In this video there aren't mentioned such vital points of Ukraine's history as the principality of Halych-Volyn, the emerge of Cossacks and their uprisings (which didn't have joining Russia as their main goal), the Cossack Hetmanate and Zaporozhian Sich. It wouldn't be so difficult to tell about that. However, a part of video is dedicated to the Crimean War, which relates to Russia's history, not that of Ukraine. Ukraine itself didn't fight the Crimean War, the Russian Empire did. I understand this is called 'brief history' but 'brief' doesn't mean 'inaccurate' or 'partial'.
There was no independent Ukraine back then, so how else can you relate. History of Ukraine is history of Russia, even if you don't like it. Even the name comes from the word "outskirts", which implies it was the border region.
@@causticvision So, I see you are claiming you can relate more than me? First of all, the history of Ukraine is the history of the free people of Ukraine, it belongs primarily to them. We inhabit this land for centuries, so we own it. Everything that has been done by our ancestors on their (and our) land is our history. It's quite simple. And we know our history. However, we don't arrogate neighboring countries' history. People must know what is theirs and what belongs to others. Ignorance causes historical delusions and wars. Concerning the word 'Ukraine'. The fact that it sounds similar to a Russian word 'outskirts' ('okraina') is not a linguistical or historiografical evidence of its meaning. The language was quite different in times when the word 'Ukraine' emerged. Initially, it was used to describe different lands of Rus bordering with other non-Rus territories. I haven't heard people using the word 'outskirts' to call any land that has an external border but I don't reject the fact that such border territories could have a specific term. Also, the word 'ukraina'/'ukrayna' was frequently synonymous to the word 'land' in different historical documents. In historical letters of the Cossack period, besides the word 'Ukraina' itself, the expression 'Ukraine of Little Rus' ('Ukrayna Malorossiyskaya') is used. Thus, it meant literally 'the land of Little Rus', not 'the outskirts of Little Rus'. The word 'Ukrayna' was used then as a name of the country and had nothing to do with 'outskirts'. If we even try to judge about the word 'Ukraine' through modern languages, I can mention some very similar words from Slavic languages. Here you go: UA: країна - country BY: краіна - country SK: krajina - country CZ: krajina - land PL: kraina - land SI: pokrajina - landscape ... and there is 'окраина', which corresponds to 'outskirts' in Russian. Only in Russian. I think it's clear now.
@@kostiamarich but no one takes your land, the problem is the government, you can still be proud of your history and ancestors even being included in other state. Real Ukraine (I mean historically) and the territories that belong to the state now are totally different territories. It's a complex thing, and the border between two countries shows nothing but the borders. Historically most people living in modern Ukraine are russian people, as were cossacks, I believe they called themselves russian.
@@causticvision Firstly. It's not true that no one takes our land. I can't get to many places in Ukraine where I was before because these places are now invaded by Russia. I can't see my acquaintances there due to the same reason. Don't pretend you have no clue what's going on. Russia is the biggest country in the world. So I genuinely cannot understand: why is Russia so obsessed with gaining new territories? Secondly. It is very ignorant to say people in Ukraine are actually Russians. Actually, it offends me but I see you believe in your words sincerely. Ukrainians in the past called themselves with different names, such as 'ukrainskiy narod', 'rus'kiy narod', 'ukrainskie malorossiyane', 'savromaty', 'kozakorussy', 'kozaki', 'rusyny' and many other. The Ukrainians are East Slavs, so they are heritors of Slavic tribes of Southern and Western Rus as well as of nomadic tribes of the steppe (but not so much). We have our own unique gene pool which differs from that of Russia (containing more Finnic and Central Asian elements) and Belarus (sharing more common with Baltic peoples). We have our own language, folklore, political traditions, national heroes and the most important - national self-consciousness that has been existing for centuries. It didn't emerged once independent Ukraine appeared on the map. Ukrainians have always known they are not the same as Russians, even if it's obvious we share some similarities and the common source - Kyivan Rus. You just have to accept that history is moving. We don't want to fight with anybody but we have to because someone always doesn't like our existence as a separate independent nation. But we are so. You don't speak Ukrainian, you don't know Ukrainian folk songs, you haven't read Ukrainian literature, you know not much about Ukrainian mentality, you probably haven't been to Ukraine. But this is ours, and it's not Russian. If we are East Slavs too and our ancestors had a similar ethnonym deriving from the word Rus, it doesn't mean we don't exist but only you do. Just accept that and stop looking for a trick.
@@kostiamarich Why, I accept your existence and respect your independence as a person. It's just that state is not the real face of the nation. Ukraine as a state has little to do with real ukrainian people, same as Russian Federation is not russian people. Politicians always use people. Same as inquisition was not the true face of christianity. Speaking of that you can't visit many regions (and there are much worse problems) - it's fucking sad, man, I feel for you. Still, it's not the territory expansion war, it's a result of an obvious american plot. No western country is saving Ukraine with those weapons and "help", they're choking the country and people in it's blood, feeding the war. RF won't stop even if they drawn own people in blood. I wish the government could just yield and let RF put it's own people in charge, so no blood would be shed, but the situation wouldn't appear in first place (I mean the war) if they were not american puppets already. The war is a desperate move, and it was provoked by the american (and british) deep state, same as other slavic conflicts. As if everyone forgot already. I'm aching for everyone who have to fight though they never wanted violence, regardless of their beliefs or nation and side in the conflict. Both sides are sending people to die for their interests, and the people is the lamb. This is mad.
Much is not said, some things are mixed up and changed. It seems that the author read a couple of short articles about different aspects of the Ukrainian history, then tried to combine them without delving into the topic and important details
I think one thing we can all agree on is that Ukraines history is incredibly complex and seemingly endlessly intractible. What is astonishing is that for all the centuries of being at the centre of so many vicious, tragic conflicts, pulling east/west/north/south and god knows what other directions, and with many actors in these events dearly wishing the place would just disappear, somehow, the entity of Ukraine still persists, suggesting to me that despite the efforts of corrupt states ( and yes, Ukraine is one of them), nuclear states playing proxy wargames, historical mis-information, and armchair geopoliticians, amongst many other external interferences, there is an undeniable national spirit and straightforward courage that binds Ukrainians. And proves that it truly is a "real" nation.
Well stated yet unfortunately the United States is to blame for it's current situation going back to 2014 with a CIA coup to overthrow a legal Democrat election,
I learned just this year that I have Ukrainian in my history and culture. I am 64 years old. my 87 y o dad emailed me a map of farmland showing 1 plat of farm land to have our last name. It had something to do with Czar Katerina offering farmland to German settlers. I was told since my earliest days that I and my 4 siblings were 100% German. Apparently when a folllowing czar kicked them off the land, they came to the United States. My fa, landed in S Dakota. Im trying to learn more about the post- Roman, pre-Christian Germanic/ medieval history of my German culture.
1. Catherine the Great invited Germans, German know-how to Russia. Not Ukraine. 2. If your ancestors were expelled by the Czar, they were expelled from Russia, not Ukraine. 3. I have never learned or heard that the Czar expelled Germans from Russia. They expelled Jews... But Germans? 4. Post-Roman Germanic areas became Christian very, very quickly. (became a part of Holly Roman Empire). And in the Middle Ages they were already Christian for about 900 years. So what post-Roman pre-Christian thing are you looking for?
Russia not only wants to control Ukraine, it controls already its new/old territories (Dotentsk, Luhansk, Herson, Zaporozhie). People oh those territories voted on Referendums for return back to Mother Russia. There is Russian rouble there in circulation which replaced Ukrainian Grivna. And children there are educated in Russian. Hi from USA 😁😁
My mom was born on a Sioux Indian reservation in Timberlake S.D. on land the US govt gave to my grandparents who were from Russia, near Odessa. My grandparents left Russia not from pressure from the Russian government but because the lands the Russian govt. (Catherine the Great) gave German immigrants like my grandparents' ancestors had become scarce through consolidation of ownership over the course of a century, so by 1900 there was no place left for my grandparents to settle for themselves. In addition, the Tsar at the time wanted to draft my grandfather and his brothers into the Russian army to fight a war against Japan; another reason to leave. My family originated in Strassburg, Alsace before emigrating to Russia, and they still spoke German at home even with my mother's generation.
well, Western Ukraine was annexed into USSR territory during WW2 after Soviet Invasion of Poland. Before that that western area was mainly a part of Austro-Hungarian Empire, so not Russia. That's quite important factor, as this part (around Lviv) is staunchly pro-Western.
@@jonathanr72 Poles did similar things as Stalin on those territories... polonization, destruction of Ukrainian language, heritage, culture, enslavement and denial of basic human rights... wild times
Your timeline is off. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved at the end of the First World War. There's twelve years between that dissolution and the Soviet invasion of Poland which you haven't accounted for.
Infact the nationalists and anti-russian come mainly from there, am I wrong? if they want a nazi Ukraine they can have it, but not with the borders of nowadays Ukraine because the people living in the east and in the south simply don't want them.

