Kami band wears white burial kimonos and white face paint. It is called "死に装束 (shini-shozoku)", literally meaning “burial clothes”. Literally raised from the death to play for BabyMetal. Also a homage to Black Metal (aka corpse paint).

I'd say Budokan is one of the smaller big stages they've done in Japan. The thing about Budokan is its legacy and the symbolism. The capacity is only about 15K. This enormous stage makes the audience here maybe about 10-12K. When they do their normal big shows in Japan it's usually at least 20K with Tokyo Dome being the biggest at 55K. They sold out two consecutive nights the only time they've played there so far.
I love that you can still hear from metal-heads that Babymetal is a fad. They made their stage debut november 28th 2010, so I guess it is a 10 year old fad. About Kami-band wearing make-up and the robes I think is partly a nod to some other masked bands but I think it also has to do with their role as back-ups. They are a bunch of session musicians that are supposed to be anonymous, kind of like Ghost for example. It is easier to change a member if they're not part of the band. I believe Boh only has missed 7-8 shows since they started using live musicians before their last US - EU-tour. Since Hideki started playing drums with them he hasn't missed many shows either. The guitarists have been shared between four people most of the time. For a while it was almost always Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Takayoshi Ohmura with Leda Cygnus as the mostly used back-up. Since Mikio passed away they've used ISAO fairly often as well. This last tour they used western musicians for the US and EU-leg of the tour.
A lot of people have opinions about the Kami-band and the system of using session musicians. The way I see it is something like this. So and Moa are Babymetal, both officially and in reality. The people around them are interchangeable in the same way a pop-artists have musicians and dancers that are there to support the artist. The upside with doing it like this is that they can use absolutely brilliant musicians who for one reason or other have chosen to be session musicians. I know a few of them have family, kids and so on...
The downside is a lot of whining metal heads complaining it isn't metal. I'd say Babymetal is one of the most metal bands out there. They don't care about the norm of a what a metal band should and shouldn't do. They don't care how a metal band should act, what they should say and how to portray themselves publicly. Their reaction in interviews when asked about the people don't liking them is usually kind of it is nice to upset a few people as well. They do their own thing and if some people don't like it doesn't seem bother them even a little bit. Talk about giving the finger to the conventions of metal! Isn't giving the finger to conventions the most metal thing there is?

Like how you put that basically the Metal bands playing the normally whats expected ( i put some devil worship in and a scream ) almost mainstream and BabyMetal are the rebels giving society the finger and
Saying "So what this is how we do it".

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 4 роки тому +20

Exactly this. Metal is about attitude and rebellion, not following the social norm, breaking the rules. Metal got so far up its own arse that the elitists and gatekeepers invented their own social norms and somewhere they have their unwritten rules about what constitutes a "real band" and what is "trve metal" - the elitists have become the establishment. Babymetal have ignored those social norms and unwritten rules and have done things their own way and effectively put a finger up to the establishment ... and that attitude can surely only be "trve metal".

6:54 The very technical musical term you were looking for is ヘッドバン (heddoban), Japanese pronunciation of "headbang". :)
The Kami Band's (= Band of Gods) outfit is called 死装束 (shinishouzoku) "death attire". It's basically what you bury people in. It developed from kimono worn by Buddhist monks and pilgrims. The use of shinishozoku by Kami Band goes back to the MV of this very song, where a 15-y.o. girl prays to metal god and gets possessed by it.

Matt M I wonder if that is because they started using a different band in the US and UK (possibly all of Europe) shows? They announced it at the beginning of the shows from what I have read from others, but maybe the feel people will think they’ve been cheated out of seeing the actual Kami Band, which I know in some way I would, but those guys do have other projects they’re working on, so touring the world doesn’t make that accessible to them. Perhaps they’ll tour the whole time once the band is back on the road, at least that first year or so, I guess we’ll see.

