  • Here's how to correctly use your abs and intercostals to navigate the trumpet. Proper compression/focus from these muscles enables the player to keep the vibrating surface of the chops relaxed, so that same may always vibrate all the way across, no matter the range or volume.     I’ve been doing this for a while but then every now and again I’ve have issues with chops they stop buzzing. Currently I’m up there and I love all your vids your playing was ok as well at times (I’m joking!!!) love your uploads happy hooting cheers 🍻

      As Chase told me in 1973, when I was on his band, "Just take a breath." Good advice. It's the exhalation that counts.... :)

    Great demo. Any suggestions for creating the compression from the lower body (abs, intercostal). I believe I am one of those that creates compression from the chops and tongue as you mentioned. Thanks!!

      I wonder if squatting, which can help one develop and maintain flexibility of the chest and spine, would help? If one's chest is more flexible, one should be able to have a greater range of chest compression.

    When I was about 14 in a physics class at school our teacher set up a manometer (a plastic tube about 1” diameter and 8’ long set up vertically in a U) to teach us about atmospheric pressure. For some reason he got us to blow through one end. A couple of kids send water showering over the top. I was pathetic. Since then I have kept myself fit doing bike racing and quite a bit of gym work so have in the past had pretty strong abs. Nevertheless I still seem pretty useless blowing- I have one of those 3 ball contraptions and don’t do very well on that despite having a 6 litre lung capacity at one time. I wonder if it has anything to do with me being a rubbish sprinter but a marathon? seriously, what’s all the fuss about. Anyway I intend to persevere (I mean who would give up playing after nearly 60 years if they didn’t have to?) with renewed hope having seen your demonstration.

      Hmmm..... Not sure how lung capacity correlates to range. In general, too big a breath can be counter productive. My guess is your air is fine. You just need to figure out the correct application of same..... Try half a breath and see what happens..... ua-cam.com/video/OR8uKCNIMic/v-deo.html

    With great appreciation of your talent and your work I would humbly like to ask you something as fairly new trumpet player. Is there a way to understand what I do wrong when I don't reach high notes? How do I understand if I have to fix compression or chops etc? Or do I just try everything and see what works? Thank you so much for your videos.

    Hi Lynn. You did jazz/bigband. I am still working the way you teach. I do like my tone but in an another video you said that the protocol was noy approiate for low to midrange playing. I had serius trouble with pressure so the way you teech can be used in lower register too and if, would you mind giving a short demo in low to mid register? I guess firstline g til high d, Eb would be really nice.
    Take car and thank you for the advice due to mouthpiece lately!

      The MF Protocol is an adjunct to, not a replacement for your normal way of playing..... It is only used when chop tension starts to interfere with proper airflow.... For me, the Protocol begins engagement around high C-D. By the time I get to high G_A, it's mostly engaged, and by the time I get to double C, the Protocol is fully engaged. Using too much of the Protocol too low, will cause too big an aperture and loss of control

    Do you not use tongue at all to compress the air? How do you get those amazing trills?

      Yes, the tongue is used, but not as much as most players use same. The less you use the tongue for compression, the bigger will be your sound. The shakes are made simply by slurring between 2 notes. They are smooth because I completely over-power the hardware with extensive compression. I own the horn. It doesn't own me..... :)

      Yes.... In addition hearing protection prevents over blowing.....

    How do you create compression? If I squeeze the diaphragm I just get more air but not compressed. I have already rented the MF Protocol, but I can't change the pitch on the rim. if I try to play higher on the rim and squeeze my diaphragm in I just get more air and no pitch change. So how to create compression without overblowing.

      Sounds like you're confusing speed of air (more air) with compression. The muscles used are the same as for coughing..... As stated in the video, if compression of a middle C is 1, a high C should be 4-5 times the compression. By the time you reach high C, your abs/intercostals should be quite hard, soft or loud.... By the time you reach high G, you should be able to take quite a punch to the gut without any ill effects. Squeezing is not the same as tightening. If your air doesn't cause the pitch to rise, you're not using more compression of the air, but instead you are just using more air and getting louder..... :) buzzing on the rim makes this concept VERY apparent.     Dear Mr. Nicholson, could you PLEASE show a video measuring the air pressure in your oral cavity while playing these three octaves? Like in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Vl1YCSjNLaw/v-deo.html the reason is that at a same dynamic level, it takes a doubling in air pressure to play an octave higher. If you need around 100 mmHg or 2 P.S.I. for a loud high c, then exhaling with 200 mmHg for a double C would be insane.

    Sadly, I suspect that Maynard's obvious (relative, of course) struggles with range in his later years were due to his obesity issues. There's no way one can maintain command over the tension of the "engine room" (the thoracic cavity) with so much fat hanging off the front of it and exerting downward force on it.