@@theobolt250 the most important moment from our history it is a The Ukrainian Revolution (1917-1921). The most important thing is that the Bolsheviks attacked our State and captured it and installed puppet governments of the so-called Soviet Ukraine.

Not even a word about Zaporozhian Sich and famous cossack hetmans. You could have mentioned Bohdan Khmelnitsky at least. Ukranian identity began to emerge more fully in 19th century, really? To me, it seems that Russia wants to claim the culture of Ukraine even as they are destroying it. Russian culture, today, seems like the culture of Stalin.. Putin's recent seizure of Ukrainian grain seems no less horrific than Stalin's Holodomor of 1932-1933. What Russia is doing is war crimes and genocide. Crimea was still massively ethnically Russian at the time, they lend their trust to keep their Russians safe, and well to Ukraine, and when the coup happened which put a Pro-Western, anti-Russian president in 2014, they obviously saw a great mistake there, and went to liberate their Russian lands, Donbass regions broke away for the same reason since they were ethnically Russian. Crimea is the historical homeland of the Crimean Tatars. Throughout history, the Russian Empire and the USSR implemented policies to settle Russians in various territories or assimilate local populations into Russian identity, later using these demographic changes to justify territorial claims. Such imperial strategies have historically placed countries like Ukraine at a disadvantage. The narrative that Russia seeks to defend Russian-speaking populations is misleading and propagandistic. The reality contradicts this claim, as the conflict has resulted in death, including 200k+ killed and more wounded of Russians and many Russian speaking people from Ukraine, e.g. siege of Mariupol, Kharkiv bombing. In 2008 Bucharest convention NATO declared that one of it's main goals in the future is having Ukraine in the alliance. Weeks before the war started Ukraine's president wanted to revoke the non-nuclear status of Ukraine, meaning accepting NATO nuclear weapons in his territory. Russia couldn't let her biggest enemy to have nukes so close to the border pointing at her and attacked. If you think it was overreaction just read about the Cuban crisis in 62, The only reason the US didn't start nuclear war then was their disadvantageous position at striking first.
@Guy DeGreg Ukrainians does not own those nuclear weapons, it was owned by Russia. No reason why not gave up since Ukraine does not have the launching codes. Research first for you to have better understanding.

