      Hi Emma
      Can you help me with this problem i have been facing with my 2months old . She sleeps through night and i try to give her naps during the day which makes up to at least 16-17 hours a sleep in 24 hours. The most difficult part for me is when i m trying to put her to sleep at night she doesn't fall asleep easily, it takes me around 2 hours and some time more to put her to bed. I dim the lights to the point where i can barely see where i m walking, however she cries even harder when the room is too dark. Plus during the day time she only sleeps in my lap or beside me on the bed. She started doing this one she turned 1. This has made me resign from my job and hardly do my daily chores.
      I did initially try to put her sleep in her sleep sack but in those 10 days she would sleep only 12-14 hours a day and wake up after 10-15 min and then she was more cranky. Please help me

      Hi Maha sounds like sleep is tiring for you both. Have you had time to watch my videos on newborn sleep? One is on what to expect with newborn sleep and the other is on 7 sleep tips. I think these might be helpful. I have found that swaddling babies this young with their arms down by their body makes falling to sleep and staying asleep easier for babies. I was always stressed that if I swaddled with a cloth I wouldn’t do it tight enough so I used the Halo sleeping sack which was great. When babies are swaddled and they fall asleep in your arms they will stay asleep when you put them in a cot because their startle reflex isn’t activated. Maybe worth giving it a try again?

    This was ACTUALLY USEFUL and easy to do!
    I didn't want to click on this video at first, because I thought it was yet another one on "put your baby drowsy but awake" and "set a schedule" bullcr*p.
    But it was great! Thanks.

    Yes! This really helped my baby. He settles within minutes when I go into a dark room.

    My pediatrician told me during the day to put baby to sleep with light so he can tell the difference between day and night. He is 2 month so he is still very little and he sleeps on me most of the times but i do feel he is sleeping better when its pitch black . He is not going to confuse day and night with this ? Great videos . Thank you so much.

    Another way to blackout a room when you travel: black trash bags and tape or aluminum foil. Makes a huge difference and you can get them at any grocery store in any country if you don’t have or forgot to travel with your own blackout blinds.

    Interesting. At parenting classes we had at our hospital (where I later gave birth), they specifically said keep it bright and normal sounds during the day, quiet and dark at night, so they learn to distingush during day and nightime.

    Here in Italy people don't put their babies to sleep in pitch dark rooms and babies sleep just as well/bad as anywhere else. My baby doesn't sleep in a completely dark room and sometimes she's able to connect sleep cycles, sometimes she's not 🤷

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Florencia, thanks for your comment. Sounds like you are having some great sleeps with your little one. Over the years I have found for those that are finding sleep difficult and linking sleep cycles at 5/6 months (when they develop this ability and progress past catnapping) then a dark room makes it significantly easier.

    • @florenciabalori3625

      oh no, sleep is horrible over here, just wanted to point out it's just a cultural thing I guess, I began obsessing about catnapping and asking everyone about their experience and nobody cared if their baby catnapped, and they never tried to extend naps and stuff, they're more like "oh, well"

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  3 роки тому +3

      I found with my little ones when I accepted catnaps are developmentally normal and to ‘embrace the catnaps’ I was significantly less obsessed with my baby’s sleep. Looks like Italian are a step ahead with embracing the catnaps!

    In the UK they recommend that a baby under 6 months sleeps in the same room as an adult present, be it in the day (downstairs) as well as night time (upstairs). So it's a little difficult to have it pitch black during the day to help the sleep cycles...

      @@emmj.m.c.1310 my baby had a terrible choking incident at 2 months that ended with us in A&E with him. So it's made me very anxious and even if guidelines didn't recommend it, I would still have him downstairs with me for naps... but with the older children it does get a little noisy during the day and it can disturb him. So I will start getting him used to upstairs from 6 months.

      @@yanabanana5086 Hi Yana, no I'm happy to share. My little one has always been a "vomity" baby from birth, spitting up a substantial amount of milk with almost every feed. I think it's important to note because this type of choking is rare.
      That evening he was a little unsettled so I gave him a spoon of gripe water for the first time about half an hour after his bottle. A few minutes later he began coughing and brought up a mix of milk and mucus. Despite vomiting everywhere (it was a lot!) he was silently choking on more unable to cry or speak or breathe. I tried hard for what seemed like longest time tapping him hard to get him going but nothing worked. When he started turning a funny colour I ran out to my neighbour who called 999. Thankfully he started crying again after a couple of minutes. The medics came and checked him over, recommended we take him to a&e incase of aspiration as he was so tiny at the time. The paediatrician there said this type of extreme choking is rare but can happen. I believe the excess mucus is a result of reflux. But because he has always been a healthy weight I kept being told he will outgrow it. So back to my point in the original post, if he had been asleep when this happened, particularly upstairs away from me it's entirely possible that I wouldn't have even realized. I don't want to freak anyone out, it's a rare occurence but it happens. I couldn't risk it again.
      I believe the UK guidelines are because of SIDS. If the baby sleeps in the same room (safely) it can reduce the chances. Sorry for the lengthy post!

