Thank you. This is probably Robertson's best work which is saying something. I play it weekly and have since it was released..... It soothes. Today I post it in my blog in honour of Vittorio Arrigoni, murdered activist. It is the song of all peaceful civil disobedience.... it captures that spirit of belief and pride of place. These illustrations are magnificent.....
My uncle showed me this when I was young. And about a year later I had someone point a gun at me and ask my last words. I looked him dead in the eye ammd smiled and said "it's a good day to die." I think I scared him lol
My favourite of all Robbie's musical wonders. This is not a song of death yet a song of liberation, for hate does not exist in the bones or souls of native people.
Thank you for immortalizing these images overlaid on traditional, yet modern, music. Fascinating portraiture and scenes buried under profiteering industrial and personal greed or some perversion of spirituality. Beautiful music, beautiful humans. Peace.
Magnificent images. Why did I come across this today? Yesterday I was told a harsh thing by an old friend of my son. He used this phrase when he discussed my son's death( by homicide). I'd never met this man, and my son was killed almost 4 yrs ago, I felt some anger when the man said it might be that Roland had thought "It is a good day to die", he was saying my son would stand on principle, confront the possibility of anything that might result. Now, perhaps, this gives me perspective I hadn't accepted before. I knew he had faced a possible threat when he spoke a truth, a question of the person who shot him. The gun was in the hands of a fearful coward, this I knew already. It seems so strange to have come across this song by chance tonight.
My heart aches l, thinking and feeling what you e experienced. I'm grateful you came across this song, and that it brought perspective, perhaps even a bit of catharsis. This momma of an only son feels much love for you. Thank you for sharing.
condolences to your loss. I pray his spirit is in a place of peace. I'm sure in his own way, being " a good day to die", it was, in some sense honorable too. Praying.
"Today is a good day to die," that is the English bastardization of a common Sioux battle-cry of, "Nake nula wauŋ welo!" This phrase really means, "I am ready for whatever comes." It was meant to show the warriors were not afraid of the battle or dying in it. So... Crazy Horse probably shouted, "Hokahey! Nake nula wauŋ welo!"
close. in our language (lakota) there is no word that translates to "war" or "warrior". As well as all "Sioux Nation" or any north american indigenous tribe for that matter. That's an english battle term. Our brave ones, were just that.
The general rode for sixteen days The horses were thirsty and tired On the trail of a renegade chief One he'd come to admire The soldiers hid behind the hills That surrounded the village And he rode down to warn the chief They'd come to conquer and pillage Lay down your arms Lay down your spear The chief's eyes were sad But showed no sign of fear [Chorus:] It is a good day to die Oh my children dry your eyes It is a good day to die He spoke of the days before the white man came With his guns and whisky He told of a time a long time ago Before what you call history The general couldn't believe his words Nor the look on his face But he knew these people would rather die Then have to live in this disgrace What law have I broken What wrong have I done That makes you want to bury me Upon this trail of blood [Chorus:] We cared for the land and the land cared for us And that's the way it's always been Never asked for more never asked too much And now you tell me this is the end I laid down my weapon Laid down my bow Now you want to drive me out With no place left to go [Chorus:] And he turned to his people and said dry your eyes We've been blessed and we are thankful Raise your voices to the sky It is a good day to die
+Charlene Parker Hey you long time no talk. Isn't this an awesome video and song? I wish I knew more about the ways of the Native American, but Italians are not to crazy about the idea right now especially when it comes to this fucking conspiracy Keven Jay Kemnitz (Cherokee / Apache and German) satanic and racial
John Trudell. R.I.P.

Beautiful…a long-time favorite song of mine…

Rest in Power Robbie. You gave us so much.
I now understand the term "heartache" because my heart aches everytime I hear what my ancestors have gone through.
thSubliminalCriminal It was terrible, they were tough people. Probably worse times for them than 9/11.

These sentiments run deep. Thank you.
I listen to this song when I need it most.

I am glad you heard this and was wise enough to truly hear it's message....
Bless you and I hope you know peace within. Always

One must admire the spirit and honor of Native Americans.

I would grant the license being that Robbie Robertson is Mohawk.
I'm here to kill you people or chew buffalo testes......AND I AM ALL OUT OF BUFFALO TESTES
Robbie Robertson made a lot of good songs about the indian thanks for the post
My best song in my life. I listened to it since 2002 I had the CD
Long live the free, those who hold on to nothing.....
"Another word for freedom is: nothing left to lose."
A noble ambition, still not an easy thing to achieve. Or maybe it is.....
Gives me strength in my shaking knees
My people, have always been strong! LOVE!
This is a fantastic cd.
Amazing pictures
The general rode for sixteen days
The horses were thirsty and tired
On the trail of a renegade chief
One he'd come to admire
The soldiers hid behind the hills
That surrounded the village
And he rode down to warn the chief
They'd come to conquer and pillage
Lay down your arms
Lay down your spear
The chief's eyes were sad
But showed no sign of fear
[Chorus:]
It is a good day to die
Oh my children dry your eyes
It is a good day to die
He spoke of the days before the white man came
With his guns and whisky
He told of a time a long time ago
Before what you call history
The general couldn't believe his words
Nor the look on his face
But he knew these people would rather die
Then have to live in this disgrace
What law have I broken
What wrong have I done
That makes you want to bury me
Upon this trail of blood
[Chorus:]
We cared for the land and the land cared for us
And that's the way it's always been
Never asked for more never asked too much
And now you tell me this is the end
I laid down my weapon
Laid down my bow
Now you want to drive me out
With no place left to go
[Chorus:]
And he turned to his people and said dry your eyes
We've been blessed and we are thankful
Raise your voices to the sky
It is a good day to die
So awesome

I figured
It Is a Good Day to Die
Yeah, it is hypocrissy.
It is a good day to dye my hair.
Yeah won't except my subscription
That does not surprise me
A good day to die. For either side. Maybe for Yellow Hair.
Such a corny song. I hope my coworkers never find it.
I guess you are not Native. Racial maybe?
