    Saw Dune 2 here, now my favourite cinema in London. Picture, sound and seating were all absolutely perfect.

      This is good to hear, going there this evening instead of IMAX

    • @ChrisRowe

      @@angeloedades went to the Cineworld imax the next day and the image there was much more uneven, heavy vignetting, and more muted and the sound not as clear or bassy. Also the seats there are terrible if you’re taller than 5ft 9

      So I'm currently debating whether to go watch Dune here or watch it in 70mm elsewhere? what would you recommend?

    • @ChrisRowe
      @ChrisRowe 5 місяців тому +1

      If you want the largest screen possible with the full 15 perf 70mm imax experience, but not very comfrotable seats, then I suggest the BFI Imax, but that;'s sold out for weeks. If you're ok with a smaller screen but incredible sound, picture and the most comfortable seats, I would go here and sit in the front two rows, and essentially get the same field of view as Imax anyway. I sat in the middle of the front row and eassentially had my feet "in" the movie as the screen goes all the way down to the floor and there's a lot of carpet between it and the front row reclining seats. Easier to get tickets here too

      Great! I heard some people complained about a lack of bass in Dolby Cinemas compared to IMAX. How was it in this particular one?

  • @CF-uh2xl
    @CF-uh2xl 2 роки тому +16

    The cinema is underground not for acoustic reasons but since the whole block (inc. the old Odeon West End) was redeveloped as a hotel. A replacement cinema was a requirement, but unlike hotel rooms, does not require windows. It's built as a "box within a box" design to isolate it acoustically from the hotel, lest the Atmos sound system disturbs guests. ;-)
    Incidentally, the building is one of the deepest habitable commerical buildings in the world, extending 30m below ground level!
    There is some physical separation between the two screens, rather than sharing internal partition walls, so there shouldn't be any leakage between them, which is a benefit over some multi-screen cinemas. Also, the Odeon Leicester Square had upgraded soundproofing installed when it was refurbished as a Dolby Cinema. (Not that I ever heard anything there other than possibly the air conditioning, although apparently some people have noticed some slight vibration from nearby Tube lines.)

    After watching this video, I have visited the London West End Cinema and so far the best one with perfect sized screen and comfy reclining seats. Thank you so much for the video and I wouldn’t of known to visit a great odeon cinema if it wasn’t for this video :)

    I used to visit the old Odeon West End on occasions(as it did show films not on their first run in the West End). This does seem like a very good reworking of the old cinema - updating it with the latest technology. I suppose if I will add on a slight negative note, it's that they probably lost the old 70 mm film projector(which they used for "The Master" and "Interstellar") - which is shame, as it would nice to keep that option open for people.

    • @davidjames579

    Amazing review, I found it yesterday and have watched all cinema ones now!
    I am planning where to watch The Batman and have decided on this one for now, would you stick with E10/11 as the best seats in the house overall, not just as the sweet spot for sound?

    • @boredtech

      Thanks for watching my videos. I loved seats E10/11, sound was great and screen was big enough.

    Hi bored_tech, another amazing and well produced video. Great review as well. The cinema looks amazing. I would have preferred a Scope screen with moveable side masking going to 1.85:1 and 1.37:1. It's a shame, as it's a purpose built cinema. Will you be doing a review of their Screen 2? Dolby 7.1 sound and a single laser projector. Overall it looks a fab cinema. You mentioned the difference in sound between three Block Buster movies. In the West End it's not unusual for Dolby or another qualified engineer to check the Dolby EQ before the opening of a new movie. The Studios request and pay for this. Thank you.

      I do my own customize eq for my private THX cinema. pink floyd 'The wall' dvd shown to guests last week on the 38.000kw THX six-track Dolby Stereo with split surrounds and the baby boom track felt like an earthquake rumble at times. one friend and his other guest two girls said "it felt like having my body massage". one other friend "my butt feels like its tinkering for a week". Yes they enjoyed 'the wall' in THX sound system with up to x115 JBL speakers at 38.000kw THX, 15.12. 6/8 . no need to for me to ever go to an odeon when odeon don't have THX. or even my overhead surround layout that goes way beyond the substandard basic stereo pairs per each zone. mine simply goes further which is so simple and easy to do and gives far better overhead sound localization and is only one of its kind in the uk.

      overhead surround expansion PLIIIxPlus with Dolby cheap as fish and chips SA10 x3 of heights 1 , 2 and 3 are expanded with three middle channels placed between the basic stereo pairs or simply put as, Dolby LCR overheads, what no body saw that?? it was obvious to me when i first saw and heard this at the Empire Leicester Square, 2013, with star trek into darkness, dolby atmos. as ex projectionist retired for UCI and Warner Bros, I know what to look for, listen for and feel for.
      Also this THX cinema uses, below matrix surround! where certain sounds can pan underneath/below the Irwin cinema rocker seats, yeah try doing that at home. substandard cinemas can only do surround speakers that not changed much in layout design since 1940 and mid 60's to , nothing much changes and the overhead surround only goes halfway up then back down to directional speakers behind the screen or the surrounds. mine goes from floor to middle height of the surrounds or screen channels up to the ceiling, depending on the mix and what is mixed with steering of the phase of plus phase and negative anti-phase signals. and thou most of it is matrix, its way better than, "upmixer" dolby labs manufacturers call it now. upmixer is just another fancy brand name, just as long they don't say "matrix" which is really what it is. just a hybrid matrix with some relay switching that can be heard when AVR is switched.

