    No one would smack staves in the middle in a real fight. The whole point of a fight is to attack your opponent and win the fight, swinging at some arbitrary point in space only to contact the enemy's bo is pointless. Every single time you guys do that, imagine if the other guy didn't have the bo to "block," what would happen? The swing would just fly over his head and miss him completely, because you weren't aiming at anything to begin with!

    • @TheSADVeeto
      @TheSADVeeto 8 років тому +2

      Look into what is called "binden" in historical European martial arts. It involves striking a blow to claim the center space between the fighters. If your opponent does not contest this by a similar strike, you can then effortlessly flow into a thrust and finish him. I believe that is what we see vestiges of in this video. Unfortunately, it is obscured by the rest of the performance being so appallingly poor.
      Check out the youtube channel "Dimicator" for more on this.

    Jake, you are in good shape and obviously a gifted athlete, but your martial arts is lacking basic fundamental principles. You add movement where there does not need to be any, you look down all the time, you have an anterior pelvic tilt , your arms are always at an obtuse angle rather than a 90 right angle, you make all these sound effects like SKT and have developed bad habits from him, DS and SHS. You need to remove their bad habits from your practice and study from someone that knows what they are doing. Many people have attempted to reach out to you , I do not understand why you can not be humble and learn from them. Many people that do not know will say how great you are and that is fine, but you are misinforming them. Sincerely.

    Not only is it choreographed AKA not real, but it is really shitty choreography. Anyone could hit the other person at anytime if they tried. Like the moment where he pushes the staff to the ground. Just run it along the other persons staff and it's an easy hit.

    • @duffmcduffee
      @duffmcduffee 8 років тому +12

      Sure. But when exactly would you actually have a "real" bo staff fight in real life. 99.999% of martial arts is basically dance classes for men. Practical self-defense skills are basically a) don't get into violent confrontations, b) situational awareness, and c) sprinting. For the handful of people in professions that require real physical confrontation skills, a gun beats all other methods, and for less lethal methods, a taser or some pepper spray beats all martial arts methods. If you are a bouncer or a cop, it could be useful to know a couple jiu jitsu moves, but for the ordinary person, it's really about avoiding violence. Everything involving a staff is just for fun.

    • @Supermario0727
      @Supermario0727 8 років тому +3

      +Duff McDuffee Your argument about the practicality of these techniques is completely wrong. Anytime an individual gets into a fight, he has the opportunity to use these techniques. Martial arts are not about choreography and dancing. What you are criticizing is only in the movies. A real martial artist will almost always have an advantage over an unskilled fighter.

      There are actual trained professionals that would say all this is bullshit and train you how to defend yourself the proper way with a bo staff and what they are doing is good for sparring and that's about it and all sparring really is is just a warm up to use said weapon or to practice a certain technique

    • @David-bl2si
      @David-bl2si 4 роки тому

      ItsJennifer This is not real. Any trained professional could tell you this is choreographed and train you in a real fight. This is a pathetic display with shit tons of wasted movements and so much exposure for the opponent, that cannot easily be covered due to the positioning they are using. I’ve never trained in any sort of martial art, and if this man was using the technique he was in this video, I guarantee I could beat his ass within a matter of seconds because this is clearly fake.

    lol, real fight?
    Start with a bizarre way of holding sticks.
    Then tapping sticks together without any danger of actually getting hit.
    Then the attacker pushes actually knocks the stick to the ground and is about to "take his head off" (fight over), but instead of swinging the stick to the open face, he swings past it to let the guard come back up and hit.
    hrm.

    • @RaineAlgessar
      @RaineAlgessar 9 років тому +2

      Thank you. Didn't have to write it myself.
      Ecenomy of motion. The idea of fighting is not to give your opponent time to guard. Quite the contrary. It's sad that the origin of kung fu is so forgotten.

    • @RaineAlgessar
      @RaineAlgessar 9 років тому +4

      igor caique You learn what you train. If you teach yourself improper technique, you will have improper technique. If it is a demonstration of how you fight with a staff, it should show that. Not how you twirl a staff around pretending to fight. Then that is showmanship, and not fighting. This is showmanship. Certainly not real fighting. In any way, shape or form.
      For comparison, if I as a member of the SCA would have a demonstration, I would aim to hit my opponent. If he doesn't guard, he'll get hit. That demonstrates that the technique works. If he guards, it shows that the guard works. Risk of injury is simply solved by putting on a damned helmet.

    • @eschelar
      @eschelar 9 років тому +1

      RaineAlgessar Absolutely.
      +igor caique Training is *training*. It's practicing the movement set. No sense in practicing something that leaves you *VERY* vulnerable and calling it a martial arts routine.
      It's maybe suitable for really, really bad TV shows, but I'm no expert, and even I can see it's truly horrible form.

    • @RaineAlgessar
      @RaineAlgessar 9 років тому +1

      The problem is usually that a real fight is too fast to be exciting for most people, since they can't follow what is happening. Show-fighting in movies and such exaggerates movement to make it clear what is happening.
      Issues with this video is that they are not training to actually hit their opponent, and are doing waaay too wide movements. Just like in kung fu movies. They are exposed in a trillion ways and the moves are easily countered by someone who actually knows how to fight with a weapon. It's rubbish, and a scam since they are selling DVDs claiming it to be efficient martial arts.

    • @RedSkream
      @RedSkream 9 років тому +2

      RaineAlgessar proper... improper.. It doesn't matter.. If it works, it works.. And dude, i am sure this guy is fast... But my money would not be on him on a real bo staff fight.. I learned the basics from him...but fighting.. No.. I did not learn fighting from him.. Fighting you learn by just practicing alone.. By yourself.. Becoming one with the staff.. When you fight, movements come naturally. Not methodically.

