entitled, but does not ask to be ruler nor wants to. He just wants to have the lifestyle, not the responsibility. It's what gets thrust upon him later in the story does his character change.

It doesn't matter Aegon would not challenge... The threat would always be there in Daemon's eyes and, through his influence, in Rhaenyra's... same with Jon discovered to being a Targaryen, two centuries later... He would forever be a threat to Danny's claim! This is the TRUE game of thrones, brothers envying brothers, kin envying kin, all colluding to sit on the throne! I actually blame Viserys, not Otto! Had Viserys been a TRUE king, he would have tapped into the pulse of tradition and realised that even if he felt guilty for neglecting Rhaenyra so long in the obsessive pursuit of a male heir, once Aegon was born, he should have released Rhaenyra of that responsibility solely because it would proactively prevent everything that eventually happened, the clash between his tradition-disruptive choice and secular tradition, personified by Otto, the Hand of THREE kings! So, since the cause of anything is at the very beginning of it, I blame Viserys for succumbing to his fatherly remorse and completely failing to accept and therefore act on the growing feuds between both sides of her house, especially Daemon's vulturing over Rhaneyra! Viserys was a negligent father, a negligent king and THAT is what usually happens with PACIFISTS, they end up doing more harm than good! All would have been prevented by him having a frank, thoughtful talk with Rhaenyra after Aegon was born and was deemed healthy, and convincing her about the good of the realm being the MAINTENANCE OF TRADITION to prevent unnecessary and avoidable problems! THAT is what a TRUE, WISE king would do, do everything in his power to secure a peaceful succession, use his power to defuse those squabbles than ended up CAUSING the ACTUAL WAR, and do everything in his power to keep his family united, which he never did, being downright and willingly oblivious to it! You do not let feuds grow in your family, you squash them when they are still little! Had Viserys accepted the reality of Rhaneyra's bastards, he would have talked to Aemond and prevent their rivalry from escalating to losing body parts AND ultimately kinslaying!

"Rhaenyra wouldn't have killed Aegon". The fact is, it's not that simple.
Rhaenyra lives in a hostile environment. The Red Keep is a pit of snakes. The realm as a whole mistrusts women and is reluctant to accept them as rulers (yeah, there are exceptions like lady Arryn in the Vale, but they are just that: exceptions). Rhaenys, who by all accounts was more charismatic and intelligent than Viserys, and who was the daughter of the eldest son, was passed over precisely because she was a woman. Men in the Seven Kingdoms believe that power is their duty and privilege, and theirs alone. They could accept Rhaenyra when she was the king's only child; but the fact that she'll get the throne even with two living brothers is not just weird: it's an insult to the moral and social order these Lords know and enforce, a threat to the stability of their own houses (if a woman can inherit the Iron throne, will their own daughters keep silent and watch younger brothers get land and titles that could be theirs?).
Add to that the fact that Rhaenyra had children out of wedlock, something that is considered unacceptable for a woman. It's an open secret that one day an illegitimate child will sit the Iron Throne. Again, this is an insult to the moral code of that society. In the eyes of the Lords, not only is the (future) queen a woman: she's also the worst kind of woman, one who has no decency and respect.
Against this backdrop, Rhaenyra becomes queen. She is watched closely. Lords question every move she makes. If she yields, that's proof of her weakness as a woman. If she stands her ground, that's proof that, as a woman, she's unreasonable and spoiled. Soon, Lords start to question whether she's fit to rule. Maybe she should be replaced by a man, however young. But her own sons are bastards, the whole realm knows (or at least suspects) that. Who should the Lords turn to? And the answer is clear: Aegon. Aegon is a man & his parentage cannot be questioned. By the laws of Gods and men, HE should be the king of the Seven Kingdoms.
And just like that, Aegon becomes a mortal danger to Rhaenyra. Her throne, her power, her safety and that of her immediate family are threatened by the fact that the lords of the seven kingdoms will never fully accept her as a queen as long as they have a viable alternative. What is she to do? When was she secure in her inheritance? When there was no alternative. When she was the only child of Viserys - or at least, his eldest daughter (notice that Alicent never mentions Halaena. She wouldn't be a threat to Rhaenyra).
As modern readers/show watchers, we might not realize this. But Otto and (now) Alicent do. And I don't blame her for being terrified for her son. Viserys put her in a terrible position. He is a good man, and tends to forget not everyone else is as good.

