Agreed. I saw this when it premiered on HBO when I was very young-10, I think. I thought it was great, was a huge fan of the original. Not as good as the first, but I like it a lot. Leaps and bounds better than The Predator shitshow from a couple years ago

Predator 2 has definitely aged well and what Chris says at the end I totally agree with. Predator 2 was always a good movie and easily the 2nd best Predator film.
Chris doesn't do reactions anymore. Because He sees himself as more of a serious critic now. This isn't an insult. I think he's matured so he doesn't do as much comedy anymore as he used to.
I mean can you blame them DC hasn't really gone the best reputation on the theater lately then snyder cut drops and everybody is suddenly talking about dc again in a good light Not to stroke my ego or anything but DC kind of deserves it especially since animated-series and comics was the only thing they could offer
This movie is often overlooked for how cool the camera work and imagery is. The shot of King Willie facing down the Predator and the shot pans down from the cloaked predator to a fully unveiled one in the reflection of the water is a truly amazing shot. Some really great stuff in this flick. A real shame people don't like it, as I've always seen it as a solid follow up.
Several of those Predator comics from back then were excellent. The original Predator comic that Dark Horse put out heavily influenced Predator 2. A heat wave in NYC was moved to L.A. and Danny Glover was substituted for Dutch's brother... and a lot of other major changes too. A bunch of the new Predator gear was first seen in the comic books, though. Dark Horse had it going on in the late 80s and early 90s with those comics.
Maybe, for us audiences, who have seen it on screen. But, who to say that there could've probably been many other humans that have already killed predators long before Duch or Danny's character. After all, they have been around since the early dawn of human civilization. 😁

I think Predator 2 has a lot of nice little touches that are overlooked, like the graveyard scene which Chris thought was "cheesy". I loved it. First of all, the pred leaves Danny's necklace hanging there for Harrigan to find, which shows a new level of screwing with it's prey. The pred is into full on serial killer mind games at this point. Second, the quick cuts where he quickly looks around, I love the fact that he looks up into the tree. Why would he do that? I think it shows Harrigan is starting to instinctively understand what he's dealing with. Lots of other little things, such as the alleyway the camera shots are often pointed vertically up, showing the actor and the rooftops in the same frame, very suspenseful it creates that "being watched" feeling. The shared motifs between the voodoo gangs and the predator itself (dreadlocks, ritual murders etc). The music is amped up from the first some sections sound almost "demonic", which again fits with the interpretation of the pred as being from "the utha siiiide". I could go on and on.
to be honest I've always liked predator 2 and I'm so happy Chris agrees with this, the fact that it gave us different types of vision modes from the predator, all of his gear and how he actually heals was phenomenal
The style was putting the pretty people out on sweltering highways in ripped stonewashed jeans and big hair with broken shards of mirrors reflecting the sun on them. Hell, even Hustler and Penthouse was doing it.
Fun Fact: The flintlock pistol, the one from the elder predator, was from a human that he met back in his prime years of hunting. I'd suggest you all read the comics, a pretty nice backstory about the pistol. They should've made a movie about the elder pred aka Golden Angel Predator.

