Your review made me fall in love with the r4. Thanks for the hard work help alot to hear a real opinion from a reviewer know they aren't somewhat in the pocket keep it up
Congrats on the purchase! Just a heads up: Set TCC to 5 or 10 in BIOS, and disable the optimus/hybrid graphics in BIOS too. Makes all the difference. Another thing to note, when the battery is fully charged and you're still plugged in, the laptop will use battery power instead of the charger /mains, so you'll drop performance massively. For now I make sure I have very low battery first, then stick the charger in and game. Once it hits 100% perf will drop again. I've reached out to alienware today and they'll let me know tomorrow what I can do about it. Hopefully they give a fix.

@@JohnSmith-um7iy So I’ve had the laptop for a bit, but haven’t been using it too much as I’ve been completing deferrals. But it seems to be doing ok, I’ve been checking and in most games that I’ve played such as prey and dishonored 2 (with max settings), I’ve been reaching somewhere around the 80c mark. Thanks for the "consumer" review. Just one thing - in regards to the back-lighting, it looks like the secondary characters are not backlit (like the "?", for example, or the "@", "$", "%" etc etc etc).
May I seek your advise? Im kind of stuck in between deciding wheater to get the M15 R5 or the X15...which is a better choice? Is it worth to pay extra for the new flagship X15?
The only X series I like is the X17. The X15 cut too many corners. Plus, if you go to Dell’s Outlet site you can save money on a refurbished R5 model. If you call or chat with them, the may give you at least 5% more off.
@@ProTechShawn in fact i managed to get slightly more than 5% off for the M15 R5 but is brand new. However, it is just the entry level specs (165 hz screen, ryzen 7 cpu, 3060 graphic card) hence is pretty basic. Yeah.. agreed that X17 is indeed the best choice however, it is just too big n heavy for me. Plus X17 had burst my budget :)
Been thinking of getting this or a razer blade 15. I like the style/look of the razer blade more but I have heard it gets too hot which makes me want to get this, plus the upgradability of the alienware sounds nice. It would be awesome if you did a video comparing the razer blade laptop to the alienware ones.
I got this one over the Razer Blade because of the constant comments of how hot to the touch it is on so many reviews. My R5 comes in at the end of the month.
I think I’m in the same situation as you folks. I initially really wanted the blade too, and ended up landing on this, mine is about 2 weeks out. The screen, body, and cherry keyboard sold me. But… that -10% dip on performance on their 3070 concerns me.. and the thermals. I am considering canceling in favor of the zephyrus but… I’m unsure, I really like the overall design of this laptop. The fact that I can put it on igpu and get 6 or 7 hours out of it and use it for work as well.. man .. ; ; How do you folks feel about it? I think I’m going to keep my order live .
@@Coffeebeamz yep those sold me as well. I also was scared away from Razer because so many people stated that their customer service was basically non existent. At least with Dell, I can easily return the R5 if I hate it.
I'm upgrading to this m15r5 from a maxed out 2019 Razer Blade 15 Advanced. I purchased the Razer Blade October 2020, it's been just over half a year. The battery has started to bulge from all the heat before the battery capacity has even started to wear down. I have repasted the cpu/gpu which improved my thermal throttle frequency, however the laptop still runs extremely hot when playing games. Unless you severely limit the CPU performance the palm rest will be uncomfortably hot, and the area above the function keys will be burning. The hinge on mine also creaks when the laptop is hot. If you are a light gamer few hours a week, or just esports titles the Razer Blade is a really nice package. But if you intend to run the machine 100% for long durations whether for work or games I recommend you go elsewhere.
@@Coffeebeamz I just purchased one of these, last year I bought a ROG zephyrus M and after owning it for a year it melted components on the motherboard and I had no idea until it was too late. Anyways I’m giving Alienware a shot instead this time.
At the price you paid, makes sense. I paid less than $2k (CAD) after tax and cash back though I went with the 5800H and QHD display instead (but still 3070 and mechanical keyboard). Gotta use that e-mail sign-up and Rakuten!

