- Why Excadrill Is Thriving Better than Iron Treads Competitively
Competitive Pokemon
January is here and that means new tier changes for the OU Smogon meta gamne. Major Pokemon like Excadrill are found in the OU tier and sursingly despite it being worse in defensive capabiltiies, it is faring better than the paradox Pokemon of Iron Treads. Let me know in the comments what you guys think of Excadrill and Iron Treads in Gen 9!

Gen 9 OU
🙋♂️ (Frequent Questions)
Q: Where is the gameplay from?
A: Pokemon Showdown
Q: How are the sprites looking like generation 5?
A: Click the settings button and you can change the sprite display
Q: Why is the gameplay have the opponent being dumb?
A: Well surprise its me playing as the opponent as well and having Pokemon faint every 5 seconds isn't as fun as seeing the Pokemon do something in the battle for some time, which is why the gameplay seems like the opponent is braindead. Although I have taken some feedback and have tried to make it more interesting as possible without making the Pokemon faint every 5 seconds for hopefully better entertainment.

1:21 "Mold Rush and Sand Rush", did you mean "Mold Breaker and Sand Rush?"
Mold Rush is truly a crazy buff for Excadrill
Excadrill is rushing the mold, opponent has half the time to choose moves
LMAO I watched back and didn't even realize I said that
Mold breaker plus sand rush would just be unbelievably broken. Barely anything would be taking those +2 life orb earthquakes, rock slides, or iron heads. Add in the fact it would outspeed everything in sand, (even booster energy iron boulder). And add terra on top of that. An absolute monster.
I wasn't the only one who caught it, huh?
New ability just dropped
Because he’s the og goat
Terrakion: sure bud
@@kennobu8181 get the PU mon out of here, hasn’t been good sinde its own gen
That's why he's the goat, the goat
Being the og didn't help Lando though
Og mole*
1:21 "mold rush" 😂
My 3rd favorite ability
I really wished that tapu koko returned so that we can have a good electric terrain setter
cool shinies as well ; the tapus really would have been great additions for all types of players
@@turtle_7777I hope they return, if they do it through raids or something. We got Palkia and Dialga through raids, hopefully we get the gen 6 legendaries and the Tapus through it.
We got the Regis through home.
@@mandalorianhunter1 Isn't it a matter of not being in the code altogether? Dialga and Palkia were already in before the raids, as was Darkrai before the Mystery Gift, while the Tapus and gen 6 legends still aren't even after the second DLC.
@@bluekirby_64 the last DLC Is coming so we will see. I'm hoping they return
@@mandalorianhunter1 what last dlc?
Would be nice if Gamefreak gave more Pokemon electric surge… two Pokemon i can think of is Raichu and Ampharos. Just to increase their usage and popularity, they’re cool Pokes
Ampharos would love that, but I think it needs parabolic charge more.
@@BananaR777tailglow
@@lightofamphy6764They wouldn’t give Tail Glow to Ampharos because the move is called Firefly Glow in Japan (hence the bug typing and previous signature status to Volbeat)
@zememerr2329 And yet they gave it to Manaphy and Xurkitree (a literal walking Chrismas tree).
though he lost it in gen 8 if i remember correctly@@christiancinnabars1402
And people told me sand rush wasn't that good when I said emboar should have it for it's hidden ability.
Excadrill, a Pokemon who's Speed stat comes with an asterisk that might kill you. Enough coverage between it's move list and Tera. Top the good deal off with effective and versatile role compression and you have a mon who should be your best friend. He even brings his buddy Ttar and who doesn't love Ttar?
Understanding why excadrill is good made me a better player when I was a kid. You don’t have to be base 100+ speed or ridiculously bulky to be a massive threat
Similarly with Breloom
Turns out abilities are very important in Pokémon. Who'd have thought?
The only thing it lacks is ice spinner to revenge kill lando
Considering how last gen saw Excadrill drop off to UU, I'm glad its doing better here.
its been 1 month tbh
It's a classic, a fantastic user of sand, it outruns, and hits hard.
people might not know about this, but excadrill was actually uber in gen 5 because of sand rush under permanent sandstorm, until sand rush was banned from gen 5 OU (which i believe was only after gen 6 began)
Something that should be more empathized is how reliable extradrill is at getting rocks up and off. By passing magic bounce is really good considering Hatterene is the 7th most used mon and is a large part why rimbombee moved down to uu and can threaten it. Also non air ballon gholdengo really would not wanna switch into it if it tries to get rocks off(not to mention it is faster)
It's good to have a pokemon so good at getting his rocks off.
