    Aaron you are my go to guy when I want to research a new knife. I’ve been collecting knives as far back as I can remember and do quite a bit of researching myself before jumping in on a purchase, but after I watch one of your videos then there’s no question because you are one of my last deciding factors. Thanks for making my wallet cry these last few years since I’ve discovered you page. You seemed to be a well informed and educated in everything knife, an all around good guy and I thoroughly enjoy your videos. KEEP’EM COMING MY FRIEND!!!!!

    Aaron is right on for both the Skyline, I have the carbon fiber with upgraded steel deep carry. It's so light it's excellent for dress-up. Byrd Raven 2 is awesome also, so much I am having it acid wash.

    My favorite EDC knife so far is my full size tiger striped SOG Trident with the 3 point serrations (~$110 USD)my dad had this knife before me for 8 years and this is my 2nd year carrying it, making this knife be in its 10th year of "service" and its never been resharpened and it has been thrashed about quite a lot and it is STILL in mint condition. Highly reccomend

    I just happened to be carrying the Raven 2 in my pocket while watching this video. I’ve carried Spyderco before, but have only had the Raven 2 for a week. I purchased it at the Spyderco store in Golden Colorado while there on vacation with my wife last week. So far a great knife. Definitely lives up to Spyderco quality

    I have to comment I have literally never had a SOG with the piston lock that didn't have blade play there are knives way cheaper that don't have blade play. I will grant the SOG does a great job with aus 8 but there is no excuse for blade play at the price point. Also have to say Cold Steel has lots of light options that don't have blade play.

      I think the newer production knives have no play. I bought a flash 2 recently, was also dubious about getting blade play but none. Mine works pretty decent. Haven't sharpened for 1 month now.

    • @TheNutzandBoltz

      The blade play is real. But my Mini Aegis is so perfect is pocket carry, blade shape and weight that my PM2 and 940 find the shelf more than my pocket.

    I love the Skyline. I have a Spyderco Tenacious that is under $50 and it is a really, really good knife. To me, the perfect edc folder will always be the Benchmade 940 (but not under $50).

    Manix 2 LW was the sharpest knife I've ever owned, lost on a job site...replaced with the SOG aegis on recommendation from your/nut'n's channels. Awesome knife! Love the blade shape and came with a great edge out of the box. Maybe mine is just a little tight but I almost feel that the assisted open spring is unnecessarily strong. Great edc knife nevertheless, and super lightweight. Thanks Aron. Keep it up man God bless

    i carried a sog visionary 2 for ages and loved it. the edge holding wasn't bad considering the usage i got from it. now days i carry a triage by benchmade. it took a bit of fiddling to get the triage to a place where i was happy with it. The first thing i noticed was the difference in weight, man is it heavy compared to the visionary two! the scales on the triage were way too grippy and i had to file them down just to save my pants from literally getting destroyed! the steel and build is far better on the triage and i have been carrying one on me for about four and change years but there are still days i wish i was carrying my visionary instead.

      Also if you have a little more cash like $110 check out the Real Steel folding Puuko, it’s all steel, scandi grind a little longer than the Finwolf. Still the Finwolf is like a folding Mora, it’s great.

    Check your local laws! In Las Vegas (Clark County NV) a pocketknife blade must be under 3". A pocket knife 'clipped to your pocket' is a concealed weapon even if it is under 3". It has to be 100% in your pocket. Your local laws will vary greatly.

  • @TimothyRyanFisher

    Gideon. Great review. Don't see you do a lot of Swiss Army knives. I have the Nomad, and Sentinel with the reverse serrations, rather large blade. Same blade on the Soldier, Forrester, Trekker, and Rescue, etc. I know you, and many reviews are anti-combo blade, but this offering has the serrations forward, and a 1 inch straight edge near the guard that is very sharp, and sort if positioned in that perfect wood-craft location on the blade.
    I have noticed over that years that 99% of daily round-town/round the house tasks are handled well by the forward serrations - that I have never sharpened in 3+ years of ownership...making it super practical in terms of being stainless and maintenance free. The 1" straight edge cuts like a razor blade and NOTHING makes curls like it to start a fire, and when you do the paper sharpness test, you will be hard pressed to find a knife that cuts more smoothly than the 1" section of that blade. I also bought the serrated Sentinel with pocket clip ($20-25) because I loved that blade so much on the Nomad...and the Sentinel weighs NOTHING. Might be worth a look! You'd be surprised! God bless you and yours.

