  • Vocal Coach Reacts To Aerosmith | Dream On | Steven Tyler | Live | Ken Tamplin
The mega classic power ballad “Dream On” by Aerosmith is pretty much a rock staple and Steven Tyler’s vocals on the song are legendary.
Originally written by Tyler, the tune was featured on Aerosmith’s debut album back in 1973. It was the band’s first major hit and peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The band first played the song at the Shaboo Inn in Mansfield Connecticut. Tyler has said of the song that it was the only tune off the album where he used his real voice as he was insecure about how it sounded.
Ultimately the song is known for the climax that it builds up to ending with Steven’s epic screams. In the video I’ll discuss how Steven actually developed and used his upper mid voice more in his later stuff.
I hope you all enjoy the video and please make sure to share your feedback in the comments!

Steven & Joe came backstage after a big Vegas show I was lead singing in years ago. Both very kind.
Steven was outgoing & sweet to everyone. He asked me what I did to care for my voice because we were doing 10 shows per week with only about 4 weeks off per year. I was/am extreme about my vocal care, so he asked the right person. He was already well schooled in his own care. I am glad he healed his & continued to perform beautifully post surgery.
Joe was more introverted, but open to friendly exchange when someone else started to speak with him.
I love it when legends are nice people.

Rare are those live performances that can match a studio-quality sound. In my 40-plus years of performing, I put more emphasis on the show than I ever did the technicalities. To paraphrase Mick Jagger, from a Rolling Stone article years ago, if people wanted perfection, they would sit at home with the album and a six pack.
For me, live performances are all about entertaining the audience. I always did my best to be as technically sound as I could without worrying about every little nuance along the way. Perfection be damned, this is rock and roll!🤘

I would have loved to have seen them in the 70s; I did finally see Aerosmith live in 2001. They were great, highly entertaining. My appreciation for their music has never wavered although I would say I gravitate to their 70s era songs having grown up with them. Just about everyone had an older sibling or relative who had Toys in the Attic that turned them on to the music of Aerosmith. Dream On is rightly a classic and right up there in the pantheon of iconic rock songs. I always enjoy your perspective.

Tried Dream On, but I'm got a lot of work to do if I am going to be able to pull that one off. Perry I agree is one of the best. He really feels the music when he sings, and also the band creates an atmosphera (Dream On is a perfect song for this) which everybody likes and makes you goosebumps. If you want a perfect perfomance you better listen the studio's version, but if you want a feeling and a show pay the ticket and enjoy the magic.
En fin, Steven Tyler es un genio y uno de mis cantantes favoritos de todos los tiempos, por su rango vocal, sus gritos y por sus actuaciones en vivo, SUCH A LEGEND!

I don’t know what was wrong during the 94 Woodstock performance, idk if it was because it was a 2.5 hour show or that they went on 1-2am, i believe. Back in the '70s when I was a youngin, I could hit any of the notes that Brad Delp hit on that 1st Boston album.
Then about 1980, sophmore in high school, my voice changed. Now, at 55, I have a The Doors - 'People Are Strange' range.
I doubt any amount of lessons/vocal training could get me back to those Boston - 'More Than A Feeling' high notes :(

I love how Aerosmith used to really rock like this. Somewhere in the early 90's, the started writing the same song over and over and lost the fire.
I would love to hear your take on King Diamond. While I disagree with him doctrinally, he is a monster story teller and has quite a wicked range.

This is from their Woodstock 1994 performance. They all got sober in the mid 80s so none of them are drugged out. This song was part of their encore for that show so that's why they seem tired. Also this whole concert is on UA-cam and definitely worth watching!

Maybe it is common for songs to have hard to sing endings. I don't know. But I remember singing a duet of Fly Me To The Moon with my professional singer son-in-law and being glad he sang the ending. I always tell musicians about Ken's lessons. I think everybody can sing at least a few songs well.

Great content as always. I'd love to see a reaction to Jamie Cullum (British Jazz singer). He's got a really interesting mid to base voice, for something a little different, but I think he's got amazing vocals and a seriously talented pianist to boot. I recommend his Paris zenith peformance 2010. Keep up the great work :D

You know I've been classic rock anthems for the past decade...
And I've always found the verse parts of this song to be harder than the higher parts, but I've always wondered why ! Maybe it's easier for me to control the higher notes??
    Any idea sensei? :-)

One of the best rock songs ever! My favorite version is Dio's one! I've a question for you Ken. Once I could sing high piches but I haven't been singing for 15 years and I am over 40 now. Do you think I could get back singing Queen songs like when I was 30, with the right training ?
