  • Craig Gannon was asked to join The Smiths in early 1986 after the band had fired bassist Andy Rourke. Having already made his name as a member of Aztec Camera, he soon became the band's second guitarist after Rourke was re-instated and recorded many notable singles with them.
In this interview Gannon discusses joining the band, working on the 'Panic' and 'Ask' singles, going on tour in both the UK and the US with The Smiths and the reasons for his departure from the band. He also discusses his later work with Morrissey after the Smiths had split, including the singles 'The Last of the Famous International Playboys' and 'Interesting Drug'.

He should have carried on writing with Morrissey. imagine that! He only got a £45,000 payout for his work with The Smiths. What a plonker!

In the 80's that was a pretty large amount of wedge, you have to remember Craig, Andy & Mike weren't the songwriters, so they were probably relying on their wages.

This was very interesting. It's amazing to me that Craig was only 20 on that Smiths tour. Just a few years older than me, the fan. There could be all kinds of reasons Marr & he fell out. Young men are obviously inherently competitive. There could have been some jealousy or a perceived threat. Who knows? (They might not even really know.) I thought the tour with Gannon was the most complete The Smiths sounded live though. You really need a 2-guitar attack for those wonderful intricate songs, even with the more rocked up approach they favored. I liked Craig's work with Morrissey solo too, especially "Interesting Drug," which felt like a cool continuation of the Smiths.

Rob Falgiano I think there might have been some jealousy of him, sad.

Just a change in the dynamic, 9 times out of 10 it does cause upset.

So sad and so talented. Having worked in healthcare for a long time, I detect a man in low mood, almost despondent. Maybe and hopefully I'm wrong, not been into The Smiths that long, guess it gets messed up once bands get big.

Honest guy but very naive , you're not gonna have a career with someone if you're raising legal cases against them

In the 80's 45k was a lot of money, and he needed to pay his bills. You need the trust there from the start.

What’s mental is the fact you prefer Morrissey’s solo stuff
