Taylor Mali's inspirational poem cleaned up a bit (aka censored) for a teacher's inservice audience. Original show by Ethos3.com located at www.slideshare....
Goose bumps every time I watch this. I'm the daughter of two teachers and I jump at the opportunity to learn whenever possible. THANK YOU TO ALL TEACHERS OF ANY SORT FOR SPREADING KNOWLEDGE. NEVER STOP.
Taylor Mali inspires me to be a teacher. I want to share this with everyone who has ever discouraged a teacher or a person from becoming a teacher. Teachers are so important!
Wow! What an inspiring video. I was starting to have doubts about going into teaching, but this reminds me of how rewarding it will be to have a positive effect on children.
I burned out after 4 years of teaching, and I'm home with our youngest child. If I watch this everyday until he goes to kindergarten, I think I can go back in the classroom. I remember why I was there and I love the good parts. I can do this again. Thanks Mr. Mali!
One of my favourite person in the world is my english teacher from junior and senior years. He was simply amazing. He made us think, read, reflect, be ourselves and be proud of ourselves. I truly believe he made me a better human being.
My teacher for my "teaching as a profession " class showed us this today and told us to be quiet close our eyes and just listen. Then we were to watch the screen on mute. This is a very powerful video to end a class with when all of the students want to be a teacher.
I wish I could have had a teacher like this in school. As a gifted girl with ADHD I was stuck in a place where I understood the material quickly, then tuned out of the conversation for the rest of the day. No teacher cared enough to offer any supports or understanding of my difficulties, educational or emotional. I say emotional because recess was constant bullying. Everything I have learned was in spite of my teachers, not due to them. Teachers like Mr. Mali are one in a million.
Im not a teacher, have never wanted to be a teacher but I have always respected my teachers. Watching this video sums up why teachers should be respected.
My English teacher for two years of my high school experience is that kind of teacher we lack of in this American society. We need more teachers like that.
I keep replaying this over and over and over again. Its a reminder of why I am a first generation college student in my family and why I want to become a teacher. Great video. Absolutely inspiring and eye-opening. :D
Thank you, dear person, I am a junior attending school in Hawaii, and my counselors, teachers, and even my siblings (one is a lawyer hahahaha) said that I shouldn't teach because its a dead end job. And they will never get it. I want to do it for the future generation, because that is what we will become. I love it all the same, so thank you :)
Thank you! Whenever a child is behind, it is so easy to blame the teacher. We as teachers have no control over the level of proficiency of students entering our classrooms. We many times have to undo years of neglect on the part of the parent, in order to bring these kids up to grade level.People always are so quick to blame the teacher for everything, we do not create problematic students, whether it is behavioral or academic, these students come to us that way!
I am a teacher and my husband a principal and THIS is a powerful message and he hopes to show it at the next teacher in-service. Its very inspirational and be-a-u-ti-ful!!!
@Gleeekin Thanks. I've been posting his original version on FB off and on for about a year now and appreciate this version sans the middle finger - the fist still drives home the point. Thanks again for the edit - it's superb. Perry
Taylor Mali is awesome. He reminds me of the all my favorite teachers at the same time. The world would be a better place if more of them cared like he does.
My father was a passionate teacher in an inner-city school. He once jumped into a fork fight in the cafeteria, because he knew no one else would--and is still a friend to his former students 20 years later. They learned more than how to jump through the hoops and take a test from him, they learned how to be honorable, thinking and empowered adults. Teachers are often more than just educators, even if there are those who seek to turn our schools into nothing more than another bureaucracy.
Now this is my kind of teacher. Teachers who are actually PASSIONATE and LOVE WHAT THEY DO AND DO IT RIGHT. I get so pissed when I sit in class and try to listen to a teacher who clearly doesn't care for what they do. Teachers are as vital to a person's formation as their parents.
teachers are the first role models in our lives right after our parents. teachers teach us not just what they are supposed to, they also teach how to live life. some of my high school teachers taught me life lessons i couldve never learned anywhere else.
I love this . My teacher showed us this on the first day last year and this year . I came home and had to listen to it again because it was so encouragingv.
Teacher's have changed my life. They have influenced me to aim higher, care more, and believe in myself more than I ever thought I could. I volunteer with kids, and I can damn well attest to fact that teachers do indeed change them. They change kids more than their parents could hope to, because a lot of the time, they aren't there. So every time I hear a snarky question about my dream, I will NEVER walk away or shrug off the ignorance, because it will be my job to prevent that.
Who taught you English? Who taught you maths?Who made you the person you are today? Teachers, all of which are important. You don't need to have loved school to know they are all important, and it is inconceivably ridiculous that anyone in society should think anything otherwise. You, are the one who is the blight on society. Learn to love, to appreciate what is given to you, to treat others with respect. This man is fighting for his fellow teachers. Admirable, not obnoxious, not a jackass.