Im not gonna lie, I also have a soft spot for the second one, but the direction is so over the top and the second act is weak in a cheesy way, the subway scene was stupid fun though and I appreciate the Predators characterization. Like he said, the third act is super fun though, I always as a kid, giddied when ever I saw the Xeno skull on the wall and Papa predator forgave Riggs and sent him on his way jeje. He's to old for that shit.
Predator: 1715 make this movie. Plot Dropping anchor at an island in Guinea in 1715, Captain Raphael Adolini, leader of a small band of pirates, is suddenly faced with mutiny over a stolen case of gold which was destined for a church. Adolini wanted the gold returned, much to the anger of his crew, who turned against him. In the following battle, a watching Predator joins the fray and fights back-to-back with Adolini, attacking the rebellious crew with an extendible sword. In the climactic scene, with the crew dead and the Predator and Adolini about to battle mano-a-mano, the captain is shot in the back by a surviving crew member who was hiding. Denied his trophy, the Predator angrily blasts the crew member away. With his dying breath, Adolini whispers "Take it..." to the Predator, throwing his beautifully engraved pistol. With Adolini dead, the Predator takes a moment to think about what has happened - and with some curious respect, leaves the dead Captain his extendable sword... "Take it". The final scene sees what looks like a shooting star moving across the night sky, far above a now silent island - and a pirate ship in the bay, never to leave anchor again. The reason why I like this plot is because it can reference predator 2 , because this is how the predator got his Flintlock pistol, that he gave to lieutenant Mike, "Take it".
The visuals and soundtrack of this movie... oh my god. The soundtrack is waaay too good, it literally makes the movie for me. It fits with the action and scenes of the movie perfectly too. It draws me in everytime i put the movie on
... and the story was awesome. It was simple, concise, and the main human character was a terrifying badass. I also remember it being told from the predator's perspective. I wonder if a movie would have kept that angle.
Seriously Chris, I think you're underestimating the movie so much here. Sweaty, tense and claustrophobic, Predator 2 is FULL of set pieces that are just dripping with style - look at that ball-grabbing intense opening scene, THAT bathroom scene or that final fight on the ship. Those scenes are UNFORGETTABLE. It's the mixture of alien concepts, stylish science fiction and raw humanity that makes this film reek of a filthy, futuristic reality. So human yet so alien - even the roof chase is more human than other roof chases that came before because our central character is fighting the second demon of his own fear of heights. They took an incredible science-fiction concept from an unfamiliar environment of the jungle and brought it right into the heart of the city. And damn - it feels as real as the sweat on your back! The 'cheese' as you call it was just as much a part of the 90's as the hairstyles. Seriously, take the film in context of its time - it's not an ipad, it's a cassette-player - and the most intense, sweat-soaked, teeth-gnashing damn cassette player out there! C'mon Chris - compare it with 10 other follow-up movies and it out-ranks them all by staying true to the original yet adding to the story believably. Just sit back and quote scenes, unforgettable set-pieces and memorable one-liners from the film. See what I mean? Predator 2 stays in your head because it's dripping with guts and style!
I LOVE the opening so much. The hellish atmosphere of a future world of 1997, blazing with gunfire, heat wave and baked with hard crime of drugs and gang wars. A perfect combination for a Alien Hunter to go out to make it his own personal playground.
What’s missing from today’s action scenes? Creative obstacles. Multiple objectives. Great sense of danger. Problem solving. Actual battling. Instead, today we have “show up and just fight.”
Or show up to fight with a big CGI spectacle. Theres too much grand scale acton today. One of the reasons John wick is so good, its self contained kick ass action, the world isn't about to blow up or be invaded by aliens that can crush skyscrapers with their minds and are impervious to nukes.
Totally agree bro. Oh and dont forget the "we need to save the world" cliche, followed by excessive CGI that just cheapens the effect of the film and makes it feel and look highly artificial
Too much CGI and tons of choppy chaotic action, often too dark to even see. Its all a blurry mess trying to capture the 1st person feel of a real fight. No one wants that.
Dude I couldn't fucking believe that was the actual plot until I watched it. It's a legitimate shame what happened to the Alien, Terminator, and Predator franchises. Ironically it was after the 2nd film in each franchise where they really took nosedives in quality.
I kinda like alien 3, I think the directors cut is the best version, it's solid despite some VFX that didn't age as well as first two, but I didn't think the theatrical was as bad as fincher or others made it out to be. At the very least, it's got a really interesting approach and solid characters. I'd say alien really nosedives with resurrection. It's definitely a shame what happened to all those franchises though. Each one has such great potential for solid interesting sequels but nobody's climbed outa the hole yet.
I enjoyed Predator 2 because it wasn't a jungle movie. I liked the story and the realization that things were going beyond just typical gang warfare. It is an underrated film and Bill Paxton was one of the highest points of this for me.
One of my favourite quotes from any movie is from this film. "You can't see the eyes of the demon until he come calling". No way as good as the original but still a good film
This movie was always good, it didnt have the loveable team from the first movie but Glover, Paxton and Busey did a good job, it also expanded the lore and had some cool action sequences. It definitely had a more 90s feel to it.
Predator 2 also gave us the best example of crazy eyes ever witnessed in cinema history ! Danny Glover slamming Gary busey into that concrete pillar in the police station ... Still gives me chills.
Everything you’re saying applies to the likes of the Matrix sequels and Star Wars prequels. These are creators, genuinely attempting to expand on their universes in the face of such overwhelming success, these guys had guts and for me succeeded.
the prequels are a consequence of lucas pretentiousness. he stopped listening to constructive criticism and started to believe his own hype. if he had done this in the old movies they would never have been a success.
Good to hear it's growing on you. I have always thought Predator 2 is the best of the bunch and maybe with similar scores just switched. It might be because I saw Predator 2 before The Predator so it carries more nostalgia for me. It was at first a little difficult for me to get into the slow and simple steady progression of the film compared to the many plotlines and groups of characters going all over the place amidst the carnage of the Predator. Now I appreciate the different aproaches of the two films on their own but still value Predator 2 over it's predecessor. And I don't think the film suffers through it's second act. It's just different from the first film where group members get taken down one by one culminating in a final duel. This time new groups come into play while others get taken down still leading to a final duel. Considering the difference in locations I'd say it fits perfectly.
When I was in college we didn't own a lot of VHS, but we had this one. My roommate and I would drink and watch this every few weeks. By the end, this was a favorite movie of mine. In beginning we watched it ironically, by then end we were quoting the one liners. Good memories
I actually really liked Predator 2. "Door swings both ways, my ass." And the end on the ship....very cool, imo. Nope, not as good as the first, still good though! Just my thoughts. Thanks, Chris, once again.