Excadrill also has the better design don't forget
fitting that in the dlc all about gen 5, we're back to gen 5 meta
Do you think it'll manage to stay OU despite of Kingambit revange killing it on every team?
Just use the secret tech of substitute excadrill
Ideally, Kingambit gets banned, but in the event that it doesn’t, it’s hard to say. Metas adapt and change, and we are still pretty early into DLC 2.
@giwrgospetrou1159 252+ Atk Black Glasses Supreme Overlord 5 allies fainted Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Excadrill: 351-414 (97.2 - 114.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
I love Excadrill my favorite ground type pokemon 😍
Mainly because it has a non useless abilitie and two that, while niche, are better than Quark Drive
Treads for speedy rapid spins and late game cleanup, Drill for attack/mold breaker sweeps
The Paradox Pokemon (and to a lesser extent the Ultra Beasts) need Hidden Abilities.
Beast Boost is a fantastic ability but with two or three, taking KOs is absolutely not what they're trying to d
I like the idea of giving paradox mons one of their inspiration’s abilities as a HA. Of course, this then poses issues like Intimidate Roaring Moon, Regenerator Brute Bonnet, Hustle Iron Bundle, or giving Iron Hands one of three incredible abilities (Thick Fat, Guts, or Sheer Force, any of which would make it even more terrifying in VGC)
No they don't my guy
Their stats/movesets are busted and they're doing perfectly fine as is.
Do you want Flutter Mane with an actually good ability running around? Something like Adaptability? Hmm? What about Iron Bundle? With Slush Rush or Swift Swim?
They're fine as is, I don't want any more pain.
@@junkarunkenflutter mane would more likely get levitate
@@junkarunken
Why on Earth would Flutter Mane get adaptability? If anything, it would get Levitate, seeing at that’s what Misdreavous has, or maybe cursed body. And second, Flutter Mane is one of the best protosynthesis users. Speed boosting Flutter is the second fastest paradox Pokémon in the game, tied with the legendaries.
As for Bundle, I would give them either Vital Spirit or Hustle as a reference to Delibird.
Ah yes my favorite ability "Mold Rush" truly the best ability
When in doubt, bring out the murder mole.
Glad my second favorite mon is still thriving 🔥
I predicted that it wouldn’t be able to keep up with power creep but I was wrong. Glad my gen 5 got stays strong
A big reason for Exca being better than Treads is the movepools. Though, Treads has a much more expansive movepool including Ice Spinner, Knock Off, Wild Charge etc., it lacks a good setup move to boost it's power.
I would wager if Treads just got SD instead of all these moves, Booster Energy sets would actually be incredible offensive threats.
Beautiful excadrill just amazing😊
Mold rush is my favorite ability
Ahh yes, the overpowered Mold Rush ability
Tyranitar to OU!!!!
At least he’ll have a niche 😌
my goat Is back and good again
EXCADRILL let's goooo
It's only thriving is because of it's abilities and it sand can set up better then electric terrain. You know that already.
I still think Treads is a good mon for pivoting, hazard control, coverage and more.
If Koko was here, Treads would truly be a threat.
Weather is more consistent than terrain. Also, its 3 abilities are honestly better than Quark Drive in general.
@@RFDN0 That's literally what I stated, you just reiterated it.

So then T-tar can be ou again?
ttar unfortunately gets struck at every angle in OU for now
yes, it's Ttar, but it's also gen 9
@@akarien1395we won’t be seeing him in RU anytime soon at least
I mean Mold breaker is always nice to have access to
Bro showdown still doesn't have the better models for the old gen 9 mons?
it’s been more than a year now ☠️
3:36 its crazy that this gen 5 ou team with pex has 3 uu mons 😢
OH SHIT HE'S BACK
“Elephant emoji”
Its in the top of UU, that's all I need.
The answer is simple, Excadrill has the drill that can pierce through the heavens. It can do the impossible, see the invisible, touch the untouchable, and break the unbreakable.
