  • I couldnt post this earlier because it was just above 100MB and UA-cam wouldnt allow it. But after my last video was linked from several awesome links including CartoonBrew, Seward Street and CookedArt, I realized this video might be well received as well. So I've squeezed the compression, hopefully it wont look too bad. I messed a little with the zoom on this one and the camera moved about a bit more so I hope it doesnt make anyone sick...!
    I've put up a few stills from this presentation on my blog including some notes from Paul Driessen's presentation at UCLA on my blog: www.numairabbas...

    Something I struggle with when sketching characters (my own or of sources like Disney movies) is keeping the proportions straight, like making sure the eyes aren't a hair too high or the nose look off.
    BUT HE FREAKING JUST DOES IT PERFECTLY FROM MEMORY.

    well i wont repeat whats already been said but.... I LOVE 2D because of the simple fact that sombody drew it
    the thing about 3D is ( as it is currently atleast)... the characters still look very phony, plastic-like and rubbery
    because of the textures, and shading applied. IT IS DISTRACTING! It really takes away so much from the action or expression thats going on.
    .....being sombody that draws, im always in awe of what can be accomplished by lines,.. its really an inspiration...

    That's pretty cool. I was given the same book by Burne Hogarth when I was a kid that Glen Keane was given as he mentioned at the beginning.

    This was at Cal Arts. I don't think we were really encouraged to film and take snaps but I couldn't resist!

    @oceanview1211 3D and 2D cost are almost identical, it's really an executive decision on which medium to use. For instance, Japanese choose the 2D medium,and the cartoons that come from there cost the same as the ones that USED to come from North America. With new Marvel toons coming out in 2D,I hope that sways other studios to do the same.

    It makes me laugh how people argue through posting comments, its like a playground. But anyway, i doubt very much Mr. Keane posted this. Whether he did or not, as far as drawing and animating is concerned the man is a genius and i'd very much like to meet him.

    I dont envy people who own millions of dollars, or those who are married to supermodels, or those who happen to own every beautiful car they want or a land house in the middle of the vine fields in south France or a beach house on the Polinesia. But I damn hell envy someone who can draw like that.

    this is what art and drawing should be. For the record- copying from photograph exactly as it appears on the photograph does not make you an artist.

    @kasrkinmullet I go to Sheridan College (and I know Cal Arts as well as Gobelins) still teach Traditional animation as their fundamental. We spend 4/4 years learning it (it's about 70% of our coarse load). From what we're told, it's because it's going to come back,and come back strong.
    Also, people are really getting sick of 3D.
    Long live 2D!

    It's funny. Sometimes the beauty of well-done 3D animation just can't be done by 2D means. But, at the same time, the movement and life in 2D characters is hard to get in 3D. Really, choosing which medium to use should be the director's choice, depending on what feel they're going for in the film. Just like an artist may chose to use watercolor for one painting, and digital for another.

    bergersenior is right by saying that 2d and 3d require extensive knowledge about animationand how things move and both follow the same principles.
    that's what he was saying
    in fact any 3d animator usually learns traditional animation first and only then goes into 3d

    @neonaction I agree it is more mechanical, but not mathematical. 3D animation can be done well, such was Tangled, which surprised the hell out of my entire program when we saw it. Pixar and Dreamworks also do 3D very well. It's the ladder that does not, and that's the unfortunate part. The ladder is 80% of everything else.
    I know from our lectures, that John Lassedar (I probably spelled that wrong) is fighting tooth and nail with the Disney execs to bring 2D back. Let's hope for the best.

    @RetroNoodles that's why anime is still largely done by 2d animation. I just think so much more creative stuff can be done with 2d animation. And aesthetically, 2d has great vitality and life. Besides the run of the mill anime, there are some really great anime out there if you just look for it. Great animation is great animation, no matter 2d or 3d.

  • @thomasthetans
    @thomasthetans 12 років тому

    its not phased out its been shifted to anther market such as youtube and other smaller places. But major 2D production in America is little to non cause of the unions made it harder for studios to pay for animators for 2D production and plus studios if they could produce a 2D series in keora or some where for cheaper thats where they'll go. But it still here

    thats not true, theres a whole lot of skill that 2D animation requires that 3D doesnt, just keeping the character solid and at the same size at the same time you are animating!

    @neonaction you caught me out there however only very few people would be able to draw the ocean and i mean people with an amazing talent and people do that today but i find taking a picture then drawing it is easier and you're not stealing anyone elses work it's your photo so you can do whatever you want but if you went on the internet and found someone elses painting then copied it then that would be cheating

    @MBGamingLegends Lol Painters who lived 400 years ago painted the ocean more beautifully than painters today who copied from photographs. They did not have cameras 400 years ago. lol. Dont tell me to shut up hahah.

    but you should have sped up the drawing during editing. plus theres no need for the audio.

    Okay first of all, that is so not true, and even if it were, there's no reason to insult someone just because they didn't see it a certain way. Nobody's prefect. Want proof? You misspelled "morons."

  • @FluffyTrainz
    @FluffyTrainz 17 років тому

    Maybe this is obvious only to me because I'm a genius and possess the intellect of 1000 nuclear physicists, but this is a bootleg i.e. the guy wasn't permitted to film or at least assumed that he wasn't permitted. Hence the shaking. Hence the crappy audio. He was probably repositioning himself from time to time in an effort to not get caught or get a better picture.
    Get a brain Morans.