Good reaction - apart from cutting the final drama and the gong, please don't do that. Babymetal is a live performance act first a recording artist second, so if they put some theatre into the performance they do it for a reason - they're not just another band playing songs from the album. With Babymetal their albums are more like a preview of the music you will hear at the show, a bit like the sound track to a movie, but you need to see the movie to get the context.
The Kami Band (Kami means God or Spirit) dress as they do (traditional burial robes and corpse face paint) because they are supposedly the Gods or Spirits of guitar, bass and drums sent to support Babymetal in the metal resistance against the Idol system which was smothering metal and rock in Japan so they got no air time or exposure on TV etc.
The Kami Band's very first appearance was for the encores at Legend I in October 2012 and there was a short video explaining their presence first explaining along the lines that Idol groups have great numbers and should one member fall they will be replaced, so in their fight to get metal back into the peoples' consciousness and resistance against the system Babymetal are to be helped by the Kami Band, summoned by the Fox God.
Here is that performance with the video at the start - and as it happened the very first song they did was 'Headbanger' ua-cam.com/video/hYHzzPzUIM8/v-deo.html

Where playing similar size venue than Budokan overseas less than 2 years later Wembley Arena.
Same year, so less than 3 years later Tokyo Dome (55k), 2 days in a row, sold out. Two completely different setlists. :-)
This year is their 10th year, still growing their crowds, playing bigger venues, selling more albums.
They actually performed twice in Canada (own show in Toronto and Heavy Montreal).

I stumbled upon them good three years ago. The best thing I ever discovered when it comes to metal music. Sadly, I did not manage to see them live so far. But I own several Blu-Ray discs they released over the years. The 2014 Budokan shows are amongst them (and they are available as a western release for a more than reasonable price). The amount of energy exudes even from the live footage is unreal!
They don't do long shows, that last 90 minutes or more, any more. But they also got mostly rid off of these transitional things between the actual songs. So the song-per-gig-value hasn't dropped this much.

Only the Fox God knows why the Kami Band looks like they do. They have been sent by him to help the girls unite the world in Metal. In traditional Japan people wore white robes when mourning the dead, perhaps that’s where it comes from.
In my personal opinion, the reason is probably twofold:
    - The scary appearance increases the clashing between them and the the girls in their cute outfits. That‘s what BABYMETAL is all about, fusing seemingly opposing things to create something new that’s more than the sum of its parts.
    - The band was originally meant to remain in the background anonymously. The line-up wasn‘t fixed, members were exchanged, but that was supposed to go unnoticed. The focus was supposed to be just on the girls.
The latter failed somewhat, since we quickly got fascinated by the insane musicians. With time they started to get their time in the spotlight, but recently they seem to be receding into the background again, which is a real pity. If you‘d like to see more of the band, please check out „Rondo of Nightmare“ with an instrumental intro called „Mischief of the Metal Gods“. Great song and great performance: ua-cam.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/v-deo.html
BABYMETAL‘s concept works perfectly for me, I‘m so glad I have discovered them. It‘s so much more entertaining than everything I have heard before, and I have been a Metal fan for more than 30 years now. They still get a lot of hatred. It’s OK not to like their music or the concept, of course, but people who are denying the talent are just disqualifying themselves from being taken seriously.
BTW, about a year after Budokan, BABYMETAL sold out Tokyo Dome two nights in a row, 55.000 people each. The whole show had epic proportions, it‘s fantastic to watch.

    Brilliant stuff.

Even though Su has a beautiful soprano voice, I love that she sings a lot of this one in a lower register.
    That always sounds great.
'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!!!' was one of their early hits.
Even though the song is about a fifteen year old girl attending her first rock concert, Su was only fourteen when this was recorded.
It's not biographical, but it is a song she could relate to. At that age she was performing on stage, rather than attending concerts.
I wish she got more straight up rockers like this one, she can certainly deliver them.