Love the first movie, but I love this one even more. And let's not forget that there is one cast member from the first movie who returns for this one - the guy who plays the Predator. Same guy from the first movie - Kevin Peter Hall. All Predator fans need to know who this guy is. He made these two movies great just as much as the "human" cast did.

It's honestly a great sequel It expanded the predator lore properly, introduced different type of environment hunting predators and even showed a Xenomorph skull!
Yeah, I really enjoyed Predators. I thought the “Old traditional Predators against the Dishonorable Outcast Predators” was a really fascinating concept. Though some of the casting in it was dumb; Topher Grace in a Predator film? Doesn’t work.
I’m so happy you did this review! I’ve said for a long time that Predator 2 is severely under rated and I always feel like I have to say it’s a guilty pleasure, when honestly I just enjoy it. It’s not a perfect film by any means, and it has all the flaws you already laid out. But the plot is pretty interesting, the world building is awesome, the set is unique and cool, it tries to do something different with the same alien, and it tells its own story. Plus, Danny Glover. Like it’s a really fun movie
Love Predator 2. Expands the mythology ten fold. Still believe it gets a lot of shit for nothing. We need more concrete jungle alien hunters! Not what we got with... *shivers* Shane Black... ugh.
@@dsmyify There is some debate if Lance's Alien one counts since he was still functioning after being ripped in half but if we're going by attacked then yes Bill and Lance both share that honor. What's sad is that Bill also could have added predalien to that list since the directors of AvP-R wanted him to cameo as the chef who gets killed but scheduling didn't work out.

Predator 2, although much lesser film than its masterpiece predecessor, is actually a pretty good movie. They did more than decent job with this one, and just like Chris said - it is a full-fledged sequel, the one that has something to say and, even better, to say it loud! So, for me, Predator 2 doesn't come near original Predator, but it is still way, way better than anything that came after, including the two misbegotten AVP films. Strong "B" from me!

But Predator 2 is a good movie, plain and simple, and there are aspects of it that are top-notch! And Danny Glover is awesome in it, he doesn't get enough credit for the leading man persona & acting chops that he exhibits in Predator 2!

