I have been trying to find this for 40 years. I watched it when I was babysitting as a 10 year old and seeing it while in a strange house I wasn’t familiar with, it scared the shit out of me and stuck with me this whole time. All I recall was the ship and the frozen lady. Now I get a sample of a little more to jog my memory. Crazy!!!
@@crabstick250 It's creepy that so many people who are 50-ish and watching it again right now at the same time, including me. I remember it now for the 'ship in the ice' part.
The very best Frankenstein movie, period. I absolutely loved this movie when i first saw it as a young boy, it definitely was part of my interest for horror genre , movies and books. Highly recommended viewing.
bonecollector1968 It was a TV movie, wasn't it? I didn't realize how old this was. Kind of makes ME feel old. Such a sad story. I especially loved the ending.
Saw this as a callow boy of nine and to believe it has stuck with me oh these many years is proof of it's timeless quality. A brilliant rendition as this (and quite close to the original novel I believe,) deserves more praise.
This has to be one of my favourite films ever. Especially Michael Sarrazins creature and James Mason !! I'd love you to put the bit where the creature finds he's decaying in full. Thats one of the most heartbreaking performancesI've ever seen ! Thanks for uploading this !
I remember being allowed to watch this (originally a two part movie), when I was 8 years old. It has stuck with me, all that time. I own it on DVD, now. Remembered every part of the movie. Still stunning to me, after all this time.
I was 8 years old when this was on TV. It gave me nightmares for years. The crawling hand was what scared me the most. Maybe that is where I got my love for horror movies. Like whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger kind of thing
I was totaly freeked out as a child on how gruesome the deaths in this movie were. I had the creeps for years after watching James Mason get zapped by lightning after being strung up on the ship mast. I guess that a movie that can create deep feelings like that would have to be done well. It seems to be a forgotten classic.
this adaptation was way ahead of its' time for 1973. I saw this when first broadcast on CBS. It got rave reviews for being bold and scary, and played in syndication for years on the Late Late Movie. I love the 70's.
I was never allowed to watch horror as a small boy: sex / homosexuality / violence / cruelty and cultural stereotyping yes but never made up horror films. Grump over; saw this when I was adult and loved it. It was a two parter mini series.
Yes as earlier commentators have said, a brilliant film. Extended the whole Frankenstein story to a longer more complex tale. Saw it in the mid-70s I guess when it was quite new (made '73) -- it's very "of that time" - outlandish plot in a way, but gripping. Seemed extremely long, not sure I even saw it to the end. Must be available somewhere.... :)
I just purchased the dvd of the entire movie from amazon for like $13.00 s/h included, and in the very beginning James Mason does a brief narration of Mary Shelley and speaks about the movie-watching right now a perfect way to spend a rainy sunday afternoon..
Leonard Whiting is very handsome, too in this movie...I liked him since Franco Zefferelli's 1968 Romeo and Juliet with Olivia Hussey....I love that movie and he was very handsome as Romeo....
I loved this version of Frankenstein when I was a kid. I thought it was the best adaptation ever. It just had a realism about it that other adaptations seemed to lack, and an innate "grotesqueness" that was highly effective but not over-dramatic
In response to some earlier comments ,Hmm yes i think the writers of this movie must have got the idea from that Mary Shelley woman who by coincidence wrote a book called Frankenstein
I remember the "head pulling" scene and the guy getting his head slammed into the wall (blood smear as he slid to the floor). When I was a kid I watched some really jacked-up movies but I totally dug it!
The screenplay was by Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy. They write a Mummy scrpit too that Universal never produced, but still owns. It's about a femla Mummy and is called "The Lady From the Land ofthe Dead."
I remember this seeing this at Christmas 1975 on the BBC. I resurfaced again late in 1994 on the BBC, where I recorded it on video and still have it on copy. Though it has poor sound and picture quality after more than 25 years.
The TV movie "Frankenstein - the True Story" I first saw in February of 1975. It was broadcasted on NBC-TV. I was 24 at the time. Finding out via the TV pull-out section of my hometown, Indianapolis Star Sunday edition I saw that the two part movie was airing that week so...I wanted to audio record the movie via my mom's GE cassette recorder with a plugin microphone on stand right in front of my folks small 10" Panasonic black & white portable TV. The recording came through fairly good...I was enthralled by the overall script, acting by several noted British actors and few American actors, the scenery sets and greatly, the music score. As the years went by, I literally memorized most of the script lines. One of my all-time favorite actors, James Mason, did a pretty good job in the movie playing infamous Dr. Polydorry (aka "Polly-Dolly" as he was called by two people) (Hope I spelled Mason's character right) Anyway...beautiful upcoming actress Jane Seymour was a pretty as well as a few other ladies who were in the movie. Do I still have the cassettes I recorded decades ago? I have in my vast collection of over 50 years few left to enjoy. Sadly, "Frankenstein - the True Story" is not around...as far as I have found.
This must have been on in the summer cause I watched the whole thing without my parents knowing. I was only 9 and they never would have let me. With good reason, it scarred me for life! : )
According to the Wiki entry, it showed late in 1973. But, it was shown (originally) on two successive Sunday night, so you might have got the chance because of that!?
Actually, I should correct myself - it's one of the first major productions she did, then she made a lot of guest appearances before landing the part of Serina. When this was released on VHS, they cut most of her scenes - it wasn't until the DVD that it was properly restored.
I saw it when I was 8 or 9. Scared the crap out of me, I didn't want to watch but I had to, if you know what I mean. Nearly 40 years later, I think the movie has aged "beautiful"ly.
Leonard Whiting was always a total hottie! There have been a few comparisons to him in relation to Zac Efron (why?) no contest!!! Leonard is way,way sexier and English to boot. As far as this movie is concerned great adaptation and stellar cast! One of my fave movies as a young lass. Hence in a perfect world it would be soo fab if some other horror soul mate would upload this film in its entirety. Love the trailer, but face the facts its just a tease. .DESIRE MORE!!! Thx.....
It is available on DVD. I am not certain if the DVD has the entire film (originally shown on two Sunday nights), but it is still so wonderful to watch!
I loved this version - "you love your creature whilst it was beautiful but when it was no longer you wish to destroy it". Some things you never forget. x Wish I could get region 2 version. Would love to see the beautiful Michael again. x
I was 10 years old when I saw this, and I thought Leonard Whiting was the hottest thing since Davy Jones. For about a year on Friday nights (that was the only night I was allowed to stay up late), I would watch the opening of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, in hopes Leonard would be one of the guests. He never was, probably because he wasn't that big a celebrity in America, but in my heart, he was the greatest.
@DandAinTac ....It is good to know that I wasn't the only kid deeply scarred by this movie. There was another grusome death in an old movie that did that too me, Fantastic Voyage when the white blood cell ate the ship and Dr. Michaels with it. That creeped me out for years, and yet it remains one of my all time favs.
This was a big ratings success at the time. My feeling was that people had waited for years to see Jane Seymour get her head torn off and they were not going to miss their chance!

