This video does a great job of illustrating how important it is to use potting mixes that allow for aeration of roots. Recently, upon the advice of a commercial nursery, I’ve begun adding a small amount of ashes from my wood stove to my potting mix and so far so good with that. Love your plantology lessons. Thanks.
Ever since my root rot disaster, I've been doing the same. I've been repotting with chunky mixes. What I've been doing differently is using coco chunks and coco peat instead of potting soil bc I'm trying to go peat moss free. The best part about plants is all the experimenting. My plant room closet is just full of potting amendments bc I buy everything in bulk. I don't have any pumice or fir bark yet. I've meaning to buy some to try adding into my mixes as well. Eveytime I repot is different. Thanks for another great video. This was a perfect demonstration of how you do it.
Thank you for doing an updated soil video. It is good to learn what others have experimented with along the way and then after more experience found a great soil mix, It looks amazing!
I just recently found pro mix orchid mix and it consists of orchid bark,.lots of perlite, and lots of charcoal! So that has been my go to for adding to any tropical medium mix!
I have to say that this is the best soil mixing video that I have seen, and I thank you! Being able to watch you add each ingredient is so helpful. I just got into indoor plants last summer, and since I'm retired, I have spent a great amount of time this past winter watching UA-cam videos and soaking up information like a sponge. I think I have become a plant junkie! I just can't seem to get enough! 😅 I just got my clear plastic moss poles yesterday and can't wait to get started. I have a Marble Queen that is just the perfect size to go on a moss pole now. I watched your video on setting up a moss pole just before seeing this video. I'm chomping at the bit to get started. Melissa, thanks so much for your fantastic content. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing more content from you. ❤ 😊
Your standard mix looks a lot like mine, except I just buy coco coir and worm castings for the soil component and then use orchid mix for the chunky stuff. I used to work in a retail greenhouse and we sold a very coarse vermiculite there and I used that for years but recently ran out and it seems like no one uses that anymore. I just discovered your channel today and I'm very interested in your moss pole content. I've never tried that. Can't wait! Thanks!
I’m getting ready to venture into moss poles with a manjula and a lemon meringue Pothos and I would love a Instagram story explaining why you use an even chunkier mix for poles vs everything else. Thank you! Love your videos.
Thank you! The manjula will love a pole. I added mine on about 5 months ago. I'm sure the lemon meringue will love climbing! The chunkier mix is to help reduce rot since you water the moss more often it can drip into your substrate so it needs to allow for that drainage!
I’m glad to hear that! ☺️ Definitely don’t feel like you have to add anything else. I think I just wanted more of a chunkier mix for moss poles and certain plants. The more chunky it is the more you might have to water too lol.
Perfect timing! I’m about to repot a couple of things in the first ever aroid mix I just bought (after I mix it to make my own) , so this is the perfect video to watch first! ❤
@@plantsbymelissa I can’t wait! Most of the people I watch make their own so I wanted to try it 😅 I figured that my newly acquired expensive plants should probably be in something better than a super dense potting mix 😬 I’m newer into plants so I haven’t used anything other than potting mix and perlite in the past, so this was such a helpful video!! I recently change my soils in my pots for something who looks pretty close to yours 😅 I use cactus and succulent soil since I have so many succulents, but seriously even my Monsteras loves it! Just about to repot some of my plants in a new soil mix to make them happier and I was wondering, do you add slow release fertilizer afterwards, like, on top of the soil or would you add it in the chunky mix? Thank you xx❤
I love this, thank you for sharing! I just looked at the price of your soil on Amazon for me - over £200! (cries in UK)😂 I’m going to hunt around for a decent soil though as the one I currently use keeps my plants wet for too long, and I can’t wait to make it more chunky 😊
Outstanding mix combo on both Melissa. I have yet to try any of the Fox Farm products as I use rehydrated coir bricks mixed 50/50 with worm castings as my base. But I have heard a lot good things about them from multiple plant care channels so they must be of good quality. So long as they have a peat free coir base mix I'll well have to give them a try. Thanks for this informative video. 👍🌴
Thank you! I'm not sure if they have a peat free base or not I'll have to check. I actually haven't tried any of their other soils out besides this one. The coir bricks and worm castings is a great idea!
Good morning Melissa!! Thank you for sharing, is this soil mix good for all houseplants as well as, succulents and cacti? And your kitty is a cutie!!❤🥰
Thank you! It will still be good for them or you can save money and just buy a premade cactus mix and add some extra perlite. I do that sometimes since I don’t have a lot of them.
I know video is a year old,do you still use soil in your mosspoles? Some say they don’t add soil and some put soil. Will plants benefit with or without soil added?
If only I liked mixing food ingredients as much as soil! My family would love to have cakes etc made for them, instead I’m digging around in dirt like a kid 😂😂
Thank you! Yes, it can be a little damp out of the bag. I don't find it molds or retains moisture in the bin. You can let it dry out a bit if you want before closing your soil lid. When I used a larger container I noticed more condensation happening from the moisture so I like using the smaller ones.
Have you ever had fungus gnat larvae in the ocean forest soil? Ever since I bought it at my local nursery, I’ve noticed so many fungus gnats right after repotting my plants. Should I get rid of this bag and buy it from Amazon? Or is there a way to remove the larvae?
I haven’t had an issue with gnats with fox farm after repotting but if you use any soil gnats will be attracted to it. I water in mosquito dunks routinely for gnats. You could also try beneficial nematodes to water in and they’ll eat the larvae. I wouldn’t waste the soil bag but just treat for gnats :)