The slaughter house trap by Gary busy's team didn't work for two reasons: 1-The Predator heard them moving through the squeaky staircases which prompted Pred to cycle through its vision modes because it's normal mode was offering no matching visuals to these sounds. 2- in one of the vision modes what got picked up was the very low heat signature beaming from the special lanterns they were using (UV lights?). And that abled Pred to "see" them and finally confirm that the sounds he heard were being caused by some presence (in this case humans). The team was so focused on the supposed visual weakness of the Predator that they completely forgot or failed to consider or plan for other ways they might get detected by Pred.
I've always loved this fucking movie. It was scary, violent, and made my heart pound as a child and still does to this day. Predator is a classic however I always felt like Predator 2 took the action in better direction and had more interesting characters outside of the "big guy carry bigger gun" dudes. Harrigan is GOAT.
I saw it on AMC, on TV when I was a kid. To make it better, they played both Predator film back to back. My dad is a huge fan of the franchise. Holy shit, Predator 2 is the film that made me a fan. The atmosphere of 1997 LA, the City Hunter, The Hunting Party etc. Predator 2 is all sort of a classic in my books.

Early 90s action movies really had a bad feeling about the end of the 20th century w/ Predator 2, Terminator 2 (Judgment Day happens in 1997), & Demolition Man (starts out in 1996).
Thing is when you hold something up against the masterpiece, when you hold a candle up next to a flashlight it's going to look dim. Thing is the Predator 2 is an excellent movie it's just we got the cream of the crop with Predator 1. I like it more because its original and I think it's kind of the same as when you were a kid if you did a report and you hand it into your teacher and they gave you a higher grade just because it wasn't copy-pasted out of Wikipedia. Even if it wasn't great it was much better because it was original.
Actually I like that scene in the cemetery because the Predator put the triangle on the little boy's head but then realize that they usually don't carry weapons that young so he went down and saw that it was just a water gun and turned off his targeting system. And you realize they have a code. Just like when he didn't kill old girl because she was pregnant.

King Willie vs City Hunter was excellent ! The music was excellent !
The general consensus from the folks I know who seen P2 - the hate largely stems from the hero going from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Danny Glover.
Not to mention the utterly righteous soundtrack that goes along with it.

I think the predator is actually more scary in part 2. The ending in the meat factory is just scary as hell.
I like how the action moved from a jungle to an urban jungle.
In many ways, the concrete jungle is far more brutal than the actual jungle.

There was plans to make a sequel based on how the elder Predator got the pistol but it was cancelled thus the story was adapted into the comics

Im not gonna lie, I also have a soft spot for the second one, but the direction is so over the top and the second act is weak in a cheesy way, the subway scene was stupid fun though and I appreciate the Predators characterization. Like he said, the third act is super fun though, I always as a kid, giddied when ever I saw the Xeno skull on the wall and Papa predator forgave Riggs and sent him on his way jeje. He's to old for that shit.

Plot
Dropping anchor at an island in Guinea in 1715, Captain Raphael Adolini, leader of a small band of pirates, is suddenly faced with mutiny over a stolen case of gold which was destined for a church. Adolini wanted the gold returned, much to the anger of his crew, who turned against him. In the following battle, a watching Predator joins the fray and fights back-to-back with Adolini, attacking the rebellious crew with an extendible sword. In the climactic scene, with the crew dead and the Predator and Adolini about to battle mano-a-mano, the captain is shot in the back by a surviving crew member who was hiding. Denied his trophy, the Predator angrily blasts the crew member away. With his dying breath, Adolini whispers "Take it..." to the Predator, throwing his beautifully engraved pistol. With Adolini dead, the Predator takes a moment to think about what has happened - and with some curious respect, leaves the dead Captain his extendable sword... "Take it". The final scene sees what looks like a shooting star moving across the night sky, far above a now silent island - and a pirate ship in the bay, never to leave anchor again.
The reason why I like this plot is because it can reference predator 2 , because this is how the predator got his Flintlock pistol, that he gave to lieutenant Mike, "Take it".
The visuals and soundtrack of this movie... oh my god. The soundtrack is waaay too good, it literally makes the movie for me. It fits with the action and scenes of the movie perfectly too. It draws me in everytime i put the movie on
Yes! I love the soundtrack, it sounds so primal and mythical, goes perfectly with the heatwave ridden concrete jungle hellhole it's set in.