    • @gerstein03
      @gerstein03 2 роки тому +56

@@camillaallegrucci1311 that's a hell of a lot of speculation. The realm can suspect Rhaenyra's children as bastards all they like but unless someone with actual authority over her ie Visarys declares them as bastards it doesn't really matter. The people with the most power get to decide what's true. If the heir to the throne says "these children are my trueborn heirs" then they are the trueborn heirs whether it's actually true or not. Besides they are not the king. Visarys is and like Daemon said, the king's word is law. They all swore allegiance to Rhaenyra. They can bitch and moan all they like but the king said Rhaenyra will rule and all of the lords agreed. So Rhaenyra has no reason to kill Aegon so long as Aegon doesn't challenge the claim. Because he is not the challenge. The king's word is law and the king is saying Rhaenyra is heir and these allegations are nothing more than gossip. So what the griping lords think really doesn't matter. Rhaenyra is also not a cruel monster at this point who would murder her own brothers. She was willing to resolve it with diplomacy until Aemon killed her son

It’s interesting the contrast of mothers in this episode.
    Rhaenyra, Laena, and Alicent.
Alicent is protective of her children but not very affectionate. She wants them to know their place and displays deep paranoia.
It’s like in the earlier episodes when she’s rocking her babes, she’s doing what she’s supposed to do, maybe even more than what’s expected since she doesn’t leave them with a nurse, but she’s vacant, disassociated from it all.
In her scene with Helaena she seems to be half listening and then Aemond comes in after the episode with the pig. This is when she’s the most direct.
Rhaenyra is all about the touch, the gentle looks, the caresses. She smiles at Joffrey constantly despite being in deep pain. Her children are her great love, she’s protective as well but handles her fear differently. She doesn’t show it to her children, her fear is meant to be a secret shielded from her children.
Laena doesn’t have the same fears. She longs for home. She touches and caresses her children as well, assuages their fears. She ultimately dies with her child, greeting death by choice. She leaves her children in the hands of their father, hoping they’ll go home unlike her.
it’s also important to note the fathers in each scenario. Viserys was not Alicent’s choice, Harwin is Rhaenyra’s choice yet unsuitable and dangerous, and while Daemon cares for Laena, she wasn’t HIS first choice, yet they have the most solid relationship. Daemon is also dismissive of his younger daughter, possibly bc she has yet to become a dragon rider.

Not sure if you've read the books, but there, things are slightly different.
Laena and him loved each other and had quite the passionate relationship.
He seems to have genuinely adored her, whereas in the show, there's this sort of gloom over their union. As if he had married her out of circumstance, as opposed to the fiery desire he had for her in the source material.
And there, he was quite a loving, doting father on her daughters, both of them. Whereas in the show, he seems to be kind of distant.
All in all, Daemon is depicted in a better light on Fire and Blood than on the show. He's shown as having a blissful, happy life there with Laena and his daughters, as opposed to the melancholy he feels here.
In the books, Laena also dies in Driftmark, in her father's island.
And before dying, she takes one last ride on Vaghar.

Gotta consider the medieval context where some of the possibilities she's paranoid about are likely. Lingering conflicting claims always cause problems. Sure Aegon is unwilling but what if his brothers or any of their descendants aren't? They look at the precedents of the past and say they are the true kings? Just by existing they are a rally point for all of the discontented. Rhaenyra would be stupid not to deal with 3 siblings who arguably have a better claim, and if she can't see it then those who invested in her (her supporters) will, especially because the unprecedented nature of her claim and the illegitimacy of her children. Her siblings definitely have a better claim than her bastards and if she wants to protect her frauds she should remove the legitimate claimants. A lot of people are saying Rhaeynyra likely won't kill Aegon but I can see why the Hightowers are so fearful of it. Primarily, they feel uncertain about what type of ruler Rhaenyra would be if she claimed the throne with the rumours floating around about her bastard sons. It's interesting how viewers will try to argue in Rhaenyra's favour saying that she won't likely take that path but if we were all in Alicent's position, how can you be sure? And if you can't be sure, wouldn't you try to secure your own power and position rather than (as Otto said) bank on the fact that Rhaenyra won't execute your children? It's clear that the Hightowers are acting based on their fear (and yes, better decisions could have been made, as always with anything) but it's understandable nonetheless.

Because she is a woman and not ever before has a woman inherit ahead of males in the realm not to mention her sons are bastards and her descendants would be Velaryons not Targaryens (surname is inherited by your father). On top of it all, no matter who opposed her (all kings and queens have oppositors or people displeased) her brothers would be used as a treat to depose her and put them instead. They will be a constant threat to her power. 3 male brothers! All with desires to also be made Kings because why would they have to have a female ruler when in the past males inherited ahead of them? So once she executed them they would no longer cause a threat to her own claim and people liking her or not would have to stick with her (unless she really messes things up and her son or another dynasty is put in place).
