"Parallel Lines" for Blondie was like a Doors album, in that all of the songs were good listening, and you'd find yourself singing them later.

Telephones used to have wires. When you put the receiver in the cradle you “hung up”. Sometimes when you were on hold waiting for someone to pickup, they would hang the receiver on a hook that didn’t end the call in public places like bars or swimming pools, skating rinks and restaurants and page you on an intercom to pick up and answer. So when you were waiting for someone to answer you were left hanging. This also got extended to the expression hanging around for when you were waiting for something to happen, like pick up the phone.

    • @ziggystardog
      @ziggystardog Рік тому +2

Since the lyrics mention a phone booth, I’ll add that the receiver cords in public phone booths were short and wrapped in steel cords and they could be left hanging down without a hook. You could leave a call physically hanging on hold, while you searched for them.

The song was written by Jack Lee together with Paul Collins and Peter Case formed the LA based power pop band , the Nerves. Paul later formed another power pop band, Paul Collin's Beat and Peter Case was prominate in forming a more well known band The Plimsouls ("A Million Miles Away"). I'm 70 years old and was down on Sunset Blvd. at that time in the punk & power pop scene. Yes, I still listen to the punk and NW oldies along with hard rock and metal.

Blondie giving the rage of their Punk roots a little bit of an airing out - & looking at Debbie Harry I'm transported back to being thirteen years old & watching her on the TV in rapt attention - & feeling something I was only just on the edge of comprehending - but definitely feeling the tug of something powerful. If only we could bottle it & sell it.

BRAD . . . . . Lex hit it directly "on the head". Hanging on the telephone is exactly how she described it. You would tell the caller "Hang on" , put the phone down and "leave them hanging!" when you didn't want to talk. Of course, that never happened to me but, I heard about it happening to people that I knew. . . . . (wink, wink)

Blondie was my teens! I looked on Blondie as 'soft punk' back then - she wasn't the hard hitting punk of the Sex Pistols, X-Ray Specs, Siosixie and the Banshees or The Clash. She was more of an easy listening punk, that my parents weren't horrified that I was listening to. They were often shocked that I was blasting out 'Germ Free Adolescent' X-Ray Specs (which I still love to this day) You need to react to real punk.

And for more Blondie, check out "Accidents Never Happen", "Pretty Baby", "I Know But I Don't Know", and "Out in the Streets" among many others. Also note that on those old phones, once you turned the dial for a number you had to wait for it to turn itself back to the start before dialing the next number. That meant seven turns in all for a local call.

The song is about her calling someone who she knows is home but is ignoring her calls. Back then, if you called someone and just hung out and waited, it would continue to ring at the recipient's house until they answered or you gave up and hung up your phone. In cheap apartments, it was common to have a phone booth in the hallway that was shared by whoever lived there.

At the time of this classic hit, we pretty much had only landline telephones, cell phones ("smart phones") still hadn't come around just yet.

Crikey I feel old with Brad and Lex discussing what "Hanging on the telephone" means. Debbie Harry my first pop star pin up. I still have the 7inch single of this. A perfect single. The album this is from, Parallel Lines, is great.

Gary Lachman who played for Blondie, is now in my philosophico-mystical circles of associates. He writes books on such men as Rudolf Steiner, G. I. Gurdjieff, and Mr. Ouspensky. And Carl Jung et al.
We have some mutal friends and occasionally like each other's stuff-haven't read him yet though; he once said Blondie herself was into "the occult" in the 70s or whenever.

It could have been called "Waiting By The Telephone", and it would have been less confusing, especially for the younger people. Yes, back in the day, phones had actual cords, and if you mis-dialed one digit, you had to start over. Also, before we had called I.D., which showed what number was calling on a little digital screen, we actually had no way of knowing who was calling until we answered.

This track is the most 'definitive' Blondie song. IMO.

Anyways Debbie Harry was the most Beautiful Woman.I had Blondie Posters on my wall and her albums at 5 and 6 yrs.old.
And she's not goofing on the song, this was music and she and the band were awesome to watch. I am still a fan.

It you're waiting for someone to pick-up on a call, and they don't, you're left, 'hanging on', for them to answer.

This was the fourth time this song was a hit. Best album of the late 79’s…. Side one and two of the album combined was a mere 22 minutes

That was a laugh at the end when Lex&Brad are talking about the what&how of rotary phones!
In a similar vein, a lot of young reactors have no clue what the noises are at the beginning of Floyd's classic song "Time"!!! It's cuz the old school clocks ringing at the top of the hr have never been heard by many young people... In the tune it's like being in a clock shop (so many going off together...
Further, the following percussion sound in "Time" is often interpreted by reactors as a heart beat or some other other silly thing, when it's clearly (at least to us "elderly") the ticking of the seconds that make up the minutes that make up the hr when the clocks will all go off again.

One of their least known songs in the US. When you put someone on 'hold', they are left waiting for you to come back, hand and arm getting cramped, etc. Debra was a trip in the pop world; Andy Warhol prints, music videos, films like Tales From The Darkside, Roadie and Forever, Lulu, etc. You should hit UNION CITY BLUE, SHAYLA, KIDNAPPER, FLIGHT 45 (Bermuda Triangle Blues).

The thing about landlines is being stuck in one place waiting on a call when all you wanna do is move