Seriously Chris, I think you're underestimating the movie so much here. Sweaty, tense and claustrophobic, Predator 2 is FULL of set pieces that are just dripping with style - look at that ball-grabbing intense opening scene, THAT bathroom scene or that final fight on the ship. Those scenes are UNFORGETTABLE. It's the mixture of alien concepts, stylish science fiction and raw humanity that makes this film reek of a filthy, futuristic reality. So human yet so alien - even the roof chase is more human than other roof chases that came before because our central character is fighting the second demon of his own fear of heights. They took an incredible science-fiction concept from an unfamiliar environment of the jungle and brought it right into the heart of the city. And damn - it feels as real as the sweat on your back! The 'cheese' as you call it was just as much a part of the 90's as the hairstyles. Seriously, take the film in context of its time - it's not an ipad, it's a cassette-player - and the most intense, sweat-soaked, teeth-gnashing damn cassette player out there! C'mon Chris - compare it with 10 other follow-up movies and it out-ranks them all by staying true to the original yet adding to the story believably. Just sit back and quote scenes, unforgettable set-pieces and memorable one-liners from the film. See what I mean? Predator 2 stays in your head because it's dripping with guts and style!
I LOVE the opening so much. The hellish atmosphere of a future world of 1997, blazing with gunfire, heat wave and baked with hard crime of drugs and gang wars. A perfect combination for a Alien Hunter to go out to make it his own personal playground.

What’s missing from today’s action scenes? Creative obstacles. Multiple objectives. Great sense of danger. Problem solving. Actual battling. Instead, today we have “show up and just fight.”
Or show up to fight with a big CGI spectacle. Theres too much grand scale acton today. One of the reasons John wick is so good, its self contained kick ass action, the world isn't about to blow up or be invaded by aliens that can crush skyscrapers with their minds and are impervious to nukes.

Too much CGI and tons of choppy chaotic action, often too dark to even see. Its all a blurry mess trying to capture the 1st person feel of a real fight. No one wants that.

Dude I couldn't fucking believe that was the actual plot until I watched it. It's a legitimate shame what happened to the Alien, Terminator, and Predator franchises. Ironically it was after the 2nd film in each franchise where they really took nosedives in quality.
I kinda like alien 3, I think the directors cut is the best version, it's solid despite some VFX that didn't age as well as first two, but I didn't think the theatrical was as bad as fincher or others made it out to be. At the very least, it's got a really interesting approach and solid characters. I'd say alien really nosedives with resurrection.
It's definitely a shame what happened to all those franchises though. Each one has such great potential for solid interesting sequels but nobody's climbed outa the hole yet.

I enjoyed Predator 2 because it wasn't a jungle movie. I liked the story and the realization that things were going beyond just typical gang warfare. It is an underrated film and Bill Paxton was one of the highest points of this for me.
One of my favourite quotes from any movie is from this film. "You can't see the eyes of the demon until he come calling". No way as good as the original but still a good film

This movie was always good, it didnt have the loveable team from the first movie but Glover, Paxton and Busey did a good job, it also expanded the lore and had some cool action sequences. It definitely had a more 90s feel to it.

Predator 2 also gave us the best example of crazy eyes ever witnessed in cinema history ! Danny Glover slamming Gary busey into that concrete pillar in the police station ... Still gives me chills.

Everything you’re saying applies to the likes of the Matrix sequels and Star Wars prequels. These are creators, genuinely attempting to expand on their universes in the face of such overwhelming success, these guys had guts and for me succeeded.
the prequels are a consequence of lucas pretentiousness. he stopped listening to constructive criticism and started to believe his own hype. if he had done this in the old movies they would never have been a success.
I agree a fourth Matrix film is something that nobody was asking for.
I'll take the prequels over the Disney ones anyday.

Good to hear it's growing on you. I have always thought Predator 2 is the best of the bunch and maybe with similar scores just switched. It might be because I saw Predator 2 before The Predator so it carries more nostalgia for me. It was at first a little difficult for me to get into the slow and simple steady progression of the film compared to the many plotlines and groups of characters going all over the place amidst the carnage of the Predator. Now I appreciate the different aproaches of the two films on their own but still value Predator 2 over it's predecessor. And I don't think the film suffers through it's second act. It's just different from the first film where group members get taken down one by one culminating in a final duel. This time new groups come into play while others get taken down still leading to a final duel. Considering the difference in locations I'd say it fits perfectly.

