- Norwich is a fine city in Norfolk England. We take a walking tour through the city centre, from Norwich Castle, City Hall and Norwich Market to Elm Hill, Pottergate and more.
Also watch our tour of nearby Cromer 👉🏻 • CROMER | Is Cromer in ...
Norwich City Centre is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in England. It's Medieval streets and buildings are stunning and it's stuffed full of landmarks, famous buildings and tourist attractions tempting people to travel from all over the world to see it.
We begin this Norwich tour at Norwich Castle and Castle Gardens where we find Castle Quarter Shopping Centre nestled into the gardens.
From here we walk over to Castle Meadow and into the city centre streets via Red Lion Street and Haymarket.
As we pass Hay Hill we see St Peter Mancroft church and then up to The Forum on Millenium Plain, before coming onto St Peters Street. Here we stand outside Norwich City Hall before heading into the fantastic Norwich Open Air Market. This place is great and full of places to eat and drink at the various food places.
From Gentlemans Walk we head down to the famous Norwich Elm Hill which is just stunningly beautiful. The historic medieval streets of Elm Hill Norwich are amazing and so well preserved. This really is a fine city of beautiful buidlings.
From Elm Hill we head down to Fye Bridge which used to be where the ducking stool would have been in Medieval Norwich City Centre.
We come back up Elm Hill and onto Pottergate, Charing Cross and some of the little lanes like Upper Goat Lane and Lower Goat Lane, packed with shops, restaurants, hotels and pubs.
Our walking tour of Norwich ends at Norwich Guildhall on Guildhall Hill.
Norwich is the traditional capital city of East Anglia. The City Centre here is thriving and vibrant with lots of shopping and bars and restaurants to have a great day out.
Norwich City Hall overlooks the amazing Norwich Market which has a grid like layout of stalls and market stalls packed with food and drink and things to buy if you're shopping in Norwich.
Norwich is well known for Colmans Mustard, Alan Partridge, Norwich City Football Club, Delia Smith and more. In this video we try and show Norwich off at it's very best to try and tempt visitors, tourists and people to the city to see what Norwich is like for themselves.
Whether it's visiting the tourist attractions here, eating or drinking or doing some high street shopping then Norwich is a fine city to visit for sure. Come and explore!
I hope you enjoy this tour of Norwich UK. If so please subscribe to see where I go next!

Norwich born and bred and after working all over the uk, there’s no other City like it imho. It’s got everything anyone would need/want. And you missed so much more.. Royal Arcade, Assembly House, Theatre Royal, Chapelfield Gardens, The Secret Gardens, Cathederal Close and there’s probably a video in itself of the Riverside walk! Great video though and would love to see you come back again and do another one on the things I’ve mentioned. Thanks for visiting 👍
Inbread
I agree with you my friend, I'm a Northerner and I adore Norfolk as a county, Norwich is very special.
Spot on Steve, live in Thorpe st andrew myself, love this area and city we call home. I wouldn’t change it for any other, so many more if these videos could be made for the places that were missed, I feel people are missing out on a lot!!
Princes Street to Tombland, Cathedral Close, Maid's Head, Adam & Eve, the Train Station, Bank Plain, Cow Tower, St Giles ...so, so much more to Norwich than this. :)
Can’t forget about ketts hill, brilliant view at night
Lived in Norwich for a year and flipping loved it. So much so that I now support the football team. Beautiful city and criminally underrated
Norwich is where my ancestor John Wells was born and lived before immigrating to Maryland USA in 1634. Really enjoyed this video -- he may have walked those cobbled streets!
Oh yes. Am sure he would have!
Great place
He didn't have a limp by any chance 😂
you are a saint. i was born there 70 plus yrs ago ( dont live there now ) but i forgot how beautiful it was. brought a tear to my old eyes. luv you.
Thank you so much John.
I love this city now. It was my first time wandering the place and wow! such beauty
As an American Airman Stationed RAF Sculthorpe in 1954 I went to Norwich every Weekend to go to the flicks and Sampson & Hercules and the American Club for 42 months. I loved it.
