I see your potting mix is much, much lighter than the soil my Caladium came in. They used regular house plant potting mix. As you mentionned, water dosen't come out of the holes when watering unless I make it very soggy and that dosen't sound so nice for a Caladium. Probably just bein worried over nothing. After all, they did grow them without rotting and it grows a bit, new tiny leaves pointing through the soil.
Hi Hannah, so good to see you are doing well, and glad you are getting over your cold, they can be a bother in the summer. I like to give my plants an airy mix as well, and haven't thought about adding charcoal, now I think I will. Thanks for sharing you soil mixture and we can all tailor ours to fit our plants. Stay safe and I will see you soon, sending love and hugs, bye for now.
We’ve been getting our veggie garden going plus adding grow pots as well. We have 4 tomato plants 4 different types of peppers 🌶. A little spot of watermelons, next green beans, yellow crook neck squash and corn. In the grow pots we have carrots in one, then in another beets, lettuce, sugar peas in the pods, green onions, kale and basil. The grow pots are a new thing, we do have a large pot with potatoes in it too. Saw the felt grow pots on Epic Gardening and decided to try them. Yep, keeping busy...also with my patio plants (succulents mostly) and house plants too. Trying to stay safe, take care and keep safe as well.
I can't find most of those things in my country, but I have some very happy plants so it's all good. I love aged sheep manure and sand. Perlite is great. Thanks for sharing.💚🌿😊
💚I've been using this same cocktail for years, and...yes it is the "best!!!"✨ I've also noticed the horticultural charcoal keeps odors at bay as well..It's a Win, Win!!!
Hi Hanna, thank for the video. Mine is similar: mainly perlite/orchid bark/clay pebbles and a little bit of soil. I re potted some plants last week and tried to replace some of the soil by coco coir just to try. I live in Ireland and I think it is really important to have a well draining mix. It is quite humid here but not super warm, so the soil takes ages to dry if it is not well draining. I tried soil mix from youtuber in the USA and it never worked for me, the soil was taking weeks to become "moist". That is when I started to use a lot of orchid bark/perlite/clay pebbles and it worked much better. Nothing wrong with the mix from people in the USA but it shows that growing medium really depends on where you live.
Happy Easter Hannah. Hope your wrists ok. Love your vids and your easy presentation. Just like listening to a friend chatting in the living room. Plants and garden looking fab as usual and love the fact your a DIY enthusiast. 👍🐣🐇🕊🌱 Ps goes with out saying stay safe. 💚
Good morning Hannah. I'm starting to collect all my ingredients for my potting soil mix. I recently added two Nanouks and an Oster plant (to name a few) to my collection. Hope you are well.
Thank you for sharing the soil mix, I kept wondering about the charcoal if it was ok to use the one from the wood we burn when grilling outside but now I know not to use it thank You, a friend gave me a money plant it's about 3ft tall but when she was gonna put it in my car she kind of broke one stem n the roots were exposed from the bottom, I try to reported as soon as I got home but now the tree it's loosing most of the leaves, it's been about a month what should I do? out weather is not to cold we been having rain and sun so far, I'm not sure How often I should water it, Thank you Hannah stay safe.
Yolanda Rates thanks for watching! Yes def don’t use that charcoal 😆🌿 Hmmm sorry I don’t have any experience with money plant... do you mean jade plant ‘Crassula Ovata’ or pachira aquatica? If it’s the pachira I wouldn’t take any advice from me as mine died a while back. Found it be be quite fussy! 😆😩🌿
Thanks Hannah, it makes you wonder what actually is in the pre prepared soil mixes sold for general purpose, presumably prepared by experts. They should see your lovely plant collection.
Hi Hannah, I hope you feel better real soon. I am just starting to get calatheas. I love how nice and big yours are. A big thank you for sharing your soil cocktail. I have been researching what mix is best...with not much luck. Happy Easter 🐣
Kind of a bit off from the content I work with but it is what I did before martial arts from since I was a kid just planting stuff around. Really interesting what a little mixing can do when it comes to what is under the leaves. Different textures and structures and nutrients in different times for the roots goes so far to do what you want to do or push the limits of your plant.
Thanks a lot for sharing the mix. I think I will add a bit normal soil so that it can retain moisture longer for my watering schedule. You could also grow some orchids like paphiopedilumsince you have most ingrediants for the potting mix ;)
omg thank you! I have been using burn free fertilizer combined with worm castings and fox farms soil which has perlite in it and coco coir and also peat moss... I think my mistake is taking them out of the draining pot and using my own ceramic pot instead. I'm gonna start leaving them in the draining pots.