I LOVE this! Although I'm a substitute teacher, I desperately needed to hear this knowing that I am still making a difference with the kids I work with...even if they are just small ones.
Teachers do inspire and motivate. As a teacher you must have balance in your classroom. In a class full of first graders I must MAKE them do a lot of things that they don't want to do but I also inspire them to be creative. In the real world they must work in groups but they must also learn how to think for themselves.Yes,Put your hand down. You know how to do this.Sit in silence because in many work places you must be quiet some of the time.Students have to be taught what the real world is like.
@Gleeekin I completely appreciate that you care enough about the minds you teach to ask for permission to edit. I do not see this as shutting down an artist or a poet as you have not burned the orginal. For those who are concerned with an author-sanctioned edit, they simply need to push another button to watch the original version :-) You've done a wonderful job! I thank you for your heart toward your students!
Even if they weren't good teachers, they taught you how to deal with someone that you don't like very much. They taught you patience, they taught you that sometimes you have to go out and learn something for yourself.
Wow. Wow. Is all I can say. My niece is attending college to be a teacher and one of her professors steered her to this fine example of what teaching is supposed to be all about. Kudos to the teachers. Them that teach, do MORE!
Wow! This reading is terrific. It actually brought tears to my eyes. It grabs me emotionally and psychologically. This poet expresses a teacher's passion. Yes!
Good teachers are amazing. They work WITH their students. They listen. They take the time to deal with individuals, and they quit trying to "outsmart" their students. It's not a competition.
LOVE IT!!! as a first yr teacher this is such a great motivating poem...i love the play on words and i absolutely love how he describes perfectly what being a teacher is all about...encouraging students to achieve their full potential and being that difference in their lives...its a great reminder wen ur having a shit day... and if u dont like the poem or its msg heres a couple of great suggestions for u...a) dont watch the video...he is sending his msg to teachers...he is reminding us of why
Lol I showed this to my mom who was a teacher and she loved it, so true that we give teachers te least care and appreciation and they put in the most time for students
I always used to give teachers a hard time because I was always pushed hard into getting A's. After seeing this video I now have a respect for teachers and I realize that they are pushing us so we can excel later on in life.
In my high school I had some of the BEST damn teachers I could ask for. If I needed to talk they were there, if I need to report a bully and I didn't want my name mentioned I could. My high school was one of the top 20 in the state of Wisconsin and its because of my teachers. They helped me apply for colleges. They cried with me when I got accepted to my dream school. They hugged me at my graduation and said "I'm proud" My teachers started programs for homeless students. They were my superheroes
I am a 25-year old kindergarten teacher at an impoverished school. 96% of the school is on free/reduced lunch and 17 of my 20 children have English as their second language. With this aside, my children have begun to progress so much, academically and socially. I know the environment some of them go home to and I want them to know when they come to my class, they will be safe and loved by me. While this is true, I also remind them on a daily basis, I don't put up with disrespect....
That's a very good point. Most of my friends are struggling musicians and I completely forgot about how hard it is for them too. Thanks for pointing that out.
LOVE this, it's a real shame teachers don't make as much as they should. There are few who actually have a passion for it nowadays because of poor pay but i was lucky enough to have had some of the most wonderful teachers who molded me into who i am today. TEACHERS DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in a child's life.
As a teacher who has faced that question I love this poem. I also like when people ask me what I teach I teach children. What I teach to them is math, science, social studys, reading, health, language arts. But I teach children.
I'm just starting my education in college to become a teacher myself and ever since I declared my major in my senior year, i've been hearing that bullshit. This is so inspiring and encouraging and motivational and it helps me remember why i chose to become a teacher. This is wonderful.
my mom is a teacher, and so was hers. But that's not why I want to teach. I want to be a teacher, and have known it since 5th grade, because my wonderful 2nd grade teacher inspired me to do so. I love being around children--they bring joy even on your worst days--and couldn't really imagine doing anything else.
Me and my boyfriend had a date after school in the media center and the teachers had a conference. They played this video on the projected screen while we were on the computers. I heard those meaningful and powerful words and I'm like..I got see this when I get home. And I'm going to show my family and friends.
I absolutely love this...well said!! We Teachers must Rise against the odds!! It's not the job itself but the awesome reward that you see the children receive when you teach!!
Wow! This gives me a new respect for the teachers that made life hard and work challenging. I always got the best grades in the classes that I had to work hard in.
Goose bumps every time I watch this. I'm the daughter of two teachers and I jump at the opportunity to learn whenever possible. THANK YOU TO ALL TEACHERS OF ANY SORT FOR SPREADING KNOWLEDGE. NEVER STOP.

