I give Tony Wilson a lot of extra credibility because as he once said movingly about Ian Curtiss after he died "he really meant it" (referring to the songs and his performance in the band). I think Tony Wilson really meant it too because as anyone who knew him well would tell you - it wasn't for the money that's for sure.
I've Pmsl all the way through these 6 parts. Tony was an absolute brilliant, intelligent and funny man. And seems he had Morrissey spot on in so many ways. Separate the artist from the art. We all have to with Morrissey. Everyone he's worked with he's been mean or difficult with and mostly turns on in the end. How has Boz Boorer stayed with him so long? Even Adam Ant who Boz worked with too found Morrissey difficult. And Boz is friendly with both.
“The other two.” I’ve always admired Andy’s bass work.... it was essential to the Smiths sound in a way that Mike’s drumming was not. He deserves more credit than he ever gets.
Even as a Marr obsessive, I have to say Marr had the melodies and Morrissey the lyrics. Together, it was magic and its about time they both realised it!
According to one of the previous clips from this interview with Tony Wilson, Marr provided the harmonic structures for the Smiths' songs, over which Morrissey laid his own melodic lines (i.e. Morrissey didn't just write the lyrics).
Marr done a couple of outstanding albums with The The. Mind Bomb and Dusk. Those 2 are essential albums in my opinion. Apart from that, Wilson seemed pretty on the ball.
@@jogon7914 Uninspired, obvious chord progressions, awful guitar sound, awful artwork, awful harmonica solos etc etc I could go on but I haven't the inclination. Just awful music for blokes with ponytails who eat pot noodles.
It's not an exact analogy but just like the artist Sting had some good to great solo work it never approached the power of the songs with The Police. Same with Morrissey he has some great songs in his solo career but his collaboration with Marr had that magic that can't be eclipsed.
@@theselector4733 Every songwriting partnership Morrissey has had since The Smiths has ended in court case over unpaid royalties. Morrissey has a habit of not paying people.
And 20% of the time with erudition, razor wit, candour, charm and prescience. He was a right twat too don't get me wrong, but 20% is still 19% more than most...
The guy really pushed the north and his grandiloquence was certainly smoke and mirrors with quite a few spoons of bullshit at first. But it did light a fuse and an enthusiasm in the city of Manchester and it continues to this day.

These interviews are a very important document
Lots of respect for Tony RIP

The other 2 did go with it and played with Morrissey at his first solo gig

New Order are a New Order tribute band now
Great stuff, love Wilson, loved the Smiths.
Wilson is the Dumbledore to Morrissey's Tom Riddle.
Would love to hear about Barney being out-difficulted by Gillian lol. Can't imagine that haha.

Testament to Matt Johnson's brilliant songwriting and vision. Dusk is one of the greatest albums of all time.
@@jogon7914 It really isn't mate.
@@robertloader9826 why isn't it? Come on, I'm interested why you think not.

@@robertloader9826 so, basically, you're not a The The fan lol.
The answer to the first thing. Morrissey "I feel myself on stage. Offstage I'm a act. Its oposit"
2:55 Is Wilson about to cheat in an exam?
2:10 ooo he called him Morrissey by accident instead of Stephen. lol

RIP Tony Wilson. His resting place is inside the Cemetry gates made famous by The Smiths song.
Need the year of this interview for some context please.
Considering he died in 2007 and mentions the late 90s this must be 2004 or 2005
interesting about gillian...
I know! I always thought she was fairly easy going putting up with Barney and Hooky at each others throats all the time?!
I don’t quite understand what Tony is going on about there
@@DavidKArrrrgh
Crack cocaine in the early 90s.
Doubt hooky would be anywhere near that stuff. Nor Bernard for that matter.
What year was this interview recorded?
Not elvis bit little richard
Vincent Anderson yessssss
“As Steven Morris once said”
The the?
Dusk for sure, he’s on all that isn’t he?
Really good albums, but essential?
@@DavidKArrrrgh of course
@@DavidKArrrrgh nope. nowhere near.
I’d sooner listen to JD than the Smiths any night. I need music with edge and danger.
Edgy...
'Elvis Presley invented'... lol lol lol...it's what I loved about Tony, occasionally he'd make the most ridiculous sweeping statements !
A brilliant musician controlling how his money is spent? Kudos to Morrissey.
If u mean not wanting to pay Vini 1500 Quid, that's just being a tightass.
