What he said at the end really shook me because I for one also draw out of my imagination and I always had that same feeling. You draw for hours just nothing, random face, people doing impossible things and then suddenly everything just clicks. Drawing is a wonderful skill and an amazing process, Glen really inspires me to keep going at animation.
Yeah playing music works that same way there are so many hours where I sit down for the bass guitar or piano and my fingers are stiff andI'm not playing on the beat, or behind or ahead of it like I want to, even...fingers slip, feel uninspired. Then sometimes you're going to get into a meditative state after doing it long enough usually, at one time. At least that is my own experience..and things just flow. The trying too hard to force something out really can ruin things but it does come together after you draw, play, whatever it is, long enough
I love how honest he is, especially when he mentioned how he just looks at non-white people while eating dinner in LA, and sees aspects of Pocahontas in them.
He uses so much paper, and he draws really fast and the lines look really flowy. Incredible. Almost the opposite of me (I shove a lot of drawings in one paper, and the lines look unnatural...)
***** drawing lines are a reflection of your confidence and your mouscle memory. These two things come with everyday drawing, pick a skecthbook, draw everyday, in a month it's going to be better and in a year it's going to be great. like i draw my profil pic last week, but one year ago I could barely draw. It works.
Lothian Alimantado For the last 2 sketchbooks, I have made the goal of drawing everyday, and it's true! My drawings ARE getting slightly better. :D Thanks for the advice. And, your profile pic looks AMAZING.
great! thanks c: getting good at art is only a question of stepping up regularely your working standards. I would draw a 100p sketchbook every 2 month, now because i'm having more fun drawing, I draw more, It takes less brain power, I have to think about less technical elements of the drawing and focus on design, pose dynamic, values...and now I draw 2 sketchbook worth of drawings every month. (you can cheak out my blog if you want and look at my progression month to month : lothianalimantado.tumblr.com/)
+XAVIERCUERVO, the magic for me for example with Beast is when people react with deep emotion to what is essentially just a series of drawings brought to life through animation and given soul and mixed with the voice and music. That to me is what is magic.
Just love how he believe in these characters its soo beautiful now i really want to live that feeling of making my characters come to life and i soo need a pen and paper because they anit gonna make themselves
I almost teared up when he spoke about the beast's eyes. Every SINGLE time I reminisce about Disney movies pre-Y2K, I get emotional because America doesn't create beauty like that in cartoons anymore. Everyone's out for the buck and not the emotion the old cartoons evoked.
@@5ilver42 very true. You cannot have standards because if you do you will be labeled as “mysoginist, sexist, fat shamer, racist” so on and so forth. And they keep changing classic characters to meet the “wokeness” of today’s society.
This guy is a freaking legend. I wanna meet him someday. I would be so honored to learn anything from him. I love his attitude, very honest and relatable person. He's not just an artist he's a storyteller. And he is awesome!
4 years later, yeah. I can tell you the same, but Beast in his first scenes, like when he met Belle the first time, I was kind of scared of him because of the shadows, and I also was surprised of his screams. But in any case, they did a good job on him. The character is amazing, and Glen made a good job 💚💕
take the beast. film was released in 1991. this video was filmed in 2012, so 21 years later he is able to recreate the masterpiece with no aids what so ever. that is talent.
No problem!! I wish I could've had recorded the whole thing, but I ran out of memory! I'm glad you guys are enjoying this. I'd love to see that making of you're talking about!! Greetings from Mexico city!
I remember hearing the stories of the old animators at Disney. We all love the voices, but more than that, I think we love the way they move even more. Those men were legends, they conveyed emotion with their hands better than a hollywood actor with good looks and suave elegance. He did the same thing. To me, he's every bit as great as the masters from when disney began.
Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this. Glen Keane one of the greatest animators of our time, and it is a privilege and a joy to hear him share his thoughts, experience and skill.
Brilliant! This is magic. And Pocahontas animation is my favourite, I guess. But I love them all. But why on earth Tangled was made a computer animation? Glen could just do it traditionally... It would be so beautiful. I know it's a lot more work and more money etc., but come on! I'd give 50$ to watch traditionally animated Tangled in cinemas.
watching this really made my day, it was amazing to watch the video of such a master. it must have been awesome to witness in real life. thanks so much for sharing! really thank you :)
It was amazing ...thank you so much for uploading and sharing among all over the world. My friend was there and when i asked him if he filmed it or not...he said, he tried but somehow it did not work. But, he also said that some person filmed it and hope it will be uploaed soon....may be you are that person..ahhaahha...greetings from Bangladesh.I have 30 minutes making of `La luna` from Stuttgart film fest this year. Thinking that i should uploaded it for all...:D
Another Renaissance is coming. '70's and '80's were also a dark time for Disney, and there will come a time where the current darkness will end, and the light shall once again be revealed...
Does anyone know if Glen Keane said "The most challenging part of drawing Pocahontas is going to be trying to capture who she really is" at a private interview about animating the character, or if he said that when he supervised the other animators in the studio?
Mostly a blackwing brand pencil. But like all artist and traditional animation, they just sharpen their pencils like a fencing (pointy sword) like edge.

+Bianca I. Negron Yeah I really love that idea.