Mostly Prince of Whales Road. Have a photo of myself taken by a roving Street
Photographer at the Castle News Stand next to the post office.
My father was a mp base at sculthorpe in the 50s. His name was Sargent Earl Bass.
I've lived near Norwich for 35 years and I'm still discovering beautiful little spots. The Plantation Garden on Earlham Road springs to mind - it's a Grade II English Heritage listed garden hidden away very close to the city centre and a proper gem, and I had no idea it was there until a couple of years ago!
I once took a wherry tour from the Ribs of Beef on Fye Bridge along the Wensum to Pull's Ferry and back; that's a fantastic way to see a completely different view of the city.
Fantastic stuff thank you for the info! 👍👍❤️
Same. The operative word being 'near', in my case anyway. And yes. I do agree on Plantation garden. I first went there back in the 70s. Must go again very soon !
Oh the Plantation Garden! Thank you for reminding me about it! I visited on a school trip as a child, and now the memories are flooding back! Simpler times! Thank you!
WE We were able to attend our granddaughter’s rehearsal picnic at the Plantation Gardens. What a lovely day it was!
My husband and I visited Norwich for our granddaughter’s wedding a couple weeks ago at Dragon Hall. We stayed in Elm Hill. We loved the city and walked everywhere.
I have got to vote for Norwich - I have lived nearby for nearly 15 years and had a chance to show some friends around the other day - boy was Norwich (and the people) on good form.! I hope the local council step back from what they are doing to try and destroy the place to provide facilities which are not needed or liked and cost an armful of money with no discernible (or measurable) improvements. A really, really nice city and worth a look. The centre shopping area is just hanging on in there, but many of the shops (like other High streets) are fast disappearing. I hope Norwich can arrest this decline. This is a great video - well done.
My late husband, our two young children and I lived in Norwich for two years 22 years ago. Thank you for this. It’s brought back bitter sweet memories ❤️
You're welcome -thanks for watching my channel. It means a lot to me.
It’s a 10 from me. I’ve never been to Norwich and it is nothing like I imagined, what a beautiful city it is. .it’s got everything, lots of shops, beautiful old buildings, a lovely atmosphere. I can see why you felt good while you were there…and Elm Hill was beautiful I liked the different coloured buildings and the cobbles, it’s good seeing these places still exist, it’s rare to see a medieval street like this still around. Well I’ve got to honest and say there aren’t many things on tv that I’m fussed about watching, I’d rather come on You tube and watch your vids. This one has been great, Thank you for doing all the walking and filming, it’s been lovely to watch. You’ve done a great job on this one, you ought to work for the tourist board 😂😂 ive never had so many places I’d like to now visit 😂
Thats so lovely of you to say - thank you so much!
My favourite City ❤ Everything you need for today without destroying the history - and Norfolk people are so friendly.
Bang on!
Norwich used to be the most important city after London. That was mainly down the wool trade that was thriving at the time.
Since then in terms of size, it has dropped down the list. But, do you know what I wouldn't have it any other way, From our castle, 2 cathedrals, Norwich Lanes, Gaol Hall, The Forum, Elm Hill, The riverside walk between Pauls Ferry and Cow Tower then on to Fye Bridge is stunning. All of our churches, pubs eating places, Norwich Market which is the oldest surviving market in the UK over 800 years old.
So many more hidden gems that I could mention. It is so nice to see my fine city of Norwich filmed in a positive light.
Elm Hill has also been used in many Hollywood films Stardust with Michelle Pfifer being one.
I've been obsessed with Norfolk recently & I still can't believe that I've managed to get to my 40's having never been to the area. Norwich is beautiful! I really do need to make it a priority to have a day trip here in the summer. Thank you for sharing this lovely video. Your camera footage is really excellent quality x
You will definitely need more than a day Rosie. What you see on the video is just a small part of Norwich city centre. Hope you make it one day❤
Looked absolutely majestic to me, Gimbal Walk! All in all a job well done. I think you caught a lovely Summer’s day and some lovely moments. Almost seemed like the planets aligned at some moments for you. Great to see the vast majority of lovely positive comments. Sadly, a typical few out there that want to let their inner hurt spill out with indiscriminate criticism. I can only apologise for them.