Western Ukraine will return to Poland. Hi from USA 😁😁
Until 1939, the western border looked different than in the film. What is now called Western Ukraine was then part of Poland and there was no Holodomor there, but ironically the Ukrainians, after Germany and the USSR invaded Poland, killed their Polish neighbors there, which is now called the Volhynia genocide.
Polish people also killed in revenge a lot of civilians, which is not making it right as well even though it was revenge. Its Volhynian tragedy and there are two "players" in it
I am wondering, when polish people will understand how we are important to each other, without free Poland free Ukraine is impossible and without Ukraine was never free Poland for to long.
Hello. I as a Pole, Im sorry that my ancestors were surpressing Ukrainian will of independence and some were taking advantage ecocomically even to the point of having quasi slaves. It is shameful how prideful and cruel some of my fellow poles behaved when adressing the Ukrainian people. It led to many tragedies. Polish people were a minority there. A big minority but minority nonetheless. This minority was an opressor there for sure. Im sorry for all of that. Its just that we poles are waiting for a apology for the massacre of Wolyn from the Ukranian people. We also want to give a proper Christian burial to the victims of this massacre. We know we messed up that we opressed Ukranian people and their wish of independence but we still expect apology for the genocide of Wolyn. When we hear Ukrainian news that somewhere in Ukraine a statue of Bandera erected or similar news we are horrified. Its simple as that lets admit our wrongs and be friends let this wound close for good heal and wrongs be forgotten. God bless and Vivat Ukrainian language culture and independence ❤
I agree that it was intentional starvation that happened in Ukraine perpetrated by evil Russians. With many peoples all over the world praying for Ukraine and the USA and allies helping Ukraine from Feb. 24, 202 to present, Victory of Ukraine will happen and all territories occupied by Russians will be liberated. Slava Ukraine. From USA.
I could have missed it… but where is the root of the prominence of the Ukraine?? You just briefly mention the Cossacks and then from no where say the Ukrainian language was banned… but don’t shed any light on how Ukraine and its language came to be proliferated?? Feels like an important aspect of this history is missing.
About Ukraine: nation created in Lenin's time (not to be confused with the history of the city of Kiev and/or with Kievan Rus & its Rurik dynasty started by Prince Rurik of Novgorod; Novgorod is an ancient Russian city), but only theoretical/administrative terms, since it remained under Russian control in the Soviet era, the conformation of its territory today consists mainly of territories that have historically belonged to the Russians (from the center to the eastern and southern side) and the western side has historically belonged to Poland. Important issue about Poland: the h4tred of the Poles towards the Russians is immense and it is they who have partly influenced the western part of Ukraine, this h4tred is historical, since Poland and Russia have had multiple w4rs for several centuries, even the Poles invaded Moscow at some point and were driven out by the Russians (look for the monument to Minin and Pozharsky in Moscow's Red Square). Now if you add this historical h4tred towards Russia with Neo-Naz1 elements (in western Ukraine) that by default relate Russia to the greatest enemy of the Naz1s, that is, the Soviets, who ended up destroying their beloved H1tler, you will have a gigantic anti-Russian national1sm, which the United States has been able to use as a geopolit1cal tool against the Russ1ans. On the current crisis: The people of Donbass are ethnic Russians and they did not support the 2014 coup, as those who took control of Kiev (with US backing) are openly xenophob1c against the Russians, they even banned the Russian language in Ukraine, which is the native language of the people living in Donbass. Ethnic Russians have lived in Donbass for several centuries, so at the moment they are defending their families and the lands where they have lived for many generations. People living in Donbass voted in a referendum to gain more autonomy and stay inside Ukraine, the latter being important as it shows that the Western narrative that the Donbass conflict was started by "pro-Russian separat1sts" is not is so true and this was part of the typical western pr0paganda to confuse the world about reality and adapt everything to the western narrative of "it's Russia's fault", I repeat "the people of Donbass did not vote for independence from Ukraine and/or to join Russia, they voted to have more autonomy within Ukraine", in fact this is the basis of the famous Minsk agreements that Kiev and the West refuse to implement (accusing Russia of not complying with them, when Russia does not has obligations in the agreement), and it has to be repeated that the people of Donbass wanted this because they simply never accepted the 2014 coup, which brought to power people who h4te ethnic Russians. The Ukrainian army launched an 4ttack on these regions in 2014, moving its entire 4rsenal against the civilians of Donbass, this topic is important since the w4r takes place in the lands of Donbass, therefore civilian v1ctims are always the civilians who live in the Donbass (usually the Western media always interviews Ukrainian civilians living in regions that do not suff3r the real consequences of these w4rs), the people of Donbass won practically all the b4ttles, there were a lot of material on youtube about these b4ttles, where they showed civilians f1ghting aga1nst the Ukrainian army, but youtube has cens0red almost everything. These victories should not really surprise us too much, since the people of Donbass were defend1ng their homes against people who h4te Russians (their ethn1city), any of us would fight with full force if you see that your family is thre4tened by crazy rac1sts that h4te your friends and family, today after all the 4ttacks they have received by Kiev, if they hold a new referendum it is very sure that they will vote to join Russia, they have already seen the true face of the Westerners and of those they control Kiev today. It is true that Russ1a supports those Russ1ans who live in Donbass, in fact it has more right to do so than the illegal military presence of the Y4nkees in northern Syr1a ("support1ng" the K*rds and steal1ng Syrian oil along the way), the inhabitants from Donbass are ethn1c Russ1ans, they are in lands close to the Russ1an border (secur1ty issue), they have an obvious connection with Russ1an culture and above all they share many family members with Russ1ans, for this reason after 2014 many residents of Donbass have obtained a Russian p4ssport (Russian citizensh1p).
Everything that is said here cannot be denied (at least for a part or bigger part). But the Ukranian language is just the oldest form of Russian. Just as Belorus has also it's own variation thereof. The factors that do differentiate it from "regular" Russian are geographical, ethnical and maybe to some extend religious/political. Such a proces of differentiation is seen everywhere in the world. So, don't forget, Ukranian is OLDER than Russian!
And yes, you missed it! Like this video said it STARTED with the Duchy of Kyiv! They were dominant from the 10th up to the 13th century. In the beginning of the video. Can't miss it actually.