      Lucasfilm Ltd THX sound system 3417 x3 of them I own. one may have come from Empire Licester Square as it has the early THX badge design or may be High Wycombe or Warner West End as all later THX installs in uk used the newer THX badge design.
      Anyway as for 'the wall' not favorite movie of mine, i only got it as a friend of his friends wanted to hear it in Lucasfilm Ltd THX sound system.
      Also the laser 4k projector I have isn't as good as 35mm Vic V projector was with changing aperture plate and lens flip over , masking change and sound format fader adjustment all within few seconds. video projectors are so slow by many seconds, now then. no masking used in my home i see no point for masking anymore as commercial cinemas have phased it out.
      my fiend asked me when is next presentation?
      I may do a sci-fi Star Trek marathon in similar way as Empire Leicester Square, as I can still feel how it, sounded, felt like with each 35mm to 70mm and bass getting dynamic with each movie. Even star trek III was impressive sat middle BB row seat 22 centre - line I wanted AA 22 but was sold out and is only 2 feet distance between the seats oh I guess that's like -0.001 dB less more lol. LCR I could localize since I know how LCR worked or L Lc C Rc R works. I use five screen JBL behind my AT screen.
      yeah star trek III where captain kirk is kicking that klongon off the cliff with all the bass kick in centre while earthquaking or planetQuaking or GenesisQuaking in THX on stage L R without any distraction, I just felt and heard, was listening to soundtrack dynamic range detail that not even the local cinema ABC Bournemouth, could do that with 35mm that I seen so many times before experiencing Empire Licester Square, JBL Dolby THX sound system and in that order, JBL came first 1927, then Dolby 1971 and then THX 1983.
      star trek II was also impressive with foley effects even felt in row BB 22, what distance 20 meters to those JBL 4675A within that THX baffle wall, 20 meters, now that was very impressive that I not even heard felt with local new odeon bh2 doesn't come anywhere near or close to a proper THX sound system.
      I felt captain kick putting his feet up on the chair in front of him, felt his shoes/boots against my body at 20 meters distance and that is soft dynamic range range scene.
      Those JBL 4675A in my opinion best cinema speaker ever made for THX sound system. I have to settle with x5 JBL 4673A in small room, lol they sound like earthTHXquake! and that's with the JBL subs baby boom LFE muted. lol
      Surrounds have bass on star trek originals.
      star trek III was impressive with the enterprise going to warp speed. I could feel the war core engines being engaged on the bridge with a jolt! then an huge dynamic range of bass that felt impacting as it went warp speeding off-screen along the surrounds JBL 8330 mkI in the Empire, made me turn my head to the sound of the direction! and this was, sunday 8th october 1989, £10 for 35/70mm Dolby A SR THX sound system, won't get that value at odeon, they be changing £50 and no THX sound system, set of standards.
      oh yeah I have to do a star trek marathon for my friends and guests in THX.

    One glaring issue which does my head in for new cinemas that have an opportunity...your clips show standard ratio Odeon logos before the film...if the screen is this wide..when scope is shown was the height reduced .?...and if so that's a wasted opportunity. All that money spent on seats , sound, foyer/building and escalators with a mini screen as over 80% of films are in scope nowadays..I don't think I'll be wasting money there..fantastic filming of this cinema I must congratulate you though :) ?????

    Hi! I found your review of the IMAX Cineworld Leicester Square very useful as well as this review. Could you please possibly review the Olympic Cinema in Barnes, South West London next? They also have Dolby Atmos surround sound speakers and screen 1 has 66 speakers. It used to be a recording studio in the 1960s and it’s my local independent cinema. Thanks!

    • @boredtech
      @boredtech  2 роки тому

      Oh, interesting. Olympic cinema, The Cinema in the Arches at Battersea and The Cinema at Selfridges are the same company. A funny story that I have asked The Cinema in the Arches to film a tour video, but they said NO.
      Thanks for the recommendation, that's been noted.

    What aspect ratio is the Dolby screen, 1.85:1 or 2.39:1?

    • @boredtech
      @boredtech  Рік тому +2

      I believe it's closer to 1.85:1 as there is black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. But they are so black that they are barely noticeable.