Hello Melissa :) I thought it is called moss pole because you just put moss in it to keep it moist at all times. Is that not the case? Greetings from Germany :)
Hi! Part of the moss pole will need to be planted in the soil with your plant. The moss pole above the soil line is filled with moss. The part of the moss pole under the soil line gets the super chunky mix to help it drain easier. I hope this helps 😊
I like to add a dash of worm castings too. It's already in the soil mix but since I have it🤷. You showed another mix a few videos ago with leca, bark and pumice. What would you with that now?
Oh that was just leftover chunky stuff I added to a bin. I used it all repotting so many plants these past couple weeks. I kept adding it to my normal mix to make it more chunky for some plants I repotted.
@@plantsbymelissa I'm glad you using mentioned perlite or pumice. Pumice is so much chunkier but I didn't know if it was as moisture retentive enough as the perlite.
It can be tricky and they take some practice figuring them out. It’s important to have an aerated mix so extra water can drain through. Moss continues to drip after watering too so if the soil is still wet then don’t water the moss all the way down :)
It depends I guess on how much repotting you have to do. Since I'm no longer using Sols I have added a lot more plants to the repot list. But once they're all repotted they'll be good for at least a year or 2 even depending on the plant. Everyone will be in a happy substrate that I don't have to worry and I won't have to 'remove old soil'. I can just upsize and not have to worry about it.
Yes :) I don't use this mix anymore. I am soil free now and lots of amendments like bark, pumice, tree fern, lava rock, coco husk, vermiculite and charcoal.
I can keep the smaller bins in my plant room closet and it's just easier for me to repot with. I tried to make a bigger bin of it up and it was too much at once.
I’m pretty sure her moss poles are all moss except for the small part that is in the soil. This is the mix she makes just for that so that big chunk of soil in the pot in the pole doesn’t hold a bunch of water and rot the roots.

I’m pretty sure her moss poles are all moss except for the small part that is in the soil. This is the mix she makes just for that so that big chunk of soil in the pot in the pole doesn’t hold a bunch of water and rot the roots.
Yes, exactly! Maybe I should have specified that in the video. The poles are still moss this is just the soil base 🥰
This mix is just for the base! The poles are still moss!
@plantsbymelissa okay got it! A lot of people are using non moss substrates for poles now but that makes sense
so no actual moss is added?

Have you tested your moss pole mix before doing your video?
yes :) I potted my recent white knight in it in a video as well as about 4-5 moss pole bases and they're doing great.
You are beautiful