    I purchased knives from all of these companies except for Byrd. I can care less for SOG pocket knives. They feel cheaply built. A Cold Steel folder is a must have. It's awesome for the money. I had a Kershaw Skyline with carbon scales and upgraded steel. It was a nice lightweight knife to carry anytime. I never bought a Byrd knife but I willing to bet that you get a lot of bang for your money.

    The highest value knife has to be the lapg in s35vn for $40 shipped and the Spyderco Byrd Raven 2. CTS bd1 for $40 and Spyderco quality and support is a great deal, either knife is great and I've own both of them and they were solid in lockup and had great finishes, the lapg only needed a bit of WD 40 in the pivot and it was perfect, lost the Raven 2 and gave away the lapg.

      I have some of the Spyderco/Byrd knives back from when they first came out. Direct from Sal during a meet up at the Leeds Armouries in the UK to. Very good knives for the money. I remember the fuss over them claimed to be 440C and it turned out to be 8Cr13Mov.
      Prices have crept up though over the past few years.
      I'm UK based but looking at the price of the Delica, which is around $15 more than your $50 limit. I'd get that. Better steel, full fat Spyderco. Worth the extra price for the VG10.
      BD1 used in the current Byrd knives, is Carpenter steels version of Japan made Gin-1 AKA G2 steel. It is not hugely better than 8Cr13Mov. Slightly more carbon and alloys. I'd still spend extra and get VG10 in the Delica.

    Like your channel! How about the Opinels? I know you like them. "Military/Tactical" aside: It's super light weight, razor sharp, solid lock up (open & closed), ergonomic handle (easily modifiable), carbon & stainless options, size options to fit use and hand size, carbon or stainless versions, quality/durable materials/fit/finish, lots of bang for the buck, lots of fun to use, and an elegantly simple design that probably will continue to be an unsurpassed timeless folder that seems to subtly incorporate technological improvements without compromising a classical award winning design. In a class all by itself, where less is more.

    My experience with the full size Sog Trident was absolutely horrible. The pocket clip has to be the worst designed clip I’ve ever seen on a knife. The way it goes over the top of the handle and then goes back down into the center of the handle was so very bad for me. First off, my pocket would get bunched up in the top of the pocket clip and I would have to use two hands to get the knife out of my pocket ( not cool). Then when I would finally get it out of my pocket, the safety lock on the handle was locked (I didn’t lock it myself) and I couldn’t open the knife . That can be extremely dangerous if you are having to use it in a self defense situation. I have a very hard time believing that I am the only person this has ever happened to, but have never heard anyone else complain about it. I like Sog knives but will never own another with that clip design. I owned that knife over ten years ago but sold it very quickly.

Then in the original box and paperwork I got a Diefenthal and in very good condition I got a U. S. A. made Camillus Jim Catfish Hunter #4 and a great Sharp tm 900 also near mint, I always wanted a nice Barlow, so I got in the original box and paperwork a U. S. A. Schrade 2 blade Scrimshaw Barlow, really nice. I also got a in very good condition a Wenger Fisherman and a tiny 2 blade Case, I got it because it was cute and a Case Pawnee Fix Blade also in very good condition, I paid $220.00 out the door, What do you think ?

    Im looking for a larger (at least 3.5 closer to 4 inches) pocket knife to use outdoors over the summer, for no more that $50. What would you suggest?

    I thought for sure that a Rat 2 would be on the list. But for your philosophy I understand why not. With better steel, perhaps...

    • @Player_Review
      @Player_Review 8 років тому +2

      He had some AUS8 blades on the list, so it isn't the steel. RAT 2 is probably the best legitimate sub $50 EDC folding knife that doesn't infringe on intellectual property.

