Guy: I’ll show you some tricks *shows technique that could take down 5 people at once* “So as you can see it’s a very basic combination” Seriously, this guy’s good.
thanks! Yes, my goal is to teach, and help my students. I am sure you will get there! If you are having fun, and have the right tools at hand, you can do it
I like the combinations that you use. I learned the movements years ago, but I didn't try all of the combinations that you included. I definitely will incorporate them into my routine. Thank you for sharing. Nice speed!
I bought the program six weeks after after I started using my hiking staff with bo techniques to help loosen a tight shoulder. Working well for that condition. Because I have a bo in the form of a hiking staff with me on a regular basis, it could be used in a self defense situation on the trail. While I am on the trail I stop to practice the form I am working on while my girlfriend rests. Grateful for the program. Thanks.
Sheldon Christenson Really glad to hear that you are liking the bo program. That is very interesting that you practice while on trails and hiking, that sounds really nice. I just went hiking through the mountains last week, and would have enjoyed something like that. Keep it up. :)
UltimateTraining I was wanting to do the same thing with a hiking staff is to train when I hike and I'm 5'8 so would a five foot staff be Long enough to do these techniques
It's very nice to see someone on UA-cam that is kind enough to post tutorials and have so much technique, your movements are very clean, I practice with nunchaku (self taught) so I know that achieving that speed and precisión is no easy task, my respects, and I hope to be wielding the bo son with your help, wish there were more like you
I've had a bo for years and I finally want to learn and this looks super helpful so thank you but I have to make a joke that as a disabled person I'm watching you do the high knees and bo spinning thinking to myself "i gotta figure out one before the other or else I'm gonna be even more crippled" LOL! Looking forward to trying this soon though, thanks again!
It's nice to see someone on UA-cam with so much technique willing to do a tutorial, thank you for showing your talent and not showing off haha I practice nunchaku so I know that achieving that speed and accuracy is no task. I hope to develop more techinique so I may even post tutorials myself, once again, thanks, and I hope to be wielding the bo soon with your help
and how you said un the vídeo, i learned the lesson and created a basic combo a little bit longer i want you to check it out, i am newbie in this, maybe two months, but followin your lessons and Jake Mace too, my favorite teachers! thankyou ;)
Great video!!! I am going to make a BO staff out of hornbeam. So I will definitely watch more of your videos. One question, why do you always say uss when you strike?
MThompsonvought That is a breathing technique. If you are truly striking with full power and bodily alignment, breathing must come into play. My breathing varies from an uss sometimes to more of a kiai.
I’ve been trying to practice this stuff for a couple of weeks now and god knows I want to learn but it’s so hard without an actual teacher in front of me to correct my mistakes. It’s super overwhelming and seeing all these combos and stuff and I can’t pull any of it off yet is super discouraging
Null / An?ma i have this problem with any hobby I try and I hate it, im sure you’ll eventually see improvement, just don’t think that it looks good. Always try to find ways to make it better.
On my first BO staff training lessons my Sensei said to me Be one with the staff dont hold on to it like you'd choke someone. Then i realized what he meant when i hit myself in the head with it because i wasnt paying attention
I am not authorized to answer that question. To get the exact answer you will need to contact a local authority, or research the state's laws. From what I understand, many objects could potentially be seen as a "weapon illegal to carry to go armed." So, if you are simply getting out of your car and walking to the park to practice, or walking into your dojo to train, I don't expect you would get stopped by an authority. If you walk around with a heavy staff everywhere you go, and carry it in a way that seems defensive or offensive (unlike a stick for the blind, or a cane, walking device), then it seems to be a bad idea. Again, you have to do your own research. The only common situations where the average person has a bo like weapon in their hand, is if they have a walking stick (hiking), or a cane, etc.
Hi, yes, I have made great growth as a practitioner and a teacher. You can join the GMAU Ultimate Bo course to see everything I've been up to: globalmartialarts.university/course/Ultimatebo
Nathan Charles Phillips I say sai because that is the weapon I'm most proficient with, Okinawan sai had no blades, at worst I'd break his finger, any Okinawan weapon would do the same, the point being, that finger point doubles the target size for his opponent
Hey, I am 155 cm tall and my staff is 153 cm or something close to that - is that too short? I can work with it just fine but when I ordered it it came with some kinda sticky coating - I guess polish for wood protection on - and it tends to get really slippery- like when I spin it my hand slowly inches towards the end with every spin - it gets really annoying really really fast D: I also just realized that my staff is a tad bit thicker than that - and rather heavy too so I can only imagine how much damage it would do to another human should it be used on one D:
Yes, standing on one leg gives you a weaker stance in general, having both feet planted would give you the strongest positioning. But, there are advantages to footwork and lifting your leg, that create different forms of energy transfer. And, some knee lifts or crane stance type positions are purely for artistry within a kata.
AHHH I want to do this and learn this but i dont have a Bo staff and idk where to get one... And if i have one right now... there’ll be another problem cause i sprained my ankle 2 days ago from playing floor hockey😭
Well, I would obviously never recommend fighting with a bo on the street. But hypothetically speaking a long staff shaped object like a pipe could be picked up off the ground in a hostile situation to inflict some damage on an attacker that either has no weapon or a short bladed weapon. But, if in a firearm situation a bo would do nothing for you.
You would need a white wax wood bo staff… it would be very dangerous though… you might injure someone so you would be at risk of being sued if the person pressed charges…
Also, if you want to time travel to rural Japan or Medieval Europe, masterful staff skills would be quite prized, as they strongly translate to long sword, naginata, and pole weaponry. In modern times, I don't recommend walking around with a white wax staff like a tough guy, though.
+Darrin Liddy It is a great exercise and way to stretch out your forearms, wrist, and shoulder. It can be a nice visual and aesthetic element in certain types of kata demonstrations. In terms of realistic combat, most spins will not be useful. They would actually inhibit your ability to react with a strong block or proper strike, if you are caught mid-spin. There are some half-spins that can roll straight into a strike. Sort of like doing a spin, and then a back kick (spinning back kick). Otherwise, spins have their place in overall bodily exercise and lubrication of the joints for good staff training.
Spinning the staff? Idk if ur talkin bout the staff, but spinning the staff makes the bad guy that wants to get u think that ur dangerous when u know how to spin the staff fast
nice posture, balance and handeling but you really don't need to raise your leg so high its just teaching you to step in as you strike. If you lift your leg too high in sport karate and they are faster then you, your just gonna go off balance an fall on ur ass. As for the oos sounds everyones doing that In dojos lately just because your sensei says it doesn't mean you need to follow every little detail. Im sure when your sensei was making the sounds he means more enthusiastic an something you would gain strength and power from. not a little vocal tick in your throat that sounds like bad beatboxing lol
kyle reace If anyone would like to know my experience ive done aikido, kendo, laido muay thai + basic karate and ninjutsu weapons training. ive been a runner up in top 3 most times coming 1st each year in Australian sport karate - AMAC
Looks like a drum major baton routine. That has very little to do with martial arts. That is a "toothpick" not a Bo. Oh and it is either Bo or staff, not both.
+John Edwards Finally somebody noticed.. I keep saying to people how stupid it sounds when you say "bo staff...training".. Use either English or Japanese term, not both one after the other. And yes, this guy understands Bo-jutsu same like ballerina understands otto-engines