Loved the video Hannah! I am in trouble now...I have just begun to collect my Anthuriums and it is all down hill from here hahahaha! Love this soil mixture...I too use this mixture but the clay pebbles are new to me and sound like a beautiful additive:)) You look beautiful by the way! I would give anything to be sitting next to you drinking coffee and repotting our plants...I hate that we live so far away from one another:( Love you my friend! Emily
I'm going to try this mix. I recently reported by plants using John innes no 3, but now I've got houseplant flies. Googling that it looks as though they live fertile wet soil, so I've given them the perfect conditions. Silly me. Going to report them again using proper compost.
Terracotta is good for succulent types mainly I find. Also for succulents your advice was good for the soil, but you can use horticultural grit instead of sand and make sure it's really gritty. :) I'm also moving away from soil. Everyone recommended John Innes 2 for succulents mixed with grit and such to make it gritty, but I always found it soggy even when I made it extremely gritty.
Thanks!!! I got some of the ingredients that you use except the gravel chips, I can't find in my place😩. Seems you got the same name with my younger sister Hannah ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing this mix Hannah, appreciate it. The nursery I visit keeps wanting me to use a mix that takes 2 to 3 weeks to dry, this has been causing a problem. I will give your mix a go this week. Given your weather conditions, approximately how often do you water your calatheas. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I’m very new to gardening and all my plants including suculents are in multipurpose compost 🤦♀️ I will order these and repotted everything!
That looks like a great soil cocktail. I prefer using pumice or scoria gravel instead av perlite though. Maybe I should give activated charcoal a try. Your lovely monstera is actually a philo. The correct species name is Philodendron opacum.
this is a wonderful video. Very informative and beautifully done. How can anyone down vote this? You've inspired me to take better care of my caladiums.
@@TropicalPlantAddict I'm heading out this weekend to get supplies for your potting mix recipe. I think several of my houseplants would benefit from it. You made it so simple. just came acroos. your video. really love your mix i am using . i read about that coco coir dose not hold. nutrients very well did you had any problems with that . also as it is sunmer. now. my mix. gets. dry very fast like need to water it every other day is a bit. much
Tuberface hi there no I haven’t had any issues with it and I fertilise my plants with baby bio liquid fertiliser every 3 weeks or so... I’m still currently only watering my plants weekly but can be twice a week when it gets really warm 🌿
Thanks for this! Getting a cuprea tomorrow! :) Sorry if this is a dumb q, but when repotting, since your mix is so chunky, how did you take the plant out of it's pot? Didn't all the soil fall off the roots? Or did it come out neatly as one mass and you just place it in the bigger pot and added the new soil? Thank you!
Hmmm I can’t see why not, I would just make it less chunky… So less of the Orchid bark or just use the coir and perlite etc. It will depend if they are moisture loving plants or not 🌿
Gaurav Kumar I don’t generally do anything with them… But sometimes I will wipe them with my neem oil mix to help prevent spider mites... neem oil, horticultural soap and warm water mix. The products are use are in my Amazon shop 💚🌿
I potted my Pastazanum in a very chunky aroid mix, a day later the leaves are very droopy in soft, do you think it drains way to fast for it to absorb any water?
I haven’t had any issues with mine. You can tailor the mix to any plant, maybe the mix needs a bit more coir and less bark? Some plants can sulk after being re-potted, especially if they are still acclimating etc so will depend on situation and environment etc
Hi 😊 First of all congratulations for your work! I would like to know your opinion on replacing the orchid bark with pine bark. I have been having a hard time finding orchid bark in my area. Thank you so much! P.s. it's for my calathea makoyana

Samthurium no I just fertilise around once a month during growing season. They all seem to outgrow their pots pretty quick anyway so they get potted up in a new mix quite often 💚🌿
Wesley Gaming that would probably be sufficient for calatheas/more moisture loving plants but would recommend adding in orchid bark/coir chips to make it a more chunky mix for aroids. It all depends what type of plants you are using it for 🌿
@@TropicalPlantAddict @Tropical Plant Addict is there anything you can recommend to add to be chunky soil? There is no such coir chips/ orchid bark nor active charcoal and hydrodrain :((

This mix did not work for me. I was looking at repotting most of my plants, including calatheas and monsteras. I bought all items for the mix as linked. The mix dried out way too quick and soon my calathea leaves started to curl in. I measured the soil moisture and after two days it was nearly dry. Essentially I think this mix combines too little soil to bind everything else and keep the mix moist for longer. I think the percentage of coir should be 60% and the rest the remainder. It was definitely a learning experience but I don’t recommend people follow this mix at the listed percentages.
Vern Black Vern Black the proportions of mix needs to be modified depending on the type of plant you are potting up, which I mention in the video and description box. Just add more coir for more moisture loving plants like calatheas etc 💚🌿
