This song came out and was on the radio constantly when our son was stillborn. While recovering from the surgery I needed I cried so many tears to this song. Now my husband is with our baby boy in heaven.
The video is scenes from the movie Rush which this song was part of the soundtrack. It's one time that I think the video distracts from song's meaning for those that don't understand it's origin. 😢 A great reaction. Ash you are a gem of a person. 😊
This song always got me in the heart but now so even more. I was helping to raise my grandson (my sons son) he died in January of this year at the age of 12. Ryan was his only child and the only grandchild. Grieving is a daily struggle. Even now 9 months later we still bounce from denial to bargaining to trade places with him. I'd give my life for his. No one should know the pain of losing a child. Parents aren't supposed to outlive their children. I don't know if there is anything more devastating then burying your child. Bless all parents who have gone through this and somehow manage to get up every day. 🙏
This was played at my 11 year old niece’s funeral. Still cry every time I hear it. It always make me think of her and my daughter who has gone on to join her.
Writing. On 20 March 1991, Clapton's 4-year-old son Conor, whom he had with Lory Del Santo, died after falling from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment belonging to a friend of Conor's mother. After isolating himself for a period, Clapton began working again, writing music for the film Rush (1991).
Mr Eric Clapton is the only person 8n the rock and roll hall of fame 3 separate times. One with the yardbirds one with cream and once by himself. How amazing is that.
He wrote this for his son who fell from the 53rd window of his apartment in New York. The video which is from a movie called 'Rush' distracts from this heartbreaking song.
The movie the video scenes are taken from is called "Rush". It's a tale of a seasoned police detective and a rookie cop who are paired up to go into deep undercover to infiltrate a heroin ring. They fall in love as they both become addicted to heroin. It's a movie as sad as the actual story behind the song.
The best version of this song is the track on his acoustic album. It was performed live in front of an audience. You could hear a pin drop amongst the crowd.
The movie is called Rush. It’s about under cover. Narcotics agents are that become dependent on drugs while undercover and each of them trying to support the other. It’s actually a really good movie.
I also asked my self what he means with “Cause i know I don’t belong here in heaven” until i lived similar experience, an all can say, it is the way to express guilty for what happened and not deserve being in heaven with his son. But God really loves to heal the heart broken people with wonderful special ways
I was actually listening to an Anthony Jeselnik bit about this song/tragedy on my way home from work today. Probably the most vicious Jeselnik bit of them all. So ruthless. I love Anthony, and I understand that you can joke about anything, but if this happened to me/my kid, and someone made fun of it…. Can’t say I wouldn’t wanna murder them.
I lost my father over a year ago. I recently listened to this song, and I finally had a proper cry for him for the first time. RIP Robert Gilligan (aka Dad).
This song was on the song track for the movie, "Rush" which is about drug addiction. I think that you can ascertain the end of the movie based on the song....
The movie is called Rush and you hit it bang on about addiction. This song brings tears because my first wife and I wanted children so bad. My wife got pregnant 3 times but every time the pregnancy failed. I do not have any children now but maybe one day I will find someone that already has children.
I dreaded this song coming on in public after my son died not long after his sister was born. I purposely had to listen to it every so often to soften the blow incase it came on in public.
When I first heard this, I had no idea what had happened. I just knew it was a really great slow, sad song. When I found out the reason for these lyrics later, obviously that changed the way I listened to it. I was not a parent when the song came out and I still was not a parent when I found out what it was about. I am one now and this song is SO different to me from the first few times I listened. What a game-changer some perspective can be! Nothing like parenthood to change the entire outlook of the world. I literally cannot imagine, and of course I don't want to be able to imagine, that kind of pain. How was this marketable? Whose idea was it to put this over the airwaves? Somebody had to be really hardcore soulless or cold-hearted in order to get him to record this, just so they could make money...
mike and the mechanics song "the living years" is another one like this that is real emotional. i have a hard time listening to that one without shedding a tear. great song tho. you would like it
Hello there the part as u mentioned when Eric said I Dont Belong Here In Heavon is the fathers guilt that he was not there for his son to protect him on what had happened and he showed up after the fact and the guilt of WHAT if I showed up an hour before moment So the guilt he felt for not being there drowned him out.
Some random trivia. This song was released when the movie "Rush" came out. I remember it well because II worked at a Blockbuster Video when the movie came out. The movie Rush doesn't have anything to do with the song, though. I used to listen to this song frequently, we actually played the Clapton concert video in the store a lot.
EC wrote another song about his son's death. Circus because the last time EC saw Connor he took him to the circus. I think it expresses his hurt even better. ua-cam.com/video/veGF9Vjo_IE/v-deo.html Little man with his eyes on fire and his smile so bright In his hands are the toys you gave to fill his heart with delight And in the ring stands a circus clown holding up a knife What you see and what you will hear Will last you for the rest of your life And it's sad, so sad, there ain't no easy way 'round And it's sad, so sad, all you friends gather 'round 'Cause the circus left town Little man with his heart so pure and his love so fine Stick with me and I'll ride with you till the end of the line Hold my hand and I'll walk with you through the darkest night When I smile I'll be thinkin' of you And every thing will be all right And it's sad, so sad, there ain't no easy way 'round And it's sad, so sad, all you friends gather 'round 'Cause the circus left town And it's sad, so sad, there ain't no easy way 'round And it's sad, so sad, all you friends gather 'round 'Cause the circus left town
the 'movie clips' are from a film titled "RUSH" (1991, not 2013)... about two undercover narcs trying to bust a big dealer (played by Gregg Allman), and what it takes to do so... becoming heroin addicts, falsifying evidence, etc... point being, the clips have nothing to do with the meaning of the song... they're just there because he did the musical score for the film, and the song, or, parts of it, appeared twice in the movie. VERY worth a watch.👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦
I know I can't stay here in heaven the video clip is from rush about two addicts Eric was an addict he was implying I'm not worthy of heaven. He stayed sober to honour Conner.
The video has scenes from the film Rush starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jason Patrick, Sam Elliot and Greg Allman, absolutely great film, you should watch it!!!!!!!
I have no idea how one survives that loss. Just the thought of it gives me so much emotional anxiety. People obviously have and do deal with that type of tragedy but it’s beyond my comprehension. I wonder if he really is a religious person who believes they’ll be reunited in some sort of afterlife? Sometimes I find myself wishing I had that crutch to fall back on and not have to be 100% certain it’s untrue.
Ty for sharing, it's quite sad and beautiful. But It should be heard without the movie clips as the movie Rush has absolutely nothing to do with the song. ❤
To really get the song and the emotion behind it you have to watch the MTV unplugged version. I hate when people react to this version first. It doesn't resonate because it's spliced with whatever movie.
You covered this brilliantly with comments/reactions, but you're some of the few who didn't begin to tear up during the playing of the song. I loved your own way of handling everything just the same.