Hi Temple Music! Good reaction! "Headbanger!" is a song about a girl going to her first metal concert on her 15th birthday. It's easily my favorite song on the first album. I'm a long time metal head, probably older than you are, and BABYMETAL is my favorite band at this point. The Kami Band members wear traditional Japanese burial robes, they're supposed to represent the kami (god/spirit) of their respective instruments as summoned by the Fox God. They changed their outfits in 2018 when the group brought out the "dark side" lore, they were in black robes which I thought was really cool. Then they changed them again for 2019 with the release of the latest album "Metal Galaxy" to fit in with that theme. The biggest issue the fans have with the latest costumes is they put masks on the Kami Band members, partly I think because they actually hired a whole new set of American Kami's at the start of their 2019 tour. They have two "sets" now, "Kamis of the East" and "Kamis of the West". The western Kami's performed on their 2019 US and 2020 European tours, while the eastern Kami's performed at the Japan shows and some one off performances like Glastonbury.

Well, really Babymetal was built around the singer Nakamoto Sukuza. She has a powerful voice and one of the producer of the program "Sakura Gakuin", a former metalhead thinks that her voice is suited for metal so... they try and things happen
The "fox god" comes from a mistake of little children. Think that you´re are teaching what is heavy metal to little girls, and i´m talking about 11-12 years girls and teach who to do the "devil horns" 🤘
That´s easy in west, but think again, in Japan people are buddhist or shinto so the horns say nothing to them. The little girls thinks about the fox you do playing with shadows and the fox is in Japan and most of the orient culture a magical creature. Also guardian protector of the Inari shrines. So someone thinks "hey, this is fun" and use this mistake to create a idea of the "fox god"
As a fact, you can see fox statues in almost any Inari shrine in Japan
Also, this song have a nice "poetry" thing, because the song is about a young girl in her 15 years who goes their first time to a metal concert. In Japanese 15 is pronounce as "yuu--go" or "ten-five" but in this song is "Ichi-go" or "one-five". The fun part is that ichi-go is the word for "strawberry" (ichigo), a fruit associated in young girls with innocence, purity
Also in the music video appears a neck protector to do not damage your neck headbanging. This is a little tribute for X-Japan and their founder and composer Yoshiki. Probably one of the best composers and musicians of the XX century in Japan who needs to wear one for years headbanging on the drums. Think in Yoshiki in someone like Paul McCartney, John Lennon or Mick Jagger in Japan. A legendary artists who change the music and even the mentality of Japan in the 80/90. In Japan there´s music before and after Yoshiki. The final gong is also a tribute for X-Japan
Also think that those girls comes... from Jpop. Just check "Sakura Gakuin", they comes from this group as a subunit
Oh, and a little anecdote. All the videos you see of this song in the Budokan are from the "black night", but they perform this song two times the... why?
You see the barriers on the stage?. The first day they don´t have barriers and one of the little girls: Yui Mizuho got so hyped running that she falls from the stage and the song end with only two of them. Fortunately Yui recovers and join in the next song
Also a note. Some people defends Babymetal because "there´s no rule writed that says metal must be angry or serious". True, but they are not the first to challenge this not writed rule. In Japan musicians thinks that smile while playing is part of the job and... you never see Aldious Playing?
Aldious is and "old" metal band and they have a lot of fun on stage, just check someday some of their works like this one

In Babymetal lore, the backing musicians are "Kami's"... Spirits. Hence the name, Kami Band. In the lore, they are Metal Gods...... God of Drums, God of Bass, Little God of Guitar, Big God of Guitar. They only exist on stage in support of Babymetal, summoned by the Fox God to support Babymetal in their battles. :)

The kami band essentially represent ghosts or spirits. Like the kitsune fox spirit, ghosts also figure very prominently in Japanese folklore. They represent spirits who serve the Fox God and aid and protect the girls in their storyline. In the latest incarnation of the band, they've gone away from the ghost look, and more toward an animistic fox look, with black robes and stylized silver fox masks, as you can see in some of their most recent performances.

Great reaction! Great analysis. I never heard the Weird Al theory but I see what you're saying. They could have only pulled this off in Japan. Anywhere else, they would have tried to make the girls into fake metal heads and the whole thing would have been stupid. They don't mock metal in any way. They honor metal music and they raise the bar as far as I'm concerned.
My only criticism of the reaction is, Never cut anything out and suggest its unimportant! They are performance artists. They don't put things into the performance for people to throw out. My understanding is the last scene is in honor of the drummer from X-Japan who apparently would sometimes collapse from exhaustion at the end of a long song.