Out of all of the laptops I've reviewed this year, I have to hand that to the Lenovo Legion 5. I think you can save yourself a few hundred bucks and get a higher powered 3070 than what's in the R5. Or, you can keep checking Dell's Outlet site to see when those refurbished R4's start showing up.
This laptop is a nightmare. It's gimped through and through, and I received better gaming performance from an HP Omen 15 with 6 core intel and 3070 MaxQ variant. This is compared to an M15 R5 5900 HX & MaxP 3070! Dell f****** us all. PS the QHD screen is beautiful though lol
Dell released a vbios update, and it still only runs at 115w. They gave the cores, but not the performance we are actually supposed to be getting. the R5 is NOT worth the money!
@@timvincent9396I agree that they gimped it vs the Intel model. The M17 R4 I had just had a better keyboard. The performance is great though for gaming in 1440p.... but its nowhere near this 240hz.
It shows on their website. It keeps changing. As of right now it says will arrive by August 3rd if using express shipping. It isn't even July yet. Over 6 weeks to ship.
Like your review, I know you put effort into it to express your thought. Anyway, I agree with you, this thing looks way too overpriced when compared to Legion 5 Pro. It's a shame that Dell took many good things from M15 (R4), just to push people to buy X15 (Cooling, TGP, Speaker, etc).
for some reason I dont feel confident with mine.. my R5 is giving me 2:30 hr out battery and Keyboard lights acts weird sometimes,, and it is hell a heavy and its always around 60 degree temp even on normal usage

And i figured this gpu problem when i opened DaVinci resolve application as it straight forward told me that i am not using gpu. On top of it, some keys on my keyboard changes color after coming back from sleep. I just love alienware look and material but with this they ruined my experience. how does the pc run playing a game like war thunder? im currently playing war thunder on a MacBook Pro barely getting 40 fps on the lowest graphics and super low resolution I would at least want to run med graphics if possible
I don't have that game, but if it's somewhat playable on a Mac @ 40fps, you'd be totally fine with this one. I had more frames playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on an ASUS G14 with an RTX 2060 than my 16" Macbook Pro.