    • @warriorethic
      @warriorethic 8 років тому +1

      Splitting hairs...he mentioned that he preferred the heat treat on the AUS 8s he had on the list more than the Ontario RAT series. Just clarifying my comment, not flaming.

    • @Player_Review
      @Player_Review 8 років тому +1

      warriorethic Ah, good point. I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have. Who'd of thought that China would do a better heat treat than Taiwan? The RAT deserves to be right up there with the para 2 and the griptilian in the EDC hall of fame.

    • @warriorethic
      @warriorethic 8 років тому +1

      Well, Ontario is now offering the Rat 1 in D2 steel. If they do the Rat 2 in D2 it deserves a place on the list in my opinion. Rat 2 in D2 would price around $30. The Rat 1 D 2 is $35 at knifeworks.com.

    Gideon, what is your take on the Cold Steel Code 4? Have you tried it or done a video on it? I have an AUS-8 drop-point non-serrated version of it, and it works great for me. Not a fan of the spine lock; I personally prefer the one-handed ease of a liner-lock. But that TRI-AD lock is something else man. It locks the blade into place with the authority of a bank vault.
    EDIT: I found your video from 2 years ago about the Code 4. Any chance you'd be willing to update it with a new video using the CTS-XHP steel? AUS-8 is good enough for any chores I'll use it for, but that XHP steel is certainly appealing.

    The cold steel Finn wolf doesn't belong up there. It's only for the wilderness. I edc it for 6 months and I just couldn't after a wile it is really cool but not a daily driver unless you cut threw some wood everyday.

    Good call on the SOGs. I have owned all three. Miss my mini trident (one of the sharpest knives I have ever received out of the box). Have you had any experience with Real Steel knives? They are super quality for the price. What is your opinion on Ganzo knives? I don't think you have reviewed any. I like them but they are a bit heavy.

    I thought about getting the full size Aegis, but I saw a couple of vids where people are complaining about side to side play and the worst up-down play. Do you experience that with your Aegis? I really like the lighter weight folders like these SOG, but I am skeptical about them.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 років тому

      No way, Sog knives will always have some side to side play, but all are solid up and down. Try a cheaper model and see what you think. I love them!

      @shcmoly 8 років тому

      Had to send my Aegis back, way too much side to side, SOG improved it but it is still there. My Flash II has no play - maybe the only one out there. Just how SOG does it.

    Most of these Except the Cold Steel Finn and Skyline are not purchasable in Australia, Any knives u can recommend in this area which are Manual? flippers are legal.
    Very Likely to purchase the Skyline as an eBay seller is selling it for $55 AUD (40 USD!!) including shipping compared to the ridiculously high price from my Australian Supplier
    Which is $100 for this knife. The Cold Steel finn is not being sold by the eBay Seller and my supplier here is selling it for $80 which is not including shipping totalling around $100 aud...

    • @MahBones
      @MahBones 8 років тому

      Yeah it sucks living in Australia sometimes, I'm glad the import rules changed last year though and I'm sure the ebay seller you're referring to(ie: only one that sells into Aus for decent prices) is moving a lot of flippers atm. You can sneak through assisted knives though, I took delivery of a ZT about 2 weeks ago. Also have a look at some of the CRKT's, they have a few manual flippers, I've ordered a Ripple myself, still waiting though.

    • @KebabEater
      @KebabEater 8 років тому

      MahBones You can sneak assisted knives? I believe Customs have a List and apparently they don't actually perform manual checks on knives... Can u tell me which which models of ZT u imported? I am Looking at buying a Skyline for 55 aud shipped its a bargain... I wanted a Kershaw Knockout... However it is assisted opening don't know if i should risk it.

    • @MahBones
      @MahBones 8 років тому

      It's a ZT0770, I also have a Knockout on order along with the CRKT, who knows maybe that's what's holding the order up but Customs haven't sent me a seizure notice. You will enjoy the Skyline though, flippers are fun.

    • @KebabEater

      MahBones So from my Understanding and reading the amendments flippers are indeed Legal Correct?

    • @MahBones
      @MahBones 8 років тому +1

      Yep the import of flippers and other one handed non assisted openers is perfectly legal now, not subject to a bullshit discretionary test, carry laws are still up to shit though.