Hey, I would certainly echo the others with regards to the cathedral. Once you enter the Cathedral close, it is a whole different feel to what you have already identified as an eclectic and cosmopolitan mix. Beyond those walls it’s like a Country village in the middle of a city. I’m sure you will find the contrast fascinating. There is also a river walk around there that is pretty.
As as idea for a part two, perhaps also wait the castle project to complete. I’m told that on its completion you will freely be able to walk the battlements of the castle. May be worth seeking their permission to use your camera up there. From experience I can tell you some of the views up there are worthwhile indeed.
Also, Princes Street at the top of Elm Hill is pretty to walk along and at the bottom of it is Tombland, the old Saxon marketplace area outside the Cathedral gates.
Really well done though for one that is unfamiliar and keep it up👍🏻
I very much enjoyed your walking tour. Back in the 1960’s from 61/64 I was a young American stationed at RAF Lakenheath, in Suffolk. I visited and dated a few British young ladies back then, long before there was a Gentleman’s Walk, and the cobble stone streets. I was pleased that your walk took the viewers up
Lobster Lane. There back then I would attend the American Club, actually park my American car on the Lane as many cars did back then. If I had it to do over again, I would have taken in more of the local shops and walk a-bouts. Thanks Again, Tom from Illinois USA
What a delightful city. The Planners seemed to get the balance between old and new architecture, it feels like a harmonious place, no wonder the people are happy there. Once again your love of what you do shows through in your videos. Thank you 👏👏👏💜
I totally agree!
We have our share of post-war concrete - Norwich was hit fairly hard in the Baedeker raids. But those buildings are aging out and newer development is a bit more sympathetic, so I think the city gets more beautiful all the time.
I lived here in the 70s, Head in the Clouds on Pottergate has been there many years. Excellent video!
Many thanks!
I live in Norwich and it is a beautiful place with some amazing places to visit. I love living here plus it’s also so close to some amazing countryside.
Well said - it's amazing!
Hi! Can you tell me how is the weather? In all seasons pls😇
@@ovidiu9120 The Weather in Norwich is milder than most of the UK.
Favourite spot: the coloured houses by the river. Also, it reminds me of Burano in Italy! Thanks so much for the tour :)
Oooh yes - lovely by the river.
Not been to Burano but will have a nosey at it now on google!
Have a great weekend!
What a beautiful and historic City we have here in Norwich, we have
so many historic buildings, not many if any can compare with Norwich, I was disappointed you didn't go down two of our most historic streets, Prince of Wales rd and Magdalen street, but you did a great job, I look forward to following your tours of our great country's City's !
Too bad that he’s missing out Anglia Square I guess.
A great tour Neil, we plan to go to Norwich tomorrow for a wander and a bit of filming. We will definitely be searching out Elm Hill as we have not been to that part before. Have a good day - Nettie
It looks amazing. 10 out of 10 from me. We’ve just been looking at booking a few days break on the outskirts of Norwich. Thank you.
You’re welcome - it’s lovely isn’t it
Looks like this was a Sunday having the market being closed
@@anthonyalessi3167 Think it was a Wednesday afternoon from what I remember
@@GimbalWalkTV great video. I live in Norwich and thank you for visiting us.
I've lived in Norwich all my life and it's a great place to live! I enjoyed your tour but thought it such a pity you did not venture a little further up the road from Elm Hill to show your viewers the jewel in the crown, our wonderful cathedral! Maybe another short walk is required!
Most definitely
This is the first of many
St Benedicts and the Cathedral were missing too
But don't you think cathedrals are unimportant nowadays? Just wondering...
I'm extremely lucky to live in this fine city. It has all the facilities a city can offer but still remains a small and friendly place
Agreed - amazing place
Elm Hill I remember! Good to see it again. Thanks for the tour.
Wow 9/10 such a pretty place and the buildings are amazing, so well kept and looked after. I think you did a great job with the walk around too, exploring all the nooks and crannies of the place. Happy walking :)
Thank you very much. Thought I'd try taking my time a bit on this one!