The screen, body, and cherry keyboard sold me. But… that -10% dip on performance on their 3070 concerns me.. and the thermals. I am considering canceling in favor of the zephyrus but… I’m unsure, I really like the overall design of this laptop. The fact that I can put it on igpu and get 6 or 7 hours out of it and use it for work as well.. man .. ; ;
How do you folks feel about it?
Should I buy a Msi ge66 or an Alienware m15 r5?
My personal choice would be the GE66.
Love the review man good shit, ordered mine same spec for $2200CAD so hopefully ill get some bang for my buck 👌
Latest Razer? Or latest Alienware? What's your opinion overall between the two?
Razers are too overpriced for what you get compared to not just Alienware, but any other laptop manufacturer.
The X15 series has soldered RAM while the X17s will have upgradable RAM, so another strike for the X series...
no it doesn't both have upgradable rams.
@@kinglygamingpro1749 it does
@@yujonpradhananga9999 well thats a shame i was hoping to get x15. But nvm
At the price you paid, makes sense. I paid less than $2k (CAD) after tax and cash back though I went with the 5800H and QHD display instead (but still 3070 and mechanical keyboard). Gotta use that e-mail sign-up and Rakuten!
I been too lazy. Lol. With as much stuff as I buy, I’d probably be making a killing.
I have the QHD version and it came 3 weeks early.
Nice. I ordered the QHD version but it's saying it'll arrive on August 6th. Hoping mine comes 3 weeks early.
@@Jimster481 No worries. Thank you for the tip.. Do you have the ryzen 9 or 7? I chose ryzen 9. I figured best to go big or go home 😁
Thoughts on the secondary functions not being lit up?
I hate it.
During the gaming test, was it plugged in?
Yes.
Hey man I know there is a small chance of you seeing this comment and I have recently purchased this computer but I don't know what are the best settings for the command center. I want to get the most out of the computer for gaming but I don't know how please help me it would mean alot keep up the great work
Hi dtech what gaming laptop to go for max 2500$ I’m looking at the r5 3070 model. Any suggestions
Hey Bro, whats your opinion on the X17 or x15? should i get the x17 UHD? or should i get the x15 QHD?
x15 is a gimped machine. bad cooling, slim and light design, soldered components, bad tdp gpu. what were they thinking
@@Eaterofeaterofpies what about the x17?
Good review bro. Your videos inspired me to get the R4
Best Buy had it on one day sale $1499. I think that’s a good deal!
I really need to know this. Is the M15 R5 or the X15 able to handle the heat better?
Even though the X15 is promoted to have newer cooling, my experience with the R5 was cooler probably because of the efficiency of the Ryzen chip.
You are one of the best youtuber man! Subbed !!!
Thanks for the sub!
I agree. It does seem like they knocked it down a tier from what it used to be.
@@timvincent9396I agree that they gimped it vs the Intel model. The M17 R4 I had just had a better keyboard. The performance is great though for gaming in 1440p.... but its nowhere near this 240hz.
Dope review. Everything was on point... except for "re-sick-ulous" 😆
I'm planing on buying the QHD model, how much was the estimated wait time for that one?
Over a month.
It shows on their website. It keeps changing. As of right now it says will arrive by August 3rd if using express shipping. It isn't even July yet. Over 6 weeks to ship.
I ended up ordering the G15 ryzen edition with 3060 since it has the same specs as the m15 but way cheaper, specially with the discount it was at
Like your review, I know you put effort into it to express your thought.
Yea it is at 60C even in normal usage.... the thing is that the chassis itself gets hot. The fan profiles are horrible
@@Jimster481 i literally placed an order for x15 an hour ago. I think dell didn't wanted to use ryzen willingly as sometimes my gpu dosent start. I am playing control at the moment and sometimes it gives me 18fps, i try restarting laptop but it dosent help. I downgraded Nvidia drivers it didn't helped. And i figured this gpu problem when i opened DaVinci resolve application as it straight forward told me that i am not using gpu.
On top of it, some keys on my keyboard changes color after coming back from sleep. I just love alienware look and material but with this they ruined my experience. Hopefully x15 would restore my faith in alienware again.
How’s your r4 or r3 holding up any stains as of now ?
No stains. Then again, I do take special care of it because it’s white. OCD. Lol.
how does the pc run playing a game like war thunder? im currently playing war thunder on a MacBook Pro barely getting 40 fps on the lowest graphics and super low resolution I would at least want to run med graphics if possible
I don't have that game, but if it's somewhat playable on a Mac @ 40fps, you'd be totally fine with this one. I had more frames playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on an ASUS G14 with an RTX 2060 than my 16" Macbook Pro.
This on sale today at bestbuy for$1400 from $1900 is this a good deal?
Yes, but check Dell’s Outlet for possibly a better deal and better return policy. Remember to chat and ask for a discount. You’ll get at least 2-5% just for chatting but I’ve gotten up to 10%.
@@ProTechShawn ok
Does it have per key rgb keyboard?
So those finger prints. Do you eat fried chicken while you use your laptop?
great review
Like Jazz on the Prince of Bel Air ahahah
Had to send mine back and got refunded
the r5 ryzen did look good but man it runns hot and i had the 5800H and a 3060 version
cpu 90c and more when even light gaming WoW and even tbc classic liiting fps to 100 ect.
GPU was OK* but terrible if you look at rivals .
dont buy this laptop its thermals are terrible even for low end like mine was.
waith for the next revision if they even fix it. or go for a Lenovo Legion 5or7
I myself ended up buying a refurbished Area 51m laptop.
Been using Alienware since 2010 my first was and still have is an
m17xR1 with Core 2 Quad and dual gtx280m.
my favorite was the M18 with i7 extreme 4940mx and dual 880m 8GB Vram each.
Still have it to.
Bro you have to do some tweaking got the same R5 with exact specs and I played with it, updated vbios and made a couple thermal profiles in command center. Runs great thermals stay low 45-55 c
Would this work with oculus quest 2?
If you're military/veteran you get 10% discount.
That's not shit

yo! the thumbnail aint working bro.
alienware m15 r6 (i7 11th gen rtx 3060 16gb 512gb ssd) VS legion 5 pro (ryzen 7 5000 series rtx 3060 16gb 1tb ssd)
More for your money with the Legion 5 Pro.
god damn those finger prints are definitely a turnoff.
I got 25% discount on the full package. 5900HX 3070 32gb 1T ssd 240HZ display mechanical keyb... below 2k
Couldnt say no to that 😉
Anyone have an easy to follow ubuntu install?
Better buy R6
Can this run warzone tho
It’ll run any game with the right settings.
all story the laptop is not shown..if you review show it...
I assume you just jumped around through the review. Chill bro. Grab a drink. Take a breathe. And just watch. Lol.
I wouldn’t buy it. Competition is better . The cooling on dell laptops aren’t the best either.I was looking at one of these and it only had 8 gigs of ram and a 256 gb hardrive for 1400. Total ripoff.16gb of ram and 1tb hardrives should be standard in 2021.
Buy your own ssd and ram. Better specs for cheaper.
@@propeldragon a 256 gb drive for a laptop that costs 1400 dollars is still a ripoff though. It should come with at least 1tb. 512 at the minimum