The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Su-metal (Vocal and Dance), Moametal (Scream and Dance), and Yui Mizuno as "Yuimetal" (Scream and Dance), with the concept of a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto's departure from Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal released their eponymous debut album in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide on April 1, 2016, charting well internationally for a Japanese band. Babymetal has also embarked on several tours, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia.
On October 19, 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) had decided to leave the band due to poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017.[3] Since her departure, the band has performed with one or more backup dancers called at live performances. In 2019, the band introduced three backup dancers that were present in a rotation on each live show to form a trio with Moametal and Su-metal, with the dancers being called Avengers.

They also sold out consecutive nights at Yokohama Arena, which holds around 17,500. More Babymetal lore: Yui fell off the stage at the other night of this two-night series during this song. BTW, the same choreographer is used for both Babymetal and their Amuse "big sister" supergroup, Perfume.

Many comments providing historical background and LORE (*shudder*), so I don't think I'll add to that. It's all good stuff though.
Anyway, nice take on the musicianship. Most reactors are focused on the girls and the drums. "OH! THEY'RE SO CUTE!" and "Oh my God, that drummer is INSANE!" are the typical reactions. They are, of course, absolutely correct on both counts. But to see a reaction from someone that understands the process is really very rewarding. There are reactions from a theatrical director and a vocal teacher. Those are two of my favorites. Your reaction to this song has been added to that rarefied air.
People are saying "Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischiefs of Metal Gods intro)". That's a good choice. Always a good choice. However... If you want musical diversity and difficulty - and the true fans know where I'm going here - you really need to seek out "Tales of the Destinies" from Tokyo Dome 2016. The only place I have found it is on Dailymotion, and I can't STAND Dailymotion. But for Tales, you should be able to suffer through it. Just make sure your adblocker is up to date and your VPN is working in overdrive.
Seriously, Tales of the Destinies. Tokyo Dome 2016 Red Night. It is a little bit of everything stuffed into eight and a half minutes of prog rock infused weirdness, but it works. And if you have another eight minutes to spare, just watch it through to the end. The transition from Tales to "The One" is breathtaking.
So, against my own better judgement, I will post the Dailymotion link. But you'll have to put it together yourself:
    https[colon]//www[dot]dailymotion[dot]com/video/k6w1YdkObN4XuGr7x3l?start=1480
You'll also need to set the rez to 1080. It defaults to 480, which is insane.

I can understand the concerns people had about Babymetal when they arrived on the scene. What they were doing was reminiscent of the mindless, gimmicky entertainment of a lot of mainstream music and yeah, I get that. I don't want metal becoming anothet soulless money making machine churning out brands instead of music either.
However, I think Babymetal have a good balance going. I love them and it's okay to have music that's just meant to be fun and entertaining, as long as they take the actual music they make seriously. And they do.
I think it's brilliant that they made up an entire mythology for themselves - reminds me of Gwar or Nekrogoblikon and their whole thing.

Yeah, because US metal isn't about labels churning out money, right? There is no such thing as a truly organic band anymore; if there ever was. Also, I'm in the UK where there has been no mainstream metal since Iron Maiden had their last hit in the nineties. We don't have an alternative chart and your mainstream bands are not even known over here, except by the metal community. Ask the average person who Korn or Slipknot are and they'll have no idea.
And maybe you're right if you're talking about the mainstream music industry and metal bands who were born in that sphere, but there are countless of organic bands out there that don't exist in that tiny microcosm of the elite, where artists are treated as not much more than performing monkeys and financial commodities.