Ironically, if you want a popular culture analogy for the destruction of Chernobyl and how that destroyed the USSR as a state; forever ending Russian control over Ukraine: look to "Star Trek VI: the Undiscovered Country"- it is really something of a perfect analogy set in space: Gorbechev is Chancelor Gorkon, Praxis is Chernobyl; it fits to a T; and was filmed at the same time-period as those events, specifically the end of the Cold War in both cases.
As an American deprived of all European history, this video gave me more questions than answers. I need you to use accurate terms. Germany wasn’t Germany in WW1, I know that at least

Europe still knows very little about the history of Ukraine. During the 300 years of occupation, russia was able to impose its vision. In fact, Ukraine has constantly fought for its independence and has always had a separate culture, language and history.
That does not explain that they had separate culture. Look where the Rus came from already and most of the recent history of annexation but only 30 years independent in modern days.
@@dennythedavinchi3832 Terribly erroneous view, which I hope is explained by the lack of knowledge about the history of the region. Now is only the time to return to historical authenticity. But the global difference is even deeper - the Ukrainians are a Slavic tribe of settled farmers who have lived on their land for centuries. And the russians (this is the name of the Finno-Ugric tribes - Chudi, Vespa, Moksha, Merya, etc.) are nomads. Therefore, it is not surprising that their army eats dogs, rapes and steals everything they can see. @Harry-mp8vi Well, Ukrainian culture and language have had a rough time over the last 300 years as we were under the USSR and the Russian Empire. All major cities had to speak Russian, while the countryside was too scattered to be controlled in the same way. So, the world got the names of Ukrainian cities from the Russians. Now that we're finally independent, we are trying to change things so that other countries name our cities based on our language and not the language of the aggressor.
This brief history of Ukraine is very simplified and doesn’t reflect a lot of sides of country’s history. For instance, it fails to mention the Kingdom of Rus and The Cossack Hetmanate State. Moreover, the Cossack uprising did not aim to unite with Moscow. Instead, its goal was to guarantee for Cossacks' the same rights as for polish nobilities. Before reaching out to the Tsar of Moscow, the Cossacks proposed forming an economic and military alliance with the King of Sweden.

Wasn't there 2 main rivals in the modern Ukrainian/Belarusian/Russian territories during the Viking age period? The Duchy/kingdom of Novgorod (Modern St. Petersburg) and the Duchy/Kingdom of Kiev? Both were founded by Swedish vikings when some decided to settle in these Slavic lands. You had ofcourse other smaller duchies/kingdoms like Moscow and others, but they were insignificant compared to these other 2 duchies/kingdoms at that time? Why wasn't that mentioned in this video and covered? From what I learn and understood, the novgorod/kiev rivalty conflict could be compared with the northern Egyptian kingdom vs the southern Egyptian kingdom in ancient times. Sometimes the other were more powerful than the other, sometimes they were separated as 2 individual entities and sometimes unified as one grand duchy/kingdom. I might be wrong about this, if anybody has more deeper knowledge about this, then let me know!
Basically, no. The rivalry was there but it was rather soft. Novgorod was the first capital until Rurik (the first ruler of Rus) died, then the capital was moved to Kiev and that was it. After the fracturing of Rus into several duchies (100 years before the Mongol invasion) there of course was rivalry between all of them, including Kiev and Novgorod.
You forgot to mention the Ukrainian People's Republic of 1917 and its partition between Poles and communists in 1922, and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army that fought for Ukraine's independence from the nazis and communists from 1942 to 1949
You said bullshit. Your Ukranian insurgent army are responsible for the death of 100k poles also known as the wolyn massacre. The founder of the UIA was Stepan Bandera who worked with the nazis. Yes he was sent in a concentration camp but he lived in very good conditions and even survived it . You will find statues dedicated to him in western ukraine and 0 in eastern (Donbass),
As the video hints and the comments highlight, Ukraine has been subject to a lot of upheavals in its history, being as it is a geographic crossroads between East and West. I think as Ukraine became more important as a food exporter to the world, it really should have been a top-priority of the Ukrainian government to pump funds (35% of its GDP) into its military and defensive capabilities to protect its national treasure which is food production (and in so doing it protects its sovereign territory and national interests). It speaks volumes to the incredible ineptitude and stupefying blindness that the Ukrainian government didn't recognise national defence as a priority until it was invaded by Putin's forces. I hope now that with the influx of imported defensive weaponry, military training (combined with the people's indomitable fighting spirit) and how these have helped turn the tide against the Russian invaders, that every future Ukrainian will see that the funding of a large well-trained and well-equipped national defensive military force is more important than ever realised, and should be in future the top-priority of every elected Ukrainian government to guard its national interests, territory and food production. It's pure madness and idiocy not to recognise that Ukraine, by its history and location, has been and always will be the subject of dreadful upheavals, because it sits at a crossroads between powerful Eastern and Western forces. Only a massive professional defensive army can guarantee stability in such a crucial region as Ukraine, the success of such rests upon its leaders not being boastful, hostile, stupid or otherwise forgetful of its precarious position as a crossroads between two ginormous powers.

