  • "Threatening Crimea would be a very, very useful way to force Russia to rethink its strategy...if it thought it was going to lose Crimea, that would be a strategic failure "
    US aid has come at a crucial time for Ukraine while a smaller British aid package could be used for attacks on Crimea, retired Air Vice-Marshal Sean Bell tells Frontline on #timesradio.

Moral is another thing completely. China and Taiwan? No. Invading Taiwan isn't a trivial thing at all. All they would have to do is hold out a few weeks at most for the US to stage their forces and it would be over for the Chinese invasion. Literally the 3 most difficult types of combat are offensive landing operations, mountain and urban warfare. Taiwan is literally a monotonous island packed with huge cities. Also, unlike Ukraine the US has a defensive pact with Taiwan and has stated that it definitely would go to war with China if it attacked Taiwan.

    My understanding is that the US has been manufacturing 155mm artillery shells continuously. The recent funding includes increasing 155mm shell production capacity. I don't think there is much wait for deliveries to resume. There are other authorizations that have been available to move shells to Europe all this time.

    • @philiplbrown
      @philiplbrown 11 днів тому

      JP on Ukraine war Updates copied a post from some guy in US that said there was 4 million artillery shells just waiting to be decommissioned. If that was true, send the lot to Ukraine and let them sort the good ones from the duds. It saves the US a fortune in decommissioning, and potentially tips the balance in Ukraine's favour. Trouble is nobody can even confirm or deny if it's true. I last read that US is to upscale its 155mm shell production to 80,000 per month by end of year. With other NATO countries plus Ukraine's own shell production we should be at 2.5-3.0 million a year by mid-end 2025.

    I do not want to be negative but I do not understand why Sean Bell keeps appearing on news channels. He goes out of his swim lane (air warfare), and talks about the US aid package (inaccurately), overall war strategy as being about territory (very simplistic), economic warfare and the oil market (not his area), naval strategy and boat capabilities (not his area) and then declines to talk about a topic on which he might be expected to have special expertise i.e. UK missile system capabilities (to be fair, he might have been avoiding giving out useful info). I do not need someone to summarise the history of Western aid but his criticism of 'feast and famine' inconsistency and lack of sustainment is very valid. His comment on Second World War bombing is simplistic but was just trying to show how accuracy can beat quantity. If he focused on technology, industrial strategy and the air war, he'd be a much more relevant commentator. Others have noted that he did not mention drones, which are transforming warfare.

    I lived around Silicon Valley in northern California and I've traveled all over the West Coast from Seattle to San Diego. The Defense industry here has attracted smart, intelligent employees who definitely helped to raise the standard of living. That's why I think these same industries should be in Ukraine, maybe underground, to help Ukraine to prosper after the war with good, high-paying jobs.

    It was of coarse, very unfortunate, that the military aide from Europe, and more distinctly from the U.S., took so long to be allocated, but I think that it is possible, that from a certain perspective, the delay could have a positive aspect. The shortage of aide, has forced Ukraine to be innovative and more precise in their use of what they have available. This is a valuable battlefield lesson that I believe, will continue to benefit Ukraine, even after they have received additional aide.

    Both have major powers testing all their latest technologies against each other on the theatre of a seperate country.

      Maybe. Its more invasion of the Sudetenland & Anschluss in 1938 if you ask me, with the policy of Appeasement to boot & a lack of strategic thinking on the part of the West (both in our leaders & in our population). However, things are slowly changing, we're waking up. Of course, Spain didn't technically get involved in WWII but Russia, under Putin, may be less discerning with WWIII or some variation of it & Moldova, the Baltics invasions.

    Ukraine's strategy is obvious - hit the most valuable, strategic assets in enemy territory while doing best to minimize front line losses. Reducing Russian revenue & war-fighting resources is the most effective possible war of attrition that Ukraine can wage. Oil refineries fuel mobile military assets & produce export revenue with which to buy war-fighting materiel - that's a two-fur - always strive for that, but really any highly 'productive' depreciation of the Russian economy is strategic, so relatively low cost drones disabling very complex assets & systems is smart. Ukraine knows this, they need just need reliable breathing room to keep it up.

    Ukraine's summer counteroffensive was doomed from the start because Putin's troops were given too much time to prepare! The explanation is that simple!
    Now Ukraine has once again found itself in a very unfortunate situation because it was not (could not have been) given what it needed for its own defense. Thanks to the Trump connection. Putin played all of this into his hands, otherwise the front would still be further east.
    It's almost a wonder why the Ukrainians haven't been completely overrun! The Russians' gains in terrain are downright ridiculous in relation to their own losses in men and material! Although the Ukraine had hardly any military material left to better defend itself.
    It is proof of how superior the Ukrainians could fight if they were given the right weapon systems and the right amount of ammunition!
    History could repeat what happened before the outbreak of "WW II", when people initially looked the other way (hesitation) and therefore there was a long war with millions of victims!
    Putin must be stopped now and not just when he is at NATO's borders!