They did when I started making music for money in 1966; they still do. I just think it is wrong to eschew commercialism, because it is how we manage to stay musicians; otherwise, we go broke and break up. LOL IOW, everything in entertainment has a gimmick of some sort. I mean, the minute you sell a logo t-shirt, you would have sold out in Clapton's view of music. I just do not like calling one guy's hook another guy's gimmick. One of the more telling stories is the "Miracle at Sonisphere." Budokan and Tokyo Dome were huge accomplishments, but those were done in their home country where they were already pretty well-established. Their performance at the Sonisphere festival is one of which legends are made! They were originally scheduled to play the side stage, where they expected to play to a smaller crowd of just a few thousand, many of whom knew them and followed them. But at the last second, they were mysteriously relocated to the main stage, suddenly playing to the entire 20,000+ crowd of European metalheads, most of whom were there for Korn and other mainstream metal bands, and had no idea who Babymetal were! They were plagued from the start with technical difficulties, the girls made some nervous mistakes, and Yui's skirt was falling apart. It was Spinal Tap in real life, as I've heard it told! But they put on such a great performance that they had won over that entire main stage crowd by the end of their set!

“I am so honored that we are confirmed to play Sonisphere Festival UK,” declares SU-METAL.
“There are so many different types of artists playing this festival but I hope to deliver a one and only, unique style metal - BABYMETAL - even to those who will see us for the very first time. This will be our very first time in the UK, which makes us nervous, yet excited just imagining what type of people will come and see us, what sort of show it will end up being, and whether the audience will enjoy our show. We’ll hopefully get to see Metallica-san’s performance again after witnessing them at Summer Sonic festival in Japan which we are very excited about.”
As fate would have it The music gods saw fit to reunite BABYMETAL with legendary metal group Metallica at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage! Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set.

I simply knew that a fan of Devin would also love BM! The music from both artists is just too awesome and mood-lifting! :)
Most of your questions have already been answered by "The One" in the comment section, so i won't recite the whole thing again.
Another thing I'd love to see and makes me curious would be more or less a album reaction/review of their third LP "Metal Galaxy"(Oct. 2019), it's a bit more, well, how should i say that, "progressive?"(consider it a bit like Empath). The album is split in two halfs, the "Light" and the "Dark" side, while it's self-explaining which one is more poppish/proggy and which one is heavier, I'd love to hear your opinion/thoughts and also your analysis of the tracks from your professional standpoint! (So here you have the opportunity to make a 3-4h reaction with ease, even longer if you want xD and "The One" will surely watch it)
Also, if you'd decide to really take on this request, I'd highly appreciate if you'd take the Japanese version of the Album, it has 2 exclusive tracks and both are top notch songs(BBAB and BxMxC, while BxMxC is by far the most favored track on the new album by the whole fanbase it seems).
The last thing I'll have to point out is: if you want to feature the reactions to each song in the video, consider uploading it on vimeo/bitchute with included audio and cut/mute the songs for youtube(copyright strikes are impending if you include the audio... sadly, even tho you'd help them reach a broader audience, but that's a thing with japanese artists it seems)
so, enough of my selfish request, I'm really happy to see how much fun you had while reacting to this, keep up the great work, stay safe and stay metal!
    cheers

Having extra songs in japan prevents this and actually makes people from the west import stuff from japan.
As an example, japanese fans importet the budokan show because it's much cheaper in the west. Babymetal hasn't released any Blu Ray/DVD since then in the West. I'm just speculating but this might be a reason. :)

To be fair, that was one of the reasons I've heard. But Koba likes to throw out things that may just be part of the Mythology of Babymetal. He really is correct when they say only the Fox God knows! 🤘🦊🤘

If you wanna "ear more bass" - and pretty much all other instruments for that matter - please listen to « Mischiefs of Metal Gods»: instrumental stampede galore.

I love their new album. It’s less straight metal and more adventurous and incorporates a lot of musical styles into the metal for a very unique sound. And the performance is much better because the singer has become phenomenal and the dancing is more elegant because they’re grown up now and their performances seem very grown up, too. It’s very, very cool comparing old Babymetal and new Babymetal.

The band are known as "The Mischiefs of God" and their costume is probably linked to that

Another song, like you did with nightwish poet and the pendulum, was ended too soon. At least this one only had like 20 seconds left of them getting to the gong

You didn’t let su hit the gong at the end. The floor opened behind them and a gong rises up they all crawl on the platform and it rises up and Su hits the gong which makes it a great ending to the song