The inhabitants of Russia of the 10th century themselves never called Kievan Rus, in the annals and documents of that time the country was referred to as the "Rous land". 2. The role of Kyiv in the history of Russia ended already in the 12th century. 3. Hryvnia is the standard for the mass of silver that was paid. The ruble is already a minted coin. And where were the Ukrainians before the 19th century? The word "Ukrainian" is not found even in Shevchenko's work). 7. Yuri Dolgoruky was a Rostov-Suzdal prince.
You should base your studies much less on russian studies and understand that there is Ukranian point of view and russian history was rewrited dozens of time in a sake of propoganda such losing principle of historism. Kyivan Rus was fractured even before there was Mongol invasion and princes fought against each other. After destruction of Kyiv there didn`t just happen Lithuania, there was Volyn-Halichina principality or Kingdom of Rus (Danylo was crowned by Pope) which was tryin to fight againts mongols when there was Novgorod principality in the north of modern Russia, helping mongols. Cossack didn't rebell in favour of Russia, first of all there was no Russia( history of its name is quite long story, another one of lies and propoganda) cossacks fought for their religion, culture and rights . Bohdan Kmelnytskyi made an alliance(protectorate, it`s another complicated story how we should understand that treaty) with Muscovy in a fight against Commowealth wich Muscovy betrayed and made peace with Poland-Lithuania and cossacks continued their fight in alliance with Sweden . After death of Khmelnytskyi there was half of a century of permanent war in which different hetmans made different deals with different countries (Commonweath, Muscovy , Ottomans , Sweden) and its another propoganda cliche that with treaty signed by Khmelnytskyi it was the end of a story. So as i said in the begining u should leave begind old russian propoganda and try to really examine what happened . There is no Russian and Ukrainian version of history. Textbooks and encyclopedias are written by all scientists together - Russian, Ukrainian, European. It is impossible to study the history of a country in isolation from the whole world. This is a general historical principle. When many countries participate in this, it is possible to avoid subjectivity of the interpretation of events. All historians adhere to this policy. But, unfortunately, the Ukrainian authorities do not like it - they really like to draw in textbooks.
Some specific, pivotal points, details regarding the Rise of Ukraine. "Out of the chaos into which Russia fell after the Revolution of the February1917, a NEW NATION now emerges - the "Ukrainian People's Republic." "Dismembered Russia- Some of the Fragments" "The New York Times" February 1918 Canadian scholar Orest Subtelny about this newly emerged Nation - Ukraine: "In 1919 total chaos engulfed Ukraine. Indeed, in the modern history of Europe no country experienced such complete anarchy, bitter civil strife, and total collapse of authority as did Ukraine at this time. Six different armies..., operated on its territory. Kyiv changed hands five times in less than a year. Cities and regions were cut off from each other by the numerous fronts. Communications with the outside world broke down almost completely. The starving cities emptied as people moved into the countryside in their search for food." Newly emerged Ukraine struggled for survival till November 1921. This turmoil resulted in the division of Ukraine between the Bolshevik Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia. Fragments, absorbed by Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia didn't get any kind of autonomy ever. And only in the frame of the Soviet Union , newly emerged Nation - Ukraine was granted the Autonomy. The Ukrainian Soviet Republic was proclaimed as an integral part of the Soviet Union, created in 1922. And Attention! The same way newly emerged "Donetsk Krivorozsk Republic", with the capital in Kharkov, historically Russian industrial hub of Russian Empire - Donbass, proclaimed in 1917 originally as part of Russian Federation! on the Demand of Lenin, it was also included in the new artificial construct of the Soviet Ukraine. Such way Historically Russian Donbass became the part of the Soviet Ukraine Moreover, the Northern Coastal land of Black Sea, with all these strategically important, jarbor9 ports, beautiful cities - Odessa, Kherson, Ochakov, Mariupol to name a few, which were founded, developed, and flourishing in the time of Russian Empire when Ukraine didn't exist yet, this strategically important Northern Coastal land of the Black Sea was also included in the Soviet Ukraine on the demand of Lenin! In 1939 and 1945 Stalin included in the Soviet Ukraine the Western territories. Crimea was annexed by Russia 240 years ago, when Ukraine didn't exist yet "The Ottoman Empire was defeated by Catherine the Great, Russia. Crimea was traded to Russia as part of the treaty provisions and was annexed in 1783. After two centuries of conflicts, the Russian fleet had destroyed the Ottoman navy and the Russian army had inflicted heavy defeats on the Ottoman land forces". And there was NO Ukraine, it simply didn't exist. There were 12 wars between Russia and Ottoman Empire, and each time Crimea and Northern Coastal land of Black Sea, which as a whole was marked on the map of Russian Empire as Taurida Governorate - for centuries it was recognized as an integral part of Russia, demonstrated increased Russia's power in the Black Sea areas and the territories of the Northern Coastal land. Since 1783 Crimea was part of Russia, until Nikita Khrushchev, in 1954 decided to make a present of it to Ukrainian Soviet Republic - at time it was an internal transaction, could be seen as meaningless legally and politically, because Ukraine was an integral part of the Soviet Union".. and important! nobody ever cared about people of Crimea, nobody asked if they liked it if they wanted to become part of the Ukraine..
Ukraine has a deep war history, from being a battleground during World War II to its current fight for sovereignty. Its resilience and courage have shaped its identity and continue to inspire nations worldwide.
I believe Eastern Ukraine is more ethnically Russian than Western Ukraine, which is important context for the current war. Western news reports often referred to “Russian-backed separatists in the East.” In effect there was a civil war going on in Ukraine ever since the Euromaidan revolution overthrew Yanukovych in 2014. The government in Ukraine referred to the fighting as an anti-terrorism operation; a ceasefire of sorts was negotiated through the Minsk Accords, with the involvement of France and Germany. But those accords were never implemented, which is another root of the present conflict.
I think they murder people in Ukraine which are not followers of Stepan Bandera, just as they were murdering people who weren't Stepan Bandera followers 80 years ago. Volhynia R.I.P. Bieszczady R.I.P. Lubelskie R.I.P.