If we lay her awake in the bed she is crying really hard.. how do we fix that she can fall asleep on her own without our help? We see and notice her sleep signals, make it dark, sing a song, put her in bed.. hope u can help us out. Do we need to let her cry? But for how long? My heart breaks everytime we try this. Also when it comes to feed in and changing her if I have to turn a light on she completely wakes up, whereas in dim light that doesn’t change she stays drowsy. Have you got any tips for navigating this?

    Thanks for your video. I agree with respecting the natural dark and light period (which means no artificial strong lights when it's dark outside for the baby and the mother if she is breasting because her milk will contain the right dosage of melatonin for the baby) BUT I disagree with the black room during the day, because it will precisely disrupt the day/night baby's cycle through the hormonal way. My question : isn't the artificial light at the wrong moment (when it's the night outside) that disrupt the cycle and make it harder during the day? My baby sleep very well during the day with light, I do the same and think it helps my brain not to loose the track of time. Sleep is more difficult for everyone if there are stress, new places, delay in go to sleep when the baby become just a little fussy,... In addition, if we know that mother milk contains melatonin when it's dark, what about feeding breast-pump milk collected at the wrong hour of the day or feeding with synthetic milk (which just contains no melatonin / cortisol at all)? These are leads, I'll be happy to have your scientifical point of view on them.

    • @marosteeha
      @marosteeha 2 роки тому +2

      Not a scientist just a new single dad. I think that you might be putting too much focus on the day and kight or sleep cycles and less focus on sleep quality. We all know that babies (and adults) require a lot of sleep and good quality sleep on order to develop and function properly. So why lower the baby's sleep quality during the day when we know that they asolutelly need it?

      Hi Ilaria I would definitely start by darkening the room that you want him to sleep in and considering using a white noise machine. I would say that your little one is using you as a sleep aid which is lovely but it means that he will only sleep in your arms or when being held. I would think about starting a bedtime routine- go into a dark room, put sleeping bag on, sing a song and then place in cot or rock and place in cot. The difficulty with rocking is he is still needing you to get to sleep. You just want to get him use to sleeping in the cot for some naps. And the routine.

      I had the same problem! I had to hold my baby's paci for him a lot! Its very hard
      So I looked up how to help your baby keep their paci on their own and this blog called Happiest baby on the Block it says when baby has it in their mouth during the day pull at it and it causes them to suck harder because you are pulling it away and to do that to help them develop how hard to suck to keep it in their mouths. At least for my son it's really helped I don't have to hold it for him now after doing that for a short time

    My 9.5m old catnaps during the day or doesn’t sleep at all, she used to be such an amazing sleeper then we hit 9 months and she regressed, big time, and she’s gone back to not wanting to sleep. I’m not sure what I should do right now

      Also, when they start to crawl/walk it is a big development change, and their brain needs to process it and sometimes they get overwhelmed and wake up.

      as soon as they are able to roll over you should stop, just in case they do in their sleep, they will have their hands free to help themselves if they need to. but still always lay your baby to sleep on their back. first time mum and that's what we were told. hope that helps.

    Okay please help!
    My baby wakes up after 30mibs napping crying, and I mean screaming crying! And he does this for anywhere around 5-10mins. After that I can either settle him or he's just up and refuses to go back to sleep.
    Also because of this I have to hold him while napping. If he wakes up and I'm not there he loses his mind and will not go back to sleep :(

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Рік тому +1

      Instead of following a rigid routine at this age I recommend following their natural pattern. Their circadian rhythm is still developing and some will still wake at night for a feed or two. It’s perfectly normal at this age.

      If they are in a safe space like a crib with no toys or blankets, you can do this from birth.

    Does this NOT help anyone else? Each time we try to put our 3 month baby to sleep wether it's day or night, we cant go near a dark room without him starting to scream for about half an hour. Not with the feeling it's the darkness itaelf but rather the "we are going to try to put you to sleep" kind of screams.

    Do you have any videos on how to stop baby from falling asleep only on the boob? We have a dark room but our 9 month old only falls asleep during the night when she's attached to the boob. Sometimes after the initial feed, I can put her in her cot but she wakes up in 2-3 hours to feed and then doesn't let go and we fall asleep like this and it's frustrating as I'd like to sleep better and not be clinged onto as she's clingy all day long anyway. I would really want to breastfeed one or two times a day until she's well over a year old, our eldest had one night feed until she was 1y 10 mnths old but she was able to sleep through the night and be de-attached from boob no problem. Youngest is a clinger on the boob but doesn't take to a pacifier. Same thing during the day, if I'm not going for a walk with her in a carrier or stroller, it's boob, boob, boob, during the whole nap. Ideally I could do chores while she naps but now I can't even take a bathroom break in peace because she wakes up without boob. Gladly would switch to anything so I could get stuff done around the house.

    • @larbakatariina1912
      @larbakatariina1912 Рік тому

      The kicker is she won't sleep in the baby carrier while we're home so if I go outside with her, she won't be attached to boob but I won't get stuff done either as I'm walking outside instead of doing house chores inside
