Hallo Gabster - thank yo so much for your great videos. I've already built a DAC similar to yours with OPA861 with this linear power supply and the UcConditioner Pro5V. It sounds really great. I've two times 9V DC for charging the linear power supplies for +/-5V. When the UcConditioner Pro5V is switched on again, it takes some time until all the flashing lights go out and the supply is constant. Perhaps it is better to leave the system switched on all the time. Thank you so much for your great work and inspiration, also with the song suggestions!
Thank you I turn mine off when away for safety but do power my system a few min prior to critical listening. I think it depends how long in between as it can eventually drain.
Hey Gabby, At 20:12 in this video you show some screens of a diagram showing the hammond 1182N6, I just downloaded Ians LinearPi MKII manual v 1.5 and its not there...any hint on where to find this ?
it is in the UcConditionar pro manual page 8 🙂 github.com/iancanada/DocumentDownload/blob/master/UltraCapacitorPowerSupply/UcConditioner/UcConditioner5VUsersManual.pdf
Hello Gabster, you should put a link to your tutorials on Ian's marketing thread because the number of people that do things in a way that is described as wrong in the manual is rising. Ian has not visited this site for more than a month now so it would be good if you would spread your knowledge a little further before someone has to call the fire brigade. Greetings,Eddy
Hello, Of course every product made available to consumers should have the right safety features so it wont burn down your house. A proper mounting in a chassis with the right properties should be mandatory. In a situation that could lead to a fire/explosion there should be something like a fuse that will protect your belongings. Inform yourself about which means to use when your gear starts burning. Greetings, Eddy
Hello, Please bare in mind that Ian has not been online on the famous Americain diy audio site for more than 5 weeks now so we should rely upon other users with more experience once we ran into trouble. If you are willing to take the risk go ahead. Of course if you just copy exactly the '' constructions '' shown here it will be okay unless you introduce some bad solder joints which seems to be the number one cause of mistake if all other instructions have been taken seriously. Greetings, Eddy
Hello Gaby, thanks for this great informative video ! Do you remember a special reason causing the showed 450F supercap to start swelling (over-voltage, over-temperature ...) ? I also use a 5V Uc Conditionner module in my setup but was assuming that the supercaps are reliable - as long as the normal use conditions are respected. Thanks !
No real reason I could see but there is an unofficial recall on those particular caps and they have been discontinued. It can also be the board or balancer that is why I prefer 3v for a bit more safety margin
@@stephanespohr886 Hello, Once there is a small difference between the voltage on the individual caps mounted in series will this stay the same during their lifetime? If there is something wrong in the board or balancer will it get bigger and eventually end with one of the caps exploding? We have read about caps not properly soldered. Of course if things are perfect during the first week after numeral recharging cycles things should remain like this forever because caps are sold having no problem with huge numbers of recharging cycles ( here they are not used until nearly empty so they have a very easy life). When caps will '' pop'' they will do it pretty soon. It would be weird to keep a schedule for checking the supercaps in your gear. After a year of weekly checking people would probably start skipping some checks and then suddenly coming home from work you will find your house burned down? Maybe add an additional safety circuit that can be switched while you are not listening? Greetings, eddy
also for longer lengths could i wire from the kelvin sense outputs and the 5v ones to the two wires of the usb c pigtail by soldering them? so 5v+ and s+ soldered to the v+ of the pigtail and the same with the V- side
Yes you can just watch the polarity and that it is indeed the USBC pigtail ideally the shorter and thicker the wire is better. I use long wires for testing as it is easier but once you settle on a system keep them as close and as short as possible also twist the wires for long runs.
If supplying 5V to something like a USB card or DDC via these supercaps, does it really make an audible sound quality difference whether you are charging the supercaps via something like iFi 5V DC wall wart or the LinearPi? I presume if you uplug the iFi or LinearPi, audio will continue for awhile and sound the same as with one or the other charger?
Really interesting components, and thanks for bringing them to our notice. Was a bit underwhelmed by the technical specs on the supplier's site: or their lack. No mention of their power rating or current rating (a key component for a POWER supply), nor the need to feed from a low-voltage AC supply. Download and read the User Manual to discover this.
How would you compare the LinearPi to using a PurePi w/ a Ifi PSU? I'm looking for a cost-effective solution with 3.3V and 5V outputs. I guess they're quite comparable in price. What are thre pros and cons? Which option would you recommend? E.g. the LinearPi can be upgraded with ultracapacitors at a later stage if wanted.
I would go with the pure Pi it is a great value also serves as a base for your system and has many features of all Ians products the PurePi as the best $ you will spend
very interesting, pitty there is no 12V ed, there is i didnt look properly. tad bit pricey for me as i just need my output to have like 5seconds as relays switch over
hi gab, this was a great video. But could you adjust your mic position in the next video? the mic being at your chest level makes it quite hard to decipher certain words. Thank you!
what is regulating element in LinearPi MkII? other words - what is under the heatsink? 0.8uV voltage noise is very impressive low value, I am curious what exactly makes it so good.... also, HOW IT SOUND???
I would ask Ian as he does not disclose any schematics and I understand why with the increasing copying. I plan a testing video sometimes soon. Sound varies some circuits are very sensitive and benefit a lot some do not for example dac clocks or a tda1541a chip are very critical vs a Protodac not as much.
The toroidal power supply can supply (2) of these boards, ($109) is between $60-$80. So for its about $200 for (2) complete power supplies + shipping/ taxes. Shipping isn't cheap, I think it was $30 to ship (2) boards to Wisconsin.
I wish I have the time if you have some diy knowledge start small the linear pi is a good safer option that you can add to later Or ask a friend or local technician 🧑🔧

Hi Gabster
Is that possible 5v UcConditioner work on 3.3 v ? I want to change the voltage if it is possible .
Thank you
Ian sell 2 versions a 5v and a 3.3 you can not change the 5v to 3.3 as far as I know at least without changing components

a minor difference yes.
Unplugging it shuts it down
You are talking about 6 + 6 V, in Your video but You are linking to an 12 V Power Transforer VPM24-2080 ?
6v input for 3.3v and 5v output. 12v AC input for 12v output see the Manal as it goes in detail what voltages to use and when.