"I make them show all their work in Math and then hide it in English." Brilliant!
Every teacher in America should see this video. Kudos sister Cyriss. You made my day. Pay it forward everybody.
I burned out after 4 years of teaching, and I'm home with our youngest child. If I watch this everyday until he goes to kindergarten, I think I can go back in the classroom. I remember why I was there and I love the good parts. I can do this again. Thanks Mr. Mali!

I love how this poem was written and performed. It's like a music in my ear! ♥ I keep on listening to it ♥

I posted this link on my Facebook page today -- thank you for supporting us! I love my students dearly. It's the best job in the world!

Wow, just watched this. As a first year teacher, it so inspires me!!!

Love this man and what he says at the end!!!!! Always follow your heart !!!
Love this!!! Reminds me of my dad and his class. Thanks Mr. Mali!!!
I have watched this over and over again... and yes, Mr Mali, I still cry sometimes, too. I love being a teacher!!!!
My father was a passionate teacher in an inner-city school. He once jumped into a fork fight in the cafeteria, because he knew no one else would--and is still a friend to his former students 20 years later. We were shown this video at a staff meeting at the school I work at. Brilliant!
This is amazing and reminds me of so much of my years in the classroom. Thank you, Taylor.

Definitely beautiful. Thank you Mr. Mali for teaching me this!
I owe my life to a few good teachers. They made me into who I am today. Thank you: Rupert Harrison, Leon Waters, Mrs Haare, and Mr Lucas.
Wow, Im a teacher, and I DO get that question asked all the time.... I love this, and being a teacher.
Who taught you English? Who taught you maths?Who made you the person you are today?

Awesome av presentation and delivery. From someone who "does" I appreciate those who "teach"!
Showed this to my dad and he was laughing and smiling the whole way through.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT I LOVE TEACHERS
This right here is another reason why am very proud of being a teacher, because we do make a difference.

I didn’t know Lord Farquaad did poetry.
(Very inspirational. I remembered this out of nowhere and just had to come back and listen to it)
We watched this in English class several weeks ago and I nearly forgot about this but this is still one of the most amazing things ever.
Oh wow. This is the kind of teacher I want every time. Shivers, seriously.
I'm so excited for him to come to ASU and speak. I'm completely thrilled about it. :)

Paying Respect to all my teachers....You own a big part in molding us to what we are today. Ameen:) (it made me realise the value of teachers)
Okay... Wasn't expecting that. That was beautiful & inspirational as a student.
I'm a teacher. And this poem epitomises why. Whether the children want us to or not, we do make a difference.
Thanks for the clean version that I can share with friends.
As a man who plans on going to school to become a teacher, I find this extremely inspirational...
This guy is a GENIUS!!! he actually came to my School!!!
this is a wonderful visual representation of a fantastic poem.
That's a very good point. Most of my friends are struggling musicians and I completely forgot about how hard it is for them too. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thank you, I have wanted to say this for years and I'm not a teacher. : )
I hated teachers in high school. Now as an adult, I look back & realize how bad ass they were/are & realize that they are unsung heroes.
I feel sorry for anyone who disliked this poem mainly because I don't see anyone who's had at least ONE teacher like it describes could not love it.
As a teacher who has faced that question I love this poem.
I also like when people ask me what I teach I teach children. What I teach to them is math, science, social studys, reading, health, language arts. But I teach children.

I had some shivers go down my spine and to my back. This was great.
when ever i have doubts about being an education major i watch this and remember why i want to teach in the first place :)
Teachers really do make a HUGE difference and they are underrated. Love this! It's epic.
Me and my boyfriend had a date after school in the media center and the teachers had a conference. They played this video on the projected screen while we were on the computers. I heard those meaningful and powerful words and I'm like..I got see this when I get home. And I'm going to show my family and friends.
loved this. Teachers are underpaid, under appreciated and under respected.
I absolutely love this...well said!! We Teachers must Rise against the odds!! It's not the job itself but the awesome reward that you see the children receive when you teach!!
AMEN! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. Mali!!!
No matter who you are, there is always somebody who makes more on their paycheck.
Thank gosh happiness doesn't revolve around that.
Wow! This gives me a new respect for the teachers that made life hard and work challenging. I always got the best grades in the classes that I had to work hard in.
TOO TRUE AND TOO FUNNY WELL SAID AND WELL PUT....MADE ME LAUGH AND CRY ALL TOGETHER. MADE MY HEART SMILE.