I'm sorry to hear that. But it's good that a song can allow you to have a connection like you had.
The life is a shit...
No words, so sorry for you.
Hope you’re doing ok sweetheart x
I’m so sorry for your terrible losses, love from New Zealand ❤
The meaning behind this song, it makes it even more saddening.
Very hard to not get emotional from this song.
And what’s happened to Clayton’s brain is almost as sad
This song hit hard, I lost my 1st wife and unborn son when we were young starting our family.
The video is scenes from the movie Rush which this song was part of the soundtrack.
It's one time that I think the video distracts from song's meaning for those that don't understand it's origin. 😢
A great reaction.

Or perhaps he didn't feel he deserved to be in Heaven. Dave, love, enjoy and protect you kids. They are so vulnerable. Thanks guys.

There is a live performance of this song by Eric Clapton. I think it was on MTV Unplugged. I don't know how he made it through the performance.
Still brings a tear to my eyes 😢

Beautiful song and that story hit me, thanks for the reaction

You guys should listen to Craig Morgan “ The father, my son and the Holy Ghost”. He wrote it after his 19 year old son drowned.
love you guys. thanks for being true. i lost my big bro a few months before this hit the charts, and it hit me hard...
Bless Coner Clapton
We need more fun stuff. This one really pulls you down.
For my sake, hear the score of Jurrassic Park and Ash mimics the T-Rex. 😂
It would literally break me from inside, if something like this ever happened to me.

He doesn't believe he belongs in heaven which makes the song even sadder . He would see his on but not be able to stay .

This was about his son, falling out a hotel window and dying, very deep!
They said that
*apartment. Not hotel.

I’ve liked Eric Clapton since the mid-60’s when he was in the Yardbirds. His emotion has always been evident in music. ❤
I have no idea how one survives that loss.
Just the thought of it gives me so much emotional anxiety.
People obviously have and do deal with that type of tragedy but it’s beyond my comprehension.

now that you've suffered through this song, watch anthony jeselnik talk about it
He was saying he doesn't belong in heaven because he feels guilty about what happened.
This was after his son died in New York.
Uh they said that in the video
You should read the story of James Blunt and listen to the song Monsters.
This video is confusing, it's pulled from a movie called "Rush", It has nothing to do with the loss of his son.
Being a Dad, this just HURTS.
Ty for sharing, it's quite sad and beautiful. But It should be heard without the movie clips as the movie Rush has absolutely nothing to do with the song. ❤

Clapton is GOD.. ok, there someone had to say it..
T-Rex story? 👍🏽 😂❤🎉
Hey don't get too emotional there guys
I highly recommend believing.
Nice dad joke, even if Ash didn’t get it.
The vision in this clip is really inappropriate in light of where the song came from. Bizarre. It’s not a romantic ballad….
You covered this brilliantly with comments/reactions, but you're some of the few who didn't begin to tear up during the playing of the song. I loved your own way of handling everything just the same.
Dolor :(