@@magdaty1815a friend of mine has made the point that rich people always think they're going to use fascists to achieve their goals, but wind up losing control of them. When the US-backed regime in Kyiv took power in 2014 they wanted to put down the separatists in the east but Ukraine didn't have a strong army. Angela Merkel has now said in interviews that Ukraine's goal was to build up its military ASAP, so it stands to reason they couldn't be picky about recruits. And there were these fascist groups like Azov Battalion and C14 and Right Sector already hankering to start fighting again. Sure they signed them up.
@@MrStevemur It's like saying the only doctor in the village is the one that murdered your mother so you take your sick daughter to him just because he's the only one. Took in and nurtured the nazi-movements in each country they possibly could. The truth about CIA is common knowledge I don't know why people like you or governments of countries in UE pretend otherwise. Nationalist extremists or religious ones doesn't matter so much to the US. It has blowback later on because those groups don't just conveniently disappear when the war is over. But by then the people responsible for the policy have retired anyway.
Russia still use Pejerasław treaty as a reason, but they forgot (as well as you "historians") about Hadziacz treaty of 1658 wich was ratified by polish parliament, and made Tree nations commonwealth, a year after that cossacks defeated muscovites at Konotop. Untill end of january uprising, cossacks were split between Russian and Polish influence. Untill end of I Polish Republic there were cossacks regiments in crown army. In both great polish uprisings in XIX there ere whole cossacks regiments in polish arms. Of course there were also on russian side, but you cannot say simply that cossacks in 1654 turned and offer themselves to russian tzar. Biggest cossacks uprising in history weren't Chmielnicki's (those of course most succesfull), it was Pugachew rebellion. Since 1919 cossacks and Ukrianians itself defended themselves against bolscheviks officialy as polish allies to death, for that, and for being a part of White's army, Stalin punished them with great starvation. Because of starvation, Ukrainians held Germans as their saviors... for that rest of survivng true cossack's were anihilated by the Russians in 50's. The same way met the Volga Germans, Tatars, eastern Poles (not only nobles), or Latvians, Estonians as "Germans". Of course Polish-cossack relationship in XVI/XVII was much more complicated structure... Poles promised somthing, didn't held promise. Cossacks brake their promises too, then were bloody rebelions, filled in cossacks blood by the Poles, then came revenge when Chmielnicki allied with Tatars. Then came tzar... agains wich cossacks fought so many times under polish banners, and quickly turned also against tzar in favor of independent state. Especially in 1670's there were two hosts rebelling against their "masters". Zaporohian host with Tatar support rebelled again, wich brought finally Turks over them and over part of Poland. And in same time Stiepan Razin with Don cossack host rebelled against tzarist government. Russians as Poles defeated rebels. So cossacks turned into first Turkey, then after it's defeat into Sweden. In 1768 cossacks rebelled again against Poles, again from Russian inspiration, again where defeated, by joined polish-russian forces. But later rebelled against Catherine... wich terified her so much that she finally break up with her young ideals. Etc. Etc... Regognition of Belarusians and Ukraninian identity is other topic... I only want to say, that both made their renessaince in XIX century in favor to mention Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Cossacks autonomy from XVI/XVII century inside Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It's say quite lot...
Your comment almost makes me thinking that the Ukrainian identify was actually from the Cossacks. Were Cossacks the forebears of Ukrainians? Cus the word Ukraine did not appear untill the 19th century.
@@userwsyz You have maps showing actual country under the name "Ukraina" made by Wilhelm Hondius in 1648 or Johann Baptiste Homan from 1720 with title "Ukrania". And cossacks were elite of the Ukrainians but yes, today's Ukrainians are descents of XVII cossacks. At the same way you could denied existance of great plain Soux nation, or other indian nations wich had their special culture, and languages whatever they raised in very short time period. So cossacks form Ukraine (mainly Zaporohians) had their own culture, spirit and even in some cases architecture. @@krzysztofmichniewicz6247 thank you for your reply. That would make some sense that Ukrainians are a different people. I have tried to learn about the history of Ukraine and Russia since the war started but had not found out the difference between Ukrainian and Russian. Ukrainian should embrace the heritage.
Cossaks did not want to join russia, they rebelled to get independance and to get rid off srtfdom. And Ukraine was an independant country. In 1649 Zborivsky treaty was signed between Poland and Hetmanate. Ukraine was established in 3 regoins then
@Harry-mp8vi but the Cosaks did not just "want" to be with russia, they needed military help, it was not an agreement of unity with them into one country
@Harry-mp8vi there was Ukraine - the Hetmanate. It made relations with different countries. At least with Moldova,Valachia, Sweden. There was a reason for cossacks to appeal for the help of the tsar - the war with Poland was too tough. They did not want to become a part of Russia. They needed military help, but instead were annexed
@Harry-mp8vi it was Ukraine, people called themselves Ruthenians, yes, the help was not for nothing, but it was not a free joining to the state of Moscuwy. Ukraine became a sovereign state in 1918, but was occupied by Soviet Russia soon later. Those counties Hetmanate made connections with were allies of Ukraine. Anyway the land was named Ukraine. Pomade was not Poland it was the Commonwealth, Russia was not even Russia, it was the Tsardom of Moscow
@Harry-mp8vi Yes it was so, but the land was named so anyway and Ukraine did proclaim independence and after that it was able to let German Imperial troops enter the country. If it hadn't proclaimed independence from Soviet Russia it would not have been able to sign the Brests'kyy treaty
Moral of the story: when your country is half west half east, territories were presented to you by "bloody Russians" and you happily accepted them, do not start the argument with Russia or behave like clowns. You risk to lose the entire country completely and return to your historical borders: Kiev and couple of regions around it. Romania, Poland would not mind to restore status quo either. They also would not be happy with Stefan Bandera and Schukhevitch who are responsible for Volhynia and East Galizia massacre and are national heroes in neo-Nazi Ukraine.
This is an incomplete and thus inaccurate representation of history because it leaves out the Zaporozhian Sich, which was an autonomous polity and proto-state of Cossacks that existed between the 16th to 18th centuries, and the fully independent Cossack Hetmanate state founded by Khmelnytsky and that existed between 1648 and 1764 until the Russian tsar Catherine the Great destroyed it. By omitting this historically significant period of Ukraine's history, this video is a disservice to anyone seeking a full understanding of Ukraine's political history.