Besides all his talent... He's so humble, so kind & gratefull, OMG!!! Could we have a better Disney role model? He's a Hero!!!
From Ariel to Rapunzel, he's great!!!
I love his theory about characters already existing and they come out as you do research and draw. I completely agree.
I love how honest he is, especially when he mentioned how he just looks at non-white people while eating dinner in LA, and sees aspects of Pocahontas in them.
without those eyes....that was just another mashup of animals....when he drew those "prince" eyes....Wow moment came! It was the Beast indeed!
The beast eyes really brought him to life. Glen is a true artist.
He uses so much paper, and he draws really fast and the lines look really flowy. Incredible. Almost the opposite of me (I shove a lot of drawings in one paper, and the lines look unnatural...)
practice makes perfect!

Lothian Alimantado AWESOME!
I'm following your tumblr. I am Arthappyneko/ihappyneko.
this masters are very unappreciated not by me or you , but everyone else I think what they do is magic ....real magic
+XAVIERCUERVO, the magic for me for example with Beast is when people react with deep emotion to what is essentially just a series of drawings brought to life through animation and given soul and mixed with the voice and music. That to me is what is magic.

So how did it go? Were you able to create any of them? I'm curious haha
my god. such built up experience, sketches practically in minutes. simply inspiring. beast though.. so fast
I almost teared up when he spoke about the beast's eyes. Every SINGLE time I reminisce about Disney movies pre-Y2K, I get emotional because America doesn't create beauty like that in cartoons anymore. Everyone's out for the buck and not the emotion the old cartoons evoked.
it's worse than that, American has waged a war upon beauty itself!

Jealousy... is burning my soul... MY SOUL!!!!!
He drew Beast so fast, omg. It was gorgeous 😍
This guy is a freaking legend. I wanna meet him someday. I would be so honored to learn anything from him. I love his attitude, very honest and relatable person. He's not just an artist he's a storyteller. And he is awesome!
Maybe it's because I grew up watching beauty and the beast, but the beast never looked ugly or scary to me.
4 years later, yeah. I love how he tries to talk and draw and then ends up losing himself in the picture. This man, who drew my childhood, is now my hero.
take the beast. film was released in 1991. this video was filmed in 2012, so 21 years later he is able to recreate the masterpiece with no aids what so ever. that is talent.
Glen keane's a beast!
And he's so right. The tiniest change in placement of a drawing makes an amazing difference.
This is freaking incredible. My goodness.
Wow he makes animating look so easy...he has so much talent, watching him just makes me want to pick up a pencil and start sketching.
This man is incredible and funny too.. :D
No problem!!
I wish I could've had recorded the whole thing, but I ran out of memory!
I'm glad you guys are enjoying this.
I'd love to see that making of you're talking about!!

There was a running joke amongst animators that the better you are, the more trees you'll save because you won't need as much paper :P
Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this. Glen Keane one of the greatest animators of our time, and it is a privilege and a joy to hear him share his thoughts, experience and skill.
I have so much respect for this man. I watch all these amazing animators and their processes and it's truly incredible the work they do.
Monster too scary? soften it up with cow ears!
I just wish I had that desk lol
This man is a god
Absolutely incredible to watch. I hope to one day achieve this level of artistic ability.

i just love it when he draws the eyes at 8:26 it actually makes beast feel human to me at the moment
Thank you for uploading this, it's really awesome to see this guy doing magic with those gesture lines!!!!
"That's an ugly pocahontas."

No problem! :) Glad you enjoyed it!
HE'S BACK!!
I love how he explains. It seems so easily ^^

Another Renaissance is coming. '70's and '80's were also a dark time for Disney, and there will come a time where the current darkness will end, and the light shall once again be revealed...
Amé su dibujo de la bestia
I'm gonna go watch Pocahontas now
No problem! :D
He rocked Disney! Now whoever becomes his best replacement, it should start talking about making a ballerina princess!
goddamn thats impressive
I.. love him. XD
Huh, so THAT's why I like Pocahontas's face so much more than the other disney characters.
Could you please upload that La Luna video?
Does anyone know if Glen Keane said "The most challenging part of drawing Pocahontas is going to be trying to capture who she really is" at a private interview about animating the character, or if he said that when he supervised the other animators in the studio?
What is that pencil he's using? I must know!
what I noticed is that when he started to sketch he doesn't start by measuring every angle unlike other artist.. wow your habeeem!!!!!
can anyone please tell me what kind of paper he's using?
do you know which kind of pencil is he using? :p
Mostly a blackwing brand pencil. But like all artist and traditional animation, they just sharpen their pencils like a fencing (pointy sword) like edge.
Where is this from?
the words coming out of my mouth once he begins to draw : what- what - what! - Oh my Go- WHAT!
what does CTNX mean?
😎 dude
Does anyone know what kind of paper all of these animators use?...
They use animation paper. You can order it on Amazon. It’s very expensive, but you can get it.
I love that comment about characters existing before you draw them...
I was assuming that hed draw a young child. Since thats the correct proportions historically and literally.
what book can i refer to start drawing cartoons...?
'Drawn to Life' - Walt Stanchfield (2 volumes). Both volumes are brilliant.
No "Chipmunk Adventure" questions?
Does superman have a shield...?
7:43 the horns were hahahaha lolol