Thank you🙏
Beautiful, peaceful and relaxing city.
Thanks Alex ❤️❤️
I was been in Norwich 1998-2001, There's my favourite city,so much remember,,And I very thankful for this video to make me need go back again one day a time.
Love Norwich. Used to live in great Yarmouth for a while. Miss Norfolk
It’s such a great part of the world isn’t it
Beautiful Norwich ❤
Beautifully film and covered a lot of old Norwich, notice you doubled back a few times, surprised you missed the cathedral and its amazing cathedral close, but then time is a major factor. Norwich has just been name behind Edinburgh as the best city to bring up a family. Hope you come back and film the other side of the city.
Absolutely super - this video took me to places I didn't know existed and I have been to the City many times.
My home now for over 50 years it is a fine city and I'm proud to call it home
Norwich is a great city to visit including the cathedral and castle. I’ve been to Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle and I grew up near Norwich.
Agreed!
Wow never been to Norwich it looks so nice beautiful old buildings lovely thanks for great walk tour of Norwich 👍
Thank you such a lovely place
Hey! Thanks for the video :) I lived in Norwich for a year back in 2013-2014! Glad to be able to see the city again! I used to walk everywhere in the city! I so remember this tree in the minute 21:00! I remember thinking to myself wow this tree must be really old and how big is it! I even remember touching it haha! I’m from Brazil and I remember thinking to myself wow this tree is really big indeed and it’s so cool they preserved it right in the middle of the street and the houses! Wow! Memories.. when I go back to the UK I do intend to visit Norwich again! I see many things do still looks exactly the same! Might be cool to go back after this whole pandemic thing!
I've lived in Norwich all my life and love it. When you got to the bridge you could've walked down past the old merchant houses along the riverside and you'd have arrived at the cathedral with its massive tall spire and then could've gone on to see the cathedral close and then onto Pulls Ferry. You also missed the Royal Arcade (off Gentleman's Walk) which is in an art deco style and very beautiful. Elm Hill looked lush. Lovely walk, thanks for enjoying Norwich or Narj as we pronounce it around here :)
Thank you so much - I'm returning soon to film the bits I missed so that's very useful for me!
What a lovely place it’s a definite 10 from me. Some great buildings and so clean thanks for the tour so keep on walking 🚶🏻👍❤️
Thank you, I will
I loved your video. I was born there 78 years ago. 33 Rope Makers Row. I was told that it was a nursing home at that time. I came to America When I was a year old. I must visit while I still can. Thank you.
Thank you for the post. I was an art student in Norwich in the late 70s, I wish I still lived there !
It's lovely isn't it!

"no goats" from that random passerby as we stroll through Lower Goat Lane 🤣 I really enjoyed this video, almost needed it as I grew up in Norwich and haven't been back for a while so it's lovely to see it in such splendor 😊

Wonderful Walk around This Fine City, I first travelled to Norwich One of my first customers was Curls Department Store , My contact there was a Mrs Sparrow that was Fifty Three years ago in 1970. Also Walter Cary's Flower Stall, Then Donald Cary who has since retired and Stephen is now in charge, Marks out of Ten I think it would it nearer Twenty, Many Thanks.
Such an amazing city isn't it - it has a bit of everything and some amazing history too!
Somewhere here there’s an ancient gateway in what’s left of the Medieval town wall. I remember that to. You haven’t found it yet.
Fabulous video. Thanks 🙌🏼
Thank you too!
Did i miss Tomb Land and Norwich School ( Nelson's School ) plus the Cathedral?. Riverside Walk.. Great Video.. Thank You.
Thanks Rose
No but you got to see Elm Hill and the market twice!
@@Alcofrolicchap Too right too - great parts of the city!
Ill be retiring to Norwich soon. Looks like I made the right choice!
OH yes definitely!
You need to visit Lavenham in Suffolk if you want old buildings
Already did Maurice - it's on my channel
What a place that is eh!