    "Real fight" aside...I knew better. lol. I've seen some of your other stuff and I know you're pretty good with that thing. My questions/criticisms are practical in nature. In the form, the two high, power strikes didn't appear to be targeted at anything other than each others staffs. So if one of the staffs failed to come up, the other would hit nothing but air. My other issue is towards the end when your staff was pinned. Why would the aggressor choose to release your staff and come all the way around to strike from the other direction when he could just simply come straight up into your face from that position?

I've talked with a friend who wishes to do a different Sith (Darth Talon) and she and I will work out a show routine, using many of the techniques and maneuvers you've shown here. "Great" and "Fun" are objective, and many would disagree.
      "Traditional" in what sense? Sin Kwan Thé was a fraud, and you will not post your lineage, so what claim do you have there?
      "Keep Traditional Chinese Martial Arts alive" - They are alive, and you aren't helping by presenting it in a bad light.
      Nobody cares about your funding, stop trying to control and divert the conversation away from the problem that people actually have with you: That you are being deliberately misleading, and employing bad practice.
      Lastly, you seem to be unable to respond directly to any "haters" but have plenty of time to respond to the fans, even though the "haters" seem to be the most "Liked" comments, and therefore the first that you would logically see unless you actively avoid them.

    Really want to learn how to use the Bo staff properly. This is quite good instructions, sir! - Question is if these techniques works against someone else not using a Bo staff and simply goes all in just to beat the shit out of me, and I defend myself with - say - a walking cane.

    • @EmpiricalPragmatist
      @EmpiricalPragmatist 10 років тому +4

      I was going to keep these comments to myself, but since it looks like you might actually try this is a real-life situation, I'll answer you for your own safety's sake:
      It's pretty easy to tell how useful anything this guy teaches will be in a real fight. Watch the "strike" at 3:14 and again at 3:29. Ask yourself, what are they actually striking at? A real enemy doesn't have to block that at all. He will ignore your wild swing at thin air and put you in hospital. That pointless strike is just the tip of the iceberg. Please never try this stuff in a real fight. It's just for show.
      If you want to use a cane for self-defense, practice some Japanese Kobujutsu, or HEMA's quarterstaff, not the American flashy stuff.

    • @LethalOwl
      @LethalOwl 10 років тому +2

      EmpiricalPragmatist Right, thanks a lot for that reply - I've kind of already "made" a make-shift bo staff, which I've put to some basic practice. But I reckon practicing "duel-fighting" like this is quite senseless, given you won't meet someone on the street that challenge you to a duel, instead of skipping the niceties and just going straight for the K.O. punch to the face.
      I'll make sure to look up these two things you suggested and look up other alternative 'fighting styles' that employ use of wooden weaponry - Aka in forms of a staff, cane, etc. More based on a scenario where I'm defending myself from a legit attacker, and not a duelist who've practiced the same art as I.
      Again, thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

    • @EmpiricalPragmatist
      @EmpiricalPragmatist 10 років тому

      ***** It's a pleasure. Just thought now, that you might also want to explore "Bartitsu", as well - specifically designed for self-defence using canes, top hats, opera cloaks and other apparel of the 19th century gentleman, because a guy called Bartholomew brought Ju-Jitsu back to England from Japan and wanted to adapt it to their dress style and equipment. It even employs the hooked handle of a cane. Don't know where you would find a teacher, though...

    • @LethalOwl
      @LethalOwl 10 років тому +2

      EmpiricalPragmatist Now that sounds like something right down my alley, if I can find a way to learn it properly! I've taken a great liking to the 19th century dressing style, which is why I mentioned canes to begin with - Knowing how to defend oneself using these things would simply just be epic.
      Thanks for mentioning that martial art, too!

    I observed one thing. You grab the staff like Robin Hood after transitioning from the low block to the low attack, grab it in the proximal third, the same as you do for the high attack, to have more reach and avoiding getting hit on the fingers. I don't know if it is a uncorrected mistake that you do without realizing it. You do make the hands sliding for the attacks to the head.

    what kind of wu shu shit is this??? lol first and foremost the minute you two crossed staves the first time, me as the aggressor would have rolled my staff around yours and smacked you in the face....secondly, when your staff got snapped down to the ground, while your opponents leading leg was opened and exposed sweep your staff forward right into the shin. not to mention all that added movement and spins...waste of energy, be efficient be precise. ..strike hard, strike fast....sit there doing spins and twirls like a cheerleader and I'm going to wait for that gap an hit you....c'mon guys if you're gonna teach people, teach them right

      that "wu shu" shit has been proven to work. not just because you cant grasp the concept of cumulative skill doesn't mean its bullshit. again, it is for beginners. your not supposed to do that exact thing in a fight your supposed to use the individual parts of it and sparing over time strengthens you in doing those manuvers. once again you clearly don't understand how technique works. do soccer players do ball tricks in the middle of a game? hell no. but learning them helps them to improve. let me know if u get what Im saying.

      +harly quin harly...i mastered the staff long ago, so i do understand the point you are trying to make...but do you understand mine? teaching weapons combat isn't about show, flash or style...it's about efficiency, economic movement, precision...and just a touch of brutal thinking. ...if facing an opponent armed also with a staff, where would you strike for first dear one??? if the answer isn't for the hands holding the staff then you aren't thinking it though the right way....my point is if you want to teach beginners how to fight, teach them right

    Of all weapons. I love using a staff.
    The range, the defensive nature of it and when needed, could be turned into an offensive weapon.
    And when I played video games, i loved pairing with kicks due to the force and acrobatics that a staff could afford you.