They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'._ _In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership._ _“Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village._ _Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!_
This video is shockingly inaccurate and skips centuries of history relevant to todays Russian war on Ukraine. Starting with maps, through to false information about Cossack’s uprisings.. Those were never to join Muscovy (called here Russia) although the last uprising had - only partially - such result. Uprisings were to gain recognition of Kossack aristocracy - as equal to the one of Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth - and within it, and to stop Catholicism spreading and being privileged in their lands. After multiple uprisings - Chmielnicky (Kossack leader) asked Muscovites (Russians) for help - what ended with partition of Ukrainian lands between PL-LIT Commonwealth and Russia. That partition has consequences till this day - in what language people speak, and also up until recent Russian invasion - the level of self identity as Ukrainians - being strong where Commonwealth once stood, and not so in the east of the country. The previous division is still visible for example in nova days electoral results. The video instead talks a lot about Crimean war - which may be important to UK coz of its involvement but far less for understanding Ukraine..
You are wrong, the cossacks agreed to swear allegiance to the Tsar in the Pereislav agreement in 1654, they swore an oath of allegiance to the Tsar as their sovereign.
@@grimreaper492 but I wrote that.. Cossacks eventually asked Russia for help against Commonwealth.. (so they keep helping till this day)- this resulted in war with Russia and division of Ukraine. "Bread basket of USSR" term is very over exaggerated. According to widely available statistics, Ukraine's average wheat production per year was about 1/3 of the wheat production of RSFSR, the population of Ukraine was also around 1/3 of RSFSR, so Ukraine was self-sufficient but not the "Bread Basket". Some people mention that 50% of Ukrainian territory is covered with super fertile black soil, those guys should know that Russia has 5x times more black soil area than Ukraine
Except Russia doesn't farm it. It's basically a gas station with nukes and the army that is most skilled at killing and raping civilians. At least the whole world sees it now.
The history of Ukraine and Russia is convoluted like most countries history . Nothing is static. The country of Ukraine is undergoing another stage in its history, the people of Ukraine are determined to have their own Country, and are paying with the blood of their people. From the very beginning My sympathy was with Ukraine, and I feel even stronger now. Russia is a large Country, it doesn’t need the land, but it just wants it, because it thinks it can. Slava Ukraini . I learned some more about Ukraine history today, I don’t know if it was completely accurate. It doesn’t matter. Ukraine has the right to decide for itself.
An excellent documentary that gives a clear understanding of key events in Ukraines history. The people of central Europe have had a raw deal over the past 1000 years when it comes to unrest war, famine and genocide. It is particularly sad that in 2023 we have yet another mad dictator in Europe who is making territorial demands on neighbouring countries. I hope that somehow a resolution can be found in 2023 although I suspect not.
This is incomplete. The author didn't mention the territories stolen by USSR from Poland, Romania, Hungary and Cehoslovakia. Territories that later were gifted to the Ukrainian Soviet Republic, alongside Crimea and Dombas. That's the today's problem ok Ukraine. More than half of his population are of different ethnicity like romanians, polish, hungarians, slovaks, russians, tatar (in Crimea). The new law of education do not let the students of different ethnicity to study in their mother language and was the argument invoked by Russia to start the war. It's a shame that Romania and Poland helps in great ways Ukraine in the war efforts and as a thank you the Ukrainian government gives a law that don't let the polish and romanian ethnic's to study in their own language. Make's you wonder?!
@@Abulb99, it's history. Cernăuți, Ismail, Cetatea Albă (Maurocastro) was never Ukrainian. Crimeea was part of the Ottoman Empire until Ekaterina the great annexed it. I'm sorry if you feel offended but it's the truth. The same with L'vov which was of Poland.
the words that people in these territories do not identify themselves as Ukrainians is a lie, in percentage terms there are fewer Hungarians in Ukraine than Romanians in Hungary, if we want Ukraine to introduce additional state languages on the entire territory or on certain lands, then we have implement a similar policy on the territory of absolutely all states, and considering that there is now a war in Ukraine and there is no time for that, we will do it for the time being on the territory of other countries, and primarily multinational ones, I suggest starting with Russia, continuing with the same Hungary, in In Russia, all 193 nationalities should have their own state languages and schools, in Hungary, for example (according to the logic of the author of this message), Romanian should also be the second state language
@@mihaidobrin85 You have rightfully used the words “invaded”, “annexed”. All lands in the world at some point have been invaded by the aggressors and the annexed. The southern Ukraine was populated once by Greeks, Bulgars, then Slavic tribes, Cossacks, after which they’ve been taken by aggressors. The city of Lviv was founded by the Slavic prince Danilo Galitski in 13 century and then was taken by the VKL (Great Kingdom of Lithuanian and Poland), so - did it make it Polish?
@@victorv4899, my issue is with Cernăuți and the southern part of the Odessa region. Those lands, in most of the time, were under the romanian rule (Dacia, Moldova, Basarabia, Bucovina, România Mare). In the 19th century and again after the second world war, the russians / soviets stole that land from it's motherland and afterwards gave it to the RSS Ucraina. Even today the majority of the people living there are Romanians that speak romanian and study in romanian. There is also an romanian university in Cernăuți. So you tell me, goes Ucraina has the moral right to own those lands? And the same thing with other lands in the country that never were part of Ukraine, with the majority of the people being of other ethnicity, not speaking the ukrainian language and overall not feeling ukrainians. I am against the war (because of the human loss and because part of it it's sustained with public money, my and other EU citizens taxes) and I don't like what Russia / USSR have done in eastern Europe throughout the history but I can't close my eyes at the historical injustice that lead to today's geopolitical problems. The solution for me is to Ukraine to return the lands thar never were part of Ukraine, were the majority of the people are not ukrainians but other ethnicity and the ramaining territory will be the true Ukrainian state, lived by ukrainians, member of the EU and Nato.
Ukraine was not part of Soviet Russia, it was Soviet Ukraine, a full fledged republic within USSR, just like Russia was. Ukraine has been a member of the UN since 1945!
Yeah, this is a reupload, but i don’t know why. Maybe they changed some info or the comments got too testy last time? But this definitely the second time they’ve uploaded it.
It's appropriate that Cuba was raised as an example of US hegemony, since it was US insistence that resulted in Ukraine being 'invited' to join both the EU and NATO. It was the US that previously insisted that Turkey be 'invited' to Join NATO. This enabled the US to install Pershing missiles along the then southern border of the USSR that caused Khrushchev to agree to install SS20 missiles in Cuba after refusing Castro's requests for years. The USA has a penchant from its paranoia about world losing power to instigate foreign wars, regardless of the consequences for nations other than the USA. After poking a stick in the Russian eye with Ukraine it's now stirring the pot with China over, nominally the export of EVs and cheap goods, but more because China is becoming an economic powerhouse that is erasing US influence around the world. Ukraine is the least of the US worries. They seem determined to start WWIII and destroy humanity before climate change can finish off the job.
Here you go:
UA: країна - country
BY: краіна - country
SK: krajina - country
CZ: krajina - land
PL: kraina - land
SI: pokrajina - landscape
... and there is 'окраина', which corresponds to 'outskirts' in Russian.