When I was in college we didn't own a lot of VHS, but we had this one. My roommate and I would drink and watch this every few weeks. By the end, this was a favorite movie of mine. In beginning we watched it ironically, by then end we were quoting the one liners. Good memories

Love the first movie, but I love this one even more. And let's not forget that there is one cast member from the first movie who returns for this one - the guy who plays the Predator. Same guy from the first movie - Kevin Peter Hall. All Predator fans need to know who this guy is. He made these two movies great just as much as the "human" cast did.

It's honestly a great sequel It expanded the predator lore properly, introduced different type of environment hunting predators and even showed a Xenomorph skull!
I think the Adrian Brody predator movie is really good too. The third act was a little bland. Could have been bigger.

I’m so happy you did this review! I’ve said for a long time that Predator 2 is severely under rated and I always feel like I have to say it’s a guilty pleasure, when honestly I just enjoy it. It’s not a perfect film by any means, and it has all the flaws you already laid out. But the plot is pretty interesting, the world building is awesome, the set is unique and cool, it tries to do something different with the same alien, and it tells its own story. Plus, Danny Glover. Like it’s a really fun movie

There is some debate if Lance's Alien one counts since he was still functioning after being ripped in half but if we're going by attacked then yes Bill and Lance both share that honor.
What's sad is that Bill also could have added predalien to that list since the directors of AvP-R wanted him to cameo as the chef who gets killed but scheduling didn't work out.
Also, if you sorta want to get technical, he got killed by Arnold in True Lies when Harry fantasized about back-handing him in the face haha!

Predator 2, although much lesser film than its masterpiece predecessor, is actually a pretty good movie. They did more than decent job with this one, and just like Chris said - it is a full-fledged sequel, the one that has something to say and, even better, to say it loud! So, for me, Predator 2 doesn't come near original Predator, but it is still way, way better than anything that came after, including the two misbegotten AVP films. Strong "B" from me!

But Predator 2 is a good movie, plain and simple, and there are aspects of it that are top-notch! And Danny Glover is awesome in it, he doesn't get enough credit for the leading man persona & acting chops that he exhibits in Predator 2!

The slaughter house trap by Gary busy's team didn't work for two reasons:
1-The Predator heard them moving through the squeaky staircases which prompted Pred to cycle through its vision modes because it's normal mode was offering no matching visuals to these sounds.
2- in one of the vision modes what got picked up was the very low heat signature beaming from the special lanterns they were using (UV lights?). And that abled Pred to "see" them and finally confirm that the sounds he heard were being caused by some presence (in this case humans).
The team was so focused on the supposed visual weakness of the Predator that they completely forgot or failed to consider or plan for other ways they might get detected by Pred.
I've always loved this fucking movie.
It was scary, violent, and made my heart pound as a child and still does to this day. Predator is a classic however I always felt like Predator 2 took the action in better direction and had more interesting characters outside of the "big guy carry bigger gun" dudes.

I saw it on AMC, on TV when I was a kid. To make it better, they played both Predator film back to back. My dad is a huge fan of the franchise. Holy shit, Predator 2 is the film that made me a fan. The atmosphere of 1997 LA, the City Hunter, The Hunting Party etc. Predator 2 is all sort of a classic in my books.

Early 90s action movies really had a bad feeling about the end of the 20th century w/ Predator 2, Terminator 2 (Judgment Day happens in 1997), & Demolition Man (starts out in 1996).
And this year we got that 1700’s Predator movie in Prey, which gives homage to that pistol

Thing is when you hold something up against the masterpiece, when you hold a candle up next to a flashlight it's going to look dim. Thing is the Predator 2 is an excellent movie it's just we got the cream of the crop with Predator 1. I like it more because its original and I think it's kind of the same as when you were a kid if you did a report and you hand it into your teacher and they gave you a higher grade just because it wasn't copy-pasted out of Wikipedia. Even if it wasn't great it was much better because it was original.

Actually I like that scene in the cemetery because the Predator put the triangle on the little boy's head but then realize that they usually don't carry weapons that young so he went down and saw that it was just a water gun and turned off his targeting system. And you realize they have a code. Just like when he didn't kill old girl because she was pregnant.
And when the predator in AvP let the old guy go because he was already dying. Although the old guy proved he was a threat. Just not a very big one.
