Addendum for people who’re interested 1) IMAX had 3 projectors which could do 15/70 - GT, SR (Single Rotor) and MPX (Multiplex). SR was cheaper in two discrete units for 3D, and one was fine for 2D. The TCL Chinese Theatre used a single SR unit for the 70mm presentations for Oppenheimer and Dune. Not GT. MPX was a cheaper version made in 2000s for South Asian countries and multiplex retrofits 2) The real reason why IMAX Digital is 1.90 is because Texas Instruments doesn’t make a DLP projector chip of a higher resolution or a different ratio, and 1.90 is the max as per the DCI standard. 3) IMAX Laser also has 3 variants - Dual Laser, Commercial Laser and XT - Dual Laser is able to do 1.43 due to a special anamorphic lens which desqueezes a 1.43 image from a 1.90 DLP readout - CoLa is the one BFI uses, custom designed by IMAX without a prism and two lens outputs for 3D, both L and R images are projected simultaneously in a vertically stacked manner - XT is basically again a cheaper but newer laser projector which has a single lens output and alternates each frame for 3D XT can have 12ch or 6ch sound depending on what contract the theatre takes up.
Hello Mr. Bored Tech, thank you for making and sharing this video. That's a great video! First of all, I would like add some information about IMAX sound formats and IMAX with Laser technology. According to Giant Screen Cinema Association about IMAX audio mixes, there are three types of IMAX sound formats: 1. IMAX 5.0 (IMAX Digital Xenon, 1.90:1 Aspect Ratio), please note that some IMAX Single Laser Theaters are limited to IMAX 5.0. 2. IMAX 6.0 (IMAX 15/70 mm Film, 1.43:1 Aspect Ratio), please note that IMAX 15/70 mm Film Theaters can play IMAX 5.0 mix version (separate audio track, 15/70mm audio version) too, depending on the sound mix of movie. 3. IMAX 12.0 (IMAX Laser), please note that some IMAX Digital Xenon Theaters are installed with 12-channel sound system plus sub-bass system and capable of playing IMAX 12.0 content. And of course, those three types of IMAX sound formats do not have dedicated LFE channel in the mix formats. There are also three generation of IMAX with Laser Projectors: 1. First Generation, IMAX GT Laser Projection System (4K Dual Laser Projectors, 1.43:1 Aspect Ratio, each projectors has single-lens); 2. Second Generation, IMAX Commercial Laser (CoLa) Projection System (4K Single Laser Projector, 1.90:1 Aspect Ratio, CoLa Projector has dual-lens); 3. Third Generation, IMAX XT Laser Projection System (4K Single Laser Projector, 1.90:1 Aspect Ratio, XT Laser Projector has single-lens). Thank you very much!
La Geode is an omnimax in Paris due to reopen soon after closing for refurbishment in 2018 - I think they’ve kept the dome, it would be amazing to see a tour!
Fun fact about the LaGeode IMAX Dome in Paris: Due to French national pride, it is one of the few, if not the only IMAX that does not use the usual loudspeaker system, but a custom-made one by the French manufacturer Cabasse.
Cinesphere is actually fitted with a regular screen rather than a dome, it's also the first permanent commercial IMAX theatre there is! Great vid as always
its a shame BFI didnt get the dual laser when upgraded after taking the waterloo site control back from odeon, i suspect cost was an issue. as BFI IMAX has better seating options than EMPIRE Leicester sq dual-laser-IMAX(which only has 3 usable rows)
No. As already 1000 times eyplained, only reason was no space. After all, it was a blessing decision to keep a 1570GT in CENTER Position, that's really someting theses Days. And the Cola System has a sharper Picture that a Dual System, because the Dual System has an intended half-Pixel-Offset between the two Projectors, which hardly spoken, results in a softer and not pin sharp resolution. It's a loss of Information, most people will not notice, but you can see it when you pay attention. None of that comes close to the absolute overkill 15/70mm projection
cost is always the issue. heck the reason why odeon lost (running)the site after 11years was the issue of whos going to pay for the overdue 4k install... i go to both sites regularly for over ten years and the difference to the picture is noticeable.
Whats up with the mixture of subs? I see typical 4×12" Eminence subs, yet directly below them I see what appears to be 18"s ... Any thoughts? Also, showing the small ceiling flown clusters, it appeared as if they were Danley Synergy designs.
BFI IMAX has two systems installed, one for IMAX other one 7.1 for DTS or DOLBY. You can this video for more detail: ua-cam.com/video/URsQrH7lQkg/v-deo.html
The XT laser was another single RGB laser projector (newly installed at IMAX Blackpool) introduced in 2021 and was based on Barco's SP4K-40 projector, not sure which one the single COLA laser is based on which uses a dual head for 3D, the GT Grand Theatre is based on the 6P Barco DP4K-60L RGB laser projector. I prefer using a single head and the dual XT system could be done as a dual projector system and used in the same way as the GT to have one projector dedicated for the left eye and one projector dedicated for the right eye, as well as doubling brightness it allows doubling of the frame rate.
Try contacting the Planetarium in Copenhagen, they have an IMAX Dome screen, and they have been showing OmnIMAX/IMAX Doma since 1989 so maybe they also have the old 35mm sound playback machine.

KD bhai aap idhar bhi ho? Aapka hi video dekhke yaha aya hu recommendation se.
I think XT and CoLa projector are almost quality.
Yo yo yo kd.....
IMAX had 4 projector models for 1570, right? GT 3D as well.
Hi KD, do you have any idea of what projector is used in phoenix lower parel imax?
You missed the ones no one knows: imax SR, imax HD and imax XT
Another weird thing is that you chose traumpalast photo to demo 1.43

IMAX 1570 is still the gold standard.
That's true! I wonder, will we ever see 20/70 or 25/70?

And there is 3rd generation IMAX with Laser project called IMAX XT, which uses 5.1 audio. The 1st IMAX XT was built in Shanghai, China, 2021.
Great video, thanks. Can't hear that tech stuff about IMAX often enough 😅
That's one of the reasons why I started making these videos.
Thanks for the informative video!
Loving the visuals provided in this one Bored_tech

IMAX 1570 film format:
IMAX 65 millimeters horizontal negative
(1570 horizontal print)
70.41 × 52.63 millimeters frame
11,734 × 8,771 = 102,918,914 digital equivalent pixels resolution
Thank you my friend.
My life was forever changed when I experienced Adrenaline Rush in the Omnimax in Vancouver as a child. It blew my mind!!

Great T shirt!
It would be very awesome to see a imaxdome backstage tour
Love the Cineworld IMAX leicester the sound is soo powerful you could fee the thumper in your chest in Dune 2
Ask them what is the crossover (hz) for IMAX 12.0 bass management
The domes can play movies, force awakens was shown in a few of them
I'm sure the image was geometrically distorted. I doubt that someone could enjoy that.
Btw I know Mr. Ford and been in the booth two times, before and after works
what about xt laser?