SD and Mold Breaker is an overlooked combo that can destroy even the bulkiest of Unaware mons. Dondozo cannot both have the bulk necessary to check Drill, while also one hitting it in return. So a Excadrill who has SD'd on a Dondozo as it switches in can safely 2 hit a Dondozo at 87% for jolly, and 95% with Adamant.
On paper, Defensive Dondozo almost always loses this if Drill is ahead and it doesn't rest automatically, and the favor is still in Drills favor if your opponent is aware they need to rest right away since a even if the Dondozo does hit you twice with a sleep talk liquidation you also hit them twice with EQ, leaving them at a critical enough health for it to be cleaned up by something else. If you are suboptimal with your Curse Dondozo set, and max Defense instead of spef, it fares off better than its Defensive role. Though obviously you want to get ahead with this Dondozo and already be at +1 before it has to try and tackle any physical attackers so that it's uninvested Defense can be compensated for. So ideally this Dondozo is far more likely to come out on top of the Drill 1v1.
This is all to say that Excadrills attack stat, paired with Mold Breaker really is only capable of being stopped by Mons that resist its offensive options or are so bulky that attacks from even a +2 drill bounce off of it well enough that it can threaten drill out, or kill before said Mon dies.
Also, I just noticed it is literally 1 point faster than Great Tusk, while also having a secondary stab that Gholdengo isn't immune to. So it not only can revenge kill its competition, it can also clear Balloon Gholdengo without having to change up its move set that much. I'd get into Tera options, but I mean I assume Steel Ground offensively doesn't overlap with much in terms of resistances, if anything at all. So I assume even without Tera, Drill still checks Balloon Gholdengo fairly well offensively.
@giwrgospetrou1159 Dondozo is the single most Bulky Physdef unaware Mon to exist rn, it was just an example to show how powerful Excadrill is as a wall breaker. Also, Dirge already doesn't want anything to do with Excadrill. The only way I see it checking Drill safely is if it has changed its most common Tera to something that resists ground, though I'd imagine it's still running Tera fairy.
Mold Breaker is currently a unique way to make progress against Fat teams that Great Tusk cannot make itself. This is why I think Drill does have a place in the meta as a rapid spin option, despite the fact GT does the job better against more offensive teams.
@giwrgospetrou1159 which sand setter are you using btw? Have you also considered a manual setter? Ttar is so bad that I almost would consider Hippo over it, though Hippo obviously has its own share of shortcomings in a meta with so much better ground type competition than itself.
@@WellToastedBagel Hippowdon is better as a pure sand setter than tyranitar. Physically defensive Hippowdon is a good switch in to tusk, and can wear it down to be in excadrill's EQ range.
The prob with Future Paradox is the absence of Koko. Meaning they literally have NO ABILITIES. Hence, most rely on Booster Energy.
Mold breaker and sand rush for escadrill
Future paradox mons got super shafted by the lack of electric terrain setters. If they return next gen and tapu koko is also there, we might get to see some truly fucked up shit.
That would be awesome tbh. They need the support more than the past versions for sure. I feel like they have awesome potential but more often than not can’t perform due to a dead ability 80% of the time.
@@EvraeFrelia Dead ability? Then why are booster speed valiant, boulder, and moth so popular
@@overlord3481 it’s “dead” in the sense of needing to be activated under very specific requirements and is temporary. Valiant, Boulder and Moth have a combination of natural power, speed and versatility to operate independently with or without their ability activating. However if you do want to trigger it w/o E.Terrain you need a Booster Energy which is a 1 and done item. Unlike Thick-Fat, Huge Power, Magic Bounce, etc… if you literally cannot trigger the ability due to lack of Booster Energy or Electric Terrain it is effectively a dead ability. Like Darkrai: if you do not run Dark Void (Hypnosis) you cannot get the benefit of the ability activating.
It’s a trigger-type ability which makes them situational and requires support to operate. The mons’ you mentioned are particularly strong with or without, but excel with it activated but don’t mandate it.
well this hasnt aged well has it

Hippowdon is a better teammate for excadrill anyway, so nah
You called it Mold Rush instead of Mols breaker lol
I wish we had a decent electric terrain mon. Punkurchin ain't it.