എന്റെ മോൻ താമസിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലം. എനിക്ക് ഒത്തിരി ഇഷ്ടം ആയി 👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏻🙏🏻
I thoroughly enjoyed that walk around the city where I live. It is true that when you live somewhere you take it for granted, I wonder if you had a chance to look at either of the 2 cathedrals whilst you were in Norwich. The Anglican cathedral is over 900 years old and very beautiful, On a warm day I used to like to go and sit in the cathedral grounds to read a book it always felt very peaceful. I am glad that you liked the "Fine City" of Norwich.
I love it!
Didn’t have time to check out the cathedrals on this trip but that gives me another reason to go back
Thanks
Thank you so much Mervin - that is really kind of you and much appreciated ❤️
You might like to read up on the history of the Ethelbert Gate. It’s commemorative of a major conflict between the Monks of the Church & the townsfolk. It’s construction was ordered by Henry III as punishment for the townspeople’s retaliation against the Monks. Fascinating bit of history.
Oooh yes will have a read on that!
Well dialected for Norwich.
I live in Norwich ... The first Royal Mail, Post Codes were introduced in the City, Fun Facto. 35.25 secs in & I am Loving this but there is so much more. And Defo a Great Day to have a Walk. Yes the Cathederal 2nd highest in the country with Peregrine Falcons ( I hope they haven't left) even with the immence changes it still is a Fine City''
Most definitely a fine city!
I have lived her for all my life and I can tell you that Norwich is a beautiful city and I dont know why its getting so much hate.
Great great city
Fantastic video and in one of my favourite cities in the UK. I’m so lucky it’s not too far away from me 😊
Thanks Daniel - it's such a great place isn't it
nice walk! but yet still so much missing from the video! maybe good reason to come back and do a re-take
Absolutely!
Was my first time wandering round so got a bit lost!
A great & fantastic video of NORWICH UK - The Ultimate Norwich City Tour [What's it REALLY like in Norfolk's Fine City?]❤❤❤❤
Many thanks!
would have loved to have seen inside the bookshops.
Will try next time
Maybe if you do another you could also visit the Cathedral close and the Adam and Eve pub also the river walk
Definitely
Good work, but very surprised you didn’t include the best part of the city - the cathedral! Also, Chapelfield is a massive part of the city these days. Good work as an outsider though.
I’m not from Norwich so was trying to find my way round the best Incould
@@GimbalWalkTV you actually took a very good route, and as a street photographer myself, this is the route I often take. When getting to the bottom of Elm Hill, if you would have turned right, you walk up Tombland and can see the Cathedral and walk around it and the grounds. Literally a few hundred meters from it when exiting the bottom of Elm Hill. One for the future, if you decide to re-visit. Keep up the good
work though.
@@leemjfreeman9856 Ah that info is perfect thank you so much! When I got home from Norwich I saw that there was a tombland but had no idea what it was or whereabouts it is!
You were right by the cathedral and completely turned away from it 😅
Oh no! 🤣🤣
@@GimbalWalkTV when you turned back from the bridge and turned right back down Elm Hill, you should have carried on straight instead - 30 seconds later you would have hit Tombland and the cathedral, the maids head hotel from the 12th century and 2 historic gates leading to the cathedral gardens
At 6 minutes in you totally missed the amazing Pret A Manger building on your right!
Ah apologies
looks amazing!!
Love from India❤
Great city and some fantastic hostelries, which I hope have survived COVID for when I get a chance to visit again!
Definitely
Seems it’s the Ethelbert Gate I’m remembering.
Born and bred Norwich boy, can’t beat the place, prince of wales let’s it right down though
Oh no!
Great Video ,So much to see and do
So true- thanks Peter
Beautiful video , like it so much.
Thank you so much - that means a lot to me x
I live in ormesby and spend a lot of time in Norwich I’ve been to all of our city’s and Norwich is up at the top with Durham

I love the audio picking up the chitter chatter and laughing of the passersby helps give you a feeling you’re there 👍
@@squidgy6930 Definitely. I'm trying to catch audio like that as much as possible whenever wind noise or copyright music isn't around

Its really immersive and gives a great account of the city