Seriously, this guy’s good.
I just thought of that too XD lol
i just broke a shit load of things in my room

“So you can do this by the end of the video”
*momentarily gets possesed by the devil*
“Okay so-“
thanks! Yes, my goal is to teach, and help my students. I am sure you will get there! If you are having fun, and have the right tools at hand, you can do it
Great sir! I filmed it for you and my other bo students. I have some more interesting things in the works in the next few weeks...

I liked the part where he said
"AHSSSSSSS”
Great form but please do the last spin i super slow motion so we can follow along first times until it gets into muscle memory
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I will consider a basic spins video for sure. Also, I like the term bo virgin, I think I may start using that...
I've had a bo for years and I finally want to learn and this looks super helpful so thank you but I have to make a joke that as a disabled person I'm watching you do the high knees and bo spinning thinking to myself "i gotta figure out one before the other or else I'm gonna be even more crippled" LOL! "At home follow along lesson"
*Records the video outside
Me: what a rebel
Thanks for the basic :)
Thanks man
definitely subscribing!!
this may be a silly question but what is the legality of having a Bo on the public Street in California
I am not authorized to answer that question. To get the exact answer you will need to contact a local authority, or research the state's laws. very nice
Can you just use a cut down piece of bamboo? I have one and it's pretty strong, being able to hit trees with a all my strength without breaking.
Yes you can.
That's a lovely finger point at the striking hand, it'd be a shame if I were to, oh I dunno, strike it with a sai...
bringing a sai to a bo fight... what a tough guy
Nathan Charles Phillips I say sai because that is the weapon I'm most proficient with, Okinawan sai had no blades, at worst I'd break his finger, any Okinawan weapon would do the same, the point being, that finger point doubles the target size for his opponent

That is not too short. A staff that is about the same size as you is a great option.
I got on my toilet and yelled S SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS ESSSS and it worked thanks!
Wouldn't standing on one leg make you have worse balance?
Yes, standing on one leg gives you a weaker stance in general, having both feet planted would give you the strongest positioning. But, there are advantages to footwork and lifting your leg, that create different forms of energy transfer. And, some knee lifts or crane stance type positions are purely for artistry within a kata.

Shit thats hard but i wanna learn ir
Can you actually fight against other people , on the street for example?

Well a broomstick works but it is a broom stick
Donatello Rocks, what happened? Why can't you walk?
Do I really have to do those sounds no offense
Ah! Sorry. Yes, insurance does not usually cover Bo Staff Damage.
Didn't say what bo or how to acquire
I'm a kid and I want to know what height do I use
Probably 5'
I've made a few bo staffs. In my school we tend to say your own height plus your own fist (thumb at the bottom of the fist).
UltimateTraining I'm 6 1 what size should I use?
thanks
A quote frim 0:25-0:37 " usss usss ahhhh usss us usss uuuuussss " -sensei
did you get a stray cat to film
Actually, my cat Angel filmed it, she's not a stray, she's an educated cinematographer.
whats the point of spinning?