*Empress Catherine the Great (Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg)

I listened to an interview with Kryuschev’s son where he clearly stated that control over crimea was given over to Ukraine because it was one of the most impoverished regions at that time and needed a local government to start managing it.
17:16 Most of the historical connections that russia imagine are fictional. Most russians are descendants not of Slavs (like Ukrainians) but of Finno-Ugric groups. PS: It is not very correct to mark Kyiv with three tents, a thousand years ago it was one of the 5 largest cities in Europe with stone churches. For example Sophia of Kyiv, which has survived to this day.
So, you are saying that Crimeans who are predominantly Russians by ethnicity and totally russian-speakers have had closer ties with Ukraine than with Russia? That's a funny statement:)
And your statement about the origin of Russians and Ukraineans absolutely contradicts with science. As for the origin of the nationalities, according to Y-chromosome researches the are two local maximums of ancient Slavic haplogroups located in Southern Poland and Central/Southern-West Russia. Yes, there was an intermixion with "Finnish"- Uralic but mostly Baltic peoples in Russia, just like with Dinarics-Balkanians in Ukraine, but it was a two-way road, for example Erzya (Mordva) people are probably no less Slavic by origin then Ukrainians.

@@dennythedavinchi3832
Terribly erroneous view, which I hope is explained by the lack of knowledge about the history of the region.
History of Ukraine:
-Trypillia culture
-Scythia
-Sarmatia
-Slavs (russia is mainly Finno-Ugric tribes)
-Kievan Rus (Moscow is a very distant abandoned suburb)
-The Rus' principality is a part of the Commonwealth
-Hetmanate - an independent state of the Cossacks
-(Occupation by the Russian Empire)
-Ukrainian People's Republic and Western Ukrainian People's Republic
-(Occupation by the Russian Empire)
-Independent Ukraine
More than 1,000 years of state formation is quite different from the history of Moskovian State (russia).
Europe has long been deceived by the mysterious "russian spirit", but in reality it is nothing more than a musty smell from the savagery of cavemen. I understand how categorical it sounds, but this opinion is shared by all who at least once had a common border with the so-called russia.
What were your achievements during "the 300 years of occupation"? While a part of the Russian Empire, Poland produced world-renowned Marie Curie and Frederick Chopin, among others.

And 70 years of communism sure helped to keep them poor.

This guy had one day to write a transcript about Ukraine and Russia for this amateur UA-cam channel - do you think they would bother with cross-referencing histories? Absolutely not! This video is a disgrace!
Bogdan Khmelnitsky in 1654, sending March articles to the tsar, he writes: "to the great tsar and the Great Prince Alexei Mikhailovich of all Great and Small Russia ...". Learn history before listening to Ukrainian propaganda
"Out of the chaos into which Russia fell after the Revolution of the February1917, a NEW NATION now emerges - the "Ukrainian People's Republic."
"Dismembered Russia- Some of the Fragments"
"The New York Times" February 1918
Canadian scholar Orest Subtelny about this newly emerged Nation - Ukraine:
"In 1919 total chaos engulfed Ukraine. The starving cities emptied as people moved into the countryside in their search for food."
Newly emerged Ukraine struggled for survival till November 1921.
The same way newly emerged "Donetsk Krivorozsk Republic", with
the capital in Kharkov, historically Russian industrial hub of Russian Empire - Donbass, proclaimed in 1917 originally as part of Russian Federation! on the Demand of Lenin, it was also included in the new artificial construct of the Soviet Ukraine.
Such way Historically Russian Donbass became the part of the Soviet Ukraine
Moreover, the Northern Coastal land of Black Sea, with all these strategically important, jarbor9 ports, beautiful cities - Odessa, Kherson, Ochakov, Mariupol to name a few, which were founded, developed, and flourishing in the time of Russian Empire when Ukraine didn't exist yet, this strategically important Northern Coastal land of the Black Sea was also included in the Soviet Ukraine on the demand of Lenin!
They did and held a vote such a majority said yes
Ukraine has a deep war history, from being a battleground during World War II to its current fight for sovereignty. Its resilience and courage have shaped its identity and continue to inspire nations worldwide.
Судьбу Украины решили выборы в США. Вот это суверенитет, мое почтение.

So this name isn't exist or be used since XIX th century.
And yes, i know the cossacks were simply an outlaws from Poland, Lithuania, Ruthenia, Muscovy and Crimea but they made culture and a true nation during about 150-200 years. And there were (little but still) times when they were regarded like that by I st Polish republic. We cannot say that about Russians wich were and still regarded them only as their subjects.
@@userwsyz You're welcome, and if you had more questions I serve with all my knowlege hoping explain any of them.
@Harry-mp8vi Руський язик, руська мова, русини,but not russkie. Russkie is how Russians call themselves
You completely 'forgot' about resistance 1918-20 and 1942-52. Very pro-russian position to avoid the 'sharp corners'
He also didn't cover what the Ukrainians did to Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia
THE MODERN SO CALLED “RUSSIA” HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RUS', THE MEDIEVAL UKRAINIAN STATE.
_Something important to know, for all who are interested in history and/or support Ukraine:_
_Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus'._
_Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise._
_Its name “Russia" received only in the 18th century, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name into the “All Russian Empire” (Russia originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Rus')_
_Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even punished for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and were forced to call themselves Russian._
_Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'._
_In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership._
_“Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village._
_Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!_
It's all about Crimea, Svastopol and Russia's warm water ports, and a buffer state between Russia and Western Europe.
And the tsar never sworn the Pereiaslav agreement ‘coz he was above the people - so he wouldn’t swear anything to anyone’
@@tomnab I didn't say the tsar swore anything, I said the cossacks swore an oath of allegiance to the tsar.

Galicia wasn't stolen. It is Ukrainian ethnic land.