This is a great movie... pretty violent and scary for a made for TV film. The scenes on the ship scared me when I was a kid! And I love the ballroom scene where the monster pulls off the female creature's head!
@chadwicks733 Depends on how fast it works. Burns deep enough to be "3rd degree" tend not to hurt at the burn site, as sensory nerves in the skin are destroyed. Not sure how much pain would be registered from organ innervation. Then again, having sudden, massive caustic burns over 100% of your body at once might induce systemic shock, and you might suddenly black out and/or go into arrest and die.
I remember watching this movie on New Years Eve (1974 or 75?). I'm pretty sure it's made for TV, but it's still one of the most twisted, violent, disturbing movies I ever saw. (of course my mom would never let me go see a movie like this at the theater or drive-in). Scary movies rely on an element of mystery. This movie isn't so scarry as it's just a gross-out, shock value type flick.

@DandAinTac I remember my oldest brother taking me to see Alien, and I was just totaly blown away by that movie. Fantastic Voyage won a few awards for special effects and musical score I think. Omg can’t believe I found this move on UA-cam what was I thinking 🤔 when I was little this movie scared the living daylights out of me I was so afraid to go outside in the dark or be in a dark room, to this day just thinking 🤔 about still gets to me, I so need to go back to my comfort zone to forget seeing this bad mistake
I was terrified of this film as a child in the 70s...I cannot believe I have finally found it again!
Len Whiting! OMG, I forgot about him! I am now 13 again. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Great score. LOVE IT!!!!!! THANK YOU!

will never forget the scene with the arm or the monster pulling the lady's head off, very frightening for the time
...the hand walking across the floor...with intension...
steve bryant my favorite scene with the spooky arm. BOO!
Also her being run over by the carriage was very graphic for that time.
Gave 12 year old me nightmares. Hearing that music, it all comes back! Eek!

qwiet stormz what about the famous Mel Brooks a real classic lots of laughs. He is a shear genius.

Yes it is, at Amazon.com.
Hola soy mexicana quisiera tenerla completa en español
i am so happy i ordered this movie off amazon.com yesterday.
I think there were 2 Frankenstein productions that year. The other was a two parter that had Bo Svenson as the Creature.
