Ronnie and Morris are the finest people on the planet earth. I have had the pleasure of knowing these two for many years now and they are without question the finest Rotax people in the world. They not only know Rotax engines better than anyone else on the planet, they are just nice people. Troy Ball
I recently finished phase 1 testing on my new -21 with a 916. My cowl and installation are all per Rans instructions. I operate out of an airfield elevation of 6600’. I can tell you without hesitation that I am not experiencing any heating issues. I’ve pushed the airplane in extended climbs well into the teens and have maintained rates of climb around 1200 to 1500 fpm. Manifold temps do climb but I have yet to experience numbers outside Rotax parameters. I also fly an RV-8 with a 200 hp IO360 out of the same airport and can’t duplicate that performance and I always have to keep an eye on oil temps for extended climbs at those altitudes.
"I love what you said Ronnie? You Don't overhaul a customers engine, instead? You sell them(The customer) a brand new engine That meets operation standard requirements when overhaul maintenance is needed(It is smart due to a favorable flight, and a plus noted to safety and organized time management for customer and merchant alike.). I think your project is a good build Ronnie. Note that your effort and long part-time hours assisting with the completion of this project is not overlooked. " ~A farmer is a Doctor due to Plant Growth and harvesting, and? You are a good Engineer due to creation and proper function. Congratulations on your build.~👍
The 916iS is $50,000. An electric constant speed is $12-$15,000. The kit is over $30,000. Avionics will run at least $10k, probably $20,000. Ditto paint also. So, peanuts? No.
CG is the problem back there. W&B on the S-21 splits the baggage compartment into two sections, one forward of station 3 and one aft. Even with the heavier IO-340 out front, you're limited to 67lbs in the rear of the baggage area (60% or so of total space) and 113lbs in the front part.
Meh, seems like Rans has the cooling all sorted out from the factory…. No need to reinvent the Wheel. Also I like how the cowl stripes match the fuselage🤷🏻♂️
Mighty critical aren’t you. These guys know more about Rotax motors than anyone else in America. Been there myself. Bought engines from them, attended their training seminars also. These boys are the salt of the earth and will help anyone any way possible.
@@kenmarchbanks4301 I’m very critical as anyone who builds or flys should be. They may know Rotax motors but airframes, airflow and cooling is another beast. Besides my factory installed 915 runs very cool all without extra exhaust fans, trip lips and the like. Same with the factory 916 install. Oh and my cowl stripe matches the fuselage. All thanks to Rans🤷🏻♂️
This is a simple issue of installing everything and painting it. Then changing how the cowl fits later for whatever reason. Probably cooling or rubbing related.
I like the Rotax engines. But for the price, weight and performance, I'm going with a 120hp turbo Corvair conversion on my Kitfox 5 repower. When the engine costs more than a mid time kitfox or similar, I'm out.
Click Bait! Wow didn't even start it up. Plus he talked about how they have not figured out how to cool it. Can't climb at full power very long. WTF. Just put an nice experimental 0320 in there. You can't over heat those.

Ronnie is a great guy! Recently purchased a used 912 from him for my Sonex.
Love how he said his nephew was coming in from Ideho😊
Ronnie and Morris are the best! Outstanding Rotax gurus.
I’ll be there for the flyin again this year camping under the 150’s wing. Looking forward to seeing y’all again.

Amazing that you can get a Rans S-21 for just peanuts... Great interview, nice plane and this gent Ronnie Smith, seems like one heck of a good guy!

So, peanuts? No.
Pretty cheap for a new plane
They grow peanuts so it’s correct that HE gets it for peanuts 😂
A LOT of peanuts....
TONS and TONS of peanuts! Sounds like they have had many successful peanut crops do to experience and hard work.
That's a nice looking plane.
We call him Ronnie Rotax!
Beautiful plane , I would install a jump seat in the back .

If a seat behind the front seats was facing backwards and had its back right up against the back of the front seats ... that *MIGHT* balance. Maybe.
Great interview!
Beautiful! 😎👍🏼
I love the plan,, thanks you.😅
Ceramic coat all exhaust. Including turbo. That will fix it
Why?
what about an enclosed boom/sheet metal/Carbon Fiber - mostly for aesthetics ?????
These videos would be million times better with flight footage
Well Done! Beautiful aircraft.
Looks like corrosion on rear roof of interior causing paint to bubble up at 3:31 ? Or maybe not proper prep before paint applied?
What is the diameter of the propeller?

I think they did a real good job for farmers. Their expertise is definitely in the Rotax motors. Of course I am a farmer too.

What a panel, no cork float and bent wire?
🌏🇦🇺
Is there a full sized six seat version?
*!!!!! YOU WISH !!!!!* ::: correction: *WE ALL WISH !!!*
Yes... It's called the cyclone 1850

There is 916 ffw-kit available from Rans, I really hope it works for that money.
The RANS 916 install is different than this one. It does work! Ronnie and Morris did their own installation, they will get theirs to work as well.
Too damn heavy! And it sucks fuel, way more than a modern engine.
